Roberts Abstract This study examined the effects of age and sex on mental rotation performance, verbal performance, and brain-wave activity. Thirty-two 8-year-olds (16 boys) and 32 college students (16 men) had EEG recorded at baseline and while performing four computerized tasks: a two-dimensional (2D) gingerbread man mental rotation, a 2D alphanumeric mental rotation, of three-dimensional (3D) basketball player mental rotation, and lexical decision making. Additionally, participants completed a paper- and pencil water level task and an oral verbal fluency task. On the 2D alphanumeric and 3D basketball player mental rotation tasks, men performed better than boys, but the performance of women and girls did not differ. On the water level task, men performed better than women whereas there was no difference between boys and girls. No sex differences were found on the 2D gingerbread man mental rotation, lexical decision-making, and verbal fluency tasks. EEG analyses indicated that men exhibited left posterior temporal activation during the 2D alphanumeric task and that men and boys both exhibited greater left parietal activation than women and girls during the 2D gingerbread man task. On the 3D basketball player mental rotation task, all participants exhibited greater activation of the right parietal area than the left parietal area. Functional magnetic resonance imaging was used to study changes in cerebral blood oxygenation in eight remitted patients with major depression and 10 healthy control subjects during a verbal fluency task. Compared to the control subjects, the patients had a reduced response in the left prefrontal cortex (middle frontal gyrus, Brodmann area 10). These findings suggest the presence of dysfunction in the left prefrontal cortex during remission in major depression. DOI 10.1002/dev.10039 [source] A systematic review and quantitative appraisal of fMRI studies of verbal fluency: Role of the left inferior frontal gyrusHUMAN BRAIN MAPPING, Issue 10 2006Sergi G. Costafreda Abstract The left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) has consistently been associated with both phonologic and semantic operations in functional neuroimaging studies. Two main theories have proposed a different functional organization in the LIFG for these processes. One theory suggests an anatomic parcellation of phonologic and semantic operations within the LIFG. An alternative theory proposes that both processes are encompassed within a supramodal executive function in a single region in the LIFG. To test these theories, we carried out a systematic review of functional magnetic resonance imaging studies employing phonologic and semantic verbal fluency tasks. Seventeen articles meeting our pre-established criteria were found, consisting of 22 relevant experiments with 197 healthy subjects and a total of 41 peak activations in the LIFG. We determined 95% confidence intervals of the mean location (x, y, and z coordinates) of peaks of blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) responses from published phonologic and semantic verbal fluency studies using the nonparametric technique of bootstrap analysis. Significant differences were revealed in dorsal,ventral (z -coordinate) localizations of the peak BOLD response: phonologic verbal fluency peak BOLD response was significantly more dorsal to the peak associated with semantic verbal fluency (confidence interval of difference: 1.9,17.4 mm). No significant differences were evident in antero,posterior (x -coordinate) or medial,lateral (y -coordinate) positions. The results support distinct dorsal,ventral locations for phonologic and semantic processes within the LIFG. [source] Frontotemporal dementia: patient characteristics, cognition, and behaviourINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF GERIATRIC PSYCHIATRY, Issue 10 2002J. Diehl Abstract Objectives To describe sociodemographic data of patients with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), to compare the cognitive profile of patients with FTD with that of severity-matched patients with Alzheimer's disease using the CERAD neuropsychological battery (CERAD-NP), to investigate the frequency of behavioural disturbances, and to examine the relation between FTD-specific non-cognitive behavioural symptoms of patients with FTD with age and sex. Methods Fifty outpatients were diagnosed with FTD according to the Lund-Manchester consensus criteria. Cognitive impairment was assessed in 30 patients using the CERAD-NP. Severity of dementia was rated on the Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR). Eleven non-cognitive symptoms were rated by severity. To compare CERAD-NP results between patients with FTD and AD, 30 patients with AD were matched for age, sex, and global severity of cognitive performance. Results The average age at onset of first symptoms was 57.8 years. Eighteen patients (36%) had a positive family history of dementia. On the CERAD-NP patients with FTD performed significantly better than patients with AD on word list learning, delayed verbal recall and visuoconstruction (p<0.05). There were no significant differences between FTD and AD on naming and verbal fluency tasks. The most frequent non-cognitive behavioural symptoms in FTD were loss of insight, speech abnormality, and apathy. Non-cognitive behavioural symptoms were more frequent in younger and in male than in older patients and in female patients. Conclusions The CERAD-NP is a valuable clinical instrument for the cognitive evaluation of patients with suspected FTD. Complementary short tests of attention and executive function may be recommended. To enhance diagnostic sensitivity informant interviews should focus on non-cognitive behavioural changes, taking advantage of standardised questionnaires. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
