Cheung MD Abstract Objective: The goal of this work is to understand the neural basis for cortical representation of hearing in highly vocal primates to gain insights into the substrates for communication. Variation patterns in frequency representation among animals are incorporated into an explanatory model to reconcile heterogeneous observations. Study Design: Prospective. Methods: Thirty-four squirrel monkeys underwent microelectrode mapping experiments in primary auditory cortex (AI) using tone pip stimuli. Characteristic frequency (CF) was extracted from the excitatory frequency receptive field. Frequency maps were reconstructed using Voronoi-Dirichlet tessellation. The spatial locations (rostral vs. caudal) of highest CF isofrequency contours (minimum length 1 mm) and highest CF neuronal clusters on the temporal gyral surface were analyzed. Results: Isofrequency contours at least 1 mm long with CFs greater than 2.9 kHz (75% cases) are accessible on the temporal gyrus. Variability of the highest CF isofrequency contours accessible on the temporal gyrus has an interquartile range from 2.9 to 5.1 (mean 4.3) kHz. The highest CF isofrequency contours are located mainly in rostral AI, whereas the highest CF neuronal clusters flanking fully expressed isofrequency contours are equally distributed in rostral and caudal locations. Conclusions: Squirrel monkey AI frequency map variations are sizeable across animals and small within single animals (interhemispheric comparison). AI frequency map variations, modeled as translations and rotations relative to the lateral sulcus, are independent transfers. Caution must be exercised when interpreting nominal frequency map changes that are attributed to hearing loss and auditory learning effects. [source] Comparison of different phosphorus-fertiliser matrices to induce the recovery of phosphorus-deficient maize plantsJOURNAL OF THE SCIENCE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, Issue 6 2009Javier Erro Abstract BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated the capacity of a new type of mineral fertiliser, known as rhizosphere-controlled fertiliser (RCF), to supply adequate nutrition to plants while minimising nutrient losses. This fertiliser family is based on the presence a phosphoric matrix composed of metal,humic,phosphates, soluble not in water but in the rhizospheric acids released by plant roots as an expression of nutritional needs, principally citric acid. The aim of this study is to investigate the capacity of the RCF matrix and other phosphorus-containing products to induce the recovery of phosphorus-deficient maize plants. RESULTS: The results showed that RCF-based P fertilisers were able to facilitate plant recovery, measured by the dry root and shoot weights, to the same extent as a water-soluble P fertiliser (monopotassium phosphate). This fact was well correlated to both the variation pattern of citric and trans -aconitic acids in the shoot and roots during the treatment, and P shoot and root contents. Likewise the analysis of the variation of P concentration in the nutrient solution during the treatment indicates that plant recovery is associated with the capacity of the plant to mobilise P from the different fertiliser matrices studied. CONCLUSION: These results confirm the findings obtained in previous in vitro studies and indicate the suitability of RCF strategy for the preparation of mineral fertilisers with a nutrient release pattern more sensitive to plant nutritional needs. Copyright © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry [source] Plastid DNA haplotype variation in Dactylorhiza incarnata (Orchidaceae): evidence for multiple independent colonization events into ScandinaviaNORDIC JOURNAL OF BOTANY, Issue 1 2009Mikael Hedrén The early marsh orchid, Dactylorhiza incarnata (L.) Soó s. l., grows in medium-rich to rich fens and marshes over much of Europe and parts of Asia. The species is highly polymorphic and different forms may grow together at the same site. In the present study, I tested the hypothesis that these forms represent different migrant populations that have colonized Scandinavia independently of each other, possibly from different source areas. Accessions from Scandinavia and elsewhere were screened for variation at three size-variable plastid marker loci, one polyA repeat, one polyA-polyTA-polyT repeat and one 9 bp indel. Ten haplotypes were defined on basis on the combined variation pattern. The common occurrence of several haplotypes in southern Scandinavia and adjacent areas to the south and the east of the Baltic Sea suggests that D. incarnata has been dispersed on repeated occasions across the Baltic. Also, there was some correlation between haplotype composition and morphological form on the island of Gotland, in agreement with the independent colonization hypothesis. Material from northernmost Sweden, Finland and northwest Russia was fixed for a single widespread haplotype, indicating that populations in this area are located farther away from the Pleistocene refugia. Dactylorhiza incarnata ssp. lobelii from southwest Norway was characterized by a haplotype that was not encountered elsewhere in Scandinavia. Given its proximity to British populations dominated by the same haplotype, it is suggested that D. incarnata ssp. lobelii was established independently of the other Scandinavian populations, from coastal refugia located in western Europe. [source] Circadian and Gender Effects on Repolarization in Healthy Adults: A Study Using Harmonic Regression AnalysisANNALS OF NONINVASIVE ELECTROCARDIOLOGY, Issue 1 2010Kenneth A. Mayuga M.D. Background: Sudden cardiac death and myocardial infarction have a circadian variation with a peak incidence in the early morning hours. Increased dispersion of repolarization facilitates the development of conduction delay necessary to induce sustained arrhythmia. Both QT-dispersion and T-wave peak to T-wave end (TpTe) have been proposed as markers of dispersion of myocardial repolarization. Methods: Forty healthy adults (20 women), age 35,67 years old, with normal EKGs, echocardiograms, stress tests, and tilt-table tests were analyzed during a 27-hour hospital stay. EKGs were done at eight different time points. QT-intervals, QT-dispersion, and TpTe were measured at each time point. Harmonic regression was used to model circadian periodicity, P < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: The composite QT-interval was longer in women than in men (416 ± 17 msec vs 411 ± 20 msec, respectively, P = 0.006). The QT-dispersion among all leads was greater in men than women (37 ± 13 msec vs 30 ± 11 msec, respectively, P < 0.0001); a similar difference was found in the precordial leads. Harmonic regression showed that QT-dispersion had a significant circadian variation, primarily in men. In men, the maximum QT-dispersion occurred at 6 AM (45 ± 15 msec). TpTe also had a significant circadian variation that was not affected by gender in the majority of leads. Conclusions: A circadian variation exists in the dispersion of myocardial repolarization, as measured by both TpTe and QT-dispersion. Men and women have a different circadian variation pattern. Further studies regarding the mechanisms and clinical implications are needed. Ann Noninvasive Electrocardiol 2010;15(1):3,10 [source] Staggered Flowering in Four Sympatric Varieties of Geonoma cuneata (Palmae),BIOTROPICA, Issue 4 2002Finn Borchsenius ABSTRACT Phenology, flowering biology, and pollination were studied for one year in four sympatric varieties of the polymorphic palm Geonoma cuneata in Ecuador. Flowering seasons of the three most common varieties were significantly staggered resulting in minimal temporal overlap. No marked differences were found with respect to flowering biology or pollination. The implication of these findings for explaining the complicated morphological variation pattern found in G. cuneata and similar species complexes is discussed. [source] Myofibroblasts in the normal conjunctival surfaceACTA OPHTHALMOLOGICA, Issue 4 2010Ximena Aguilar Abstract. Purpose:, To investigate the occurrence of myofibroblasts (MFBs) in the normal conjunctival surface and to evaluate any anatomical and time-related variations. Methods: MFBs were screened among healthy individuals (35 eyes) by collecting impression cytology (IC) samples from the bulbar conjunctiva. A cohort of volunteers (12 eyes) was followed for 1 year by taking two to five imprints every month. MFBs were identified by immunohistochemical localization of the MFB marker ,-smooth-muscle actin (,-SMA). Results:, Using a filter imprint technique, MFBs were found consistently in 94% of samples from the conjunctival surface of participating individuals. The overall MFB levels, expressed as percentage of all cells on the filter, were highest in March,May [mean 4.1%, standard deviation (SD) ± 1.5] and lowest in December,February (mean 1.2%, SD ± 0.5). The difference was statistically significant [p < 0.0005, Friedman test, one-way repeated measures analysis of variance (anova)]. Moreover, there was a clear divergence of MFB density between the nasal, temporal, superior and inferior bulbar conjunctiva (mean 1.7%, 1.9%, 22% and 9.7%, respectively). Conclusion:, MFBs, known as a cellular constituent of granulation tissue in wound healing, occur in the normal conjunctival surface, which is a novel finding. Our results also show that MFB level follows a seasonal variation pattern in a temperate climate, increasing in April,September and decreasing in October,March. This variation might reflect a degree of a transient or ongoing state of tissue repair after conjunctival trauma or stress caused by exposure to environmental factors. [source] Landscape composition and vole outbreaks: evidence from an eight year study of Arvicola terrestrisECOGRAPHY, Issue 6 2000E. Fichet-Calvet This study investigates the relationships between landscape composition and the population dynamics of the fossorial water vole Arvicola terrestris. Land use patterns were studied based on agricultural and forestry data from the French Ministry of Agriculture collected in 1955 and 1988. In the Massif Central, France, water vole populations were monitored from 1985 to 1993 by using index methods. Outbreaks of water vole populations occurred in many dispersed epicentres and spread suddenly and widely over > 7500 km2. At a regional scale, the fluctuation lasts six years on average with an outbreak period lasting from two to three years. Density variation patterns are positively correlated with the proportion of permanent grassland to agricultural land. A high risk of outbreak is linked to a high proportion of permanent grassland (over 90%), whereas a low risk of outbreak is linked to a proportion of < 80%, Conversely, density variation patterns are negatively correlated with the proportion of temporary grassland to agricultural land and with the proportion of forest to total land in the western (major) part of the study area. Temporary grassland thus appears to be a marginal habitat for water voles and extensive forests could act as a brake on outbreaks. The increase in the area of permanent grassland from 1955 to 1988 was apparently the major cause of chronic high densities of water voles. Therefore, land use and landscape management could be one way to control water vole outbreaks. [source] The autocorrelation matrix probing biochemical relationships after metabolic fingerprinting with CEELECTROPHORESIS, Issue 7 2009Santiago Angulo Abstract Fingerprinting together with statistical analysis is often employed to compare samples in metabonomic studies of a disease. Correlation algorithms can aid by extracting information based on the variation patterns of key metabolites. This information can be linked to metabolite identification or to specific up/down-regulated biochemical pathways. Matlab-based software employing the Pearson's correlation algorithm was applied to urine electropherograms from 20 mice infected with the schistosoma parasite. The fingerprints were the sum of electropherograms analysed with normal and reverse polarity, in two different modes MEKC and CZE and with two different capillaries (uncoated and polyacrylamide coated) to provide a broad picture of the samples. Hippurate, a metabolite that was depleted in the infected group and is present in both polarities, was chosen as a test variable; it correlated with itself to a p value of <0.000. Phenylacetylglycine, a metabolite shown as over expressed in the disease, was positively correlated to three metabolites in its same pathway with a correlation coefficient of 0.7 and p<0.000 to phenylalanine, 0.7 and p<0.000 to 2-hydroxyphenylacetic and 0.55 and p<0.003 to phenylacetate. The study shows that the autocorrelation matrix is able to provide extra information from data files acquired by CE analyses. It underlined an up-regulated metabolic path by association in the schistosoma infection model. [source] Geographical and individual variation in echolocation calls of the intermediate leaf-nosed bat, Hipposideros larvatusETHOLOGY, Issue 8 2010Tinglei Jiang The cause and significance of variation in echolocation call frequency within hipposiderid bats is not well understood despite an increasing number of allopatric and sympatric examples being documented. We examined variation patterns in the resting frequency (RF) of echolocation calls emitted by the intermediate leaf-nosed bat, Hipposideros larvatus, on a broad geographical scale. Data mining technology and Kruskal,Wallis test both showed substantial variation with a longitudinal pattern in RF in H. larvatus among colonies, and this variation was associated with geographical distance and not body size. In addition, we found that a high degree of variability between individuals was hidden under the geographical variation. The results support an effect of random cultural drift, and challenge the prey detection hypothesis. Moreover, an acoustic difference among local island colonies may be indicative of a vocal dialect. We found that each colony of H. larvatus seems to maintain a ,private bandwidth', which could be used for colony identity and individual communication thus helping individuals and colonies to get a number of fitness benefits. [source] Causal factors for spatial variation in long-term phenological trends in Ginkgo biloba L. in JapanINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CLIMATOLOGY, Issue 9 2010Kazuho Matsumoto Abstract Distinct plant phenological changes caused by increasing temperature have been reported in several regions. However, spatial patterns in long-term phenological trends and their causal factors have not been fully examined. Attempts were made to address these issues using a long-term (1961,2000) phenological dataset (budding and leaf fall dates) for Ginkgo biloba L. from 60 meteorological stations in Japan. Although many stations indicated earlier budding and delayed leaf fall, there were large differences among stations. First, the author tried to understand the spatial variation patterns of the long-term phenological trends relative to geography. However, there was no significant relationship between phenological trends and geographical variables: latitude, longitude, and altitude, with the exception of a negative relationship between the trend of leaf fall date and latitude. Second, relationships between phenological trends, long-term trends in air temperature, and phenological sensitivity of Ginkgo to variations in air temperature were investigated as direct causal factors for spatial variations in phenological trends. With respect to the air temperature trend, a negative relationship was found with the budding trend, but there was no obvious relationship with the leaf fall trend. On the other hand, the spatial variability of the phenological sensitivity to temperature was relatively large and displayed a significant linear relationship with trends in budding and leaf fall. Where trees had higher sensitivity to temperature, they showed earlier budding and delayed leaf fall. The results obtained from multiple linear regressions indicated that the spatial variations in phenological trends were dependent more on phenological sensitivity to air temperature than temperature trends. Copyright © 2009 Royal Meteorological Society [source] Microcellular foaming of PE/PP blendsJOURNAL OF APPLIED POLYMER SCIENCE, Issue 6 2007Ping Zhang Abstract Three different polyethylene/polypropylene (PE/PP) blends were microcellular foamed and their crystallinities and melt strengths were investigated. The relationship between crystallinity, melt strength, and cellular structure was studied. Experimental results showed that the three blends had similar variation patterns in respect of crystallinity, melt strength, and cellular structure, and these variation patterns were correlative for each blend. For all blends, the melt strength and PP melting point initially heightened and then lowered, the PP crystallinity first decreased, and then increased as the PE content increased. At PE content of 30%, the melt strength and PP melting point were highest and the PP crystallinity was least. The blend with lower PP crystallinity and higher melt strength had better cellular structure and broader microcellular foaming temperature range. So, three blends had best cellular structure at PE content of 30%. Furthermore, when compared with PE/homopolymer (hPP) blend, the PE/copolymer PP (cPP) blend had higher melt strength, better cellular structure, and wider microcellular foaming temperature range, so it was more suited to be microcellular foamed. Are the variation patterns in liana communities within treefall gaps associated with their climbing mechanisms? Location: Subtropical montane forests in northwestern Argentina. Methods: We used ordination analyses (NMDS) and multiple regressions to describe liana communities (species and climbing groups, stems , 1 cm) in 35 gaps located in a 6-ha plot and to assess relationships with aspect, canopy and subcanopy openness, age and density of recent (three to eight years old) and old (> 8 years old) gaps. Results: Treefall gaps segregated in the ordination diagrams based on their liana species and climbing mechanisms composition: gaps surrounded by a higher density of recent gaps showed higher densities of lianas species using tendrils, spines/hooks and voluble stems. Liana density and richness (independent of stem density) were also positively associated with the density of recent gaps in the surroundings, and negatively associated to gap age. The number of liana species corrected per area was negatively associated to gap aspect and subcanopy openness, and absolute number of liana species was positively associated to gap canopy openness. Conclusions: This study integrates the analysis of different factors influencing liana communities within treefall gaps, and shows that spatial context of gap density (a variable largely neglected in previous studies) is particularly important on lianas composition and diversity, probably by increasing propagule input and the availability of small trellises for support. [source] Fragile Convergence: Understanding Variation in the Enforcement of China's Industrial Pollution LawLAW & POLICY, Issue 1 2010BENJAMIN VAN ROOIJ Official statistics and independent survey data show that in the last decade China has witnessed a remarkable change in its enforcement of environmental pollution violations, moving toward more formalistic and coercive law enforcement with more enforcement cases as well as higher fines. The data also show that there is considerable regional variation with coastal areas having more and higher punishments than those inland. This article explores these findings, seeking to understand the explanation and meaning of these temporal and regional variation patterns. The study shows how enforcement varies when there is a convergence of governmental, social, and economic institutional forces. The article argues that the basis for such convergence has been fragile, as national pressures have lacked consistency and local community and government support evaporates when dominant sources of income are at stake. [source] High population differentiation and unusual haplotype structure in a shade-intolerant pioneer tree species, Zanthoxylum ailanthoides (Rutaceae) revealed by analysis of DNA polymorphism at four nuclear lociMOLECULAR ECOLOGY, Issue 10 2008K. KAMIYA Abstract Differences in demographic history, life-history traits, and breeding systems affect nucleotide variation patterns. It is expected that shade-intolerant pioneer tree species have different patterns of genetic polymorphism and population structure than climax species. We studied patterns of nucleotide polymorphism at four putative starch pathway loci (agpSA, agpSB, agpL, and GBSSI) in Zanthoxylum ailanthoides, a shade-intolerant pioneer tree species that occupies forest gaps in warm-temperate forests of East Asia. Genetic diversity was lower within each population than among populations, and differentiation among populations was high across the loci (FST = 0.32,0.64), as expected from the insect-pollinated breeding system and the metapopulation structure of this pioneer species. Numbers of haplotypes were smaller than those expected from the observed numbers of segregating sites. Single haplotypes accounted for more than 47% of all the sampled genes at the respective loci. These variation patterns were incompatible with neutral predictions for populations of a finite island model. Complex population dynamics, such as bottleneck and/or admixture, in the history of this pioneer tree species might have resulted in the observed patterns of genetic variation and population structure, which are different from those of climax wind-pollinated tree species, such as conifers. In contrast to the other loci investigated in this study, agpL showed nearly no variation in Z. ailanthoides (one singleton only), but there was some extent of variation in a closely related species, Zanthoxylum schinifolium. This suggests possibly a recent selective sweep at or near the locus in Z. ailanthoides. [source] New polymorphic microsatellite loci for the Macedonian crested newt, Triturus macedonicus, and cross-priming testing in four other crested newt speciesMOLECULAR ECOLOGY RESOURCES, Issue 6 2008K. SOTIROPOULOS Abstract Eleven microsatellites have been characterized for Triturus macedonicus. Nine loci showed different variation patterns in a sample of 40 individuals from a single breeding pond in Zagori province (Greece), with an average number of 4.2 alleles per locus and an expected heterozygosity ranging from 0.1199 to 0.8079. Distinct cross-priming amplification rates were recovered on four additional crested newt species. Two monomorphic T. macedonicus loci were polymorphic in other Triturus species. The microsatellites developed herein could be a useful intraspecific genetic tool to undertake fine-scale population genetic analyses as well as in the study of contact zones between crested newt species. [source] A comparative analysis of internal cranial anatomy in the hylobatidaeAMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY, Issue 2 2010Erin Rae Leslie Abstract Craniometric studies on the hylobatids using external metrics (Creel and Preuschoft, 1976, 1984) sorted hylobatid populations into primary species groupings which are in accordance with the four currently recognized generic-level groupings. The goal of the current study was to assess the relative orientations of the orbits, palate, and basioccipital clivus among the hylobatid genera in an effort to further clarify whether the lesser apes differ significantly in these internal cranial features and how that variation patterns across the groups. Nine angular variables quantifying orbital, palatal, and basioccipital clivus orientations were measured on lateral view radiographs of adults representing three of the four hylobatid genera: Hylobates; Nomascus; and, Symphalangus. The interspecific adult hylobatid means for the angular variables were analyzed using t -test contrasts. The total sample was further subjected to discriminant function analysis (DFA) to test for the ability of craniofacial angular variables to distinguish the hylobatid genera from one another. The three hylobatid genera displayed significant morphological differentiation in orbital, palatal, and posterior skull base orientations. Normal, jackknifed, and cross-validation DFA procedures correctly identified the hylobatids 50,100% of the time. The observed morphological patterns generally mapped onto the findings of earlier external craniometric hylobatid studies and suggest concordance between specific internal and external cranial features. This article is the first comprehensive study of variation in internal cranial anatomy of the Hylobatidae and includes the first published craniofacial angular data for Nomascus. [source] Relationships between the genetic distance of Epichloë festucae isolates and the ergovaline and peramine contents of their Festuca rubra hostsANNALS OF APPLIED BIOLOGY, Issue 1 2010B.R. Vázquez-de-Aldana In semiarid grasslands of western Spain, plants of Festuca rubra are frequently infected by Epichloë festucae, an endophyte capable of producing the alkaloids ergovaline, toxic to mammals, and peramine, toxic to insects. The objectives of this paper were to estimate the variability in the content of ergovaline and peramine in plants of Festuca rubra from natural populations and to determine the relationship between the genetic distance among Epichloë strains and the alkaloid contents of plants infected by them. The results showed that a significant variation exits in the ergovaline and peramine contents of infected F. rubra plants, and that variation patterns are different for each alkaloid. Ergovaline content showed a significant variation between years. In contrast, most variation observed in the concentration of peramine occurred between populations. Mantel tests, constrained correspondence analysis (CCA) and generalised analysis of molecular variance (GAMOVA) all revealed a significant relationship between the genetic distances among 35 Epichloë isolates, and the differences in peramine content of their host plants. The relationship observed for ergovaline was more ambiguous. This indicates that plants infected by genetically close isolates of Epichloë festucae tend to be similar in terms of peramine content, while the ergovaline content of infected plants seems to be more dependent on external factors. The results of this study suggest that the selection of Epichloë festucae endophytes based on the alkaloid content of their host plants can be a successful strategy to select good or bad producers of peramine, but may not be a reliable method to detect fungal strains associated with particular ergovaline production profiles. Huang Abstract Systematic experimental work was conducted to investigate the solids acceleration length in a 0.10,m i. d., 16,m long circulating fluidized bed (CFB) riser with fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) particles over a wide range of operating conditions. A more feasible method is proposed to determine the acceleration length from the measured axial profiles of pressure gradient (or apparent solids holdup). With this new method and large amounts of experimental results, a clear picture of the variation of the acceleration length with both solids circulating rate and superficial gas velocity is obtained. It is found that the acceleration length increases generally with increasing solids flow rate and/or decreasing gas velocity. However, the particular variation patterns of the acceleration length with operating conditions are quite different in different operation ranges. Especially under the conditions near or at the accumulative choking, the acceleration length extends rapidly with increasing solids flow rate and/or decreasing gas velocity, and sometimes takes up the whole riser height. Reasonable explanations are provided for the observed variation patterns of the acceleration length. [source] |
