Selected AbstractsApplying Treatment Outcome Research in Clinical Practice: Techniques for Adapting Interventions to the Real WorldCHILD AND ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH, Issue 1 2003Jennifer K. Connor-Smith Despite the growing literature on empirically supported therapies, these interventions are rarely used in clinical settings. Although researchers lament the poor transfer of techniques from controlled trials to clinics, little has been written to guide the adaptation of manualised treatments for real-life clinical practice. The goal of this paper is to provide suggestions for the clinical use of research-tested treatments, with specific examples from the treatment of child depressive disorders. Strategies for applying manuals flexibly, adapting treatments to address comorbidity, attending to individual differences, and overcoming training obstacles are highlighted. Korn This article reviews the complexity of adaptation and symptomatology in adult survivors of childhood neglect and abuse who meet criteria for the proposed diagnosis of Complex Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (Complex PTSD), also known as Disorders of Extreme Stress, Not Otherwise Specified (DESNOS). A specific EMDR protocol, Resource Development and Installation (RDI), is proposed as an effective intervention in the initial stabilization phase of treatment with Complex PTSD/DESNOS. Descriptive psychometric and behavioral outcome measures from two single case studies are presented which appear to support the use of RDI. Suggestions are offered for future treatment outcome research with this challenging population. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Clin Psychol 58: 1465,1487, 2002. Dobson Perepletchikova and Kazdin discuss the issue of establishing treatment integrity in the context of treatment outcome research. They offer important insights into the potential explanations for the conflicting results and suggest directions for future assessment and research designs. This commentary, in the context of Perepletchikova and Kazdin's paper, discusses (a) issues related to the definition and assessment of treatment integrity and its components and (b) the scientific, practical, and clinical applications of assessing treatment integrity.
