Selected AbstractsNovel Heteroleptic CuI Complexes with Tunable Emission Color for Efficient Phosphorescent Light-Emitting Diodes,ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 15 2007Q. Zhang Abstract A series of orange-red to red phosphorescent heteroleptic CuI complexes (the first ligand: 2,2,-biquinoline (bq), 4,4,-diphenyl-2,2,-biquinoline (dpbq) or 3,3,-methylen-4,4,-diphenyl-2,2,-biquinoline (mdpbq); the second ligand: triphenylphosphine or bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether (DPEphos)) have been synthesized and fully characterized. With highly rigid bulky biquinoline-type ligands, complexes [Cu(mdpbq)(PPh3)2](BF4) and [Cu(mdpbq)(DPEphos)](BF4) emit efficiently in 20,wt,% PMMA films with photoluminescence quantum yield of 0.56 and 0.43 and emission maximum of 606,nm and 617,nm, respectively. By doping these complexes in poly(vinyl carbazole) (PVK) or N -(4-(carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)-3,6-bis(carbazol-9-yl) carbazole (TCCz), phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) were fabricated with various device structures. The complex [Cu(mdpbq)(DPEphos)](BF4) exhibits the best device performance. With the device structure of ITO/PEDOT/TCCz:[Cu(mdpbq)(DPEphos)](BF4) (15,wt,%)/TPBI/LiF/Al (III), a current efficiency up to 6.4,cd,A,1 with the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinates of (0.61, 0.39) has been realized. To our best knowledge, this is the first report of efficient mononuclear CuI complexes with red emission. Vellis Abstract Two new soluble alternating carbazolevinylene-based polymers POXD and PTPA as well as the corresponding model compounds MOXD and MTPA were synthesized by Heck coupling. POXD and MOXD contained 2,5-diphenyloxadiazole segments, while PTPA and MTPA contained triphenylamine segments. All samples displayed high thermal stability. The polymers had higher glass transition temperature (Tg) than their corresponding model compounds. The samples showed absorption maximum at 364,403 nm with optical band gap of 2.62,2.82 eV. They emitted blue-green light with photoluminescence (PL) emission maximum at 450,501 nm and PL quantum yields in THF solution of 0.15,0.36. The absorption and the PL emission maxima of PTPA and MTPA were blue-shifted as compared to those of POXD and MOXD. The electroluminescence (EL) spectra of multilayered devices made using four materials exhibited bluish green emissions, which is well consistent with PL spectra. The EL devices made using poly(vinyl carbazole) doped with MOXD and MTPA as emitting materials showed luminances of 12.1 and 4.8 cd m,2. POXD and PTPA exhibited 25.4, and 96.3 cd m,2, respectively. The polymer containing the corresponding molecules in the repeating group showed much higher device performances. Additionally, POXD and MOXD exhibited better stability of external quantum efficiency (EQE) and luminous efficiency with current density resulting from enhancing the electron transporting properties. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A possible mechanism of copolymerization is suggested. The yield of the copolymer is increased almost 10 times by the addition of catalytic amounts of ceric ammonium nitrate as an oxidant during the electrochemical polymerization of NVCz in the presence of MEKF-R in a divided electrochemical cell. Since cerium(III) is readily oxidized to cerium(IV) at the anode, the concentration of cerium(IV) remained constant and the deposition of green poly(NVCz) can be prevented.
