Brandy MD Background. Follicular grafting yields good results, but takes an excessively long time to perform the procedure. Iatrogenic damage can also occur to the follicular units during the dissection phase when two follicular units are very close together. Objective. The objective was to minimize the length of time to perform the procedure and to limit iatrogenic damage to the follicular units during the dissection phase. Methods. A donor strip is divided under a stereoscopic microscope into one-, two-, three-, and four-haired follicular units and three- and four-haired follicular groupings. Three- and four-haired follicular groupings are formed when 2 two-haired follicular units or a three-haired follicular unit and one-haired follicular unit are very close together. These hair grafts are then inserted into incisions that are 1.0 to 2.5 mm in length and are arranged in accordance to the particular hairstyle desired by the patient. Results. The technique used in this article accomplishes consistently excellent results while creating an environment that prevents damage to follicular units that are extremely close together. This technique requires less time and damages fewer follicular units. Conclusions. When performing hair restoration surgery, it is many times counterproductive to use follicular units exclusively. [source] War, Livelihoods and Vulnerability in Sri LankaDEVELOPMENT AND CHANGE, Issue 2 2004Benedikt Korf As the number of de-stabilized regions of warfare or post-war conditions worldwide continues to grow, this article investigates how civilians survive in the context of a civil war. It analyses livelihood strategies of farmers in the war-torn areas of Sri Lanka, using an analytical framework based on a revised form of DFID's sustainable rural livelihoods approach, placing particular attention on the institutional reproduction of household capital assets in the war economy. The author delineates a three pillar model of household livelihood strategies focusing on how households (1) cope with the increased level of risk and uncertainty; (2) adjust their economic and social household assets for economic survival; and (3) use their social and political assets as livelihood strategies. Empirical evidence comes from four case study villages in the east of Sri Lanka. Although the four case studies were very close together geographically, their livelihood outcomes differed considerably depending on the very specific local political geography. The role of social and political assets is essential: while social assets (extended family networks) were important to absorb migrants, political assets (alliances with power holders) were instrumental in enabling individuals, households or economic actors to stabilize or even expand their livelihood options and opportunities. The author concludes that civilians in conflict situations are not all victims (some may also be culprits in the political economy of warfare), and that war can be both a threat and an opportunity, often at the same time. [source] Insulin mimetic effects of macrocyclic binuclear oxovanadium complexes on streptozotocin-induced experimental diabetes in ratsDIABETES OBESITY & METABOLISM, Issue 6 2003B. Ramachandran Aim:, The vanadium complexes so far tested for their insulin mimetic effects are either mono- or binuclear and contain only acyclic ligands. The leaching or hydrolysis of vanadyl ions from these complexes is much easier, and hence they elicit side effects. In the present study, a new binuclear macrocyclic oxovanadium complex was synthesized, and its efficacy was studied on streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats over a period of 30 days. Methods:, The insulin mimetic effect of the complex was tested on the blood sugar level in the STZ-diabetic rats and on the activities of the carbohydrate-metabolizing enzymes present in the liver. Results:, Administration of vanadium complex to STZ-induced diabetic rats decreased blood glucose levels from hyperglycaemic to normoglycaemic when compared to diabetic rats. The activity of carbohydrate-metabolizing enzymes such as hexokinase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, glycogen synthase and glycogen content were increased to near normal in vanadium complex-administered diabetic rats. The biochemical studies such as assay of blood urea and glutamate oxaloacetate transaminases revealed that the complex is not toxic to the system. Conclusion:, The nontoxic nature of this complex may be due to the presence of the vanadyl ions in an intact macrocyclic form. Further, the vanadyl ions present in the macrocyclic binuclear oxovanadium complex are very close to each other, and this may enhance the insulin mimetic activity by synergic effect. [source] Triangulation: Davidson, Realism and Natural KindsDIALECTICA, Issue 1 2001William Child Is there a plausible middle position in the debate between realists and constructivists about categories or kinds? Such a position may seem to be contained in the account of triangulation that Donald Davidson develops in recent writings. On this account, the kinds we pick out are determined by an interaction between our shared similarity responses and causal relations between us and things in our environment. So kinds and categories are neither imposed on us by the nature of the world, nor imposed by us on an intrinsically unstructured reality. But the picture derivable from Davidson's account of triangulation can be interpreted in either of two ways. On one interpretation, it collapses into constructivism. On the other, it turns out to be very close to the most plausible versions of realism. It is argued that Davidson's attempts to distinguish his view from Putnam's realism about natural kinds are unsuccessful. So Davidson's account of triangulation does indeed suggest a plausible view of kinds. But that view is a version of traditional realist views, not an alternative to them. [source] A power function model for the basic geometry of solution dolines: considerations from the classical karst of south-central SloveniaEARTH SURFACE PROCESSES AND LANDFORMS, Issue 3 2006France Abstract Solution doline geometry is generally too complex to be expressed in terms of a few parameters. A methodology previously designed by the author, based on acquisition of specific field data and subsequent processing by various Fourier techniques, enabled doline geometry to be considered in its entirety. This paper sets out to investigate which simple rotational body (rotated power function) best fits the geometry of 38 dolines studied within the Classical Karst of Slovenia. It transpires that doline radius to depth ratio changes as a function of volume, whereas the mode of change remains stable regardless of the actual dimensions of individual dolines, and is basically the same at different locations. Doline volumes are very close of those of regular cones of the same dimensions, growing relatively deeper as the volume increases. Two poly-segment models implied by the power function model and based on earlier work are discussed. It transpires that the studied dolines may be relict forms superimposed upon pre-existing hidden shafts formed by epikarstic water. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] A reduced-order modeling technique for tall buildings with active tuned mass damperEARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING AND STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS, Issue 3 2001Zu-Qing Qu Abstract It is impractical to install sensors on every floor of a tall building to measure the full state vector because of the large number of degrees of freedom. This makes it necessary to introduce reduced-order control. A kind of system reduction scheme (dynamic condensation method) is proposed in this paper. This method is iterative and Guyan condensation is looked upon as an initial approximation of the iteration. Since the reduced-order system is updated repeatedly until a desired one is obtained, the accuracy of the reduced-order system resulting from the proposed method is much higher than that obtained from the Guyan condensation method. Another advantage of the method is that the reduced-order system is defined in the subspace of the original physical space, which makes the state vectors have physical meaning. An eigenvalue shifting technique is applied to accelerate the convergence of iteration and to make the reduced system retain all the dynamic characteristics of the full system within a given frequency range. Two schemes to establish the reduced-order system by using the proposed method are also presented and discussed in this paper. The results for a tall building with active tuned mass damper show that the proposed method is efficient for the reduced-order modelling and the accuracy is very close to exact only after two iterations. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] In Vitro Validation of a New Approach for Quantitating Regurgitations Using Proximal Isovelocity Surface AreaECHOCARDIOGRAPHY, Issue 7 2000A. Delouche The present work has been designed to validate the calculation of the effective regurgitant orifice (ERO) area with the use of a new formula that takes into account the velocity profile (Vr vs r) and that is insensitive to errors in the determination of the position of the orifice. Assuming a hemispheric model, ERO = 2,r2· Vr/Vo (with Vo= velocity at the orifice) and (Vo/Vr)0.5= (2,/ERO)0.5r. Thus, the slope of the corresponding linear regression allows ERO to be calculated as: ERO = 2,/slope2. This approach was tested in vitro in pulsatile conditions on circular, conical, and slit-like orifices. The calculated ERO was compared with the actual jet cross sectional area derived from the transverse velocity profile at the jet origin. For the purpose of comparison, the "classical" ERO was calculated for all the configurations, angulations, and threshold velocities. The relationship between (Vo/Vr)0.5 was linear (r > 0.98) over a wide range of velocities. The nonhemispheric components were found to modify the constant and not the slope. The mean variation of the calculated ERO was 6.5%. The correlation between the calculated and the actual ERO was very close (>0.97) with slope equal to 0.96. By comparison with the new method, the classical formula gave an underestimation of the ERO that dramatically increased when studying the flow closer to the orifice or in the case of error on the measurement of r. In conclusion, a method using velocity profiles instead of isolated values improves the accuracy of the proximal isovelocity surface area (PISA) method for measuring the ERO. [source] A new evaluation technique for the detection of impurities in purified proteins via CE with native UV-LIFELECTROPHORESIS, Issue 2 2010Audrey Rodat Abstract An analytical methodology for quality control analyses of IgG and their impurities is presented using a new UV-LIF (266,nm) detector inside the cassette of a CE instrument and its performance was evaluated. The observed sensitivity was very close to that obtained by silver staining of slab gels (LOD of 25,ng/mL), while the sensitivity of the analysis is 80 times better than with CE/UV absorption (214,nm). Examples of the analysis of pharmaceutical and other commercial IgGs are provided and the kinetics of the reduction of IgG by ,-mercaptoethanol is reported, demonstrating the ease of performing the analysis. [source] Detection of chlorinated quinones using interdigitated electrodes coupled with capillary electrophoresisELECTROPHORESIS, Issue 6 2003Keith B. Male Abstract An array of eight interdigitated microband gold electrodes (IDEs) has been developed together with electrophoretic separation for analysis of chlorinated hydroquinones (ClHQs) and benzoquinones (ClBQs). The IDE chip positioned very close to the separation capillary outlet served as an amplification/detection system without the requirement for frequent "capillary-electrode" alignment. ClHQs, electrophoretically migrating to the IDE surface, were oxidized at +1.1 V by seven electrodes of the array and then detected by the remaining electrode, poised at ,0.1 V. Conversely, ClBQs were detected at +1.1 V by the detecting electrode after having been reduced at the 7 adjacent electrodes poised at ,0.1 V. There was an amplification effect on both the detecting electrode as well as the adjacent electrodes because of the recycle between ClHQs and ClBQs. The detecting "amplification" current response was dependent on the potentials applied, the position of the detecting electrode on the array, the number of adjacent electrodes being used for recycling and the distance between the oxidative and reductive electrodes. Micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) separation of the analytes was achieved using 30 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) with a detection limit in the range of 2,20 ,M. In addition to a facile "capillary-electrode" alignment, the important aspect described here was the capability of detecting through recycling a reduced compound (in the case of ClHQs) at a negative potential to circumvent fouling and electroactive interferences. An appealing feature was also the concurrent oxidation/reduction detection for each compound to ascertain peak assignment, as interfering compounds are less likely to exhibit the same oxidative/reductive characteristics and electrophoretic mobilities as the target analytes. [source] A novel brain receptor is expressed in a distinct population of olfactory sensory neuronsEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF NEUROSCIENCE, Issue 11 2000Sidonie Conzelmann Abstract Three novel G-protein-coupled receptor genes related to the previously described RA1c gene have been isolated from the mouse genome. Expression of these genes has been detected in distinct areas of the brain and also in the olfactory epithelium of the nose. Developmental studies revealed a differential onset of expression: in the brain at embryonic stage 17, in the olfactory system at stage E12. In order to determine which cell type in the olfactory epithelium expresses this unique receptor type, a transgenic approach was employed which allowed a coexpression of histological markers together with the receptor and thus visualization of the appropriate cell population. It was found that the receptor-expressing cells were located very close to the basal membrane of the epithelium; however, the cells extended a dendritic process to the epithelial surface and their axons projected into the main olfactory bulb where they converged onto two or three glomeruli in the dorsal and posterior region of the bulb. Thus, these data provide evidence that this unique type of receptor is expressed in mature olfactory neurons and suggests that it may be involved in the detection of special odour molecules. [source] A Comparison of Conventional Local Approach and the Short Crack Approach to Fatigue Crack Initiation at a Notch,ADVANCED ENGINEERING MATERIALS, Issue 9 2009Narayanaswami Ranganathan Methods to estimate fatigue crack initiation life at a notch tip are compared. The methods used determine the strain amplitudes at the notch tip using Neuber's or Glinka's approximation. In conventional approaches, equivalent-damage levels are determined, using appropriate strain-life relationships coupled with damage-summation models. In the short-crack approach, a crack-like defect is assumed to exist at the notch tip. It is shown that the short-crack concept can be successfully applied to predict crack-initiation behavior at a notch. Model predictions are compared with carefully designed experiments. It is shown that model predictions are very close to experimentally measured lives under an aircraft-wing loading spectrum. A new adaptive routing algorithm and a new buffer management scheme are presented, and their performance are compared to that of the best algorithms known in the literature. Both the new proposals exhibit significant improvements in throughput and delay with respect to the older ones, for various MAN topologies, sizes and buffer dimensions. [source] High-Performance Air-Stable n-Type Organic Transistors Based on Core-Chlorinated Naphthalene Tetracarboxylic DiimidesADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 13 2010Joon Hak Oh Abstract Core-chlorinated naphthalene tetracarboxylic diimides (NDIs) with fluoroalkyl chains are synthesized and employed for n-channel organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). Structural analyses of the single crystals and thin films are performed and their charge-transport behavior is investigated in terms of structure,property relationships. NDIs with two chlorine substituents are shown to exhibit a herringbone structure with a very close ,-plane distance (3.3,3.4,Å), a large ,-stack overlap (slipping angle ca. 62°), and high crystal densities (2.046,2.091,g,cm,3). These features result in excellent field-effect mobilities of up to 1.43,cm2,V,1,s,1 with minimal hysteresis and high on,off ratios (ca. 107) in air. This is similar to the highest n-channel mobilities in air reported so far. Despite the repulsive interactions of bulky Cl substituents, tetrachlorinated NDIs adopt a slip-stacked face-to-face packing with an interplanar distance of around 3.4,Å, resulting in a high mobility (up to 0.44,cm2,V,1,s,1). The air-stability of dichlorinated NDIs is superior to that of tetrachlorinated NDIs, despite of their higher LUMO levels. This is closely related to the denser packing of the fluorocarbon chains of dichlorinated NDIs, which serves as a kinetic barrier to the diffusion of ambient oxidants. Interestingly, these NDIs show an optimal performance either on bare SiO2 or on octadecyltrimethoxysilane (OTS)-treated SiO2, depending on the carbon number of the fluoroalkyl chains. Their synthetic simplicity and processing versatility combined with their high performance make these semiconductors highly promising for practical applications in flexible electronics. [source] Surface temperature measurements on burning materials using an infrared pyrometer: accounting for emissivity and reflection of external radiationFIRE AND MATERIALS, Issue 1 2004Joe Urbas Abstract This paper demonstrates the successful use of an infrared pyrometer, operating in the 8,10 µm wavelength band, to measure the surface temperature of combustible specimens in a heat release calorimeter. The temperature histories of ten different materials were measured in the ICAL (intermediate scale calorimeter). The set of materials comprised four wood products, gypsum board, polyisocyanurate foam, PVC floor tile, PMMA and two non-combustible boards. A small-diameter bare thermocouple was installed on each specimen in order to determine an accurate temperature for comparison. The spectral emissivity and the spectral flux reflected from the surface were measured simultaneously and used to correct the apparent temperature measured by the pyrometer. The spectral emissivity and reflected spectral flux were both constant prior to ignition for all the combustible materials. During the burning phase all the combustible materials had a spectral emissivity very close to unity. The agreement between the temperatures measured with the pyrometer and thermocouple was not affected by the flame. The wood products, the polyisocyanurate foam and the calcium silicate board required no correction for reflected spectral flux over the whole temperature range. [source] Life histories of Eucalanus bungii and Neocalanus cristatus (Copepoda: Calanoida) in the western subarctic Pacific OceanFISHERIES OCEANOGRAPHY, Issue 2004ATSUSHI TSUDA Abstract Life cycles of the large suspension-feeding copepods, Eucalanus bungii and Neocalanus cristatus were investigated by seasonal sampling in the western subarctic Pacific. Eucalanus bungii has a diapause from August to March at copepodite stages between copepodite 3 (C3) and C6 female. We propose that individuals with early birth dates are young of overwintering C5 and C6-females that develop to C4 in their birth year, while individuals with late birth dates are young of overwintering C4 that develop to C3 in their birth year. Thus, a majority of the population has annual generations alternating with biennial generations. Neocalanus cristatus showed life history almost identical to the population in the Alaskan gyre. Timing of the life cycle in N. cristatus is very close to that in the eastern subarctic gyre, but that of E. bungii is 2 months earlier than in the eastern subarctic. This difference is probably caused by the timing difference in the maximum primary production in the two areas and the plasticity of the life cycle strategy in E. bungii. Saikkonen Summary We examined foliar endophyte frequencies in two native (Betula pendula and Betula pubescens) and three exotic (Betula ermanii, Betula platyphylla and Betula resinifera) birch species and their hybrids in Punkaharju, Finland. The most frequently isolated endophytic fungi in the experimental trees were Fusicladium betulae and Gnomonia setacea making up 80,90% of all endophyte infections. Total endophyte infection levels varied from 0.5 colony forming units (CFU)/cm2 in B. platyphylla to 8.6 CFU/cm2 in B. pubescens that had highest total infection levels of both examined endophyte species. The resistance of hybrids was generally very close to the more resistant parent (the only exception being Fusicladium in B. platyphylla × B. pendula hybrid) supporting the hypothesis that the resistance of birch hybrids to these fungi is genetically based and caused by dominant inheritance of resistance traits. Résumé La fréquence d'endophytes foliaires a été étudiée chez deux espèces indigènes de bouleau (Betula pendula et Betula pubescens), trois espèces exotiques (Betula ermanii, Betula platyphylla et Betula resinifera) et leurs hybrides, à Punkaharju, Finlande. Les champignons endophytes les plus fréquemment isolés des arbres étudiés ont étéFusicladium betulae et Gnomonia setacea, qui constituent 80 à 90% de l'ensemble des infections endophytes. Les niveaux totaux d'infection endophyte varient de 0.5 CFU/cm2 chez B. platyphyllaà 8.6 CFU/cm2 chez B. pubescens, qui présente les plus forts niveaux d'infection pour chacune des deux espèces endophytes étudiées. Die Anzahl der aus einem Quadratzentimeter isolierten koloniebildenden Einheiten (CFU/cm2) variierte von 0,5 bei B. platyphylla bis 8,6 CFU/cm2 bei B. pubescens. Letztere hatte die höchste Isolierhäufigkeit bei beiden untersuchten Endophytenarten. [source] Multifunctional Fluorene-Based Oligomers with Novel Spiro-Annulated Triarylamine: Efficient, Stable Deep-Blue Electroluminescence, Good Hole Injection, and Transporting Materials with Very High TgADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 24 2009Zuoquan Jiang Abstract A series of fluorene-based oligomers with novel spiro-annulated triarylamine structures, namely DFSTPA, TFSTPA, and TFSDTC, are synthesized by a Suzuki cross-coupling reaction. The spiro-configuration molecular structures lead to very high glass transition temperatures (197,253,°C) and weak intermolecular interactions, and consequently the structures retain good morphological stability and high fluorescence quantum efficiencies(0.69,0.98). This molecular design simultaneously solves the spectral stability problems and hole-injection and transport issues for fluorene-based blue-light-emitting materials. Simple double-layer electroluminescence (EL) devices with a configuration of ITO/TFSTPA (device A) or TFSDTC (device B)/ TPBI/LiF/Al, where TFSTPA and TFSDTC serve as hole-transporting blue-light-emitting materials, show a deep-blue emission with a peak around 432,nm, and CIE coordinates of (0.17, 0.12) for TFSTPA and (0.16, 0.07) for TFSDTC, respectively, which are very close to the National Television System Committee (NTSC) standard for blue (0.15, 0.07). The maximum current efficiency/external quantum efficiencies are 1.63,cd A,1/1.6% for device A and 1.91,cd A,1/2.7% for device B, respectively. In addition, a device with the structure ITO/DFSTPA/Alq3/LiF/Al, where DFSTPA acts as both the hole-injection and -transporting material, is shown to achieve a good performance, with a maximum luminance of 14,047,cd m,2, and a maximum current efficiency of 5.56,cd A,1. These values are significantly higher than those of devices based on commonly usedN,N,-di(1-naphthyl)- N,N,-diphenyl-[1,1,-biphenyl]-4,4,-diamine (NPB) as the hole-transporting layer (11,738,cd m,2 and 3.97,cd A,1) under identical device conditions. [source] Experimental tail shortening in Barn Swallows (Hirundo rustica) affects haematocritFUNCTIONAL ECOLOGY, Issue 5 2005J. J. CUERVO Summary 1Recent studies in Scotland suggest that the outermost tail feathers of Barn Swallows (Hirundo rustica Linnaeus) may be around 10,12 mm longer than the aerodynamic optimum, with sexual selection for long tails accounting for this extra length. 2To test this hypothesis, we shortened the outermost tail feathers in male and female Barn Swallows in southern Spain by cutting 1, 11 or 21 mm from the tips of the feathers, and checked for change in haematocrit 1 month later. Haematocrit levels were high when birds arrived at the breeding grounds due to an intense effort for flight during migration, but these levels decreased during the breeding season. We predicted that this decrease would be more pronounced when tail length was closer to the aerodynamic optimum (tails shortened by 11 mm), and less pronounced as tail length was displaced from that optimum (tails shortened by 1 or 21 mm). 3Contrary to expectations, we found that the smaller the experimental reduction in tail length, the more pronounced the decrease in haematocrit. Barn Swallows with little parental effort and originally long tail feathers experienced a more pronounced decrease in haematocrit than individuals with strong parental effort and originally short tail feathers, respectively, although only in the group of birds with tails shortened by 21 mm. 4These results do not support the hypothesis that outermost tail feathers in Barn Swallows have been elongated because of sexual selection, at least in the population studied, but are consistent with tail length being at an aerodynamic optimum, or very close to it. Thus realistic genetic/statistical models can include an extremely large number of parameters, and it is by no means obvious how to find the variants contributing to liability. For models of multiple candidate genes and their interactions, we prove that statistical inference can be based on controlling the false discovery rate (FDR), which is defined as the expected number of false rejections divided by the number of rejections. Controlling the FDR automatically controls the overall error rate in the special case that all the null hypotheses are true. So do more standard methods such as Bonferroni correction. However, when some null hypotheses are false, the goals of Bonferroni and FDR differ, and FDR will have better power. Model selection procedures, such as forward stepwise regression, are often used to choose important predictors for complex models. By analysis of simulations of such models, we compare a computationally efficient form of forward stepwise regression against the FDR methods. We show that model selection includes numerous genetic variants having no impact on the trait, whereas FDR maintains a false-positive rate very close to the nominal rate. With good control over false positives and better power than Bonferroni, the FDR-based methods we introduce present a viable means of evaluating complex, multivariate genetic models. Naturally, as for any method seeking to explore complex genetic models, the power of the methods is limited by sample size and model complexity. [source] Routine Analyses of Trace Elements in Geological Samples using Flow Injection and Low Pressure On-Line Liquid Chromatography Coupled to ICP-MS: A Study of Geochemical Reference Materials BR, DR-N, UB-N, AN-G and GHGEOSTANDARDS & GEOANALYTICAL RESEARCH, Issue 2-3 2001Jean Carignan géostandards; éléments traces; flow injection; chromatographie liquide; ICP-MS We describe analytical procedures for trace element determinations developed at the CNRS Service d'Analyse des Roches et des Minéraux (SARM) and report results obtained for five geochemical reference materials: basalt BR, diorite DR-N, serpentinite UB-N, anorthosite AN-G and granite GH. Results for rare earth elements, U and Th are also reported for other reference materials including dunite DTS-1, peridotite PCC-1 and basalt BIR-1. All rocks were decomposed using alkali fusion. Analyses were done by flow injection ICP-MS and by on-line low pressure liquid chromatography (LC)-ICP-MS for samples containing very low REE, U and Th concentrations. This latter method yielded limits of determination much lower than data by direct introduction and eliminated possible isobaric interference on these elements. Although results agree with most of the working values, when available, results for some elements differed slightly from the recommended concentrations. In these cases, we propose new values for Co, Y and Zn in basalt BR, Zr in diorite DR-N, Sr and U in granite GH, and Ga and Y in anorthosite AN-G. Furthermore, although the Sb concentration measured in AN-G was very close to our limit of determination, our value (0.3 ± 0.1 ,g g,1) is much lower than the reported working value of 1.4 ± 0.2 ,g g,1. These new values would need to be confirmed by a new inter-laboratory programme to further characterise these reference materials. Results obtained for REE, Th and U concentrations using the on-line low pressure LC-ICP-MS yielded good limits of determination (ng g,1to sub-ng g,1for rocks and ng l,1to sub-ng l,1for natural waters) and accurate results. The efficiency of the matrix separation allowed accurate measurements of Eu without the need to correct the BaO isobaric interference for samples having Ba/Eu ratios as high as 27700. For REE concentrations in PCC-1 and DTS-1, differences with values reported in the literature are interpreted as resulting from possible heterogeneity of the reference materials. Thorium and U values are proposed for these two samples, as well as for AN-G and UB-N. In the gradual channel approximation, the local density of accumulated charge carriers varies as a result of applied gate bias, with the majority of the charge carriers being localized in the first few semiconductor monolayers close to the dielectric interface. In this report, a new concept is employed which enables the accumulation of charge carriers in the channel by photoinduced charge transfer. An OFET employing C60 as a semiconductor and divinyltetramethyldisiloxane-bis(benzocyclobutene) as the gate dielectric is modified by a very thin noncontinuous layer of zinc-phthalocyanine (ZnPc) at the semiconductor/dielectric interface. With this device geometry, it is possible to excite the phthalocyanine selectively and photogenerate charges directly at the semiconductor/dielectric interface via photoinduced electron transfer from ZnPc onto C60. Thus the formation of a gate induced and a photoinduced channel in the same device can be correlated. [source] Will photosynthesis of maize (Zea mays) in the US Corn Belt increase in future [CO2] rich atmospheres?GLOBAL CHANGE BIOLOGY, Issue 6 2004An analysis of diurnal courses of CO2 uptake under free-air concentration enrichment (FACE) Abstract The C4 grass Zea mays (maize or corn) is the third most important food crop globally in terms of production and demand is predicted to increase 45% from 1997 to 2020. However, the effects of rising [CO2] upon C4 plants, and Z. mays specifically, are not sufficiently understood to allow accurate predictions of future crop production. A rainfed, field experiment utilizing free-air concentration enrichment (FACE) technology in the primary area of global corn production (US Corn Belt) was undertaken to determine the effects of elevated [CO2] on corn. FACE technology allows experimental treatments to be imposed upon a complete soil,plant,atmosphere continuum with none of the effects of experimental enclosures on plant microclimate. Crop performance was compared at ambient [CO2] (354 , mol mol,1) and the elevated [CO2] (549 ,mol mol,1) predicted for 2050. Previous laboratory studies suggest that under favorable growing conditions C4 photosynthesis is not typically enhanced by elevated [CO2]. However, stomatal conductance and transpiration are decreased, which can indirectly increase photosynthesis in dry climates. Given the deep soils and relatively high rainfall of the US Corn Belt, it was predicted that photosynthesis would not be enhanced by elevated [CO2]. The diurnal course of gas exchange of upper canopy leaves was measured in situ across the growing season of 2002. Contrary to the prediction, growth at elevated [CO2] significantly increased leaf photosynthetic CO2 uptake rate (A) by up to 41%, and 10% on average. Greater A was associated with greater intercellular [CO2], lower stomatal conductance and lower transpiration. Summer rainfall during 2002 was very close to the 50-year average for this site, indicating that the year was not atypical or a drought year. The results call for a reassessment of the established view that C4 photosynthesis is insensitive to elevated [CO2] under favorable growing conditions and that the production potential of corn in the US Corn Belt will not be affected by the global rise in [CO2]. Comparing with LDV data, the validity of PIV measurements has been confirmed. Particularly, the conditions of sampling number and spatial resolution have been shown to yield reliable data using PIV. Based on the velocity fields in cold flow and combustion, the interaction between flame and flow has been discussed. It was observed that the flow field is changed by combustion and the turbulence is reduced. In order to determine statistical quantities such as mean velocity and RMS of velocity fluctuation, a sampling number of 1000 is needed. Moreover, the velocity correlation coefficient was evaluated to obtain the integral length scale of the flow. For both cold flow and combustion, the PIV estimated scale is very close to that of LDV based on the assumption of Taylor's hypothesis. DOI 10.1002/htj.20129 [source] Development of design flood hydrographs using probability density functionsHYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES, Issue 4 2010Niranjan Pramanik Abstract Probability density functions (PDFs) are used to fit the shape of hydrographs and have been popularly used for the development of synthetic unit hydrographs by many hydrologists. Nevertheless, modelling the shapes of continuous stream flow hydrographs, which are probabilistic in nature, is rare. In the present study, a novel approach was followed to model the shape of stream flow hydrographs using PDF and subsequently to develop design flood hydrographs for various return periods. Four continuous PDFs, namely, two parameter Beta, Weibull, Gamma and Lognormal, were employed to fit the shape of the hydrographs of 22 years at a site of Brahmani River in eastern India. The shapes of the observed and PDF fitted hydrographs were compared and root mean square errors, error of peak discharge (EQP) and error of time to peak (ETP) were computed. The best-fitted shape and scale parameters of all PDFs were subjected to frequency analysis and the quartiles corresponding to 20-, 50-, 100- and 200-year were estimated. The estimated parameters of each return period were used to develop the flood hydrographs for 20-, 50-, 100- and 200-year return periods. The peak discharges of the developed design flood hydrographs were compared with the design discharges estimated from the frequency analysis of 22 years of annual peak discharges at that site. Lognormal-produced peak discharge was very close to the estimated design discharge in case of 20-year flood hydrograph. On the other hand, peak discharge obtained using the Weibull PDF had close agreement with the estimated design discharge obtained from frequency analysis in case of 50-, 100- and 200-year return periods. The ranking of the PDFs based on estimation of peak of design flood hydrograph for 50-, 100- and 200-year return periods was found to have the following order: Weibull > Beta > Lognormal > Gamma. [source] Estimating fat and protein fuel from fat and muscle scores in passerinesIBIS, Issue 4 2009VOLKER SALEWSKI Fat is the prime energy source for birds during prolonged exercise, but protein is also catabolized. Estimates of the amount of catabolizable fat and protein (termed fat and protein fuel) are therefore important for studying energetics of birds. As fat and protein fuel can only be measured by sacrificing individuals or by use of technically complex methods, scoring systems were invented to estimate fat and protein fuel of birds in the field. The visible subcutaneous fat deposits and the thickness of the flight muscles are each scored on an ordinal scale but these scales do not correspond linearly to fat and protein fuel within species, which is needed for analyses such as flight range estimates. We developed an anova -type model to estimate fat and protein fuel from fat scores (FS) and muscle scores (MS) along with total mass and a size measurement. Using data from 11 337 individuals of eight passerine species (Common Nightingale Luscinia megarhynchos, Eurasian Reed Warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus, Melodious Warbler Hippolais polyglotta, Willow Warbler Phylloscopus trochilus, Orphean Warbler Sylvia hortensis, Garden Warbler Sylvia borin, Common Whitethroat Sylvia communis, Subalpine Warbler Sylvia cantillans) mist-netted in Mauritania, West Africa, we tested for independence of FS and MS and for variation in the relationship between scores and associated mass in response to physiological state. FS, MS and third primary length (size) explained variation in body mass of all eight species analysed (R2: 0.56,0.77). The parameter estimates of the model showed that fat and protein fuel increased monotonically with increasing fat and muscle scores. In two species we found small differences in the estimates between physiological states (seasons). We evaluated our model by comparing the predicted body mass of birds with both FS and MS equal to 0 with the mean body mass of individuals mist-netted with both scores equal to zero. The values were very close. The amount of fat extracted from dead Garden and Willow Warblers was within the range of predicted fat fuel derived from the model. We conclude that our model is a useful non-invasive method to estimate simultaneously mean fat and protein fuel of small passerines and we provide recommendations on its use. [source] Calculating census efficiency for river birds: a case study with the White-throated Dipper Cinclus cinclus in the PyrénéesIBIS, Issue 1 2003Frank D'Amico Using the binomial law we modelled field data to estimate the probability (p,) of detecting pairs of breeding White-throated Dippers, and the population size (N,± confidence limits). The model was divided into two parts according to whether the actual size of the population under study was known or not; in the latter case the truncated binomial model was used. Dipper abundance data were collected from three 4-km-long river tracts in the Pyrénées (France) during the breeding seasons of different years. Goodness-of-fit tests indicated that the binomial model fitted the data well. For a given visit during the survey, the estimated probability of detecting any pair of Dippers if they were present was always high (0.63,0.94) and constant from year to year but not between sites. Estimations (N,) of the size of the population provided by the binomial model were very close to that derived from mapping techniques. This study provides the first ever quantification of the number of visits required to detect birds on linear territories: three visits were necessary to detect the whole breeding population. Mixtures contained 0.5% or 1% of hydrocarbons for equivalence ratios ranging from 0.5 to 1.5. Reflected shock wave conditions were as follows: temperatures from 1300 to 1700 K and pressures from 7 to 9 atm. When compared with the previous results obtained under similar conditions, it can be observed that the reactivity of cyclopentene is much lower than that of cyclohexene, but very close to that of cyclopentane. A kinetic mechanism recently proposed for the combustion of cyclopentene in a flame has been used to model these results, and a satisfactory agreement is obtained. Elhafsi Abstract We define a ,forking node' as a service centre with one input feeding two outputs (each served by its own queue) under the control of an internal path-selection (PS) policy. We assume that both outputs lead to paths through which a packet reaches its final destination. However, the mean downstream delays on the two paths may be different and the PS policy should favour the path with the lower downstream delay. Using simulation, we compare the performance of this system under a variety of random, deterministic, state-dependent PS policies, including threshold-based and join-shortest-queue with bias (JSQ + b). We show that JSQ + b has better performance than the other alternatives. Moreover, if the input process to the forking node is Poisson, standard time series analysis techniques show that its two outputs are very close to being independent Poisson processes. Thus, if we find an accurate and efficient ,offline' analytical performance model for JSQ + b forking node, we can extend the applicability of product-form queueing networks to include such forking nodes. For this reason, we present several ways of modelling the performance of a JSQ + b node, using bounds, and compare their results on example networks.
