Selected AbstractsMud box,filled with stone: the wreck of the scow schooner Dan HayesINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF NAUTICAL ARCHAEOLOGY, Issue 2 2003Bradley A. Rodgers Scow Schooners are an important yet largely unstudied vessel type that operated on the North American Great Lakes. At their zenith in the later 19th century scow schooners worked between the many small harbours and the larger nexus ports such as Chicago, Detroit, and Milwaukee. These vessels are virtually undocumented either historically or archaeologically. A project by East Carolina University's Maritime Studies Program and the State Historical Society of Wisconsin in 2001 documented the wrecked scow schooner Dan Hayes, revealing much information concerning this vessel class and the limestone industry in which it was employed. Although an ordinary scow schooner, its construction techniques are surprising, showing evidence of prefabrication. The bottom of the ship was apparently built inverted and flipped over before sides and bow were added, the first evidence that inverted construction could be accomplished with such large vessels. [source] Vascular response to laser photothermolysis as a function of pulse duration, vessel type, and diameter: Implications for port wine stain laser therapyLASERS IN SURGERY AND MEDICINE, Issue 2 2002Sol Kimel PhD Abstract Background and Objective Treatment of port wine stains (PWS) by photothermolysis can be improved by optimizing laser parameters on an individual patient basis. We have studied the critical role of pulse duration (tp) on the treatment efficacy. Study Design/Materials and Methods The V-beam laser (Candela) allowed changing tp over user-specified discrete values between 1.5 and 40 milliseconds by delivering a series of 100 microsecond spikes. For the 1.5 and 3 millisecond pulses, three spikes were observed at intervals tp/2 and for tp,,,6 milliseconds, four spikes separated by tp/3. The ScleroPlus laser (Candela) has a smooth output over its fixed 1.5 milliseconds duration. Blood vessels in the chick chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) were irradiated at fixed wavelength (595 nm), spot size (7 mm), radiant exposure (15 Jcm,2), and at variable tp. The CAM contains an extensive microvascular network ranging from capillaries with diameter D,<,30 ,m to blood vessels of D,,,120 ,m. The CAM assay allows real-time video documentation, and observation of blood flow in pre-capillary arterioles (A) and post-capillary venules (V). Vessel injury was graded from recorded videotapes. Mathematical modeling was developed to interpret results of vessel injury when varying tp and D. A modified thermal relaxation time was introduced to calculate vessel wall temperature following laser exposure. Results Arterioles. For increasing tp, overall damage was found to decrease. For fixed tp, damage decreased with vessel size. Venules. For all D, damage was smaller than for corresponding arterioles. There was no dependence of damage on tp. For given tp, no variation of damage with D was observed. Photothermolysis due to spiked (V-beam) vs. smooth (Scleroplus) delivery of laser energy at fixed tp (1.5 milliseconds), showed similar vessel injuries for al values of D (P>0.05). Conclusions The difference between initial arteriole and venule damage could be explained by the threefold higher absorption coefficient at 595 nm in (oxygen-poor!) arterioles. In human patients, PWS consist of ectatic venules (characterized by higher absorption), so that these considerations favor the use of 595-nm irradiation for laser photothermolysis. For optimal treatment of PWS it is proposed that tp be between 0.1 and 1.5 milliseconds. This is based on a modified relaxation time ,d,, defined as the time required for heat conduction into the full thickness of the vessel wall, which is assumed to have a thickness ,D ,,0.1D. The corresponding ,d, will be a factor of about six smaller than given in the literature. For vessels with D between 30 and 300 ,m, ,d, ranges from 0.1 to 1.5 milliseconds. Lasers Surg. [source] Xylem heterochrony: an unappreciated key to angiosperm origin and diversificationsBOTANICAL JOURNAL OF THE LINNEAN SOCIETY, Issue 1 2009SHERWIN CARLQUIST fls All angiosperms can be arranged along a spectrum from a preponderance of juvenile traits (cambial activity lost) to one of nearly all adult characters (cambium maximally active, mature patterns realized rapidly early in ontogeny). Angiosperms are unique among seed plants in the width of this spectrum. Xylem patterns are considered here to be indicative of contemporary function, not relictual. Nevertheless, most families of early-divergent angiosperms exhibit paedomorphic xylem structure, a circumstance that is most plausibly explained by the concept that early angiosperms had sympodial growth forms featuring limited accumulation of secondary xylem. Sympodial habits have been retained in various ways not only in early-divergent angiosperms, but also among eudicots in Ranunculales. The early angiosperm vessel, relatively marginal in conductive abilities, was improved in various ways, with concurrent redesign of parenchyma and fibre systems to enhance conductive, storage and mechanical capabilities. Flexibility in degree of cambial activity and kinds of juvenile/adult expressions has been basic to diversification in eudicots as a whole. Sympodial growth that lacks cambium, such as in monocots, provides advantages by various features, such as organographic compartmentalization of tracheid and vessel types. Woody monopodial eudicots were able to diversify as a result of production of new solutions to embolism prevention and conductive efficiency, particularly in vessel design, but also in parenchyma histology. Criteria for paedomorphosis in wood include slow decrease in length of fusiform cambial initials, predominance of procumbent ray cells and lesser degrees of cambial activity. Retention of ancestral features in primary xylem (the ,refugium' effect) is, in effect, a sort of inverse evidence of acceleration of adult patterns in later formed xylem. Xylem heterochrony is analysed not only for all key groups of angiosperms (including monocots), but also for different growth forms, such as lianas, annuals, various types of perennials, rosette trees and stem succulents. Xylary phenomena that potentially could be confused with heterochrony are discussed. Heterochronous xylem features seem at least as important as other often cited factors (pollination biology) because various degrees of paedomorphic xylem are found in so many growth forms that relate in xylary terms to ecological sites. Xylem heterochrony can probably be accessed during evolution by relatively simple gene changes in a wide range of angiosperms and thus represents a current as well as a past source of variation upon which diversification was based. [source] The vascular effects of different arginase inhibitors in rat isolated aorta and mesenteric arteriesBRITISH JOURNAL OF PHARMACOLOGY, Issue 1 2009NN Huynh Background and purpose:, Arginase and nitric oxide (NO) synthase share the common substrate L-arginine, and arginase inhibition is proposed to increase NO production by increasing intracellular levels of L-arginine. Many different inhibitors are used, and here we have examined the effects of these inhibitors on vascular tissue. Experimental approach:, Each arginase inhibitor was assessed by its effects on isolated rings of aorta and mesenteric arteries from rats by: (i) their ability to preserve the tolerance to repeated applications of the endothelium-dependent agonist acetylcholine (ACh); and (ii) their direct vasorelaxant effect. Key results:, In both vessel types, tolerance (defined as a reduced response upon second application) to ACh was reversed with addition of L-arginine, (S)-(2-boronethyl)-L-cysteine HCl (BEC) or NG -Hydroxy-L-arginine (L-NOHA). On the other hand, N, -hydroxy-nor-L-arginine (nor-NOHA) significantly augmented the response to ACh, an effect that was partially reversed with L-arginine. No effect on tolerance to ACh was observed with L-valine, nor-valine or D,L, ,-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO). BEC, L-NOHA and nor-NOHA elicited endothelium-independent vasorelaxation in both endothelium intact and denuded aorta while L-valine, DFMO and nor-valine did not. Conclusions and implications:, BEC and L-NOHA, but not nor-NOHA, L-valine, DFMO or nor-valine, significantly reversed tolerance to ACh possibly conserving L-arginine levels and therefore increasing NO bioavailability. However, both BEC and L-NOHA caused endothelium-independent vasorelaxation in rat aorta, suggesting that these inhibitors have a role beyond arginase inhibition alone. Our data thus questions the interpretation of many studies using these antagonists as specific arginase inhibitors in the vasculature, without verification with other methods. [source] Mechanisms of 17 ,-oestradiol induced vasodilatation in isolated pressurized rat small arteriesBRITISH JOURNAL OF PHARMACOLOGY, Issue 3 2000Linda Shaw The influence of 17 ,-oestradiol on pressurized isolated rat mesenteric and coronary small arteries was investigated. 17 ,-oestradiol caused rapid (t1.0<5 mins) concentration-dependent relaxations of pre-contracted pressurized (50 mmHg) isolated rat mesenteric and coronary arteries. Similar responses were observed in both vessel types. Significant relaxations were only observed at concentrations exceeding 3 ,M. The vasodilatory responses in both types of artery were unaffected by 10 ,ML -nitro arginine (L -NNA) alone or in the presence of 10 ,M indomethacin, inhibitors of nitric oxide and prostaglandin synthesis respectively. They were also unaffected by the pre-contracting agent used i.e. high K+ or U46619 (a thromboxane analogue). Neither the oestrogen receptor antagonist ICI 182,780 (10 ,M) nor the protein synthesis inhibitor cycloheximide (100 ,M) had any effect on the responses of mesenteric arteries to 17 ,-oestradiol. 17 ,-oestradiol had only a minor effect on mesenteric arterial diameter over a concentration range similar to the effective vasodilatory range for 17 ,-oestradiol. Membrane impermeant 17 ,-oestradiol conjugated to bovine serum albumin (,-oestradiol-17hemisuccinate-BSA) (E-H-BSA) resulted in a vasodilatation of pressurized arteries. Wortmannin, an inhibitor of myosin light chain kinase, near maximally relaxed pressurized mesenteric arteries although the time course for the response was significantly slower than that for 17 ,-oestradiol. These results taken together suggest that the acute effects of 17 ,-oestradiol on isolated pressurized arterial tone may be due to effects directly on the vascular smooth muscle via non-genomic mechanisms that involve a stereospecific interaction at the plasma membrane.
