Selected Abstracts"I Am Not Alone": The Feasibility and Acceptability of Interactive Voice Response-Facilitated Telephone Peer Support Among Older Adults With Heart FailureCONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE, Issue 3 2007Michele Heisler MD Patient self-management is a critical determinant of heart failure (HF) outcomes, yet patients with HF are often frail and socially isolated, factors that may limit their ability to manage self-care and access clinic-based services. Mobilizing peer support among HF patients is a promising strategy to improve self-management support. In this pilot, the authors evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of an interactive voice response (IVR)-based platform to facilitate telephone peer support among older adults with HF. Participants completed a baseline survey, were offered a 3-hour training session in peer communication skills, and were paired with another patient who had HF. Participants were asked to contact their partner weekly using a toll-free IVR phone system that protected their anonymity and provided automated reminders if contacts were not made. Times and duration of participants' telephone contacts were monitored and recorded. After the 7-week intervention, participants completed surveys and brief face-to-face interviews. The authors found high levels of use and satisfaction and improvements in depressive symptoms among the 20 pilot study participants. An IVR peer-support intervention is feasible, is acceptable to patients, and may have positive effects on patients' HF social support and health outcomes, in conjunction with structured health system support, that warrant more rigorous evaluation in a randomized trial. [source] Rapid acquisition of operant conditioning in 5-day-old rat pups: A new technique articulating suckling-related motor activity and milk reinforcementDEVELOPMENTAL PSYCHOBIOLOGY, Issue 6 2007Carlos Arias Abstract Newborn rats are capable of obtaining milk by attaching to a surrogate nipple. During this procedure pups show a gradual increase in head and forelimb movements oriented towards the artificial device that are similar to those observed during nipple attachment. In the present study the probability of execution of these behaviors was analyzed as a function of their contingency with intraoral milk infusion using brief training procedures (15 min). Five-day-old pups were positioned in a smooth surface having access to a touch-sensitive sensor. Physical contact with the sensor activated an infusion pump which served to deliver intraoral milk reinforcement (Paired group). Yoked controls received the reinforcer when Paired neonates touched the sensor. Paired pups trained under a continuous reinforcement schedule emitted significantly more responses than Yoked controls following two (Experiment 1) or one training session (Experiment 2). These differences were also observed during an extinction session conducted immediately after training. The level of maternal deprivation before training (3 or 6 hr) or the volume of milk delivered (1.0 or 1.5 µl per pulse) did not affect acquisition or extinction performances. In addition, it was observed that the rate of responding of Paired pups during the early phase of the extinction session significantly predicted subsequent levels of acceptance of the reinforcer. These results indicate that the frequency of suckling-related behaviors can be rapidly modified by means of associative operant processes. [source] The Quality of Local District Assessments Used in Nebraska's School-Based Teacher-Led Assessment and Reporting System (STARS)EDUCATIONAL MEASUREMENT: ISSUES AND PRACTICE, Issue 2 2005Susan M. Brookhart A sample of 293 local district assessments used in the Nebraska STARS (School-based Teacher-led Assessment and Reporting System), 147 from 2004 district mathematics assessment portfolios and 146 from 2003 reading assessment portfolios, was scored with a rubric evaluating their quality. Scorers were Nebraska educators with background and training in assessment. Raters reached an agreement criterion during a training session; however, analysis of a set of 30 assessments double-scored during the main scoring session indicated that the math ratings remained reliable during scoring, while the reading ratings did not. Therefore, this article presents results for the 147 mathematics assessments only. The quality of local mathematics assessments used in the Nebraska STARS was good overall. The majority were of high quality on characteristics that go to validity (alignment with standards, clarity to students, appropriateness of content). Professional development for Nebraska teachers is recommended on aspects of assessment related to reliability (sufficiency of information and scoring procedures). [source] Empirical tests of the functional significance of amygdala-based modulation of hippocampal representations: evidence for multiple memory consolidation pathwaysEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF NEUROSCIENCE, Issue 5 2007Robert J. McDonald Abstract This series of experiments evaluated the effects of amygdala damage on the acquisition and long-term retention of variants of the water task, and tested the hypothesis that the amygdala is an essential neural system for consolidation of hippocampal memories. In Experiment 1, rats with large, neurotoxic lesions of the amygdala (AMYG) showed normal acquisition on the standard spatial version of the water task, as well as normal retention and decay rate profiles on the 24-h and 30-day retention probes. In Experiment 2, AMYG rats showed normal one-trial place learning abilities and could retain this one-trial information over a 24 h delay. Experiment 3 showed that the amygdala lesions used in this study were functionally significant because AMYG rats, from Experiment 2, showed impairments in a discriminative fear conditioning to context paradigm. Experiment 4 was a critical test of the idea that the amygdala is a decisive locus for consolidation of hippocampal memories. AMYG rats were trained to sub-asymptotic levels of performance on the standard version of the water task. Following each training session, the subjects were given a post-training peripheral injection of d -amphetamine. A probe test revealed that normal subjects and AMYG rats showed similar post-training memory improvement effects. Taken together, the results show that hippocampal memory consolidation processes do not require amygdala modulation. Arguments for an alternative view are presented suggesting that there are multiple memory consolidation pathways, one of which may depend on amygdala neural circuitry. [source] Blockade of NMDA receptors in the dorsomedial striatum prevents action,outcome learning in instrumental conditioningEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF NEUROSCIENCE, Issue 2 2005Henry H. Yin Abstract Although there is consensus that instrumental conditioning depends on the encoding of action,outcome associations, it is not known where this learning process is localized in the brain. Recent research suggests that the posterior dorsomedial striatum (pDMS) may be the critical locus of these associations. We tested this hypothesis by examining the contribution of N -methyl- d -aspartate receptors (NMDARs) in the pDMS to action,outcome learning. Rats with bilateral cannulae in the pDMS were first trained to perform two actions (left and right lever presses), for sucrose solution. After the pre-training phase, they were given an infusion of the NMDA antagonist 2-amino-5-phosphonopentanoic acid (APV, 1 mg/mL) or artificial cerebral spinal fluid (ACSF) before a 30-min session in which pressing one lever delivered food pellets and pressing the other delivered fruit punch. Learning during this session was tested the next day by sating the animals on either the pellets or fruit punch before assessing their performance on the two levers in extinction. The ACSF group selectively reduced responding on the lever that, in training, had earned the now devalued outcome, whereas the APV group did not. Experiment 2 replicated the effect of APV during the critical training session but found no effect of APV given after acquisition and before test. Furthermore, Experiment 3 showed that the effect of APV on instrumental learning was restricted to the pDMS; infusion into the dorsolateral striatum did not prevent learning. These experiments provide the first direct evidence that, in instrumental conditioning, NMDARs in the dorsomedial striatum are involved in encoding action,outcome associations. [source] Long-lasting hippocampal potentiation and contextual memory consolidationEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF NEUROSCIENCE, Issue 12 2001Benedetto Sacchetti Abstract In order to ascertain whether there are hippocampal electrophysiological modifications specifically related to memory, exploratory activity and emotional stress, extracellular electrical activity was recorded in hippocampal slices prepared from the brains of male adult rats. Several groups of animals were employed: (i) rats which had freely explored the experimental apparatus (8 min exposure); (ii) rats which had been subjected, in the same apparatus, to a fear conditioning paradigm training entailing the administration of aversive electrical footshocks (8 min exposure); (iii) rats to which the same number of aversive shocks had been administered in the same apparatus, but temporally compressed so as to make difficult the association between painful stimuli and the apparatus (30 s exposure); (iv) naïve rats never placed in the apparatus. Half of the rats from each treatment group were used for retrieval testing and the other half for hippocampal excitability testing. The conditioned freezing response was exhibited for no less than 4 weeks. Hippocampal excitability was measured by means of input,output curves (IOC) and paired-pulse facilitation curves (PPF). Retrieval testing or brain slices preparation were performed at increasing delays after the training sessions: immediately afterwards or after 1, 7 or 28 days. Only the rats subjected to the fear conditioning training exhibited freezing when placed again in the apparatus (retrieval testing). It was found that IOCs, with respect to naïve rats, increased in the conditioned animals up to the 7-day delay. In free exploration animals the IOCs increased only immediately after the training session. In all other rats no modification of the curves was observed. IOC increases do not appear to imply presynaptic transmitter release modifications, because they were not accompanied by PPF modifications. In conclusion, a clear-cut correlation was found between the increase in excitability of the Schaffer collateral,CA1 dendrite synapses and freezing response consolidation. [source] Classical reward conditioning in Drosophila melanogasterGENES, BRAIN AND BEHAVIOR, Issue 2 2007Y-C. Kim Negatively reinforced olfactory conditioning has been widely employed to identify learning and memory genes, signal transduction pathways and neural circuitry in Drosophila. To delineate the molecular and cellular processes underlying reward-mediated learning and memory, we developed a novel assay system for positively reinforced olfactory conditioning. In this assay, flies were involuntarily exposed to the appetitive unconditioned stimulus sucrose along with a conditioned stimulus odour during training and their preference for the odour previously associated with sucrose was measured to assess learning and memory capacities. After one training session, wild-type Canton S flies displayed reliable performance, which was enhanced after two training cycles with 1-min or 15-min inter-training intervals. Higher performance scores were also obtained with increasing sucrose concentration. Memory in Canton S flies decayed slowly when measured at 30 min, 1 h and 3 h after training; whereas, it had declined significantly at 6 h and 12 h post-training. When learning mutant t,,h flies, which are deficient in octopamine, were challenged, they exhibited poor performance, validating the utility of this assay. As the Drosophila model offers vast genetic and transgenic resources, the new appetitive conditioning described here provides a useful tool with which to elucidate the molecular and cellular underpinnings of reward learning and memory. Similar to negatively reinforced conditioning, this reward conditioning represents classical olfactory conditioning. Thus, comparative analyses of learning and memory mutants in two assays may help identify the molecular and cellular components that are specific to the unconditioned stimulus information used in conditioning. [source] From learning to forgetting: Behavioral, circuitry, and molecular properties define the different functional states of the recognition memory traceHIPPOCAMPUS, Issue 5 2010Rocío Romero-Granados Abstract Neuropsychological analyses of amnesic patients, as well as lesion experiments, indicate that the temporal lobe is essential for the encoding, storage, and expression of object recognition memory (ORM). However, temporal lobe structures directly involved in the consolidation and reconsolidation of these memories are not yet well-defined. We report here that systemic administration of a protein synthesis inhibitor before or up to 4 h after training or reactivation sessions impairs consolidation and reconsolidation of ORM, without affecting short-term memory. We have also observed that ORM reconsolidation is sensitive to protein synthesis inhibition, independently of the ORM trace age. Using bdnf and egr-1 gene expression analysis, we defined temporal lobe areas related to consolidation and reconsolidation of ORM. Training and reactivation 21 days after ORM acquisition sessions provoked changes in bdnf mRNA in somatosensory, perirhinal, and hippocampal cortices. Reactivation 2 days after the training session elicited changes in bdnf and egr-1 mRNA in entorhinal and prefrontal cortices, while reactivation 9 days post-training provoked an increase in egr-1 transcription in somatosensory and entorhinal cortices. The differences in activated circuits and in the capacity to recall the memory trace after 9 or 21 days post-training suggest that memory trace suffers functional changes in this period of time. All these results indicate that the functional state of the recognition memory trace, from acquisition to forgetting, can be specifically defined by behavioral, circuitry, and molecular properties. © 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc. [source] Effects of pre or posttraining dorsal hippocampus D-AP5 injection on fear conditioning to tone, background, and foreground contextHIPPOCAMPUS, Issue 11 2008Eduardo Ekman Schenberg Abstract NMDA receptor antagonist D-AP5 was injected into the dorsal hippocampus of Wistar rats before or immediately after the training session in fear conditioning. Training was conducted both with signaled (background context) or unsignaled (foreground context) footshocks. Contextual fear conditioning was assessed 24 h later and tone fear conditioning 48 h after training (only in the signaled footshock condition). Pretraining injections impaired conditioned fear to contextual features, both in background and foreground configurations, whereas tone fear conditioning was left intact. Posttraining injections were ineffective in all cases. We conclude that dorsal hippocampal NMDA receptors are required for contextual fear acquisition independently of context saliency and that they are not required to early consolidation processes. © 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc. [source] Detection of novelty, but not memory of spatial habituation, is associated with an increase in phosphorylated cAMP response element-binding protein levels in the hippocampusHIPPOCAMPUS, Issue 1 2004Milena Winograd Abstract There is a growing body of evidence showing that the formation of associative memories is associated with an increase in phosphorylated cAMP response element-binding protein (pCREB) levels. We recently reported increased pCREB levels in the rat hippocampus after an exploration to a novel environment. In the present work, we studied whether this increment in CREB activation is associated with the formation of memory of habituation to a novel environment or with the detection of novelty. Rats were submitted to consecutive open field sessions at 3-h intervals. Measurement of the hippocampal pCREB level, carried out 1 h after each training session, showed that (1) it did not increase when rats explored a familiar environment; (2) it did not increase after a reexposure that improves the memory of habituation; (3) it increased after a brief novel exploration unable to form memory of habituation; and (4) it increased in amnesic rats for spatial habituation. Taken as a whole, our results suggest that the elevated pCREB level after a single open field exploration is not associated with the memory formation of habituation. [source] Inter-rater reliability of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale and the Groningen Social Disabilities Schedule in a European multi-site randomized controlled trial on the effectiveness of acute psychiatric day hospitalsINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF METHODS IN PSYCHIATRIC RESEARCH, Issue 4 2003Dr Matthias Schützwohl Abstract The objectives of this study were to report the inter-rater reliability of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS 4.0) and the Groningen Social Disabilities Schedule (GSDS-II) as assessed in a randomized controlled trial on the effectiveness of psychiatric day hospitals spanning five sites in countries of Central and Western Europe. Following brief training sessions, videotaped BPRS-interviews and written GSDS-vignettes were rated by clinically experienced researchers from all participating sites. Inter-rater reliability often proved to be poor for items assessing the severity of both psychopathology and social dysfunction, but findings suggest that both instruments allow for the assessment of the presence or absence of specific psychopathological symptoms or social disabilities. Inter-rater reliability at subscale level proved to be good for both instruments. Results indicate that, with a brief training session and proper use of the instruments, psychopathology and social disabilities can be reliably assessed within cross-national research studies. The results are of particular interest given that the need to conduct cross-national multi-site studies including countries with different cultural backgrounds increases. Roark summary, To test the hypothesis that a flat plane interocclusal appliance affects the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the temporalis and masseter muscles in pain-free individuals, maxillary splints were fabricated for 20 individuals who reported no history, signs or symptoms of myofascial pain or arthralgia as determined by two trained, independent examiners. Subjects were instructed to establish light tooth contact, maximum clenching, and moderate clenching with/without the splint in place (as determined by random assignment) while EMG data from the left and right temporalis and masseter muscles were recorded. A 5-min biofeedback training session to relax the masticatory muscles was followed by a repetition of the tooth contact/clenching tasks with/without the splint in place. With the splint in place, the activity of the temporalis muscles decreased for all tasks, significantly for the left and right temporalis under maximal clenching and for the right temporalis under moderate clenching. In contrast, the activity of the masseter muscles increased under light and moderate clenching (significantly for the left masseter under moderate clenching) and decreased slightly under maximal clenching. The effectiveness of interocclusal appliances may be due to mechanisms other than redistribution of adverse loading. [source] DATA ANALYTICAL METHODOLOGIES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF A VOCABULARY FOR EVALUATION OF MEAT QUALITYJOURNAL OF SENSORY STUDIES, Issue 6 2002M.G. O'SULLIVAN ABSTRACT Pork patties from M. longissimus dorsi and M. psoas major were used by a sensory panel to develop a descriptive vocabulary to describe warmed-over flavor development. The patties were made from meat from animals supplemented with one of four dietary treatments, (I) control diet, (II) supplemental iron (7 g iron (II) sulfate/kg feed), (III) supplemental vitamin E (200 mg dl-,-tocopherol acetate/kg of feed) and (IV) supplemental vitamin E + supplemental iron. The sample set used for training reflected the variation in muscle type and degree of warmed-over flavor development (day 1 and 5). The sensory terms selected had to be relevant to the samples, discriminate between the samples, have cognitive clarity and be nonredundant. Based on these selection criteria an initial training list of 36 sensory terms consisting of odors, flavors, basic tastes and aftertastes was developed in a pretrial using experts with product knowledge. This list constituted the start of training the panel. Principle Component Analysis (PCA) and assessor suggestions were used for reducing the number of terms and after 5 days of training this list was reduced to 21 sensory terms. The discriminative ability of the sensory panel improved over the course of sensory training and was quantified by using the mean assessor signal to noise ratios (S/N) for the sensory terms for each training session. This signal to noise ratio is essentially the total initial variance divided by the residual cross-validated variance. Subsequent detailed multivariate analysis found that the bilinear descriptor leverage was a particularly efficient method for term reduction. [source] The quality of a simulation examination using a high-fidelity child manikinMEDICAL EDUCATION, Issue 2003T-C Tsai Purpose, Developing quality examinations that measure physicians' clinical performance in simulations is difficult. The goal of this study was to develop a quality simulation examination using a high-fidelity child manikin in evaluating paediatric residents' competence about managing critical cases in a simulated emergency room. Quality was determined by evidence of the reliability, validity and feasibility of the examination. In addition, the participants' responses regarding its realism, effectiveness and value are presented. Method, Scenario scripts and rating instruments were carefully developed in this study. Experts were used to validate the case scenarios and provide evidence of construct validity. Eighteen paediatric residents, ,working' as pairs, participated in a manikin-based simulation pre-test, a training session and a post-test. Three independent raters rated the participants' performance on task-specific technical skills, medications used and behaviours displayed. At the end of the simulation, the participants completed an evaluation questionnaire. Results, The manikin-based simulation examination was found to be a realistic, valid and reliable tool. Validity (i.e. face, content and construct) of the test instrument was evident. The level of inter-rater concordance of participants' clinical performance was good to excellent. The item analysis showed good to excellent internal consistency on all the performance scores except the post-test technical score. Conclusions, With a carefully designed rating instrument and simulation operation, the manikin-based simulation examination was shown to be reliable and valid. However, a further refinement of the test instrument will be required for higher stake examinations. [source] Comparing the Psychometric Properties of the Checklist of Nonverbal Pain Behaviors (CNPI) and the Pain Assessment in Advanced Dementia (PAIN-AD) InstrumentsPAIN MEDICINE, Issue 3 2010FAAN, Mary Ersek PhD Abstract Objective., To examine and compare the psychometric properties of two common observational pain assessment tools used in persons with dementia. Design., In a cross-sectional descriptive study nursing home (NH) residents were videotaped at rest and during a structured movement procedure. Following one training session and one practice session, two trained graduate nursing research assistants independently scored the tapes using the two pain observation tools. Setting., Fourteen NHs in Western Washington State participating in a randomized controlled trial of an intervention to enhance pain assessment and management. Participants., Sixty participants with moderate to severe pain were identified by nursing staff or chosen based on the pain items from the most recent Minimum Data Set assessment. Measures., Checklist of Nonverbal Pain Indicators (CNPI) and the Pain Assessment in Advanced Dementia (PAINAD), demographic and pain-related data (Minimum Data Set), nursing assistant reports of participants' usual pain intensity, and Pittsburgh Agitation Scale. Results., Internal consistency for both tools was good except for the CNPI at rest for one rater. Inter-rater reliability for pain presence was fair (K = 0.25 for CNPI with movement; K = 0.31 for PAINAD at rest) to moderate (K = 0.43 for CNPI at rest; K = 0.54 for PAINAD with movement). There were significant differences in mean CNPI and PAINAD scores at rest and during movement, providing support for construct validity. However, both tools demonstrated marked floor effects, particularly when participants were at rest. Conclusions., Despite earlier studies supporting the reliability and validity of the CNPI and the PAINAD, findings from the current study indicate that these measures warrant further study with clinical users, should be used cautiously both in research and clinical settings and only as part of a comprehensive approach to pain assessment. [source] Usefulness of a program of hospital-supervised physical training in patients with cystic fibrosisPEDIATRIC PULMONOLOGY, Issue 2 2004Attilio Turchetta MD Abstract Exercise is an important part of normal childhood, but the ability to exercise may be impaired in chronic lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis (CF). Improving exercise performance by training is very attractive. The aim of the present study was the evaluation of the effects of a physical aerobic training program, performed in the Children's Hospital and Research Institute "Bambino Gesù" (Rome, Italy) in outpatient CF children, supervised by a physician. Twelve patients (mean forced expiratory flow in 1 sec (FEV1), 71%), age range 12,24 years (16.7 ± 4.4 years), were enrolled. They performed a maximal exercise stress test on the treadmill (modified Bruce protocol) with breath-by-breath determination of oxygen consumption (VO2) to maximum at end-exercise; we measured time of exercise (TE), maximal heart rate (Hrmax) in beats per minute (bpm), and maximal systolic blood pressure (SBPm) in mmHg. The program consisted of 12 weeks of training twice a week. Each training session consisted of walking or running on the treadmill for 30 min at the speed that allowed the child to attain 60% of the maximal heart rate obtained during a baseline stress test for 4 weeks, 70% in the following 4 weeks, and 80% in the last 4 weeks, under strict medical supervision. HR was continously monitored. There was no change in FEV1 and forced vital capacity after the treatment period. Hrmax and SBPm also remained the same (P,=,0.37 and P,=,0.25, respectively). There was a significant increase in TE (P,<,0.002), VO2, VO2/kg, and pulmonary ventilation (VE) (P,<,0.0001, P,<,0.001, and P,<,0.001, respectively). This pilot study showed that a simple training program improves short-term cardiopulmonary fitness in children with CF. Further studies with a larger sample and for a more prolonged time are necessary to assess if sport can have a long-term effect on lung function or survival in CF patients. [source] Use of an Automated Device for External Chest Compressions by First-aid Workers Unfamiliar With the Device: A Step Toward Public Access?ACADEMIC EMERGENCY MEDICINE, Issue 12 2009Frédéric Lapostolle MD Abstract Objective:, The objective was to establish the feasibility of using an automated external chest compression (ECC) device among first-aid workers unfamiliar with the device. Methods:, Eighty first-aid workers unfamiliar with the Autopulse ECC device were randomized into three groups. Group 1 was given two explanatory illustrations on device use. Group 2 was given four explanatory illustrations. Group 3 was shown a 5-minute video on the placement and use of the device and allowed to handle the device for 5 minutes. The time taken to place and start the device on a mannequin was recorded. Results:, There was no significant difference among the three groups with regard to age, sex ratio, experience, and time elapsed since their last training session. No mistakes in device placement were made by any of the groups. All 80 participants started ECC in less than 160 seconds. There was no significant difference between Groups 1 and 2 in time taken to place or start the device (medians and 25,75 percentiles = 72 [54,112] vs. 86 [46,130] seconds and 154 [103,183] vs. 156 [120,197] seconds, respectively). However, Group 3 first-aid workers obtained significantly better results (19 [16,26] seconds to place and 48 [40,65] seconds to start; p<0.0001). Conclusions:, An automated ECC device can be rapidly placed and used by first-aid workers unfamiliar with the device. In the light of these results, use of the device by the general public can be envisaged. Armenti ScD Abstract Background Central cancer registries are required to collect industry and occupation (I/O) information when available, but the data reported are often incomplete. Methods We audited the completeness of I/O data in the New Hampshire State Cancer Registry (NHSCR) database for diagnosis year 2005, and reviewed medical records for a convenience sample of 474 of these cases. We compared I/O data quality before and after a statewide registrar training session on occupationally related cancers. Results The original 2005 data contained both I/O data in 11.5% of cases, and lacked any I/O data in 74.5%. Corresponding figures for cases selected for audit were 15.2% and 77.2%, which improved to 54.2% and 11.8% after medical record review. After registrar training, 47% of reports contained both I/O data, and only 14.4% of cases lacked any I/O data. [source] Effects of positive reinforcement training techniques on the psychological welfare of zoo-housed chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes)AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PRIMATOLOGY, Issue 8 2009Ori Pomerantz Abstract Captive environments encompass various factors that can elevate stress levels and jeopardize the wellbeing of the captive animals. The use of positive reinforcement training (PRT) techniques enables researchers and caretakers to reduce tension directly associated with potentially stressful procedures and states. The current study tested the general effect of PRT on the wellbeing of zoo-housed chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) by measuring behaviors that reflect poor and good welfare and that were not directly connected to the specific aim of the training session. The behavior of a group of twelve chimpanzees was measured throughout the day from the exhibition yard, at baseline (12 weeks) and during the PRT period (10 weeks). The results show a significant decrease in abnormal and stress-related behaviors and a significant rise in prosocial affiliative behaviors following implementation of the training program. The training was shown to have a greater positive effect on low-ranking individuals compared with high-ranking ones. This research shows for the first time that PRT offers an enrichment effect whose general influence lasts throughout the day, irrespective of any direct link to a specific trained behavior. Consequently, it can be claimed that PRT presents an effective enrichment tool that can be implemented with captive animals. Because of the above-noted differential effect between high- and low-ranking chimpanzees, however, this should be taken into consideration when combining PRT with the non-human primates' daily routine. Fernström Abstract Positive reinforcement training (PRT) efficiency was examined as a function of training frequency in 33 pair- or triple-housed female rhesus macaques. The animals were trained three times a week, once a day or twice a day, using PRT and a clicker as a secondary reinforcer. All animals were trained on 30 sessions, with an average of 5,min per training session per animal. The behaviors, trained in succession, were Targeting (reliably touching and following a Target); Collaborating (dominant animals allowing subordinates to train while stationing); Box-training (accepting being enclosed in a small compartment while responding to Target training) and initial Injection training. Fulfilled criteria for Targeting were obtained in 32/33 animals in a median of nine training sessions. Collaboration was obtained in 27/33 animals in a median of 15 training sessions. However, only four animals completed Box-training during the 30 training sessions and started Injection training. When comparing training success in terms of number of training sessions, training twice a day was less efficient than the other two treatments. In terms of daily progress, our results suggest that from a management perspective, daily training is more conducive to quick training success than thrice weekly training. [source] Synthesized views can improve face recognitionAPPLIED COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 7 2009Chang Hong Liu It is well known that a new face studied from one view is often difficult to identify from another. This viewpoint dependence has detrimental implications for forensic practice. To compensate for this problem, we employed synthesized face images in the training session of a standard old/new recognition task. Observers in the experimental conditions learned one or more synthesized face images along with an original photograph of the face in a different view, whereas observers in the control conditions learned only the original photograph of the face. It was found that the experimental conditions consistently produced better recognition accuracy than the control conditions. [source] The effect of supervisory feedback, self-recording, and graphic feedback on trainer behavior during one-to-one trainingBEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS, Issue 4 2005Annemarie van Vonderen The effectiveness of supervisory feedback, self-recording, and graphic feedback on trainer behavior during one-to-one training sessions was assessed with three trainers, and three students with mental retardation. Supervisory feedback consisted of a supervisor interrupting the course of the training if an error occurred, administering appraisal when accurate trainer behavior occurred, and prompting the trainer to avoid errors. Following this, self-recording and graphic feedback were in effect. During the latter condition, the trainer was instructed to record her own behavior, to graph the data following each training session, and to set a goal to increase her performance. Data were collected in a quasi non-concurrent multiple baseline design across dyads of trainers and students. The results showed a statistically significant increase of accurate trainer behavior during supervisory feedback, which was maintained during the condition of self-recording and graphic feedback. Maintenance of trainer behavior was recorded during follow-up. The trainers rated supervisory feedback as more acceptable than self-recording and graphic feedback. Dulon Summary Background, Health care workers have an increased risk of occupational dermatosis. Objectives To determine whether a skin care programme reduces skin disease on the hands of geriatric nurses and increases protective behaviour and the provision of skin care products at the workplace. The intervention was based on a 2-h skin care training session and an occupational advisory service. Methods, The study design was a randomized intervention study with a control group. Three hundred and eighty-eight geriatric nurses were included in the intervention group exposed to a skin care programme (IG; n = 146) and in the control group (CG; n = 242). Both groups completed questionnaires on exposure and underwent clinical examinations of their hands at the beginning and after a 12-month period. Preventive measures initiated by the employer at the workplace were documented at baseline and at 3 months after the intervention. Results, At baseline, no difference between the IG and the CG was found with respect to skin changes or work-related behaviour. At follow-up, the frequency of skin disease was significantly reduced in the IG, from 26% at baseline to 17% at follow-up, whereas the frequency remained almost unchanged in the CG. Effects on behaviour in the IG included significant increases in the use of moisturizers and hand disinfection instead of hand washing. The provision of cotton gloves and barrier cream products increased at intervention workplaces. Conclusions, Effective implementation of an occupational skin care programme for geriatric nurses should include both the training of the nurses and an occupational advisory service for management. [source] A study examining inter-rater and intrarater reliability of a novel instrument for assessment of psoriasis: the Copenhagen Psoriasis Severity IndexBRITISH JOURNAL OF DERMATOLOGY, Issue 2 2008J. Berth-Jones Summary Background, There is a perceived need for a better method for clinical assessment of the severity of psoriasis vulgaris. The most frequently used system is the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), which has significant disadvantages, including the requirement for assessment of the percentage of skin affected, an inability to separate milder cases, and a lack of linearity. The Copenhagen Psoriasis Severity Index (CoPSI) is a novel approach which comprises assessment of three signs: erythema, plaque thickness and scaling, each on a four-point scale (0, none; 1, mild; 2, moderate; 3, severe), at each of 10 sites: face, scalp, upper limbs (excluding hands and wrists), hands and wrists, chest and abdomen, back, buttocks and sacral area, genitalia, lower limbs (excluding feet and ankles), feet and ankles. Objectives, To evaluate the inter-rater and intrarater reliability of the CoPSI and to provide comparative data from the PASI and a Physician's Global Assessment (PGA) used in recent clinical trials on psoriasis vulgaris. Methods, On the day before the study, 14 dermatologists (raters) with an interest in psoriasis participated in a detailed training session and discussion (2·5 h) on use of the scales. On the study day, each rater evaluated 16 adults with chronic plaque psoriasis in the morning and again in the afternoon. Raters were randomly assigned to assess subjects using the scales in a specific sequence, either PGA, CoPSI, PASI or PGA, PASI, CoPSI. Each rater used one sequence in the morning and the other in the afternoon. The primary endpoint was the inter-rater and intrarater reliability as determined by intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Results, All three scales demonstrated ,substantial' (a priori defined as ICC > 80%) intrarater reliability. The inter-rater reliability for each of the CoPSI and PASI was also ,substantial' and for the PGA was ,moderate' (ICC 61%). The CoPSI was better at distinguishing between milder cases. Conclusions, The CoPSI and the PASI both provided reproducible psoriasis severity assessments. In terms of both intrarater and inter-rater reliability values, the CoPSI and the PASI are superior to the PGA. The CoPSI may overcome several of the problems associated with the PASI. In particular, the CoPSI avoids the need to estimate a percentage of skin involved, is able to separate milder cases where the PASI lacks sensitivity, and is also more linear and simpler. The CoPSI also incorporates more meaningful weighting of different anatomical areas. Griffiths Summary Background, Most patients with psoriasis have limited disease which can be managed effectively in primary care. There is a marked variation in the frequency of referrals between practices reflecting, in part, inadequate training of general practitioners (GPs) in the management of psoriasis. Objectives, To assess the effectiveness of guidelines and training sessions on the management of psoriasis in reducing inappropriate referrals from primary care. Methods, Patients aged 18 years or over with psoriasis were eligible for the cluster-randomized, randomized controlled trial if they were referred by their GP between 9 September 2002 and 31 December 2003 to one of four hospital dermatology departments in Greater Manchester, North-West England. All GPs from 165 health centres were invited to a lecture by a local dermatologist on the diagnosis and management of psoriasis. Health centres in the intervention arm received guidelines on the management of psoriasis in primary care, developed by local dermatologists, supplemented by the offer of a practice-based nurse-led training session; those in the control arm received neither guidelines nor training sessions. Results, Eighty-two health centres were randomized to the intervention arm and 83 to the control arm. Outcome data were available for 188 of the 196 eligible patients referred during the study period. Patients in the intervention arm were significantly more likely to be appropriately referred in comparison with patients in the control arm [difference = 19·1%; odds ratio (OR) 2·47; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1·31,4·68; intracluster correlation coefficient (ICC) = 0]. Only 25 (30%) health centres in the intervention arm took up the offer of training sessions. There was no significant difference in outcome between health centres in the intervention arm that received a training session and those that did not (OR 1·28, 95% CI 0·50,3·29, ICC = 0). Conclusions, Dissemination of guidelines on the management of psoriasis in primary care can significantly enhance the appropriateness of referral of patients to secondary care. Endurance exercise induces a variety of metabolic and morphological responses/adaptations in skeletal muscle that function to minimize cellular disturbances during subsequent training sessions. 2. Chronic adaptations in skeletal muscle are likely to be the result of the cumulative effect of repeated bouts of exercise, with the initial signalling responses leading to such adaptations occurring after each training session. 3. Recently, activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase signalling cascade has been proposed as a possible mechanism involved in the regulation of many of the exercise-induced adaptations in skeletal muscle. 4. The protein targets of AMP-activated protein kinase also appear to be involved in both the regulation of acute metabolic responses and chronic adaptations to exercise. 5. Endurance training is associated with an increase in the activities of key enzymes of the mitochondrial electron transport chain and a concomitant increase in mitochondrial protein concentration. These morphological changes, along with increased capillary supply, result in a shift in trained muscle to a greater reliance on fat as a fuel with a concomitant reduction in glycolytic flux and tighter control of acid,base status. Homma Abstract Aim:, To examine the effects of low-volume muscle endurance training on muscle oxidative capacity, endurance and strength of the forearm muscle during 21-day forearm immobilization (IMM-21d). Methods:, The non-dominant arm (n = 15) was immobilized for 21 days with a cast and assigned to an immobilization-only group (Imm-group; n = 7) or an immobilization with training group (Imm+Tr-group; n = 8). Training comprised dynamic handgrip exercise at 30% of pre-intervention maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) at 1 Hz until exhaustion, twice a week during the immobilization period. The duration of each exercise session was 51.7 ± 3.4 s (mean ± SE). Muscle oxidative capacity was evaluated by the time constant for phosphocreatine recovery (,offPCr) after a submaximal handgrip exercise using 31phosphorus-magnetic resonance spectroscopy. An endurance test was performed at 30% of pre-intervention MVC, at 1 Hz, until exhaustion. Results:,,offPCr was significantly prolonged in the Imm-group after 21 days (42.0 ± 2.8 and 64.2 ± 5.1 s, pre- and post-intervention respectively; P < 0.01) but did not change for the Imm+Tr-group (50.3 ± 3.0 and 48.8 ± 5.0 s, ns). Endurance decreased significantly for the Imm-group (55.1 ± 5.1 and 44.7 ± 4.6 s, P < 0.05) but did not change for the Imm+Tr-group (47.9 ± 3.0 and 51.7 ± 4.0 s, ns). MVC decreased similarly in both groups (P < 0.01). Conclusions:, Twice-weekly muscle endurance training sessions, each lasting approx. 50 s, effectively prevented a decrease in muscle oxidative capacity and endurance; however, there was no effect on MVC decline with IMM-21d. Freeman Abstract Previous studies demonstrated that the development of auditory conditioned stimulus (CS) input to the cerebellum may be a neural mechanism underlying the ontogenetic emergence of eyeblink conditioning in rats. The current study investigated the role of developmental changes in the projections of the cochlear nucleus (CN) in the ontogeny of eyeblink conditioning using electrical stimulation of the CN as a CS. Rat pups were implanted with a bipolar stimulating electrode in the CN and given six 100-trial training sessions with a 300 ms stimulation train in the CN paired with a 10 ms periorbital shock unconditioned stimulus (US) on postnatal days (P) 17,18 or 24,25. Control groups were given unpaired presentations of the CS and US. Rats in both age groups that received paired training showed significant increases in eyeblink conditioned responses across training relative to the unpaired groups. The rats trained on P24,25, however, showed stronger conditioning relative to the group trained on P17,18. Rats with missed electrodes in the inferior cerebellar peduncle or in the cerebellar cortex did not show conditioning. Vinet Abstract Background, In children, there is very limited evidence focusing on the beneficial effect of exercise training on heart rate variability (HRV) during childhood. Despite the fact that more and more children are engaged in intensive training programs, the question arises if such intensive training involves deleterious effects on the cardiac autonomic nervous system during childhood. Thus the aim of the present study was to compare HRV parameters in highly trained swimmer boys and untrained counterparts. Methods, Twenty prepubertal boys, aged 11,12 years old, took part in the study. The children were divided into 11 highly trained prepubertal swimmers (training sessions of 8,10 h weekly for at least 4 years) and 9 age-matched active boys. HRV analysis was performed on diurnal recordings in the frequency (short-term recordings 6 min the most ,vagal') and time (long-term recordings 4 h centred on the 6 min most ,vagal') domains. Results, No significant differences were obtained between groups for all frequency variables whatever the mode of expression (absolute in ms2, relative in Ln or %). All time-domain components were not significantly different in swimmers and untrained boys. Conclusions, The results of the present study demonstrate that participating intensively in swimming training does not induce in children changes in HRV indices. Neither time nor domain HRV variables were significantly different between untrained and highly trained prepubertal boys. Thus, intensive training in healthy children does not involve deleterious effects on HRV. [source] |
