The preadult origins of postmaterialism: A longitudinal sibling study

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF POLITICAL RESEARCH, Issue 5 2009
MARTIN KROH
Using a research design that traces siblings' preferences for postmaterialist values in Germany over two decades, this article provides new evidence on the origins of value preferences. Focusing on Inglehart's thesis of value change, the combined socialisation and scarcity hypothesis is tested against the social learning hypothesis , a prominent rival account of preadult value preference formation. Sibling estimates show that the shared preadult environment does indeed exert lasting effects on preferences for postmaterialist policies. In addition to the weak effect of the shared experience of socioeconomic scarcity, it is found that the intergenerational transmission of postmaterialism, disregarded by Inglehart's original thesis, plays a significant role in value preference acquisition. The implications of individual-level findings for forecasts of aggregate-level trends in value change are discussed. [source]

Use of a spouted bed to improve the storage stability of wheat germ followed in paper and polyethlyene packages

JOURNAL OF THE SCIENCE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, Issue 8 2005
Füsun Yöndem-Makasc
Abstract Stabilization of wheat germ by heating in a spouted bed for 180,540 s with air at 140,200 °C was studied. The lipase activity decreased by 6,65%. Wheat germ processed at 200 °C for 360 s was ranked highest in sensory evaluation, described as having ,a golden color' and ,nutty flavor', and its lipoxygenase activity had decreased by 91.2%. This product and raw wheat germ were stored in paper, polyethylene and vacuum-packed polyethylene pouches at 5 °C, room temperature (18,26 °C) and 40 °C, and the moisture contents, water activities, free fatty acid contents and peroxide values were followed for 20 weeks. The increases were faster in paper pouches than in the polyethylene ones; vacuum packaging in polyethylene did not bring about significant improvement. The peroxide values of raw samples exceeded 10 meq O2 kg,1 oil after 3,23 days while those of the processed samples stored at room temperature or 5 °C were still less than 10 after 20 weeks. The free fatty acid content and peroxide value changes were expressed by zero order kinetics, resulting in similar activation energies for the raw and processed samples. Life values before versus after a breast cancer diagnosis,

RESEARCH IN NURSING & HEALTH, Issue 2 2002
Claudia Lampic
Abstract The main aim of this study was to investigate whether women's life values change with a breast cancer diagnosis. In addition, associations between life values and anxiety/depression ratings were investigated. Life value changes were prospectively studied in 517 women recalled for further examination after attending mammographic screening, 38 of whom were diagnosed with primary breast cancer. Life values were assessed by a study-specific version of a life value questionnaire, including ratings of the perceived attainment and importance of seven life value dimensions. Three months after being recalled, women diagnosed with primary breast cancer reported a reduction of the attainment and the importance of Health. In addition, these women reported changes in the perceived importance of Responsibility and Involvement. High levels of anxiety and depression in particular were associated with large discrepancies between attainment and importance for some life values. This suggests that changes in the perceived importance of some life values may constitute one part of women's psychological adaptation to a breast cancer diagnosis. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Measurement Entering the 21st Century: A Clear or Blocked Road Ahead?

AUSTRALIAN ACCOUNTING REVIEW, Issue 21 2000
MALCOLM C. MILLER
While progress has been made in rendering financial statements more relevant by the inclusion of current value information, a piecemeal standard-by-standard approach has resulted in a lack of consistency in the specification of the valuation bases. At the international level there is disagreement between standard- setters on a unifjing concept, with some advocating value to the entity and others favouring fair value. The IASC has a high-level steering committee addressing the key issues related to financial performance and it will be interesting to see if it can facilitate the progressive swing to current value by providing a sensible framework within which to report value changes. "Moral Panic" or Pejorative Labelling?

JOURNAL OF RELIGIOUS HISTORY, Issue 4 2009
Rethinking the Mazengarb Inquiry into Underage Sex in the Hutt Valley in 195
This article re-examines the interpretation of widespread concern over significant underage sex in the Hutt Valley, Wellington, which resulted in a government inquiry in 1954. It challenges the typical "moral panic" interpretive lens concerning the inquiry, arguing that the term obscures more than it reveals. The term focuses on reaction to the Hutt Valley affair but fails to address sufficiently the causative question of why such concern existed in the first place. The "moral panic" framing of the Hutt Valley incidents has failed to give adequate recognize that the developments were early indicators of increasing societal shifts that threatened long-held public views on sexuality; that manifest, societal, sexuality values changes in the next two decades showed that concerned people of 1954 were right within the framework of their worldview to have such concern; and that the so-called "moral panic" concern of 1954 already existed prior to the Hutt Valley disclosures.
