THE PHANTASM OF AESTHETIC AUTONOMY IN WHISTLER'S WORK: TITLING THE WHITE GIRL

ART HISTORY, Issue 3 2006
AILEEN TSUI
This essay explores how James McNeill Whistler's design and titling of his painting The White Girl (1862) responded to the contradictions between his ideal of aesthetic autonomy and his concern to situate his work in the art markets of London and Paris. Attention to Whistler's ironic deployment of suggestive visual imagery and of titles associated with popular narratives leads to a re-evaluation of how the painting might have signified for viewers in 1862,3. The essay argues that Whistler negotiated conflicts between aesthetic purity and commercial concerns by designing and titling this canvas to function in different ways for what he posited as distinct audiences: an aesthetically sensitive elite and the general publics in London and Paris. The investigation of Whistler's titling tactics and their implications for his art's position within modernism is extended through analysis of new evidence found in previously unnoticed titular inscriptions on wood engravings after his designs. Racial differences in the associations of neighborhood disadvantage, exposure to violence, and criminal recidivism among female juvenile offenders,

BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES & THE LAW, Issue 4 2009
Preeti Chauhan M.A.
The current study examined the impact of exposure to violence and neighborhood disadvantage on criminal recidivism among Black (n,=,69) and White (n,=,53) female juvenile offenders. Participants were girls between the ages of 13 and 19 (M,=,16.8; SD,=,1.2) who were sentenced to secure custody. Using a multi-method research design, the study assessed neighborhood disadvantage through census level data, exposure to violence through self-report, and criminal recidivism through official records. Results indicated that Black girls were significantly more likely than White girls to live in disadvantaged neighborhoods, but both reported similar levels of parental physical abuse and witnessing neighborhood violence. In structural equation models, neighborhood disadvantage and witnessing neighborhood violence were indicative of future recidivism for the group as a whole. However, multiple group analyses indicated the existence of race specific pathways to recidivism. Witnessing neighborhood violence was associated with recidivism for Black girls while parental physical abuse was associated with recidivism for White girls. Results suggest that characteristics within the neighborhood play a considerable role in recidivism among female juvenile offenders generally and Black female juvenile offenders, specifically. Race specific risk models warrant further investigation, and may help lawmakers and clinicians in addressing racial disparities in the justice system. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) serology for predicting distant metastases in a white juvenile patient with nasopharyngeal carcinoma and no clinical response to EBV lytic induction therapy

HEAD & NECK: JOURNAL FOR THE SCIENCES & SPECIALTIES OF THE HEAD AND NECK, Issue 11 2006
Servi J. C. Stevens PhD
Abstract Background. We describe a case of a 16-year-old white girl with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Methods. At diagnosis, the patient had characteristic immunoglobulin (Ig)A and IgG responses to EBNA1, viral capsid antigen (VCA)-p18, and early antigens (EAs), with no detectable EBV DNA in her blood. Combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy resulted in complete remission. Eighteen months later, the patient's IgA responses to EBNA1 and p18 and both IgA and IgG anti-EA increased, without apparent recurrence. Five months later, lung metastases were found. She underwent surgical removal of the lung metastases and conventional chemotherapy, but had intraabdominal lymph node metastasis and mediastinal lesions develop. The patient was then treated with a novel treatment consisting of 5-fluorouracil plus valproic acid and subsequent valganciclovir to induce lytic EBV replication. This resulted in the first detectable EBV DNA levels in the blood but did not result in clinical response. Results. The patient's disease progressed, and the patient declined further cancer treatment and died. Conclusion. In contrast to EBV DNA load, EBV serology was useful in predicting distant NPC metastasis after initial complete remission in this patient. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck, 2006 [source]

Malignant Melanoma Associated with Lichen Sclerosus in the Vulva of a 10-Year-Old

PEDIATRIC DERMATOLOGY, Issue 4 2004
Ashraf M. Hassanein M.D., Ph.D.
Lichen sclerosus of the vulva in childhood is also a rare disease. The association of these two rare lesions in the vulva of young girls is extremely rare. We present a 10-year-old white girl with malignant melanoma associated with lichen sclerosus of the vulva. She had dark pigmentation of both the labia minora and posterior fourchette. The inner labia majora and fourchette showed whitish, glistening areas of skin. Histologic examination found mostly an in situ lentiginous/mucosal melanoma with focal invasion to a depth of 0.44 mm in the left upper labium majus. All specimens showed evidence of lichen sclerosus. Partial vulvectomy was performed, and no metastases were detected at the time of treatment. The patient has been disease free for the 12 months after treatment. It is critical for physicians to realize that melanoma can occur in children, and although rare, can occur in the vulva. We feel that lichen sclerosus in this instance may represent a pattern of host immune response to melanoma. [source]

Ulcerated sclerotic giant congenital melanocytic naevus: case report and review of the literature

CLINICAL & EXPERIMENTAL DERMATOLOGY, Issue 5 2007
A. Hernandez-Martin
Summary We report a case of a white girl with an ulcerated giant congenital melanocytic naevus that initially had a hard, stony consistency but in which the pigmentation and the induration are progressively vanishing. Very few cases of this variant of GCMN, known as sclerodermoid GCMN or desmoplastic hypopigmented hairless naevus, have been reported to date, and clinical evolution seems to be heterogeneous. We review the published cases and propose the term ,sclerotic hypopigmented GCMN as a common descriptor of this type of congenital melanocytic naevus. [source]

Pubertal Maturation Characteristics and the Rate of Bone Mass Development Longitudinally Toward Menarche

JOURNAL OF BONE AND MINERAL RESEARCH, Issue 4 2001
Silvia C. C. M. Van Coeverden
Abstract To assess risks for osteoporosis and to compare bone mass in different groups of healthy children or children with diseases, it is important to have knowledge of their sexual maturation status during puberty. The aim of our study was to evaluate bone mass formation longitudinally in relation to pubertal maturation characteristics in healthy white girls. We investigated the bone mineral content (BMC) and the bone mineral density (BMD) at different skeletal sites in 151 girls with increasing pubertal stages in relation with their chronological age and with an early or late onset of puberty or menarche and with a slow or fast maturation. Bone mass was measured at the onset of puberty, during puberty, and at menarche. We conclude the following: (1) from midpuberty to menarche, the increase in bone mass formation is highest at all skeletal sites in white girls; (2) early mature girls at the onset of puberty have slightly but definitely lower bone masses at all skeletal sites and at all pubertal stages than late mature girls, whereas the average bone mass formation from the onset of puberty to menarche is similar in both groups; (3) girls with a slow rate of pubertal maturation have lower bone mass values 2 years after the onset of puberty, but at menarche bone mass is similar compared with fast maturers; and (4) it cannot be confirmed that there is an effect of menarcheal age on bone mass values at menarche. Deciduous tooth crown size and asymmetry in strabismic children

ORTHODONTICS & CRANIOFACIAL RESEARCH, Issue 4 2002
T Heikkinen
Structured Abstract Authors , Heikkinen T, Alvesalo L, Tienari J Objectives , To explore deciduous tooth crown dimensions in strabismic children and the relationship between the type of strabismus and tooth crown mesio-distal (M-D) and labio-lingual (L-L) size asymmetries. Material , Dental casts at mixed dentition of 2159 Collaborative Perinatal Study black and white children were measured, 123 of them strabismic at 1 year of age, age ranging from 6 to 12 years. Methods, Directional and fluctuating asymmetries in antimeric teeth were explored in various types of strabismus having unilateral, bilateral or alternating expression. ANOVA and T-square test were used for size comparisons and calculated asymmetries were explored by comparing the variances and Pearson correlations. Results , Strabismus was associated with significant M-D size increase of deciduous maxillary canines in black boys and white girls, black girls had size reduction in their mandibular canine, but white boys were unaffected. Right side size dominance was found in the strabismic children in the lower second deciduous molar M-D dimensions and in the children with alternating strabismus in their upper deciduous canine M-D dimensions. Children with unilateral strabismus had random fluctuating dental asymmetry in their upper deciduous second molar L-L dimensions when compared with healthy normals. Higher left-right correlations were found in lower second deciduous molar dimensions in strabismic girls when compared with that in controls and in strabismic boys, suggesting better developmental canalization in female. Conclusions , Asymmetries in the head area, such as promoted here in strabismic children, may have associations with asymmetries in the dentition, focusing the embryonal origins and timing of developmental processes. The transition to post-industrial BMI values among US children

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF HUMAN BIOLOGY, Issue 2 2009
John Komlos
The trend in the BMI values of US children has not been estimated very convincingly because of the absence of longitudinal data. Our objective is to estimate time series of BMI values by birth cohorts instead of measurement years. We use five regression models to estimate the BMI trends of non-Hispanic US-born black and white children and adolescents ages 2,19 between 1941 and 2004. The increase in BMIZ values during the period considered was 1.3, (95% CI: 1.16,; 1.44,) among black girls, 0.8, for black boys, 0.7, for white boys, and 0.6, for white girls. This translates into an increase in BMI values of some 5.6, 3.3, 2.4, and 1.5 units, respectively. While the increase in BMI values started among the birth cohorts of the 1940s among black girls, the rate of increase tended to accelerate among all four ethnic/gender groups born in the mid-1950s to early-1960s. Some regional evidence leads to the conjecture that the spread of automobiles and radios affected the BMI values of boys already in the interwar period. We suppose that the changes in lifestyle associated with the labor saving technological developments of the 20th century are associated with the weight gains observed. The increased popularity of television viewing was most prominently associated with the contemporaneous acceleration in BMI gain. Am. J. Hum. Biol., 2009. © 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc. [source]

The pubertal timing controversy in the USA, and a review of possible causative factors for the advance in timing of onset of puberty

CLINICAL ENDOCRINOLOGY, Issue 1 2006
Arnold H. Slyper
Summary Previously used standards for the diagnosis of precocious puberty in girls no longer appear to be appropriate in the USA, in that a significant number of girls are being seen in paediatricians' offices with breast budding before 8 years of age. The timing of menarche, however, has changed little over the past few decades. Early maturing girls are more likely to become obese in adolescence and adulthood than normal or late maturing girls. Early maturing white girls are heavier at the onset of puberty, but this is not the case for African-American girls or boys of either race. Boys and girls with premature pubarche may be more hyperinsulinaemic than normal children, and girls with premature pubarche more likely to develop functional ovarian and adrenal hyperandrogenism. Early menarche is preceded by prepubertal hyperinsulinaemia. It is proposed that pubertal onset, although not necessarily the tempo of puberty, is influenced by hyperinsulinaemia and insulin resistance. If this hypothesis is correct, insulin resistance may be more prevalent in US children than previously recognized. An advance in timing of onset of puberty has not been noted in other countries, although it is likely that this phenomenon may become more prevalent as other countries adopt a more American lifestyle and diet.
