Selected AbstractsAgrarian Transformation and Rural Diversity in Globalizing East AsiaINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF JAPANESE SOCIOLOGY, Issue 1 2004Atsushi Kitahara Abstract:, In East Asia the rural society is not a society based upon agricultural industry anymore and the peasant society with its long history has been disappearing. The occupation and income sources of rural inhabitants have diversified and among them those who specialized in farming are the minority. There is a shortage of rural labor, which used to be abundant in the past, and presently it is not as easy to hire the farm workers. The reason for the diversification of the rural occupations is, to put it simply, because people cannot live merely on farm income. Indeed the farm operation costs have become more expensive due to labor saving techniques, but the livelihood costs have become more expensive due the new uniform lifestyle standards from globalization. Electric machines and education are the typical of these increased costs. The background of this rural change is industrialization and urbanization in the context of globalization and its strong impact is penetrating into the rural society through the regional urban center as the relay point of the global mechanism. This change is different based upon the location of each rural society. Generally, rural societies around a big urban center enjoy opportunities for the younger generation, but remote areas have serious problems with few employment opportunities and a smaller youth population. To reproduce and sustain the regional society as a whole, it is necessary to attract younger people and make them stay. We should plan to develop a variety of industries and the resultant diversified work opportunities in the broader region beyond the narrowly demarcated village and community. Subsistence and commercial agriculture might merely be a part of such diversity. [source] Gender at Work and at Home in Britain: Continuities and ChangesJOURNAL OF APPLIED SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 12 2000Gerda Siann This paper discusses the views that British men and women hold about gender roles. Drawing on a survey with over 4,000 university students and interviews with professional men and women, it is suggested that, while the majority of both genders are moving toward an egalitarian model of gender roles, men's views are more likely than women's to be constrained by an essentialist mode] of gender. The data presented indicate that men were more likely than were women to endorse traditional gender roles, to regard women as better equipped for child care than men, to believe that women's advances necessarily disadvantage men, and to believe that men's work opportunities have worsened in comparison to women's. Drawing on both the interviews and the survey, it is also argued that beliefs about gender roles tend to be mediated by individualist discourses, which exempt exceptional individuals from normative gender roles. [source] The impact of role discrepancy on nurses' intention to quit their jobsJOURNAL OF CLINICAL NURSING, Issue 9 2006BNurs, DipNurs, MNurs, Miyuki Takase RN Aims and objective., The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of role discrepancy on nurses' intention to quit their jobs. Background., Nurses experience role discrepancy, which refers to incompatibility between the roles nurses desire and expect to take, and the roles they actually engage in at work. However, there is a paucity of information as to how this role discrepancy affects nurses' intention to quit their jobs. Design., A correlational design was used to investigate the impact of role discrepancy on nurses' intention to quit their jobs. Methods., A total of 346 Australian nurses participated in this study by completing questionnaires. The results were analysed by t -test, polynomial regression and response surface analysis. Results., Nurses tended to experience role discrepancy, in particular, in decision making with hospital policies and provision of patient education. The overall results show that this role discrepancy contributes to nurses' intention to quit their jobs. Nurses' intention to quit their jobs also increased when they had a low desire to engage in nursing roles and when they only performed a few roles. When specific dimensions of nursing roles were examined, a role discrepancy in the use of nursing skills, such as participation in decision making and providing patient education and emotional support, had little impact on their turnover intention. On the contrary, a role discrepancy in task delegation practice showed a significant association with nurses' intention to leave their jobs. Conclusions., Role discrepancy has been experienced by many nurses, and this discrepancy partially contributes to nurses' intention to quit their jobs. Relevance to clinical practice., To reduce nursing turnover, it is important to create a work environment where nurses are inspired to engage in various nursing roles and their work desires are reinforced by existing work opportunities. [source] Adolescents' formal employment and school enrollment: Effects of state welfare policiesJOURNAL OF POLICY ANALYSIS AND MANAGEMENT, Issue 4 2004Lingxin Hao Variations in state welfare policies in the reform era may affect adolescents through two mechanisms: A competing labor market hypothesis posits that stringent state welfare policies may reduce adolescent employment; and a signaling hypothesis posits that stringent welfare policies may promote enrollment. To test these hypotheses, we use a dynamic joint model of adolescents' school enrollment and formal employment, separating state welfare policies from non-welfare state policies, state labor market conditions, and unobserved state characteristics. Longitudinal data from the NLSY97 on adolescents aged 14 to 18 and various state data sources over the period 1994,1999 support the competing labor market effect but not the signaling effect. In particular, lower-income dropouts suffer more severely from fewer labor market opportunities when state welfare policies are more stringent, which indicates that welfare reform may compromise work opportunities for lower-income dropouts. © 2004 by the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management. Yet in the UK only 15% of people with serious mental health problems are employed , despite an overwhelming consensus from surveys, case studies and personal accounts that users want to work. This paper aims to challenge common misconceptions surrounding employment, work and mental health problems. Drawing on a range of research evidence and legislative guidance it discusses significant barriers to work and proposes feasible solutions. The need for mental health staff and services to become involved in the provision of work opportunities is considered, as is the vital role they can play in changing communities. The potency of work as a vehicle for improving the social inclusion and community tenure of people with mental health problems is highlighted. Dunn Most people with serious mental illness (SMI) experience difficulty in fulfilling a vocational role, with many being unemployed or underemployed. Given the profound social and economic costs of this level of work impairment, researchers have investigated ways to enhance "vocational recovery," or the processes through which people with SMI regain their role as workers and reintegrate into the workforce. Using data collected from a larger qualitative study of 23 individuals who had progressed to an advanced stage of recovery from SMI, this study explored respondents' perspectives on employment and its relationship to their vocational recovery. Text passages describing employment were analyzed inductively by a diverse team of researchers. Seven themes were identified as being important in helping participants return to work or remain employed following the onset of a serious psychiatric disability: having the confidence to work, having the motivation to work, possessing work-related skills, assessing person,job fit, creating work opportunities, receiving social support, and having access to consumer-oriented programs and services. Implications of these findings on the development of interventions and policies to improve the vocational outcomes of people with SMI are discussed. Anthropological training and education must be based in sound ethnographic techniques, using contemporary tools, participatory methods, and interdisciplinary knowledge in order to accommodate faster-paced work environments and to disseminate their findings efficiently to a diverse audience while fulfilling the goal of empowering and enabling humans around the world to address social, economic, and health issues, along with other pressing concerns facing their communities. Skevington Abstract Are existing health-related quality of life (QoL) measures adequate for use in poverty? Focus groups of development researcher-practitioners were convened to discuss QoL in the low,middle-income countries of Ethiopia, Bangladesh, Peru and Thailand. Newly elicited themes were mapped onto the QoL concept consisting of 25 original facets from the WHOQOL-100, plus 24 additional facets derived from five subsequent WHOQOL modules (49 facets) organized in seven domains. Qualitative themes and importance ratings were used to identify seven novel themes that relate to poverty in these countries. Most are not included in QoL instruments: physical fitness & survival, social status, community relations, family life, work opportunity and environment, fairness and equality, and perception of political institutions. Community relations extended the social domain, and a political rights and freedoms domain was consolidated as a seventh domain.
