Selected AbstractsTemplate Synthesis of Aligned Carbon Nanotube Arrays using Glucose as a Carbon Source: Pt Decoration of Inner and Outer Nanotube Surfaces for Fuel-Cell Catalysts,ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 6 2008Zhenhai Wen A facile method is developed to synthesize aligned arrays of open-ended carbon nanotubes (CNTs) via in situ glucose polymerization in the inner pores of anodic aluminum oxide templates under hydrothermal conditions, followed by carbonization at high temperature. Pt nanoparticles are decorated on the surfaces of the as-prepared CNTs using the incipient wet method based on the use of NaBH4 as a reductant. Characterization of the resulting structures by transmission electron microscopy and field-emission scanning electron microscopy demonstrates that the Pt nanoparticles are anchored on both the inner and outer walls of CNTs, thus giving rise to a shell,core,shell-like nanotube composite. The electrocatalytic properties of the Pt,CNT,Pt electrodes are investigated for methanol oxidation by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometric measurements. It is found that the hybrid electrodes show superior catalytic performance compared to commercial carbon-black-supported Pt. The increased catalytic efficiency of Pt might be a result of the unique morphology of these structures. C60-OH mixed by wet method was homogeneously dispersed in the rubber, while one mixed by dry method was particles in the size up to 70 ,m. The former exhibited large reinforcing and antiaging effect than the latter. The large antiaging effect was explained by the finding that C60-OH had large radical scavenging ability and gel forming ability during heat treatment. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Organoclays were obtained using wet and semi-wet modification methods. These methods enable us to obtain organoclays with adequate modifier incorporation, but organoclays with a homogeneous and narrow agglomeration size distribution were obtained only with the wet method. TS and EB were higher for nanocomposites obtained with organoclays prepared using the wet method. Analysis of Limiting Oxygen Index, UL94 test and Cone Calorimeter test showed that the retardant properties of nanocomposites were also influenced by the kind of modifiers and the modification method. Kow Abstract Nano-Precipitated CaCO3 (NPCC) are coated with stearic acid to improve its dispersion in polymer as well as to reduce agglomeration. In this work, coating was done by wet method using ethanol. Ultrasonication was applied to NPCC to de-agglomerate micron size NPCC into smaller size. Effects of amplitude, temperature and energy input of ultrasonication was investigated. The amplitude was varied from 60% to 100% whereas temperature was varied from 5°C to 45°C. The energy input was stressed up from 3.6 kJ to 180 kJ. Mean diameter of NPCC were observed by using Particle Size Analyzer and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). It was found that mean diameter of NPCC do not vary significantly with temperature. Mean diameter of NPCC, however, decreases exponentially with the energy input. Comparisons were done on NPCC coated with others methods such as dry ball milling and aqueous coating. TEM images show that coating NPCC with ultrasonication is more uniform than other methods. In addition, first derivative mass loss with temperature (DTG) reveals that NPCC coated with ultrasonication do not contain excessive free acid as exhibited by those coated in aqueous and dry ball milling.
