Being Smaller (being + smaller)
Selected AbstractsMetropolitan Open-Space Protection with Uncertain Site AvailabilityCONSERVATION BIOLOGY, Issue 2 2005ROBERT G. HAIGHT acceso público; Chicago; modelo de selección de sitio; optimización; representación de especies Abstract:,Urban planners acquire open space to protect natural areas and provide public access to recreation opportunities. Because of limited budgets and dynamic land markets, acquisitions take place sequentially depending on available funds and sites. To address these planning features, we formulated a two-period site selection model with two objectives: maximize the expected number of species represented in protected sites and maximize the expected number of people with access to protected sites. These objectives were both maximized subject to an upper bound on area protected over two periods. The trade-off between species representation and public access was generated by the weighting method of multiobjective programming. Uncertainty was represented with a set of probabilistic scenarios of site availability in a linear-integer formulation. We used data for 27 rare species in 31 candidate sites in western Lake County, near the city of Chicago, to illustrate the model. Each trade-off curve had a concave shape in which species representation dropped at an increasing rate as public accessibility increased, with the trade-off being smaller at higher levels of the area budget. Several sites were included in optimal solutions regardless of objective function weights, and these core sites had high species richness and public access per unit area. The area protected in period one depended on current site availability and on the probabilities of sites being undeveloped and available in the second period. Although the numerical results are specific for our study, the methodology is general and applicable elsewhere. [source] Friction and wear properties of NBR/PVC compositesJOURNAL OF APPLIED POLYMER SCIENCE, Issue 4 2007Xinwu Huang Abstract Acrylonitrial butadiene rubber (NBR)/Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) composites with different PVC content were prepared. The effect of PVC content on the mechanical strength and tribological properties of the NBR/PVC composites was investigated. The morphologies of the worn traces and debris of NBR/PVC composites and worn traces of mating ball were observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). It was found that the friction and wear of NBR/PVC was lower than that of NBR without PVC. The NBR/PVC composite with 30% PVC content showed the best synthetic mechanical and tribological properties. The inferior elastic properties and the lesser deformation under the applied load of composites with PVC resulted in hysteric force and adhesion force decrease, which leading to a lower friction and wear of NBR/PVC composites. The frictional failure unit of NBR70/PVC30 composite being smaller should be an important reason of the wear of the composite being lowest. The lubricating effect of PVC played an important role in decreasing the friction coefficient and wear of NBR/PVC composites. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This condition is associated with visual deficits ranging from no light perception in severe cases to vision within normal ranges in mild cases of ONH. In mild cases, deficits can be limited to sectoral anomalies in the visual field and normal vision with colour vision anomalies have been reported. We report here a case of mild ONH with visual symptoms relating to Pulfrich phenomenon (PP) occurring spontaneously. Methods:, A 12 year girl presented with typical visual symptoms (bumping into objects when walking, poor object location at tennis) associated with the spontaneous PP. A simple pendulum revealed a perceived anticlockwise ellipse indicative of a left eye defect. This was neutralised by an 85% transmission filter placed before the right eye. The inter-ocular latency difference was calculated to be 0.88 (S.D., 0.55) ms. Results:, Fundus biometry showed an asymmetry in optic nerve size, the left being smaller than the right. Visual fields, anomaloscope and other colour vision tests, and both flash and pattern-reversal stimuli Visually Evoked Potentials showed no difference in visual function between the right and left eyes. Conclusions:, A case of very mild ONH gives inter-ocular normal vision and visual function and yet a subtle inter-ocular delay occurs resulting in visual symptoms associated with PP. These were completely removed with tinted spectacles. [source] Relative risk aversion, relative prudence and comparative statics under uncertainty: The case of (,, ,)-preferencesBULLETIN OF ECONOMIC RESEARCH, Issue 2 2004Thomas Eichner D81; D21 Abstract From the expected-utility approach, relative risk aversion being smaller than one and relative prudence being smaller than two emerge as preference restrictions that fully determine the optimal responses of decisions under uncertainty to certain shifts in probability distributions. We characterize the magnitudes of relative risk aversion and relative prudence in terms of the two-parameter, mean-standard deviation approach. We demonstrate that this characterization is instrumental in obtaining comparative static results in the two-parameter setting. We further relate our findings to the results in the expected-utility framework. Dvorkin Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to determine whether open-magnet magnetic resonance (MR) defaecography could provide more useful clinical information than evacuation proctography (EP) alone in the evaluation of a cohort of patients with full-thickness rectal intussusception and could assist in decisions concerning management. Methods Ten patients (4 male; median age 43, range 30,65) with symptomatic circumferential rectal intussusception diagnosed on EP, underwent open-magnet MR defaecography. Pathologies visible with each technique were recorded and 12 parameters of anorectal configuration and morphology measured and compared. Results There was discordance in the diagnosis of rectal intussusception in three cases. In another two patients, MR defaecography demonstrated mucosal descent only. Measurements of anorectal configuration and morphology were similar between techniques; only rectal size and lateral dimensions of the rectocoele were significantly different, being smaller on MR defaecography than EP. Two patients were shown on MR defaecography to have significant bladder descent and two female patients had significant vaginal descent. Conclusion EP remains the first line investigation for the diagnosis of rectal intussusception, but may not distinguish mucosal from full-thickness descent. MR defaecography further complements EP by giving information on movements of the whole pelvic floor, 30% of the patients studied having associated abnormal anterior and/or middle pelvic organ descent. If surgery is planned for patients with rectal intussusception, MR defaecography provides useful information regarding the presence and degree of anterior pelvic compartment descent that may need to be addressed if a good functional outcome is to be achieved.
