Selected AbstractsInfarcted intraductal papilloma of the breast: Cytologic features with stage of infarctionDIAGNOSTIC CYTOPATHOLOGY, Issue 5 2006Akinori Ishihara M.D., F.I.A.C., Ph.D. Abstract Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is being employed with increasing frequency for the pre-operative diagnostic workup of breast lesions. Although most cases show morphologic features very characteristic of specific entities, rare lesions with infarcted breast can cause problems in interpretation. We present cytologic findings in seven cases of an infarcted intraductal papilloma of the breast (IDPB) that was diagnosed by FNAC, and we also report the correlation of cytological features and stages of infarcted IDPB. In the early stage of infarction, numerous degenerative cells and necrotic debris were demonstrated. Isolated degenerative cells showed columnar, spindle, polygonal and fiber-like cells, with coagulated and smudged nuclei. Ghost cells were also seen. Extensive necrosis was demonstrated with a few sheets of ductal cells in the mid-stage of infarction. In the late stage of infarction, clusters of fibroblasts, ductal cells and necrotic debris were found. Knowledge of the characteristic cytologic pattern in different stages of infarcted IDPB may be helpful to suggest the probable pre-operative diagnosis of those lesions. Santos Abstract Recently, two analogous series of N -pyrazolylmethyl and N -triazolylmethyl N -phenylpiperazines have been prepared and found to be potential antipsychotic drugs acting as new selective ligands of the dopamine D2 receptor. Herein we report a systematic study of their high-resolution electrospray ionization mass and tandem mass spectra in which the main dissociation routes of their protonated molecules are determined and rationalized. The ESI-MS/MS data is very characteristic for both series allowing straightforward isomeric differentiation. A single and dominant fragment ion for the pyrazole series and four major fragment ions for the triazole series are useful for selective reaction MS monitoring of these potential drugs in biological fluids. [source] Trisomy 21 and Rett syndrome: A double burdenJOURNAL OF PAEDIATRICS AND CHILD HEALTH, Issue 7 2004H Leonard Abstract: Rett syndrome is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder generally affecting girls. Affected individuals are apparently normal at birth but later pass through a period of regression with loss of hand and communication skills and the development of hand stereotypies and dyspraxia. Mutations in the methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MECP2) gene, have now been found to cause Rett syndrome in up to 80% of classical cases. We report a girl with Down syndrome, one of three children with birth defects in a family of five. From the age of 18 months she developed symptomatology considered by her primary physician to be very characteristic of Rett syndrome. However, this remained a clinical diagnosis till the age of 12 years. Laboratory confirmation of the dual diagnosis, which includes a R168X mutation in the MECP2 gene in addition to trisomy 21, has now been possible. The presence of one neurological or developmental disorder does not necessarily preclude a diagnosis of Rett syndrome. [source] Structural phase transition in [NH3(CH2)5NH3]BiCl5: thermal and vibrational studiesJOURNAL OF RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY, Issue 11 2005H. Jeghnou Abstract An x-ray diffraction study carried out on the pentylenediammonium pentachlorobismuthate (III) compound [NH3(CH2)5NH3]BiCl5 indicated that it is orthorhombic with a P212121(Z = 4) space group. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were also made, which showed that this compound undergoes a unique phase transition at high temperatures. The infrared and Raman spectra recorded at room temperature were interpreted on the basis of data published in the literature. The Raman bands observed below 300 cm,1 are very characteristic of the anions, which are made of isolated (BiCl52, )n units composed of BiCl63, octahedra. Raman spectra recorded at various temperatures confirmed the contribution to the phase-transition mechanism of both the anion and cation motions. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Studies on the Volatile Compounds of Roasted Spotted ShrimpCHEMISTRY & BIODIVERSITY, Issue 12 2004Toru Tachihara The aroma of spotted shrimp (Sergia lucence Hansen) was analyzed upon roasting to determine the components that constitute the characteristic roasted shrimp flavor. Our analyses resulted in the identification of ca.,200 volatiles, including high-impact sulfur and nitrogen compounds. In addition, we synthesized all possible stereoisomers of the pyrrolidine derivatives 1 and 4, and of the imine derivatives 16 and 18,20, which are very characteristic for the aroma. The odor evaluation of these chemicals revealed distinct differences, each possessing different aroma characteristics. [source] Local selection and population structure in a deep-sea fish, the roundnose grenadier (Coryphaenoides rupestris)MOLECULAR ECOLOGY, Issue 2 2010THOMAS A. WHITE Abstract Local populations within a species can become isolated by stochastic or adaptive processes, though it is most commonly the former that we quantify. Using presumably neutral markers we can assess the time-dependent process of genetic drift, and thereby quantify patterns of differentiation in support of the effective management of diversity. However, adaptive differences can be overlooked in these studies, and these are the very characteristics that we hope to conserve by managing neutral diversity. In this study, we used 16 hypothetically neutral microsatellite markers to investigate the genetic structure of the roundnose grenadier in the North Atlantic. We found that one locus was a clear outlier under directional selection, with FST values much greater than at the remaining loci. Differentiation between populations at this locus was related to depth, suggesting directional selection, presumably acting on a linked locus. Considering only the loci identified as neutral, there remained significant population structure over the region of the North Atlantic studied. In addition to a weak pattern of isolation by distance, we identified a putative barrier to gene flow between sample sites either side of the Charlie-Gibbs Fracture Zone, which marks the location where the sub-polar front crosses the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This may reflect a boundary across which larvae are differentially distributed in separate current systems to some extent, promoting differentiation by drift. Structure due to both drift and apparent selection should be considered in management policy. [source] |
