Selected AbstractsProducing Contradictory Masculine Subject Positions: Narratives of Threat, Homophobia and Bullying in 11,14 Year Old BoysJOURNAL OF SOCIAL ISSUES, Issue 1 2003Ann Phoenix This paper reports a qualitative analysis of data from a study of masculinity in 11,14 year old boys attending twelve London schools. Forty-five group discussions (N= 245) and two individual interviews (N= 78) were conducted. The findings indicate that boys' experiences of school led them to assume that interviews would expose them to ridicule and so threaten their masculinity. Boys were generally more serious and willing to reveal emotions in individual than in group interviews. A key theme in boys' accounts was the importance of being able to present themselves as properly masculine in order to avoid being bullied by other boys by being labeled "gay." The ways in which boys were racialized affected their experiences of school. [source] Acute suicidality after commencing atomoxetineJOURNAL OF PAEDIATRICS AND CHILD HEALTH, Issue 10 2008Georgia Armat Paxton Abstract: An 11 year old boy developed acute agitation and suicidal ideation after commencing atomoxetine shortly after it was approved for use in Australia. The clinical features were similar to reactions described in response to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The case highlights the importance of close monitoring when starting newly registered medications. An increased risk of suicidal thinking was subsequently identified for this drug leading to a Food and Drug Administration alert and a boxed warning in September 2005, however there are still no other published case reports of acute suicidality. On examination he was wasted and distressed. He had severe hypoalbuminaemia. Gastrointestinal imaging revealed a gastric bezoar. At operation a large phytobezoar extending into the jejunum was identified and removed. Postoperatively he required intensive nutritional resuscitation and support, including treatment of multiple micronutrient deficiencies. Malnutrition is common in children with developmental disabilities, with a number of possible contributing factors. Gastric bezoar is a rare cause, which should be considered in mobile children who may engage in pica. We present a 13 year old boy who was noted to have glycosuria on routine general practitioner (GP) urine testing. Clinical examination upon referral showed massive obesity, hypertension and prominent acanthosis nigricans, and investigations confirmed hyperinsulinaemia and hyperglycaemia. Metformin and a programme of weight reduction comprise the management of this young adolescent with type 2 diabetes. Such early diagnosis should permit the institution of appropriate management to avoid the early emergence of the complications of type 2 diabetes. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
