The seismic anomaly beneath Iceland extends down to the mantle transition zone and no deeper

A 3-D teleseismic tomography image of the upper mantle beneath Iceland of unprecedented resolution reveals a subvertical low wave speed anomaly that is cylindrical in the upper 250 km but tabular below this. Such a morphological transition is expected towards the bottom of a buoyant upwelling. Our observations thus suggest that magmatism at the Iceland hotspot is fed by flow rising from the mantle transition zone. This result contributes to the ongoing debate about whether the upper and lower mantles convect separately or as one. The image also suggests that material flows outwards from Iceland along the Reykjanes Ridge in the upper 200 km, but is blocked in the upper 150 km beneath the Tjornes Fracture Zone. This provides direct observational support for the theory that fracture zones dam lateral flow along ridges. [source]


High resolution analysis of non-small cell lung cancer cell lines by whole genome tiling path array CGH

Abstract Chromosomal regions harboring tumor suppressors and oncogenes are often deleted or amplified. Array comparative genomic hybridization detects segmental DNA copy number alterations in tumor DNA relative to a normal control. The recent development of a bacterial artificial chromosome array, which spans the human genome in a tiling path manner with >32,000 clones, has facilitated whole genome profiling at an unprecedented resolution. Using this technology, we comprehensively describe and compare the genomes of 28 commonly used non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) cell models, derived from 18 adenocarcinomas (AC), 9 squamous cell carcinomas and 1 large cell carcinoma. Analysis at such resolution not only provided a detailed genomic alteration template for each of these model cell lines, but revealed novel regions of frequent duplication and deletion. Significantly, a detailed analysis of chromosome 7 identified 6 distinct regions of alterations across this chromosome, implicating the presence of multiple novel oncogene loci on this chromosome. As well, a comparison between the squamous and AC cells revealed alterations common to both subtypes, such as the loss of 3p and gain of 5p, in addition to multiple hotspots more frequently associated with only 1 subtype. Interestingly, chromosome 3q, which is known to be amplified in both subtypes, showed 2 distinct regions of alteration, 1 frequently altered in squamous and 1 more frequently altered in AC. In summary, our data demonstrate the unique information generated by high resolution analysis of NSCLC genomes and uncover the presence of genetic alterations prevalent in the different NSCLC subtypes. © 2005 Wiley-Liss, Inc. Sample preparation procedures for biological atomic force microscopy

Summary Since the late 1980s, atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been increasingly used in biological sciences and it is now established as a versatile tool to address the structure, properties and functions of biological specimens. AFM is unique in that it provides three-dimensional images of biological structures, including biomolecules, lipid films, 2D protein crystals and cells, under physiological conditions and with unprecedented resolution. A crucial prerequisite for successful, reliable biological AFM is that the samples need to be well attached to a solid substrate using appropriate, nondestructive methods. In this review, we discuss common techniques for immobilizing biological specimens for AFM studies. [source]


Efficient, large-scale archaeological prospection using a true three-dimensional ground-penetrating Radar Array system

Abstract The Swedish UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site of the Birka and Hovgården Iron Age settlements is well suited for the testing of high-resolution archaeological prospection methods. In May 2006 ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and magnetometer test measurements were conducted at Birka, resulting in data of outstanding quality and new archaeological discoveries, but also demonstrating the need for increased spatial sampling regarding GPR prospection at complex Scandinavian sites. Therefore Birka was selected as a testing ground for a pilot study investigating the suitability of the novel multichannel GPR array system MIRA (MALÅ Imaging Radar Array) for efficient, large-scale GPR surveys with very dense spatial sampling. The study was conducted in May 2008 by MALÅ Geoscience AB in collaboration with the archaeological prospection unit of the Swedish National Heritage Board. The very high-resolution three-dimensional GPR pilot survey demonstrated that it is possible to survey 1,ha and more per day with 8,cm cross-line spacing, mapping archaeological structures in unprecedented resolution, such as postholes of only 25,cm diameter. Non-LTE model atmospheres for supersoft X-ray sources

Abstract In the last decade, X-ray observations of hot stellar objects became available with unprecedented resolution and S/N ratio. For an adequate interpretation, fully metal-line blanketed Non-LTE model-atmospheres are necessary. The Tübingen Non-LTE Model Atmosphere Package (TMAP) can calculate such model atmospheres at a high level of sophistication. Although TMAP is not especially designed for the calculation of spectral energy distributions (SEDs) at extreme photospheric parameters, it can be employed for the spectral analysis ofburst spectra of novae like V4743 Sgr or line identifications in observations of neutron stars with low magnetic fields in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) like EXO 0748-676 (© 2010 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
