    Application of ground-penetrating radar to determine the thickness of Pleistocene periglacial slope deposits

    Abstract Wide areas of the mountainous regions of Germany have rock covered by Pleistocene periglacial slope deposits (PPSD), formed by gelifluction during the cold periods of the ice ages in non-glaciated areas. The PPSD provide the parent material for soil development, and their physical characteristics affect several stabile soil properties. Because the PPSD play a significant ecological role, we studied the spatial distribution and properties of the PPSD in order to assess the distribution of the stabile soil properties. The high stone content of the PPSD greatly hinders augering and digging. Hence, we tested the use of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) as a potentially time-saving, non-destructive method to determine the thickness of the PPSD. In several study areas of the Rhenish Massif, GPR investigations of single soil profiles and soil transects along an exposed gas-pipeline ditch were carried out. The GPR images were compared to the actual thickness of the layers of the PPSD exposed in the profiles and the ditch. In the GPR images usually at least one distinct boundary could be identified, which occurs at the transition between the loose material and the hard rock, mostly ranging between 50 and 150,cm depth. In some cases, in which stone content changed abruptly between different layers of the PPSD, also the boundaries between these layers could be identified in the GPR image. On the other hand, in areas where remnants of the Mesozoic-Tertiary weathering mantle are preserved, the boundary between the saprolite and the overlying basal layer of the PPSD is ambiguous or not at all visible. Einsatz von Georadar zur Bestimmung der Mächtigkeit periglaziärer Lagen In den deutschen Mittelgebirgen sind die Gesteine weitflächig von periglaziären Lagen überzogen. Diese entstanden durch Gelifluktion während der Kaltzeiten in den unvergletscherten Bereichen. Sie stellen das Ausgangssubstrat der Bodenbildung dar und bestimmen eine Reihe stabiler Bodeneigenschaften. Die ökologische Bedeutung der periglaziären Lagen gab den Anlass, ihre Verbreitung und Eigenschaften zu erfassen, um daraus flächenhafte Aussagen über diese Eigenschaften abzuleiten. Da Bohrungen und Grabungen in den periglaziären Lagen häufig durch hohe Skelettgehalte erschwert werden, wurde untersucht, ob Georadar zur zeitsparenden, zerstörungsfreien Erfassung der Lagenmächtigkeiten eingesetzt werden kann. In verschiedenen Teilen des Rheinischen Schiefergebirges wurden Georadar-Messungen an Bodenprofilen sowie an Transekten entlang eines Gasleitungsgrabens durchgeführt, die jeweils mit den Mächtigkeiten der periglaziären Lagen verglichen wurden, die an der Graben- bzw. Profilwand aufgeschlossen waren. In den Radargrammen ist in der Regel mindestens eine deutliche Grenze zu erkennen. Diese tritt am Übergang vom Lockermaterial zum Festgestein auf, der in der Regel zwischen 50 und 150,cm Tiefe liegt. In einigen Fällen, in denen sich der Skelettgehalt an den Lagengrenzen abrupt stark verändert, sind auch Grenzen zwischen verschiedenen Lagen im Radargramm zu erkennen. Dagegen ist in Gebieten, in denen Reste der mesozoisch-tertiären Verwitterungsdecke im Untergrund anstehen, die Grenze zwischen der Basislage und dem Gestein im Radargramm nur diffus oder nicht ausgeprägt.     Elementary Many-Particle Processes in Plasma Microfields

    Abstract The effect of electric and magnetic plasma microfields on elementary many-body processes in plasmas is considered. As detected first by Inglis and Teller in 1939, the electric microfield controls several elementary processes in plasmas as transitions, line shifts and line broadening. We concentrate here on the many-particle processes ionization, recombination, and fusion and study a wide area of plasma parameters. In the first part the state of art of investigations on microfield distributions is reviewed in brief. In the second part, various types of ionization processes are discussed with respect to the influence of electric microfields. It is demonstrated that the processes of tunnel and rescattering ionization by laser fields as well as the process of electron collisional ionization may be strongly influenced by the electric microfields in the plasma. The third part is devoted to processes of microfield action on fusion processes and the effects on three-body recombination are investigated. It is shown that there are regions of plasma densities and temperatures, where the rate of nuclear fusion is accelerated by the electric microfields. This effect may be relevant for nuclear processes in stars. Further, fusion processes in ion clusters are studied. Finally we study in this section three-body recombination effects and show that an electric microfield influences the three-body electron-ion recombination via the highly excited states. In the fourth part, the distribution of the magnetic microfield is investigated for equilibrium, nonequilibrium, and non-uniform magnetized plasmas. We show that the field distribution in a neutral point of a non-relativistic ideal equilibrium plasma is similar to the Holtsmark distribution for the electrical microfield. Relaxation processes in nonequilibrium plasmas may lead to additional microfields. We show that in turbulent plasmas the broadening of radiative electron transitions in atoms and ions, without change of the principle quantum number, may be due to the Zeeman effect and may exceed Doppler and Stark broadening as well. Further it is shown that for optical radiation the effect of depolarization of a linearly polarized laser beams propagating through a magnetized plasma may be rather strong.     Soil erosion assessment using geomorphological remote sensing techniques: an example from southern Italy

    Abstract The aim of this study is to assess of the distribution and map the geomorphological effects of soil erosion at the basin scale identifying newly-formed erosional landsurfaces (NeFELs), by means of an integration of Landsat ETM 7+ remotely sensed data and field-surveyed geomorphological data. The study was performed on a 228·6,km2 -wide area, located in southern Italy. The study area was first characterized from a lithological, pedological, land-use and morpho-topographic point of view and thematic maps were created. Then, the georeferenced Landsat ETM 7+ satellite imagery was processed using the RSI ENVI 4.0 software. The processing consisted of contrast stretching, principal component analysis (PCA), decorrelation stretching and RGB false colour compositing. A field survey was conducted to characterize the features detected on the imagery. Particular attention was given to the NeFELs, which were located using a global positioning system (GPS). We then delimited the Regions of Interest (ROI) on the Landsat ETM 7+ imagery, i.e. polygons representing the ,ground-truth', discriminating the NeFELs from the other features occurring in the imagery. A simple statistical analysis was conducted on the digital number (DN) values of the pixels enclosed in the ROI of the NeFELs, with the aim to determine the spectral response pattern of such landsurfaces. The NeFELs were then classified in the entire image using a maximum likelihood classification algorithm. The results of the classification process were checked in the field. Finally, a spatial analysis was performed by converting the detected landsurfaces into vectorial format and importing them into the ESRI ArcViewGIS 9.0 software. Application of these procedures, together with the results of the field survey, highlighted that some ,objects' in the classified imagery, even if displaying the same spectral response of NeFELs, were not landsurfaces subject to intense soil erosion, thus confirming the strategic importance of the field-checking for the automatically produced data. During the production of the map of the NeFELs, which is the final result of the study, these ,objects' were eliminated by means of simple, geomorphologically-coherent intersection procedures in a geographic information system (GIS) environment. The overall surface of the NeFELs had an area of 22·9,km2, which was 10% of the total. The spatial analysis showed that the highest frequency of the NeFELs occurred on both south-facing and southwest-facing slopes, cut on clayey-marly deposits, on which fine-textured and carbonate-rich Inceptisols were present and displaying slope angle values ranging from 12° to 20°. The comparison of two satellite imageries of different periods highlighted that the NeFELs were most clearly evident immediately after summer tillage operations and not so evident before them, suggesting that these practices could have played an important role in inducing the erosional processes.     Effect of test frequency on fatigue strength of low carbon steel

    ABSTRACT Ultrasonic fatigue tests (test frequency: 20 kHz) and conventional tension,compression fatigue tests (10 Hz) have been conducted on annealed and 10% pre-strained specimens of 0.13% carbon steel. Small holes were introduced on the specimen surface to investigate the effect of test frequency on small crack growth. The dynamic stress concentration factor and the stress intensity factor under ultrasonic fatigue tests were checked to be almost the same as those of conventional tension,compression fatigue tests. However, the fatigue properties were dependent on the test frequency. Ultrasonic fatigue tests showed longer fatigue life and lower fatigue crack growth rate for the annealed and 10% pre-strained specimens. Slip bands were scarce in the neighbourhood of cracks under ultrasonic fatigue tests, while many slip bands were observed in a wide area around the crack under conventional fatigue tests. In order to explain the effect of test frequency on fatigue strength, dynamic compression tests with Split Hopkinson bars were carried out. The stress level increases substantially with the strain rate. Thus, the increase in fatigue strength might be, to a large extent, due to a reduction in crack tip cyclic plasticity during ultrasonic fatigue tests. [source]


    Quantitative and qualitative evaluation of neuromotor behaviour in children with a specific speech and language disorder

    Abstract Several studies have described problems in a wide area of motor functions in language impaired children. The purpose of this study was to identify the nature of the motor deficits in two subgroups of language impaired children. A standard neurological examination was performed on 18 children with an expressive language disorder and 21 children with a receptive language disorder. The motor performance of the language disordered children was compared with the motor performance of 23 normal children. The standard neurological examination allowed for a qualitative and quantitative assessment of five specific neurological subsystems. Handedness was determined for all children. The language impaired children had more motor problems than the control children on most neurological subsystems. There were few statistically significant differences between the two groups of language impaired children. An excess in left-handedness was established in the group of children with a receptive language disorder. There was a co-occurrence of verbal and non-verbal deficits in language impaired children. As these motor problems put an additional burden on the development of language impaired children, they should be diagnosed as early as possible. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]


    Long-term changes in the abundance of flying insects

    Abstract., 1.,For the first time, long-term changes in total aerial insect biomass have been estimated for a wide area of Southern Britain. 2.,Various indices of biomass were created for standardised samples from four of the Rothamsted Insect Survey 12.2 m tall suction traps for the 30 years from 1973 to 2002. 3.,There was a significant decline in total biomass at Hereford but not at three other sites: Rothamsted, Starcross and Wye. 4.,For the Hereford samples, many insects were identified at least to order level, some to family or species level. These samples were then used to investigate the taxa involved in the decline in biomass at Hereford. 5.,The Hereford samples were dominated by large Diptera, particularly Dilophus febrilis, which showed a significant decline in abundance. 6.,Changes in agricultural practice that could have contributed to the observed declines are discussed, as are potential implications for farmland birds, with suggestions for further work to investigate both cause and effect.     Vision system for on-line characterization of paper slurry ,

    This paper presents a detailed description of a vision system that detects and localizes the nonuniformities that appear on the paper slurry (wood fiber and water mixture) at the wet end of a paper machine. Specifically, the system monitors the paper slurry as it exits the headbox and alerts the operators of any event (e.g., streaks) that disrupts the otherwise homogeneous background. These events affect crucial product properties such as formation. A poor formation results in thick and thin spots on the sheet and impacts its strength and printability. This paper describes the vision system in terms of its hardware modules, as well as the image processing algorithms that it utilizes to perform its function. The system acquires intensity and topographic information from the scene. It uses texture-based features for the detection and facet-based descriptors for the localization of the nonuniformities. In addition to being tested in a laboratory environment, a prototype of this system was constructed and deployed to a paper mill, where its performance was evaluated under realistic conditions. Installed on a fourdrinier paper machine, running at 480 m/min and producing linerboard material, the vision system monitored about a 1 m wide area and successfully detected and localized slurry streaks.     Effects of secondary tuber harvest on populations of devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) in the Kalahari savannas of South Africa

    Abstract Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) is an internationally traded species that is harvested for its secondary tubers. Root extracts are used to treat arthritis and other inflammatory diseases. This study examined population structure, density, growth, mortality, and seed and fruit production in harvested and unharvested populations in the Kalahari savannas of South Africa over 4 years. Plant density and population structure differed significantly between overgrazed and grass-dominated areas, suggesting that the differences may be due to competition for water and nutrients. Experimental removal of secondary tubers (harvest) was not a significant factor for mortality in any of the harvested size classes. Harvest also did not affect growth, although plants in the 3,4 cm size class grew more in both the harvested and unharvested populations. Fruit production was variable; fruits matured only after sufficient rains. Under the conditions of this study, the species appears to be resilient to harvest, with both harvested and unharvested plants surviving. After harvest, both groups recovered and grew (on average) at the same rate. Because of the spatially variable habitat and the plasticity of the plants themselves, a large number of plants over a wide area are required to better understand the species' life history. Résumé La griffe du diable Harpagophytum procumbens est une espèce qui est commercialisée à l'échelle internationale; on en récolte les tubercules poussant sur les racines secondaires. Les extraits de racines sont utilisés pour traiter l'arthrite et d'autres maladies inflammatoires. Cette étude examine la structure de sa population, sa densité, sa croissance, sa mortalité et sa production de semences et de fruits chez les populations récoltées ou non des savanes du Kalahari en Afrique du Sud, pendant quatre ans. La densité des plantes et la structure des populations différaient significativement entre les zones surpâturées et celles où les herbes dominaient, ce qui suggère que les différences pourraient être dues à la compétition pour l'eau et les nutriments. Le prélèvement expérimental des tubercules secondaires (récolte) n'était un facteur significatif de mortalité dans aucune des classes de taille récoltées. La récolte n'affectait pas non plus la croissance, même si les plants de la classe de taille des 3,4 cm croissaient plus chez les populations aussi bien récoltées que non récoltées. La production de fruits était variable; les fruits n'arrivaient à maturité qu'après des pluies suffisantes. Dans les conditions où fut réalisée cette étude, les espèces ont semblé résilientes à la récolte, les plants récoltés survivant aussi bien que ceux qui ne l'avaient pas été. Après la récolte, les deux groupes se rétablissaient et croissaient (en moyenne) au même rythme. Étant donné que l'habitat est très variable selon les endroits et vu la plasticité des plantes elles-mêmes, il faut étudier un grand nombre de plantes sur une grande superficie pour mieux comprendre l'histoire complète de cette espèce.     Ultrastructural study of skin and eye of UV-B irradiated ayu Plecoglossus altivelis

    A scanning electron microscopic study of the skin and eye of UV-B radiated ayu Plecoglossus altivelis(age 30 days, mean ± s.e. total length: 16·25 ± 0·11 mm) under laboratory condition showed marked changes when compared with the control fish without UV-B radiation. The exposure of the fish to the radiation resulted in the destruction of microridges in the epidermis and exposed neuromast cells of the skin. Domed protrusions were also more common in the skin of UV-B radiated fish than in the control fish. The appearance of mucus in both groups was different. In the control skin the mucus was spread over a wide area whereas in the treated fish the mucus was concentrated in a small area. The anastomozing structures of the microridges of the eyes were lost in UV-B radiated fish and the microridges themselves were fewer in number, fragmented, and aggregated. Mucus cells, prominently visible in the control fish, were distorted in the treated fish. Cell contours were irregular in UV-B radiated fish and cell to cell contacts had been lost in this group.     Evaluation of fluorescent probe surface intensities as an indicator of transdermal permeant distributions using wide-area two-photon fluorescence microscopy

    Abstract The application of high-speed two-photon fluorescence microscopy (HTPM) to examine transdermal transport processes has enabled the noninvasive visualization of permeant spatial distributions over a larger, more clinically relevant wide area of the skin. Earlier studies demonstrated that the transdermal fluorescent probe distribution over a 2,×,2 mm skin area was well represented by a significantly reduced sampling of the 400 microscale skin sites (100,×,100 ,m) constituting the wide area. In the present study, the 400 microscale skin sites are considered individually, and the site-to-site variability in permeant distributions is used as a model to reflect the range in experimentally measured skin permeabilities resulting from the inherent stratum corneum structural heterogeneity. The correlation established between the permeant surface intensity and the corresponding permeant intensity gradient at each skin site provides an indication of the potential for screening transdermal permeant distributions solely based on the evaluation of microscale permeant surface intensities. The strong linear correlation between the intensity gradient and the surface intensity for the hydrophilic model permeant, sulforhodamine B, demonstrated that surface intensities provide a robust indicator of the corresponding transdermal probe distributions at the microscale. For the hydrophobic model permeant, rhodamine B hexyl ester, however, weak correlations were observed between these two parameters. This result suggests that the stratum corneum microscale surface intensity does not validly capture the corresponding intensity gradients for the entire range of skin permeabilities typically encountered as a result of the inherent stratum corneum heterogeneity. © 2003 Wiley-Liss, Inc. and the American Pharmacists Association J Pharm Sci 92:2354,2365, 2003 [source]


    Indirect facilitation and competition in tree species colonization of sub-Mediterranean grasslands

    Abstract: Questions: In the absence of herbivores, what is the importance of shrub facilitation for the colonization of grasslands by Fagus sylvatica and Quercus pubescens? Is there an indirect facilitative effect of shrubs on tree seedlings by limiting herb competition? Location: Causse du Larzac, southern Massif Central, France. Methods: We conducted field experiments on the facilitative role of shrubs in seedling emergence and survival, in relation to potential negative effects of shading and the presence of herbs. The effects of shade and herbs on allocation and root morphology were analysed in a pot experiment. Results: According to these experiments, the establishment of both tree species was facilitated by shrubs, but the two species differed in the processes underlying this facilitation. Shade directly facilitates the emergence rate of both species. Shade also indirectly facilitates Fagus survival by limiting herb competition. No indirect facilitation of Quercus survival was detected. These differences reflect variation in the tolerance of herb competition by seedlings of the two species. The tolerance of herb competition by Quercus seedlings allows regeneration over a wide area under each shrub and some regeneration events in grasslands at low grazing intensity. In contrast, for Fagus, only a narrow area under each shrub is suitable; regeneration is zero in grassland. The high tolerance of herb competition by Quercus seedlings may result from the avoidance of root competition. Conclusions In grasslands with severe drought stress, and almost obligatory shrub facilitation for tree seedling regeneration, the tolerance of herb competition may alter the precise role of facilitation in the colonization process.     The potential of X-ray cluster surveys to constrain primordial non-Gaussianity

    ABSTRACT We present forecasts for constraints on deviations from Gaussian distribution of primordial density perturbations from future high-sensitivity X-ray surveys of galaxy clusters. Our analysis is based on computing the Fisher matrix for number counts and large-scale power spectrum of clusters. The surveys that we consider have high sensitivity and wide area to detect about 2.5 × 105 extended sources, and to provide reliable measurements of robust mass proxies for about 2 × 104 clusters. Based on the so-called self-calibration approach, and including Planck priors in our analysis, we constrain at once nine cosmological parameters and four nuisance parameters, which define the relation between cluster mass and X-ray flux. Because of the scale dependence of large-scale bias induced by local-shape non-Gaussianity, we find that the power spectrum provides strong constraints on the non-Gaussianity fNL parameter, which complement the stringent constraints on the power spectrum normalization, ,8, from the number counts. To quantify the joint constraints on the two parameters, ,8 and fNL, that specify the timing of structure formation for a fixed background expansion, we define the figure of merit . We find that our surveys constrain deviations from Gaussianity with a precision of ,fNL, 10 at 1, confidence level, with FoMSFT, 39. We point out that constraints on fNL are weakly sensitive to the uncertainties in the knowledge of the nuisance parameters. As an application of non-Gaussian constraints from available data, we analyse the impact of positive skewness on the occurrence of XMMU-J2235, a massive distant cluster recently discovered at z, 1.4. We confirm that in a WMAP -7 Gaussian ,CDM cosmology, within the survey volume, , 5 × 10,3 objects like this are expected to be found. To increase the probability of finding such a cluster by a factor of at least 10, one needs to evade either the available constraints on fNL or on the power-spectrum normalization ,8. [source]

    ABSTRACT By means of deep FORS1/VLT and ACS/Hubble Space Telescope observations of a wide area in the stellar system , Cen we measured the luminosity function of main-sequence stars down to R= 22.6 and IF814W= 24.5. The luminosity functions obtained have been converted into mass functions and compared with analytical initial mass functions (IMFs) available in the literature. The mass function obtained, reaching M, 0.15 M,, can be well reproduced by a broken power law with indices ,=,2.3 for M > 0.5 M, and ,=,0.8 for M < 0.5 M,. Since the stellar populations of , Cen have been proved to be actually unaffected by dynamical evolution processes, the mass function measured in this stellar system should represent the best approximation of the IMF of a star cluster. The comparison with the MF measured in other Galactic globular clusters suggests that possible primordial differences in the slope of the low-mass end of their MF could exist. [source]


    Apical vulnerability to dendritic retraction in prefrontal neurones of ageing SAMP10 mouse: a model of cerebral degeneration

    The SAMP10 mouse is a model of accelerated ageing in which senescence is characterized by age-related atrophy of the cerebral cortex and limbic structures, poor learning and memory task performance with depressive behaviour and cholinergic and dopaminergic alterations. Here we studied age-related changes in the dendritic arbors and spine density of pyramidal cells in the medial prefrontal cortex of SAMP10 mice using a quantitative Golgi method. Dendrites of prefrontal neurones gradually retracted with ageing towards the soma with the relative preservation of overall complexity. Apical dendrites were much more severely affected than basal dendrites. The combined length of the apical dendrites and spine density were decreased by 45% and 55%, respectively, in mice at 12 months, compared with mice at 3 months of age. Immunohistochemical and immunoblot analyses indicated that expression of microtubule-associated protein (MAP) 2, a marker of dendrites, decreased in an age-related manner not only in the anterior cortex but also in the posterior cortex and olfactory structures in SAMP10 mice. Decreased expression of MAP2 mRNA caused the decrease in MAP2 protein expression. These results suggest that retraction of apical, but not of basal dendrites, with a loss of spines in prefrontal neurones, appears to be responsible for poor learning and memory performance in aged SAMP10 mice. It is also suggested that age-related dendritic retraction occurs in a wide area including the entire cerebral cortex and olfactory structures. [source]


    Do mountain hare populations cycle?

    We investigated the occurrence and distribution of multi-annual cycles in abundance of mountain hare populations across a wide area of their range in northern Europe. We analysed 125 time-series of mountain hare abundance indexed from hunting bag records and questionnaire responses from Scotland, Sweden, Finland and Switzerland. We also reanalysed 17 previously published time-series based on hunting bag records and snow track indices from mountain hare populations in Scotland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Russia and Italy. Autocorrelation analysis showed that 45% of mountain hare populations showed evidence of cycles, characterised by significant negative autocorrelations at half or the whole cycle period. The amplitude and periodicity of cycles varied between and within countries. Time-series in Scotland were characterised by high-amplitude weak cycles with a mean periodicity of nine years but with a range of 4,15 years. Norwegian and Swedish time-series revealed low amplitude weak cycles with a 3,7 year period. Finnish time-series showed low amplitude cycles with a 4,11 year period. Alpine time-series were predominantly non-cyclic, while the limited number of series from Russia showed high amplitude weak cycles with an 8,11 year period. The results reveal that mountain hare populations show a wide range of population dynamics with distinct regional differences in periodicity, amplitude and density dependent structure of cycles. These findings suggest that different factors may limit or regulate mountain hare populations in different regions of Europe thus supporting the results of recent field studies. [source]


    Phylogeny and phylogeography of squirrel monkeys (genus Saimiri) based on cytochrome b genetic analysis

    Abstract Squirrel monkeys (genus Saimiri) are distributed over a wide area encompassing the Amazon Basin: French Guiana, Suriname, and Guyana, together with Western Panama and Western Costa Rica. The genus Saimiri includes a complex of species and subspecies displaying considerable morphological variation. Taxonomic and systematic studies have identified, in this genus, one to seven species comprising up to 16 subspecies. The phylogenetic relationships between these taxa are poorly understood. Molecular markers have yielded a consistent framework for the systematics of Central and South American Saimiri, identifying four distinct clades: S. oerstedii, S. sciureus, S. boliviensis, and S. ustus. Here, we reconsider the phylogenetic and biogeographic history of Saimiri on the basis of mitochondrial (mtDNA) sequence data, focusing mostly on individuals originating from the Amazon Basin. We studied 32 monkeys with well-defined geographic origins and inferred the phylogenetic relationships between them on the basis of full-length cytochrome b gene nucleotide sequences. The high level of gene diversity observed (0.966) is consistent with the high level of behavioral and morphological variation observed across the geographic range of the genus: 20 mtDNA haplotypes were identified with a maximum divergence of 4.81% between S. b. boliviensis and S. ustus. In addition to confirming the existence of the four clades previously identified on the basis of molecular characters, we suggest several new lineages, including S. s. macrodon, S. s. albigena, S. s. cassiquiarensis, and S. s. collinsi. We also propose new patterns of dispersion and diversification for the genus Saimiri, and discuss the contribution of certain rivers and forest refuges to its structuring. Am. J.     On the accuracy of retrieved wind information from Doppler lidar observations

    Abstract A single pulsed Doppler lidar was successfully deployed to measure air flow and turbulence over the Malvern hills, Worcester, UK. The DERA Malvern lidar used was a pulsed Doppler lidar. The lidar pulse repetition rate was 120 Hz and had a pulse duration of . The system was set up to have 41 range gates with range resolution of 112 m. This gave a theoretical maximum range of approximately 4.6 km. The lidar site was 2 km east of the Malvern hill ridge which runs in a north,south direction and is approximately 6 km long. The maximum height of the ridge is 430 m. Two elevation scans (Range,Height Indicators) were carried out parallel and perpendicular to the mean surface flow. Since the surface wind was primarily westerly the scans were carried out perpendicular and parallel to the ridge of the Malvern hills. The data were analysed and horizontal winds, vertical winds and turbulent fluxes were calculated for profiles throughout the boundary layer. As an aid to evaluating the errors associated with the derivation of velocity and turbulence profiles, data from a simple idealized profile was also analysed using the same method. The error analysis shows that wind velocity profiles can be derived to an accuracy of 0.24 m s,1 in the horizontal and 0.3 m s,1 in the vertical up to a height of 2500 m. The potential for lidars to make turbulence measurements, over a wide area, through the whole depth of the planetary boundary layer and over durations from seconds to hours is discussed.     A multistep process for the dispersal of a Y chromosomal lineage in the Mediterranean area

    In this work we focus on a microsatellite-defined Y-chromosomal lineage (network 1.2) identified by us and reported in previous studies, whose geographic distribution and antiquity appear to be compatible with the Neolithic spread of farmers. Here, we set network 1.2 in the Y-chromosomal phylogenetic tree, date it with respect to other lineages associated with the same movements by other authors, examine its diversity by means of tri- and tetranucleotide loci and discuss the implications in reconstructing the spread of this group of chromosomes in the Mediterranean area. Our results define a tripartite phylogeny within HG 9 (Rosser et al. 2000), with the deepest branching defined by alleles T (Haplogroup Eu10) or G (Haplogroup Eu9) at M172 (Semino et al. 2000), and a subsequent branching within Eu9 defined by network 1.2. Population distributions of HG 9 and network 1.2 show that their occurrence in the surveyed area is not due to the spread of people from a single parental population but, rather, to a process punctuated by at least two phases. Our data identify the wide area of the Balkans, Aegean and Anatolia as the possible homeland harbouring the largest variation within network 1.2. The use of recently proposed tests based on the stepwise mutation model suggests that its spread was associated to a population expansion, with a high rate of male gene flow in the Turkish,Greek area.     Liposome-Encapsulated Hemoglobin Alleviates Brain Edema After Permanent Occlusion of the Middle Cerebral Artery in Rats

    Abstract Liposome-encapsulated hemoglobin (LEH) was proven to be protective in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury. The present study evaluated LEH in a rat model of permanent middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion to clarify its effect during ischemia and reperfusion. Five minutes after thread occlusion of the MCA, rats were infused with 10 mL/kg of LEH (LEH, n = 13), and compared with normal controls (n = 11). Additional animals received the same MCA occlusion with no treatment (CT, n = 11), saline (saline, n = 10), empty liposome solution (EL, n = 13), or washed red blood cells (RBC, n = 7). Severity of brain edema was determined 24 h later by signal strength in T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of the cortex, striatum, hippocampus, and pyriform lobe. The results showed that brain edema/infarction observed in any vehicle-infused control was significantly more severe than in LEH-treated rats. There was a tendency toward aggravated edema in rats receiving ELs. LEH infusion at a dose of 10 mL/kg significantly reduced edema formation as compared to other treatments in a wide area of the brain 24 h after permanent occlusion of the MCA. Low oncotic pressure of EL and LEH solution (vehicle solution) appeared to cause nonsignificant aggravation of edema and reduced protective effects of LEH. [source]


    Factors affecting pollination ecology of Quercus anemophilous species in north-west Spain

    Pollination ecology of Quercus is influenced by meteorological, biotic and genetic factors. This study was undertaken to ascertain the effect induced by these factors on pollen production, release and dispersion. Aerobiological data have been used in recent years as phenological information, because the presence of pollen in the air is the result of flowering across a wide area. The onset of the Quercus pollen season and the atmospheric pollen concentrations during the pollination period in two localities of north-west Spain (Ourense and Santiago) were determined from 1993 to 2001. There were important variations in total annual pollen as a result of meteorological conditions, lenticular galls produced by Neuropterus on catkins and biennial genetic rhythms of pollen production. In order to determine the beginning of flowering, a thermal time model has been used. Chill requirements were around 800 chilling hours (CH) and heat requirements were 953 growth degree days (GDD in °C) in Santiago and 586 GDD in Ourense. Pollen in the air show positive correlation (99% significance) with daily thermal oscillation, maximum and minimum temperatures, and hours of sunshine.     Vertical Social Differentiation in Athens: Alternative or Complement to Community Segregation?

    Vertical social differentiation is presented in the recent literature as an important element of reduced segregation in South European cities, and the supporting evidence originates mainly from Athens. The authors of this article question the claim about the common form and function of vertical social differentiation across South Europe, as well as its opposition to community segregation, and try to reveal the specificity of the processes leading to its formation in Athens. Since the mid-1970s, the dominant process of urban growth in Athens has been middle-class suburbanization. This process has reinforced community segregation and, at the same time, has triggered a filtering-down process in wide areas around the CBD, formerly occupied by upper and mainly intermediate professional categories. Interclass vertical segregation has subsequently appeared in these areas, where intermediate professional categories and lower middle-class households are now predominant. The fact that these areas do not represent a real choice for any of their resident groups shows that this vertical cohabitation has been the unintended consequence of changing segregation patterns, and hardly the outcome or the corollary of a growing process of sociospatial homogenization. Cet article conteste l'idée que la différenciation sociale verticale ait une forme ou une fonction commune en Europe méridionale, et qu'elle entrave la ségrégation horizontale; de plus, il tente d'exposer la spécificité des processus qui conduisent à sa formation à Athènes. Depuis le milieu des années 1970, l'expansion urbaine de la capitale grecque se caractérise par l'implantation en banlieue des classes supérieurs et moyennes. Ce processus a renforcé la ségrégation dans les quartiers et, parallèlement, a déclenché un processus de filtrage vers le bas dans de vastes zones entourant l'hypercentre, précédemment occupées par des catégories de professionnels libéraux supérieures et surtout moyennes. Une ségrégation verticale interclasse est ensuite apparue dans ces quartiers, des catégories de libéraux moyennes et des ménages de la petite bourgeoisie y prédominant désormais. Or, quel que soit le groupe de résidents, ces zones ne représentent pas un choix réel; cette cohabitation verticale est donc bien la conséquence imprévue de la modification des schémas de ségrégation, plutôt que le résultat ou le corollaire d'une homogénéisation socio-spatiale accentuée.     Effects of culling on spatial associations of Mycobacterium bovis infections in badgers and cattle

    Summary 1Bovine tuberculosis (TB), caused by Mycobacterium bovis, has serious consequences for Britain's cattle industry. European badgers (Meles meles) can transmit infection to cattle, and for many years the British government culled badgers in a series of attempts to reduce cattle infections. 2We investigated the impact of badger culling on the spatial distribution of M. bovis infection in badger and cattle populations in replicated areas in England. 3M. bovis infection was significantly clustered within badger populations, but clustering was reduced when culls were repeated across wide areas. A significant spatial association between M. bovis infections in badgers and cattle herds likewise declined across successive culls. These patterns are consistent with evidence that badgers are less territorial and range more widely in culled areas, allowing transmission to occur over greater distances. 4Prior to culling, M. bovis infections were clustered within cattle populations. Where badger culling was localised, and in unculled areas just outside widespread culling areas, cattle infections became less spatially clustered as badger culling was repeated. This is consistent with expanded badger ranging observed in these areas. 5In contrast, clustering of infection in cattle persisted over time on lands where badgers were repeatedly culled over wide areas. While this lack of a temporal trend must be interpreted with caution, it might reflect persistent infection within, and continued transmission between, cattle herds in areas where transmission from badgers to cattle had been reduced by badger culling. Continued spatial association of infections in cattle and badgers in such areas might partly reflect transmission from cattle. 6Synthesis and applications: Our findings confirm that badger culling can prompt spatial spread of M. bovis infection, a phenomenon likely to undermine the utility of this approach as a disease control measure. Possible evidence of transmission from cattle, both to other cattle and to badgers, suggests that improved cattle controls might yield multiple benefits for TB management. [source]


    Spatial and temporal variability in seed dynamics of machair sand dune plant communities, the Outer Hebrides, Scotland

    Aim The subjects of seed banks and seed rain represent comparatively neglected areas of biogeography, yet at the community scale, exhibit interesting patterns in both space and time. This paper describes the seed bank and seed rain characteristics of the machair sand dune communities of the Outer Hebrides. As well as looking at individual species distributions and variability, the seed banks and seed rain are examined in terms of their detailed subcommunity composition and its local spatial and temporal variation. The machair plant (sub)communities show extensive degrees of anthropogenic modification because of past and present agricultural management, including cultivation for cereals over wide areas and for potatoes in large numbers of ,lazy beds' or small patches. Thus over the historical period, large areas of machair have undergone regular ploughing and cultivation, which have provided the opportunity for a patchwork of secondary succession to occur. This pattern continues to the present day. Furthermore, most other non-cultivated plant (sub)communities are intensively grazed, primarily by cattle and also by sheep and rabbits. Location South Uist, the Outer Hebrides, north-west Scotland. Methods At two carefully selected locations, a range of these various successional subcommunities have been sampled for their seed banks, by taking cores and for their seed rain, by using specially designed traps located where each seed bank sample was removed. This paired sampling strategy allowed direct comparison of the seed bank and the seed rain. Both individual species distributions and the community assemblages of seed bank/seed rain species are examined in space and time using techniques of numerical classification [two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN)] and ordination [detrended correspondence analysis (DCA)]. Results and conclusions There is considerable heterogeneity within and between machair subcommunities in terms of seed bank and seed rain characteristics. The soil seed banks and seed rain of the agriculturally disturbed machair subcommunities are consistently more dense and more species rich than non-cultivated areas of the machair. Overall, machair seed banks are small and stable with no discernible seasonal trends in either size or species composition. In contrast, seed rain on the machair is characterized by a distinct temporal trend. Both seed banks and seed rain are potentially very poor sources of propagules for recolonization following disturbance, indicating that the majority of revegetation following anthropogenic and/or environmental interference is through vegetative reproduction.     Regulation of relaxin 3 gene expression via cAMP-PKA in a neuroblastoma cell line

    Abstract Relaxin 3 is expressed in neurons of the brain stem that inneravate wide areas of the forebrain. Relaxin 3 mRNA levels in these neurons are increased in response to restraint stress, and by central administration of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF). In the present study, we observed that relaxin 3 was expressed in a mouse neuroblastoma cell line, Neuro2a, and investigated the intracellular signaling that activated relaxin 3 gene transcription in vitro. By means of a clone stably transfected with a relaxin 3 promoter-EGFP gene, we observed that dibutyryl cyclic AMP and forskolin increased the relaxin 3 promoter activity. These increases were inhibited by pretreatment with PKA inhibitors, H89 and KT5720. Moreover, the promoter activity was enhanced by CRF treatment after expression of CRF-R1 receptor on the cells. Taken together, these results indicate that relaxin 3 transcription is activated via the cAMP-PKA pathway in the downstream of CRF-R1. © 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc. [source]


    Were last glacial climate events simultaneous between Greenland and France?

    A quantitative comparison using non-tuned chronologies
    Several large abrupt climate fluctuations during the last glacial have been recorded in Greenland ice cores and archives from other regions. Often these Dansgaard,Oeschger events are assumed to have been synchronous over wide areas, and then used as tie-points to link chronologies between the proxy archives. However, it has not yet been tested independently whether or not these events were indeed synchronous over large areas. Here, we compare Dansgaard,Oeschger-type events in a well-dated record from southeastern France with those in Greenland ice cores. Instead of assuming simultaneous climate events between both archives, we keep their age models independent. Even these well-dated archives possess large chronological uncertainties that prevent us from inferring synchronous climate events at decadal to multi-centennial time scales.     Ecology and conservation of common bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus in the Mediterranean Sea

    ABSTRACT 1Bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus are amongst the best-known cetaceans. In the Mediterranean Sea, however, modern field studies of cetaceans did not start until the late 1980s. Bottlenose dolphins have been studied only in relatively small portions of the basin, and wide areas remain largely unexplored. 2This paper reviews the ecology, behaviour, interactions with fisheries and conservation status of Mediterranean bottlenose dolphins, and identifies threats likely to have affected them in historical and recent times. 3Whilst intentional killing was probably the most important cause of mortality until the 1960s, important ongoing threats include incidental mortality in fishing gear and the reduced availability of key prey caused by overfishing and environmental degradation throughout the region. Additional potential or likely threats include the toxic effects of xenobiotic chemicals, epizootic outbreaks, direct disturbance from boating and shipping, noise, and the consequences of climate change. 4The flexible social organization and opportunistic diet and behaviour of bottlenose dolphins may allow them to withstand at least some of the effects of overfishing and habitat degradation. However, dolphin abundance is thought to have declined considerably in the region and management measures are needed to prevent further decline. 5Management strategies that could benefit bottlenose dolphins, such as sustainable fishing, curbing marine pollution and protecting biodiversity, are already embedded in legislation and treaties. Compliance with those existing commitments and obligations should be given high priority. [source]


    Ficus racemosa is pollinated by a single population of a single agaonid wasp species in continental South-East Asia

    Abstract High specificity in the Ficus -agaonid wasp mutualism has lead to the assumption of a mostly ,one-to-one' relationship, albeit with some exceptions. This view has been challenged by new molecular data in recent years, but surprisingly little is known about local and spatial genetic structuring of agaonid wasp populations. Using microsatellite markers, we analysed genetic structuring of Ceratosolen fusciceps, the fig wasp pollinating Ficus racemosa, a fig tree species widely distributed from India to Australia. In sampling stretching from the south of China to the south of Thailand we found evidence for only a single pollinating wasp species in continental South-East Asian mainland. We found no evidence for the co-occurrence of cryptic species within our subcontinent sampling zone. We observed no spatial genetic structure within sites and only limited structuring over the whole sampling zone, suggesting that F. racemosa is pollinated by a single population of a single agaonid wasp species all over continental South-East Asia. An additional sample of wasps collected on F. racemosa in Australia showed clear-cut genetic differentiation from the Asian continent, suggesting allopatric divergence into subspecies or species. We propose that the frequent local co-occurrence of sister species found in the literature mainly stems from contact zones between biogeographic regions, and that a single pollinator species over wide areas might be the more common situation everywhere else.     New implementation of a SNOM suitable to study topographical features over wide areas

    Abstract A new implementation of a SNOM is described, aiming at the topographical study of large areas and exploiting the advantages of the shear-force detection system. This technique finds very interesting application in the study of archeological or artistic samples, where it often occurs that an area to be examined at high resolution (optically, topographically or chemically) is enclosed in a wider one. The implemented system allows to obtain scans of wide areas by using dc-motors to move the sample under the probe tip, and thus it can face rough samples with height differences of several tens of micrometers. It allows the user to choose whether to use the SNOM to study the optical and topographical properties of a small part of the sample (up to tens of square micrometers), or to use the motor-driven scan technique, to study the topographical characteristic of a large area of the sample (up to some square millimeters) and even over rough surfaces.     Khoratpithecus piriyai, a Late Miocene hominoid of Thailand

    Abstract A Khoratpithecus piriyai lower jaw corresponds to a well-preserved Late Miocene hominoid fossil from northeastern Thailand. Its morphology and internal structure, using a microcomputed tomography scan, are described and compared to those of other known Miocene hominoids. It originated from fluviatile sand and gravel deposits of a large river, and was associated with many fossil tree trunks, wood fragments, and large vertebrate remains. A biochronological analysis by using associated mammal fauna gives an estimated geological age between 9,6 Ma. The flora indicates the occurrence of a riverine tropical forest and wide areas of grassland. K. piriyai displays many original characters, such as the great breadth of its anterior dentition, suggesting large incisors, large lower M3, a canine with a flat lingual wall, and symphysis structure. Several of its morphological derived characters are shared with the orangutan, indicating sister-group relationship with that extant ape. This relationship is additionally strongly supported by the absence of anterior digastric muscle scars. These shared derived characters are not present in Sivapithecus, Ankarapithecus, and Lufengpithecus, which are therefore considered more distant relatives to the orangutan than Khoratpithecus. The Middle Miocene K. chiangmuanensis is older, displays more primitive dental characters, and shares several dental characters with the Late Miocene form. It is therefore interpreted as its probable ancestor. But its less enlarged M3 and more wrinkled enamel may suggest an even closer phylogenetic position to orangutan ancestors, which cannot yet be supported because of the incomplete fossil record.     Impact study of the 2003 North Atlantic THORPEX Regional Campaign

    Abstract An experiment took place during autumn 2003 with the aim of testing the feasibility of an operational targeting of observations over the North Atlantic Ocean in the context of the international programme THORPEX. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the impact of these additional observations in the French operational model ARPEGE during the last three weeks of the campaign. Results are shown for large regions over and around the North Atlantic Ocean and for specific verification areas. Over Europe, the addition of observations is slightly beneficial for the forecast, mostly in the low troposphere over wide areas and above 100 hPa. However, the impact of extra data is more significant but also more mixed for the dedicated verification areas: they are case, forecast-range and level dependent. In addition, the information content is studied with the Degrees of Freedom for Signal (DFS) for the evaluation of the observation impact on the analysis of one case of December 2003. Firstly, the variations of the DFS have been illustrated in a simplified data assimilation system. It has been found for that case that satellite data have the most important global contribution to the overall analysis, especially the humidity sensitive infrared radiances. For the conventional data, the wind measurements of the aircraft and from the geostationary satellites are the most informative. For the targeted area, the data from aircraft and the dropsondes have the largest DFS. It has been noted that the DFS of the dropsondes located in the sensitivity maximum is larger than the other one even if there is no link between the DFS and the forecast. However, the impact of the dropsondes grows with respect to the forecast range and leads to an improvement of the forecast for this case. Copyright © 2006 Royal Meteorological Society [source]
