Selected AbstractsPreinvasive and invasive cervical cancer: an ex vivo proton magic angle spinning magnetic resonance spectroscopy studyNMR IN BIOMEDICINE, Issue 3 2004Marrita M. Mahon Abstract The aim of this study was to obtain 1H MR spectra using magic angle spinning (MAS) techniques from punch biopsies (<20,mg) of preinvasive and invasive cervical disease and to correlate the spectral profiles with sample classification on the basis of histopathology. Tissue samples were obtained at colposcopic examination, during local treatment of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) or at hysterectomy. 1H MAS MRS was performed at 25°C while spinning the sample at 4.5,kHz. After measurement, the tissue was immersed in formalin and the pathology determined. Histological examination after 1H MAS MRS defined 27 samples with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), 12 with CIN and 39 with only normal tissue. The standardized integrals of the lipid, choline and creatine regions of the spectra were significantly higher in SCC than in normal or CIN tissue. There was no obvious difference in the standardized integral of the region 4.15,3.5,ppm. The acyl fatty acid side-chain length was longer or less unsaturated in SCC than in normal tissue. Normal tissue from patients with SCC showed significantly higher triglycerides than normal tissue from patients with benign uterine disease but significantly lower triglycerides than SCC tissue. 1H MAS MRS of the uterine cervix ex vivo may be used to differentiate non-invasive from invasive cervical lesions, increase interpretation of in vivo MRS and provide insights into tumor biology. [source] Mechanisms of Infertility Associated with Clinical and Subclinical Endometritis in High Producing Dairy CattleREPRODUCTION IN DOMESTIC ANIMALS, Issue 2009IM Sheldon Contents Clinical and subclinical endometritis are common causes of infertility and subfertility in high producing dairy cattle, delaying the onset of ovarian cyclic activity after parturition, extending luteal phases and reducing conception rates. Escherichia coli and Arcanobacterium pyogenes cause endometrial damage and inflammation. Components of microbes, such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS), are detected by Toll-like receptors on endometrial cells, leading to secretion of cytokines, chemokines and antimicrobial peptides. Long luteal phases associated with endometritis are probably caused by a switch in endometrial prostaglandin production from prostaglandin F2a (PGF) to prostaglandin E2. In addition, LPS impairs the function of the hypothalamus and pituitary, and directly perturbs ovarian granulosa cells steroidogenesis, providing mechanisms to explain the association between uterine disease and anovulatory anoestrus. Cows with uterine disease that ovulate have lower peripheral plasma progesterone concentrations that may further reduce the chance of conception associated with endometritis. [source] Investigation of Cervical Patency and Uterine Appearance in Domestic Cats by Fluoroscopy and ScintigraphyREPRODUCTION IN DOMESTIC ANIMALS, Issue 5 2002K Chatdarong Contents The cervical patency of six domestic female cats was monitored under sedation by infusion of contrast medium (Omnipaque) into the cranial vagina during early oestrus, mid-oestrus, late oestrus and interoestrus or a radiopharmaceutical (99mTc-HSA) during mid- and interoestrus in a non-ovulatory oestrous cycle. The transport of the contrast medium or the radiopharmaceutical through the cervix and within the uterine horns was observed under fluoroscopy and with the aid of scintigraphy. In three of the queens, transcervical transport of contrast medium was demonstrated in all stages of oestrus, in one queen during mid-oestrus, late oestrus and 1 day after oestrus, and in two queens only during late oestrus. The relations between the cervical patency to the contrast medium and the oestrous behaviour, cornification of the vaginal cells and the serum oestradiol-17, concentration were evaluated, and a relationship was found between the cervical patency and the degree of vaginal cornification. Transcervical transport of the radiopharmaceutical was observed in three queens during mid-oestrus. When the cervix was open, hysterography under a fluoroscope and hysteroscintigraphy were performed. The fluoroscopic and scintigraphic recordings revealed the patterns of the uterine contractions during oestrus in both ascending and descending directions, and the movement of the uterine contents back and forth between the uterine horns. The hysterograms were classified according to the shape of the uterine horns and the appearance of the endometrial lining. Spiral-shaped uterine horns with a smooth inner contour were observed in two queens, and a corkscrew appearance with irregular filling defects in the uterine lumen was shown in two queens that had developed subclinical cystic endometrial hyperplasia. These findings demonstrated that fluids or particles deposited in the cranial vagina of the cat can be transported into the uterus during some stages of the oestrous cycle. The fluoroscopic and scintigraphic techniques developed in this study may be further modified to permit more detailed studies of uterine contractile patterns and sperm transport in the feline female reproductive tract. Hysterography proved useful to diagnose uterine disease. The information on cervical patency is of value also for the development of techniques for artificial insemination in this species, and should be studied also in the ovulatory cycle. [source] Female Sexual Dysfunction in Urogenital Prolapse Surgery: Colposacropexy vs.THE JOURNAL OF SEXUAL MEDICINE, Issue 1 2008Hysterocolposacropexy ABSTRACT Introduction., Colposacropexy (CSP), with or without hysterectomy, is a valid technique for the repair of severe urogenital prolapse. For many years, uterine prolapse has represented an indication for hysterectomy, apart from the presence or absence of uterine disease and the patient's desires. Nevertheless, sparing the uterus is essential to women not only to have normal sexual functioning but to maintain physical and anatomical integrity as well. Aim., To assess sexual function in a group of patients who underwent CSP or hysterocolposacropexy (HSP). Materials and Methods., We enrolled 37 patients who underwent surgery for urogenital prolapse (15 HSP, mean age 53 years; 22 CSP, mean age 56 years). Based on a preliminary sexual history and sexual questionnaire, all patients were sexually active before surgery. At a mean follow-up of 39 months, we reassessed the patients using the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). Main Outcome Measure., We considered sexual activity with a score of 30 = good, 23,29 = intermediate, and <23 = poor. Results., In patients who underwent CSP and HSP, sexual activity was good in 13% and 26%, intermediate in 33% and 21%, and poor in 54% and 53%, respectively; considering also five patients who no longer had sexual activity postoperatively. Nevertheless, the statistical analysis, performed based on the data obtained from the FSFI questionnaire, showed that there were no significant differences between the two groups of points in terms of total score,CSP 21.1 (1.2,33.5) vs. HSP 22.8 (3.6,34.5),and single domains (desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, satisfaction, and pain) (P = not significant). Conclusions., Our data demonstrated no substantial differences regarding sexual activity in patients in which the uterus has been spared as opposed to those in whom it has been removed.
