Women's Perspective on Men's Control and Aggression in Intimate Relationships

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ORTHOPSYCHIATRY, Issue 2 2009
Zeev Winstok PhD
The relationship of men's self-control capability; their need to control their wives; and their use of verbal aggression, threats, and physical forms of aggression against their partners, as reported by women, were examined. Data were obtained from a stratified probability sample of 2,544 women drawn from the general population in Israel. Initially, structural equation modeling analysis showed that (a) men's need to control their partners and their ability to control themselves were negatively related, and were 2 aspects of personal control; (b) men's verbal aggression, threats of physical aggression and actual physical aggression toward their partners were closely related, and were 3 aspects of aggressive behavior; (c) personal control and aggressive behavior were closely related. Next, a revised model that fitted the data better, demonstrated that verbal aggression was more closely related to personal control than to aggressive behavior. Finally, a model representing co-occurrence of control and violent expressions was tested. This model yielded the best fit to the data. We concluded that control and aggression are two conceptualizations of the same phenomenon, rather than 2 distinct, yet interrelated, concepts. [source]

Barriers to effective drug addiction treatment for women involved in street-level prostitution: a qualitative investigation

CRIMINAL BEHAVIOUR AND MENTAL HEALTH, Issue 3 2007
Frances M. Smith
Objectives,To examine barriers to effective drug addiction treatment for women involved in street-level prostitution. Methods,A qualitative approach was selected to enable a detailed exploration, in an informal and unthreatening manner, of the barriers to drug addiction treatment from the women's perspective. Nine in-depth interviews were conducted with women who were involved in street-level prostitution. Transcripts of one-to-one interviews were analysed for recurrent themes using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Results,Barriers to effective addiction treatment are present at psychological, interpersonal, and wider societal levels. Themes identified included: an impoverished sense of self-worth, a lack of trust and consistency in treatment, and the absence of a comprehensive treatment package. Conclusion,Current services could be improved by the provision of a structured treatment programme designed to target the specific physical and psychological requirements of this population. Also, efforts to correct the fictitious, negative portrayals of women involved in prostitution are required, if treatment efficacy is to be improved. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Pregnancy Intention from Men's Perspectives: Does Child Support Enforcement Matter?

PERSPECTIVES ON SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH, Issue 3 2005
Chien-Chung Huang
CONTEXT: Most research on pregnancy intention has focused on women's perspectives and characteristics. Because decisions about sexual activity and contraceptive use usually involve both men and women, it is important to understand factors associated with men's intentions, for example, child support enforcement,to maximize the potential for reducing unwanted pregnancies. METHODS: Data from the 1982,2002 waves of the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth were used in multinomial logit analyses to examine the determinants of pregnancy intention from men's perspectives. RESULTS: Forty-six percent of pregnancies reported by never-married men were unwanted, compared with 21% of those reported by married men. Stronger child support enforcement was marginally associated with men's decreased likelihood of being involved in an unwanted pregnancy compared with no pregnancy (coefficient, ,0.14) and of being involved in an unwanted pregnancy compared with a wanted pregnancy (,0.15). Without the improvement of child support enforcement over the survey period, the rate of unwanted pregnancies would have been an estimated 7% higher than the observed rate. CONCLUSIONS: Strengthening child support enforcement may have a positive impact on preventing unwanted pregnancies. Programs designed to reduce unwanted pregnancies and nonmarital births should include information on child support enforcement to increase their success. [source]

Discussing the menopause with women with learning disabilities

BRITISH JOURNAL OF LEARNING DISABILITIES, Issue 1 2003
Michelle McCarthy
Summary Traditionally, little attention has been paid to the menopause as it affects women with learning disabilities. Consequently, older women with learning disabilities have rarely been adequately prepared for, or supported through, what for most women is a significant ,change of life'. None of the existing literature focuses on the women's perspectives, but rather, looks at menopause from a medical angle, in particular focusing on the timing of onset. The research study described in the present paper is an attempt to gain some insights into the ways in which women with learning disabilities perceive the menopause. The main informants were women with learning disabilities themselves, but also general practitioners, staff in learning disability services and parents who still cared for their middle-aged daughters at home. The research project also involved the non-disabled researchers working alongside two groups of women with learning disabilities, who acted as advisors and consultants to the project, and who were paid for their time. Motherhood, Resistance and Attention Deficit Disorder: Strategies and Limits,

CANADIAN REVIEW OF SOCIOLOGY/REVUE CANADIENNE DE SOCIOLOGIE, Issue 2 2001
Claudia Malacrida
The psychiatric category Attention Deficit Disorder (Hyperactivity), because of its cultural and historical ambiguity, brings mothers into conflict with discourses of good motherhood, family normativity, professional knowledge and risk. Interviews with 34 women in Canada and England were conducted as a way to understand, from women's perspectives, the workings of knowledge and power encountered in dealing with medical, psychiatric and educational professionals. Mothers took up a wide range of discursive practices in attempts to position themselves and their families as worthy, deserving and knowledgeable. They also engaged in scrutiny of educational and psychiatric practice through volunteering, policy contributions, record keeping and using outside witnesses to shore up their legitimacy. As well, many engaged in knowledge/truth games, confrontation and, ultimately, refusal. However, because vulnerable children are at stake, mothers' ability to truly resist remains limited. [source]
