    Age-related change in canopy traits shifts conspecific facilitation to interference in a semi-arid shrubland

    Shifts between facilitation and interference and their importance in shaping plant population and community dynamics have received wide recognition. Nevertheless, the causes and spatio-temporal scales of these shifts are poorly understood, yet strongly debated. This study tested the hypothesis that age-related changes in canopy structure shift the effect of a nurse shrub on their protégé from facilitation to interference, using as a model system the interaction between the dwarf shrub Sarcopoterium spinosum and conspecific new recruits, in the shrubland of the transition area between the Mediterranean and the semi-arid climatic zones of Israel. Foliation level (i.e. the percentage of canopy surface area covered with leaves), a measure of shrub canopy structure, increased with age. Shading level was significantly and positively related to foliation level. Densities of new recruits in the shrubland showed a unimodal response to canopy structure and cover: the highest densities were associated with canopies presenting low and medium foliation levels (providing 71 and 82% shade, respectively), while high foliation levels (93% shade) and open spaces among canopies were characterized by very low densities. A related field experiment using shading nets revealed that seedling survival rates followed a similar unimodal pattern, with the highest survival (ca 60%) detected in moderate shade (70%), twice as much as in full sun, and the lowest survival (ca 10%) observed in extreme shade (90%). These results support the study hypothesis on age-dependent interactions. Thus, in a semi-arid shrubland ecosystem, the transition of the "nurse shrub" from "young" to "old" stage can shift facilitation to interference. Hence, the age structure of established shrub populations determines a) the availability of suitable sites for seedling recruitment and b) the balance between facilitation versus interference effects on seedling establishment.     Crowding and disease: effects of host density on response to infection in a butterfly,parasite interaction

    Abstract. 1. Hosts experiencing frequent variation in density are thought to benefit from allocating more resources to parasite defence when density is high (,density-dependent prophylaxis'). However, high density conditions can increase intra-specific competition and induce physiological stress, hence increasing host susceptibility to infection (,crowding-stress hypothesis'). 2. We studied monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) and quantified the effects of larval rearing density on susceptibility to the protozoan parasite Ophryocystis elektroscirrha. Larvae were inoculated with parasite spores and reared at three density treatments: low, moderate, and high. We examined the effects of larval density on parasite loads, host survival, development rates, body size, and wing melanism. 3. Results showed an increase in infection probability with greater larval density. Monarchs in the moderate and high density treatments also suffered the greatest negative effects of parasite infection on body size, development rate, and adult longevity. 4. We observed greater body sizes and shorter development times for monarchs reared at moderate densities, and this was true for both unparasitised and parasite-treated monarchs. We hypothesise that this effect could result from greater larval feeding rates at moderate densities, combined with greater physiological stress at the highest densities. 5. Although monarch larvae are assumed to occur at very low densities in the wild, an analysis of continent-wide monarch larval abundance data showed that larval densities can reach high levels in year-round resident populations and during the late phase of the breeding season.     Catastrophic events and recovery from low densities in populations of otariids: implications for risk of extinction

    ABSTRACT Two key factors in a population's risk of extinction are major population declines induced by natural or anthropogenic events (catastrophes) and whether the population's rate of growth increases or decreases at very low abundance levels. These two elements should be included in any population viability analysis (PVA), but estimates of the frequency and intensity of catastrophic events and data on the dynamics of low population densities are difficult to obtain. We examined the literature on population dynamics of otariids (fur seals and sea lions), to determine how frequently populations are subjected to major population declines, and to what extent depleted populations recover from low population size. We present frequency distributions for percentage declines for otariid life-stages (pup, juvenile, adult female and male), and describe eight examples of events leading to a population decline of 50% or greater among otariids. We found that numerous otariid populations have been reduced to very low densities by exploitation (low enough to be thought extinct) and have recovered to levels where they are no longer at risk of extinction. This suggests that the reduction in population rate of increase at low densities in otariid populations may not be strong. [source]


    Effects of natural barriers on the spillover of a marine mollusc: implications for fisheries reserves

    Abstract 1.The movement of organisms and dispersal of propagules is fundamental to the maintenance of populations over time. However, the existence of barriers, created through the spatial configuration of habitats, may significantly affect dispersal patterns and thus influence community dynamics and resource sustainability. 2.Within marine environments unstructured or open habitats may form partial or complete ecological barriers due to elevated risk of predation or physical stresses associated with them. The existence and effects of such barriers may be of particular importance when considering the establishment of marine protected areas with a fisheries enhancement focus. 3.In this paper, the spillover of post-settlement queen conch (Strombus gigas) from a protected area in the Turks and Caicos Islands is investigated. It is hypothesized that the reserve boundaries overlap with a series of shallow, sand habitats that effectively enclose the protected population, reducing the spillover of conch into the adjacent fished areas. 4.To test this, density gradient maps for juvenile and adult conch populations were constructed using underwater visual survey data at 68 sites within and surrounding the protected area. These maps illustrate very low densities coinciding with poor, shallow sand habitats along the two marine boundaries of the reserve where spillover is expected to take place. 5.These sand habitats are thought to create ecological barriers to a slow, sedentary gastropod largely due to their shallowness (physical stresses of solar exposure or anoxia) and lack of food reducing the tendency of individuals to move across these areas, despite the 10-times higher density of adult queen conch observed in the protected area compared with outside.     Imaging geophysical data,taking the viewer into account

    Abstract A common way of presenting geophysical data from two-dimensional sources is as a grey-scale image. Some theoretical background to discrete image representation is described, and the deleterious effects of inappropriate (too sparse) sampling and display of such images discussed in an archaeological context. In high-quality images, such as magazine illustrations or digital television, the sampling densities can be sufficiently high to avoid the appearance of artefacts. Geophysical images in contrast are often sampled at very low densities; if the effective area of each sample is significantly less than the sample spacing, then the classic effect called ,aliasing' in communication engineering, caused by the violation of Nyquist's criterion, will be seen. Knowledge of the sensor's footprint can be used to select an appropriate sample density, and so minimize this source of distortion. To maximize the visibility of what may be low-contrast structures immersed in a high level of background noise, it is helpful also to consider the bandpass nature of the spatial frequency response of the human visual system.     Aphid-mediated coexistence of ladybirds (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and the wood ant Formica rufa: seasonal effects, interspecific variability and the evolution of a coccinellid myrmecophile.

    It is generally believed that most homopteran-eating insects avoid ant-tended colonies of Homoptera, due to the ant aggression they encounter there. However, because homopteran colonies which are ant-tended often persist for longer than untended colonies, some homopteran-eaters may utilise ant-tended Homoptera when untended colonies are scarce. Furthermore, a few homopteran-eaters are myrmecophilous, habitually coexisting with ants. To investigate these phenomena, a study was made of aphids and aphidophagous coccinellids (ladybirds) on Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris, growing in areas foraged and unforaged by the wood ant Formica rufa. The non-tended aphid Schizolachnus pineti exhibited a marked population decline in late summer but persisted in both areas at very low density. Facultatively tended Cinara aphids exhibited higher population densities when associated with F. rufa, and remaining colonies of these aphids were only found associated with ants in late summer. Coccinellids exhibited considerable interspecific variability in their level of association with F. rufa, and there was some evidence of an increase in certain species' frequencies of occurrence with the ant when Cinara aphids were all ant-tended, in late summer. Coexistence with ants appears to be associated with either an intolerance of low aphid densities, in Coccinella septempunctata and Harmonia quadripunctata, or with extreme dietary specialisation, in Myzia oblongoguttata. Similar factors to those which bring C. septempunctata into contact with ants were probably of importance in the initial stages of the evolution of myrmecophily of its congener, Coccinella magnifica.
