Selected AbstractsApplying content management to automated provenance captureCONCURRENCY AND COMPUTATION: PRACTICE & EXPERIENCE, Issue 5 2008Karen L. Schuchardt Abstract Workflows and data pipelines are becoming increasingly valuable to computational and experimental sciences. These automated systems are capable of generating significantly more data within the same amount of time compared to their manual counterparts. Automatically capturing and recording data provenance and annotation as part of these workflows are critical for data management, verification, and dissemination. We have been prototyping a workflow provenance system, targeted at biological workflows, that extends our content management technologies and other open source tools. We applied this prototype to the provenance challenge to demonstrate an end-to-end system that supports dynamic provenance capture, persistent content management, and dynamic searches of both provenance and metadata. We describe our prototype, which extends the Kepler system for the execution environment, the Scientific Annotation Middleware (SAM) content management software for data services, and an existing HTTP-based query protocol. Our implementation offers several unique capabilities, and through the use of standards, is able to provide access to the provenance record with a variety of commonly available client tools. [source] Gender and Hurricane Mitch: reconstructing subjectivities after disasterDISASTERS, Issue 2 2007Julie Cupples Much of the gender and disaster literature calls for more gender-sensitive disaster relief and research by focusing on the ways in which women are more vulnerable in a disaster or on their unique capabilities as community leaders or natural resource managers, which are often overlooked or underutilised in emergency management strategies. As well as seeking to overcome the (strategic) essentialism that is part of these calls and debates, this paper pays closer attention to gender identity and subjectivity as these are constructed and reworked through the disaster process to highlight the complexities and contradictions associated with women's responses to a disaster. This focus, while crucial to gaining a deeper understanding of the gendered dimensions of disaster, also complicates attempts to create more gender-sensitive frameworks for disaster response. It draws on qualitative research conducted with a number of women in the wake of Hurricane Mitch (1998) in Nicaragua. [source] A survey on mobile satellite systemsINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKING, Issue 1 2010Paolo Chini Abstract Satellite systems represent a significant solution to provide communication services to mobile users in under-populated regions, in emergency areas, on planes, trains, and ships. In all these cases, satellite systems have unique capabilities in terms of robustness, wide area coverage, and broadcast/multicast capabilities. This paper surveys current mobile satellite networks and services from different standpoints, encompassing research issues, recent standardization advances (e.g. mobile extension for DVB-S2/-RCS, DVB-SH) and some operational systems (e.g. Globalstar, Inmarsat BGAN, Iridium, and Thuraya). The last part of this paper is devoted to qualitative and quantitative comparisons of the different mobile satellite systems to understand their characteristics in terms of services, capacity, resource utilization efficiency, and user mobility degree.Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Optimization of multicomponent photopolymer formulations using high-throughput analysis and kinetic modelingAICHE JOURNAL, Issue 5 2010Peter M. Johnson Abstract While high throughput and combinatorial techniques have played an instrumental role in materials development and implementation, numerous problems in materials science and engineering are too complex and necessitate a prohibitive number of experiments, even when considering high throughput and combinatorial approaches, for a comprehensive approach to materials design. Here, we propose a unique combination of high throughput experiments focused on binary formulations that, in combination with advanced modeling, has the potential to facilitate true materials design and optimization in ternary and more complex systems for which experiments are never required. Extensive research on the development of photopolymerizable monomer formulations has produced a vast array of potential monomer/comonomer, initiator and additive combinations. This array dramatically expands the range of material properties that are achievable; however, the vast number of potential formulations has eliminated any possibility of comprehensive materials design or optimization. This limitation is addressed by maximizing the benefits and unique capabilities of high throughput experimentation coupled with predictive models for material behavior and properties. The high throughput experimentation-model combination is useful to collect a limited amount of data from as few as 11 experiments on binary combinations of 10 analyzed monomers, and then use this limited data set to predict and optimize formulation properties in ternary resins that would have necessitated at least 1000 high throughput experiments and several orders of magnitude greater numbers of traditional experiments. A data analysis approach is demonstrated, and the model development and implementation for one model application in which a range of material properties are prescribed, and an optimal formulation that meets those properties is predicted and evaluated. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2010 [source] Chitosan Biotinylation and Electrodeposition for Selective Protein AssemblyMACROMOLECULAR BIOSCIENCE, Issue 5 2008Xiao-Wen Shi Abstract An alternative route to protein assembly at surfaces based on using the unique capabilities of biological materials for the spatially selective assembly of proteins is described. Specifically, the stimuli-responsive properties of aminopolysaccharide chitosan are combined with the molecular-recognition capabilities of biotin-streptavidin binding. Biotinylated chitosan retains its stimuli-responsive properties and is capable of electrodepositing at specific electrode addresses. Once deposited, it is capable of binding streptavidin, which can mediate the subsequent assembly of biotinylated proteins. Spatially selective protein assembly using biotinylated Protein A and fluorescently-labeled antibodies is demonstrated. [source] Laser-based in situ techniques: Novel methods for generating extreme conditions in TEM samples,MICROSCOPY RESEARCH AND TECHNIQUE, Issue 3 2009Mitra L. Taheri Abstract The dynamic transmission electron microscope (DTEM) is introduced as a novel tool for in situ processing of materials. Examples of various types of dynamic studies outline the advantages and differences of laser-based heating in the DTEM in comparison to conventional (resistive) heating in situ TEM methods. We demonstrate various unique capabilities of the drive laser, namely, in situ processing of nanoscale materials, rapid and high temperature phase transformations, and controlled thermal activation of materials. These experiments would otherwise be impossible without the use of the DTEM drive laser. Thus, the potential of the DTEM as a new technique to process and characterize the growth of a myriad of micro and nanostructures is demonstrated. Microsc. Res. Tech., 2009. [source] Blending telephony and IPTV: Building the TV-link service package using the Alcatel-Lucent Service BrokerÔBELL LABS TECHNICAL JOURNAL, Issue 1 2007Andre Beck This paper discusses the design and implementation of blended services, composite services whose base component services interact within a common control structure. The paper focuses on blended services that combine aspects of Internet Protocol television (IPTV) and IP Multimedia Subsystem, (IMS)-based telephony services and, in particular, focuses on a service that blends TV viewing and telephone call-handling functions. If a subscriber to this service receives a telephone call while watching TV, the caller ID is displayed on the subscriber's TV screen and the subscriber can signal call control instructions using the set-top box remote control. In this service blend, functions from each base service are coordinated with actions in the other. The mechanism allowing this service is an information channel that allows status and control information to move between the subscriber's set-top box and the IMS system. The services described in this paper are built upon a software foundation called the Alcatel-Lucent Service BrokerÔ platform, a platform that has unique capabilities to support such an information channel and to serve as the gateway between IMS and digital TV. This foundation offers service developers a set of important functions for the creation of blended services. Specifically, the Alcatel-Lucent Service Broker offers a means of controlling the invocation of base services, a means of communicating through different protocols, and support for large-scale deployment and for service customization. © 2007 Alcatel-Lucent. [source] Skin moisturization by hydrogenated polyisobutene,Quantitative and visual evaluationINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF COSMETIC SCIENCE, Issue 1 2010N. Dayan J. Cosmet. Sci., 60, 15,24 (January/February 2009) Synopsis Hydrogenated polyisobutene (HP) is used in topically applied cosmetic/personal care formulations as an emollient that leaves a pleasing skin feel when applied, and rubbed in after application. This effect, although distinguishable to the user, is difficult to define and quantify. Recognizing that some of the physical properties of HP such as film formation and wear resistance may contribute, in certain mechanisms, to skin moisturization, we designed a short-term pilot study to follow changes in skin moisturization. HP's incorporation into an o/w emulsion at 8% yielded increased viscosity and reduced emulsion droplet size as compared to the emollient ester CCT (capric/caprylic triglyceride) or a control formulation. Quantitative data indicate that application of the o/w emulsion formulation containing either HP or CCT significantly elevated skin moisture content and thus reduced transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by a maximal ,33% against the control formulation within 3 h and maintained this up to 6 h. Visual observation of skin treated with the HP-containing formulation showed fine texture and clear contrast as compared to the control or the CCT formulation, confirming this effect. As a result of increased hydration, skin conductivity, as measured in terms of corneometer values, was also elevated significantly by about tenfold as early as 20 min after HP or CCT application and was maintained throughout the test period. Throughout the test period the HP formulation was 5,10% more effective than the CCT formulation both in reduction of TEWL as well as in increased skin conductivity. Thus, compared to the emollient ester (CCT), HP showed a unique capability for long-lasting effect in retaining moisture and improving skin texture. Chan Abstract Raman and infrared (IR) spectroscopy are two complementary vibrational spectroscopic techniques that have experienced a tremendous growth in their use in biological and biomedical research. This is, in large part, due to their unique capability of providing label-free intrinsic chemical information of living biological samples at tissue, cellular, or sub-cellular resolutions. This article reviews recent developments in applying these techniques for the characterization of stem cells. A discussion of the potential for these methods to address some of the major challenges in stem cell research is presented, as well as the technological and scientific advancements that are needed to progress the knowledge in the field. PENG ABSTRACT Pervaporation (PV) is a membrane-separation process showing unique capability of separating target compound(s) from dilute systems. Experiments were performed on a bench-scale flat sheet PV unit with a model solution to evaluate separation factor of 6 constituent aroma compounds (1-hexanol, 1-heptanol, trans-2-hexenal, ethyl acetate, linalool, and d-limonene), representing some of typical flavoring ingredients from blueberry juice. The results showed that separation factor was in the range of 70 to 430, depending on molecule size and polarity property of the compounds. Except for 1-heptanol, all compounds showed no significant coupling effect in the mixture system. The effect of temperature was also examined for a given feed-flow rate. Ellis X-ray-induced redox changes can lead to incorrect assignments of the functional states of metals in metalloprotein crystals. The need for on-line monitoring of the status of metal ions (and other chromophores) during protein crystallography experiments is of growing importance with the use of intense synchrotron X-ray beams. Significant efforts are therefore being made worldwide to combine different spectroscopies in parallel with X-ray crystallographic data collection. Here the implementation and utilization of optical and X-ray absorption spectroscopies on the modern macromolecular crystallography (MX) beamline 10, at the SRS, Daresbury Laboratory, is described. This beamline is equipped with a dedicated monolithic energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence detector, allowing X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements to be made in situ on the same crystal used to record the diffraction data. In addition, an optical microspectrophotometer has been incorporated on the beamline, thus facilitating combined MX, XAS and optical spectroscopic measurements. By uniting these techniques it is also possible to monitor the status of optically active and optically silent metal centres present in a crystal at the same time. This unique capability has been applied to observe the results of crystallographic data collection on crystals of nitrite reductase from Alcaligenes xylosoxidans, which contains both type-1 and type-2 Cu centres. It is found that the type-1 Cu centre photoreduces quickly, resulting in the loss of the 595,nm peak in the optical spectrum, while the type-2 Cu centre remains in the oxidized state over a much longer time period, for which independent confirmation is provided by XAS data as this centre has an optical spectrum which is barely detectable using microspectrophotometry. This example clearly demonstrates the importance of using two on-line methods, spectroscopy and XAS, for identifying well defined redox states of metalloproteins during crystallographic data collection. [source] X-ray emission spectroscopy with a laser-heated diamond anvil cell: a new experimental probe of the spin state of iron in the Earth's interiorJOURNAL OF SYNCHROTRON RADIATION, Issue 5 2005Jung-Fu Lin Synchrotron-based X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) is well suited to probing the local electronic structure of 3d transition metals such as Fe and Mn in their host phases. The laser-heated diamond anvil cell technique is uniquely capable of generating ultra-high static pressures and temperatures in excess of 100,GPa and 3000,K. Here X-ray emission spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction have been interfaced with the laser-heated diamond cell for studying the electronic spin states of iron in magnesiowüstite-(Mg0.75,Fe0.25)O and its crystal structure under lower-mantle conditions. X-ray emission spectra of the ferrous iron in a single crystal of magnesiowüstite-(Mg0.75,Fe0.25)O indicate that a high-spin to low-spin transition of ferrous iron occurs at 54 to 67,GPa and 300,K and the ferrous iron remains in the high-spin state up to 47,GPa and 1300,K. This pilot study points to the unique capability of the synchrotron-based XES and X-ray diffraction techniques for addressing the issue of electronic spin transition or crossover in 3d transition metals and compounds under extreme high- P,T conditions. [source] Gemini near-infrared integral field spectroscopy of the narrow-line region of ESO 428,G14: kinematics, excitation and the role of the radio jetMONTHLY NOTICES OF THE ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY, Issue 1 2006Rogemar A. Riffel ABSTRACT We present two-dimensional (2D) gas kinematics and excitation of the inner 300 pc of the Seyfert galaxy ESO 428,G14 at a sampling of 14 pc2, from near-infrared spectroscopic observations at R, 6000 obtained with the Integral Field Unit (IFU) of the Gemini Near-Infrared Spectrograph. From measurements of fluxes and profiles of the emission lines [Fe ii],1.257 ,m, Pa,, H2, 2.121 ,m and Br,, we construct 2D maps of line intensities and ratios, radial velocities and velocity dispersions. Emission line ,tomography' is provided by velocity slices obtained across the line profiles, a unique capability of IFUs, which allows the mapping of not only the peak velocities but including also the wings. We compare these maps with a previously published high spatial resolution radio map and find a tight relation between the radio structure and the emission-line flux distributions and kinematics, revealing that the radio jet plays a fundamental role not only in shaping the narrow-line region but also in the imprint of its kinematics. Blueshifts of up to 400 km s,1 and velocity dispersions of up to 150 km s,1 are observed in association with the radio jet at a position angle (PA) = 129°, which is also the PA of the photometric major axis of the galaxy. We conclude that the radio jet is launched at a small angle relative to the galactic plane, with the north-western side slightly oriented towards us. This angle is small enough for the radio jet to shock and compress the gas in the plane of the galaxy, and for the nuclear continuum to ionize and heat it. The distinct kinematics and flux distributions observed for the different emission lines suggest different origins for their emission. The [Fe ii] shows the largest blueshifts and velocity dispersions and its flux distribution is concentrated along the jet, while the H2 shows the lowest velocity dispersions and has additional flux contribution from regions beyond the jet. Both X-rays emitted by the active galactic nucleus and shocks produced by the radio jet can excite the H2 and [Fe ii] emission lines. We use the 2D velocity dispersion maps to estimate upper limits to the contribution of the radio jet to the excitation of [Fe ii] and H2 which may reach 90 per cent for [Fe ii] and 80 per cent for H2 in the jet region. The [Fe ii]/Pa, emission-line ratios and the association of the [Fe ii] flux distribution and kinematics with the radio structure support a stronger contribution of the radio jet to the [Fe ii] excitation than that of H2. In the regions beyond the jet, the observations favour X-ray excitation. The edible fungus Pleurotus sapidus was selected as a model organism for the analysis of the secretome by means of 2-DE. For enzyme production, the fungus was grown in submerged cultures either on peanut shells or on glass wool as a carrier material. Identification of the secreted enzymes was performed by tryptic digestion, ESI-MS/MS ab initio sequencing, and homology searches against public databases. The spectrum of secreted enzymes comprised various types of hydrolases and lignolytic enzymes of the manganese peroxidase/versatile peroxidase family. While peptidases were secreted mainly by the cultures grown on peanut shells, versatile peroxidase type enzymes dominated in the cultures grown on glass wool. [source] |
