Selected AbstractsEffects of drying process on biochemical and microbiological quality of silverside (fish) Atherina lagunaeINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF FOOD SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY, Issue 6 2010Salah Selmi Summary Changes in biochemical and microbiological quality of silverside during two drying process were investigated. Total fatty acid and amino acid contents in silverside were 5.42 and 10.9 g 100 g,1 fresh sample, respectively, in which, palmitic acid and glutamic acid were the most abundant. N-3 and n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) levels were 0.59 and 0.62 g 100 g,1 fresh silverside respectively. After hot air and solar drying treatments, Peroxide value and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances of the total lipids increased significantly (P < 0.05) to reach 2.58 and 3.41 meq active O2 kg,1 oil and 0.87 and 1.27 mg MA kg,1 oil, respectively. Fatty acid profile of non-polar lipid remains unchanged during experimental drying process. However, PUFA (% of total fatty acids) of polar lipid decreased significantly (P < 0.05) during both drying process with lower levels in solar drying process. Drying conditions had a significant effect on the microbiological quality. Therefore, mesophiles and total coliforms increased within drying treatment with higher counts in solar drying process. [source] MODULATION OF VERY-LONG CHAIN (C28) HIGHLY UNSATURATED FATTY ACIDS IN PROROCENTRUM MININUM (DINOPHYCEAE) BY SELENIUMJOURNAL OF PHYCOLOGY, Issue 2000A. Place Recently, very-long-chain (C28) highly unsaturated fatty acids (VLC-HUFA) were identified in seven marine dinoflagellate species (Manour et al., Phytochemistry, 1999, 50: 541,548). In general, the proportion of these fatty acids accounted for less than 2.3% of the total fatty acids in these species. As part of a study investigating the modulation of the hemolytic fatty acid 18:5n3, cultures of Prorocentrum mininum were grown in artificial seawater with varying molarities of sodium selenite (0, 1, 10, and 100 nM). Optimal growth was observed at 1 nM with this media. As expected, the level of 18:5n3 was modulated by the selenium in the culture medium (7.0 ± 0.2, 14.5 ± 0.6, 7.4 ± 0.8, and 3.9 ± 0.8% of total fatty acid, respectively), with the highest percentage found at 1 nM. Unexpectedly the level of VLC-HUFA (28:8n3) increased to 7.3 ± 2.8% at 0 nM sodium selenite, while at all other selenite concentrations the VLC-HUFA was less than 1%. A possible biochemical basis for this finding will be discussed. [source] Identification and Functional Characterization of the Delta 6-Fatty Acid Desaturase Gene from Thamnidium elegansTHE JOURNAL OF EUKARYOTIC MICROBIOLOGY, Issue 1 2007DEPEI WANG ABSTRACT. A cDNA sequence was cloned from the filamentous fungus Thamnidium elegans As3.2806 using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and rapid amplification of cDNA ends method (RACE). Sequence analysis indicated that this cDNA sequence has an open reading frame of 1,380 bp, which encodes a 52.4 kDa peptide of 459 amino acids. The designated amino acid sequence has high similarity with that found in fungal delta 6-fatty acid desaturases: it shows three conserved histidine-rich motifs and two hydrophobic domains. A cytochrome b5-like domain was observed at the N-terminus. To elucidate the function of this novel putative desaturase, the open reading frame was cloned into the intracellular expression vector pPIC3.5K and the gene was expressed heterologously in Pichia pastoris. Accumulation of ,-linolenic acid to the level of 6.83% in total fatty acid demonstrated that the deduced amino acid sequence possesses of delta 6-fatty acid desaturase activity. [source] Evaluation of indigenous marine periphytic Amphora, Navicula and Cymbella grown on substrate as feed supplement in Penaeus monodon postlarval hatchery systemAQUACULTURE NUTRITION, Issue 2 2009H. KHATOON Abstract Three isolated marine diatoms (Amphora, Navicula and Cymbella) grown on substrate were evaluated as feed supplement for Penaeus monodon postlarvae (PL) in hatchery system for a period of 19 days without changing water. Specific growth rate (day,1) (0.27 ± 0.0) and survival (%) (56.3 ± 1.8) of PLs were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in treatment tanks when compared with the control (0.20 ± 0.0; 36.0 ± 1.5, respectively). Shrimp PLs reared in substrate-based tanks had significantly higher (P < 0.05) levels of protein, lipid (521.0 ± 7.0; 304.0 ± 2 g kg,1 dry weight, respectively), ecosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (189.0 ± 2.0; 176.0 ± 2 g kg,1 of total fatty acid, respectively) than the control (435.0 ± 22.0; 258.0 ± 22 g kg,1 dry weight; 172.0 ± 5.0; 152 ± 2 g kg,1 total fatty acid, respectively). The periphytic diatoms contained protein and lipid (430,490; 230,260 g kg,1 dry weight, respectively), EPA (30,150 g kg,1 of total fatty acids), DHA (20,30 g kg,1 of total fatty acids) and nine essential amino acids. The results showed that isolated marine periphytic diatoms grown on substrate could be used as feed supplement in enhancing the growth and survival of P. monodon postlarvae. [source] Long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) and perinatal developmentACTA PAEDIATRICA, Issue 4 2001B Koletzko This paper reports on the conclusions of a workshop on the role of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA) in maternal and child health The attending investigators involved in the majority of randomized trials examining LC-PUFA status and functional outcomes summarize the current knowledge in the field and make recommendations for dietary practice. Only studies published in full or in abstract form were used as our working knowledge base. Conclusions: For healthy infants we recommend and strongly support breastfeeding as the preferred method of feeding, which supplies preformed LC-PUFA. Infant formulas for term infants should contain at least 0.2% of total fatty acids as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and 0.35% as arachidonic acid (AA). Since preterm infants are born with much less total body DHA and AA, we suggest that preterm infant formulas should include at least 0.35% DHA and 0.4% AA. Higher levels might confer additional benefits and should be further investigated because optimal dietary intakes for term and preterm infants remain to be defined. For pregnant and lactating women we consider it premature to recommend specific LC-PUFA intakes. However, it seems prudent for pregnant and lactating women to include some food sources of DHA in their diet in view of their assumed increase in LC-PUFA demand and the relationship between maternal and foetal DHA status. [source] Supercritical fluid extraction of lipids from the heterotrophic microalga Crypthecodinium cohniiENGINEERING IN LIFE SCIENCES (ELECTRONIC), Issue 2 2010Ricardo Miguel Couto Abstract Microalgae biomass can be a feasible source of ,-3 fatty acids due to its stable and reliable composition. In the present study, the Crypthecodinium cohnii growth and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6,3) production in a 100,L glucose-fed batch fermentation was evaluated. The lipid compounds were extracted by supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) from C. cohnii CCMP 316 biomas, was and their fatty acid composition was analysed. Supercritical fluid extraction runs were performed at temperatures of 313 and 323,K and pressures of 20.0, 25.0 and 30.0,MPa. The optimum extraction conditions were found to be 30.0,MPa and 323,K. Under those conditions, almost 50% of the total oil contained in the raw material was extracted after 3,h and the DHA composition attained 72%,w/w of total fatty acids. The high DHA percentage of total fatty acids obtained by SC-CO2 suggested that this extraction method may be suitable for the production of C. cohnii value added products directed towards pharmaceutical purposes. Furthermore, the fatty acid composition of the remaining lipid fraction from the residual biomass with lower content in polyunsaturated fatty acids could be adequate for further uses as feedstock for biodiesel, contributing to the economy of the overall process suggesting an integrated biorefinery approach. [source] Structural and compositional changes in very low density lipoprotein triacylglycerols during basal lipolysisFEBS JOURNAL, Issue 24 2002Jyrki J. Ågren Triacylglycerols secreted by liver and carried by very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) are hydrolysed in circulation by lipoprotein and hepatic lipases. These enzymes have been shown to have positional and fatty acid specificity in vitro. If there were specificity in basal lipolysis in vivo, triacylglycerol compositions of circulating and newly secreted VLDL would be different. To study this we compared the composition of normal fasting VLDL triacylglycerol of Wistar rats to that obtained after blocking lipolysis by Triton WR1339, which increased plasma VLDL triacylglycerol concentration about 4.7-fold in 2 h. Analyses of molecular species of sn -1,2- and sn -2,3-diacylglycerol moieties and stereospecific triacylglycerol analysis revealed major differences between the groups in the VLDL triacylglycerol composition. In nontreated rats, the proportion of 16:0 was higher and that of 18:2n-6 lower in the sn -1 position. The proportion of 14:0 was lower in all positions and that of 18:0 was lower in the sn -1 and sn -3 positions in nontreated rats whereas the proportions of 20:4n-6, 20:5n-3, 22:5n-3 and 22:6n-3 were higher in the sn -1 and lower in the sn -2 position. These results suggest that the fatty acid of the sn -1 position is the most decisive factor in determining the sensitivity for hydrolysis of the triacylglycerol. In addition, triacylglycerol species with highly unsaturated fatty acids in the sn -2 position also favoured hydrolysis. The in vivo substrate specificity followed only partly that obtained in in vitro studies indicating that the nature of molecular association of fatty acids in natural triacylglycerol affects its susceptibility to lipolysis. To conclude, our results indicate that preferential basal lipolysis leads to major structural differences between circulating and newly secreted VLDL triacylglycerol. These differences extend beyond those anticipated from analysis of total fatty acids and constitute a previously unrecognized feature of VLDL triacylglycerol metabolism. [source] EFFECT OF DIFFERENT STORAGE CONDITIONS ON THE LIPID FRACTION OF A VEGETABLE CREAMJOURNAL OF FOOD QUALITY, Issue 4 2008FEDERICO FERIOLI ABSTRACT Fatty acids (free and esterified), diglycerides, peroxides and total sterols were determined in a vegetable cream. Cream samples were analyzed when fresh and after storage for 3 and 6 months at 4, 15, 30C and room temperature (10,25C). The product showed a higher amount of unsaturated fatty acids (,50% of total fatty acids) with respect to milk fat and a low level of cholesterol (<0.01%). The phytosterol content (,14 mg/100 g of cream) was not high enough to contribute to a decrease in cholesterolemia. Lipid oxidation remained low during storage (peroxides: 2.0,3.0 meq O2/kg of fat), but a small increase was observed at room temperature after 6 months (about 6.0 meq O2/kg of fat). Free fatty acids never exceeded 0.3% of fat. Storage at 4C and 15C delayed lipolysis in comparison to storage at 30C and room temperature. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS The analysis of a vegetable cream demonstrated that it was a shelf-stable product, showing a high stability toward lipid oxidation and lipolysis. Such a product might be employed as vehicle for healthy fat compounds like long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, phytosterols and fat-soluble vitamins. Voigt Objective To determine the influence of ,-linolenic acid (ALA; 18 : 3,3) intake and, hence, the influence of plasma and/or erythrocyte phospholipid content of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22 : 6,3) during early infancy on neurodevelopmental outcome of term infants. Methods The Bayley Scales of Infant Development (second edition), the Clinical Adaptive Test/Clinical Linguistic and Auditory Milestone Scale (CAT/CLAMS) and the Gross Motor Scale of the Revised Gesell Developmental Inventory were administered at a mean age of 12.26 ± 0.94 months to 44 normal term infants enrolled in a study evaluating the effects of infant formulas differing only in ALA content (0.4, 1.0, 1.7 and 3.2% of total fatty acids). Results As reported previously [Jensen et al., Lipids 13 (1996) 107; J. Pediatr. 131 (1997) 200], the group fed the formula with the lowest ALA content had the lowest mean plasma and erythrocyte phospholipid DHA contents at 4 months of age. This group also had the lowest mean score on every neurodevelopmental measure. The difference in mean gross motor developmental quotient of this group versus the group fed the formula with 1.0% ALA but not of the other groups was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Across the groups, motor indices correlated positively with each other and with the plasma phospholipid DHA content at 4 months of age (P=0.02,0.03). The CLAMS developmental quotient correlated with the erythrocyte phospholipid content of 20 : 5,3 (P < 0.01) but not with DHA. Conclusions These statistically significant correlations suggest that the ,3 fatty acid status during early infancy may be important with respect to neurodevelopmental status at 1 year of age and highlight the need for further studies of this possibility. [source] Effect of inoculated corn silage enriched with sunflower oil on rumen fermentation and lipid metabolism in an artificial rumen (RUSITEC)JOURNAL OF THE SCIENCE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, Issue 1 2010an Jal Abstract BACKGROUND: Some rumen isolates are able to produce conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) from linoleic acid (LA) in vitro. Effects of providing diets containing corn silage (CS) and lucerne hay to an artificial rumen (RUSITEC) in which the corn was not inoculated (CS), or inoculated with Lactobacillus plantarum CCM 4000 (CS + LP), Lactobacillus fermentum LF2 (CS + LF) or Enterococcus faecium CCM 4231 (CS + EF) and supplied with sunflower oil (SO; 30 g kg,1; w/w) on rumen metabolism were examined. RESULTS: The SO affected the outputs of all fatty acids. TVA output of uninoculated CS with SO was lower as compared to inoculated CS. The interaction of the CS × SO in the daily output of TVA was detected (P < 0.001). The biohydrogenation of oleic, linoleic, ,-linolenic and total fatty acids was influenced by SO (P < 0.05 and P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Inoculated silage induces changes in the rumen metabolism which might be related to differences observed in the extent of rumen BH of PUFA in RUSITEC. SO supplementation might positively enhances the production of some rumen intermediates; however, relationships between inoculated silages and oil supplementation can be presumed in the daily production of trans -vaccenic acid. Copyright © 2009 Society of Chemical Industry [source] Distribution of fatty acids in edible organs and seed fractions of borage (Borago officinalis L.)JOURNAL OF THE SCIENCE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, Issue 2 2008Mercedes del Río-Celestino Abstract BACKGROUND: Borage (Borago officinalis L.) is currently used as a vegetable in the north of Spain. The edible parts of the plant are the petioles, leaves and stems. The objective of this study was to determine the oil and fatty acids content in the edible tissues (leaves, petioles and stems) and seed fractions (endosperm + cotyledon, seed coat and elaiosome) of white- and blue-flowered borage accessions. RESULTS: Leaves showed higher mean values of oil content (2.7%) than petioles and stems (1.1% and 1.4%, respectively) in both, blue- and white-flowered material. The most abundant fatty acids in leaves were palmitic, linoleic, ,-linolenic and stearidonic acids (about 75% of the total fatty acids), while in petioles and stems myristic and linoleic acids were most abundant (about 60% of the total fatty acids). Palmitic, oleic, linoleic and ,-linolenic (GLA) acids were the major fatty acids of seed coat and endosperm + cotyledon in borage seeds (85% of the total fatty acids), while palmitic, stearic, oleic and linoleic acids were the most abundant fatty acids of elaisome in borage seeds (80% of the total fatty acids). CONCLUSION: This paper shows that green parts of borage contain substantial amounts of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are essential fatty acids for animal and human nutrition. Thus, borage could be a ,power food' of the future because of its content of unsaturated fatty acids, particularly the essential fatty acids, which have great potential to prevent cardiovascular disease, cancer and infectious diseases. Copyright © 2007 Society of Chemical Industry [source] Dietary effects on growth, plasma lipid and tissues of rats fed with non-conventional oil of Telfairia occidentalisJOURNAL OF THE SCIENCE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, Issue 13 2004Ibironke A Ajayi Abstract The nutritional value of Telfairia occidentalis seed and seed oil available in local market was studied in rats. The average values of the proximate analysis on dry matter basis were 203 g kg,1 crude protein, 536.3 g kg,1 fat, 39 g kg,1 ash, 95 g kg,1 crude fibre and 43.7 g kg,1 carbohydrate, while the moisture content was 75 g kg,1. The mineral analyses showed that T occidentalis seeds contain potassium (3280 mg kg,1), sodium (1230 mg kg,1), magnesium (60.8 mg kg,1), calcium (60.8 mg kg,1) and iron (13.0 mg kg,1). The oil extracted from the seed sample showed physicochemical properties that suggest its suitability for edible and industrial uses. The oil contained high levels of unsaturated fatty acids, oleic and linoleic, which accounted for 63.22% of total fatty acids recovered, while palmitic acid (27.4% of the oil by weight) was the most prevalent saturated fatty acid in the oil. No trace of eleostearic acid was detected in the oil. The effect on physical appearance, weight gain, organ weight, tissue and plasma cholesterol and triacylglycerol levels was determined in rats fed a diet containing 5% T occidentalis oil. These were compared with those of rats fed a control diet (0% T occidentalis oil) over an 8 week study period. Weekly monitoring of the rats showed good physical appearance and steady weight increase. The test rats were not anaemic and no mortality was recorded. While there was a significantly higher (p < 0.05) level of cholesterol in the heart of test rats compared with the control, there was a significantly lower (p < 0.05) plasma cholesterol level, suggesting that T occidentalis seed oil can be used to lower plasma levels of cholesterol. Histological examination of the sections of the heart, liver, kidney and spleen of the test rats revealed varying degrees of pathology. These include artherosclerotic changes in the walls of vasa vasori and lymphatics in the heart and hyaline degeneration of myofibrils, fatty infiltration of hepatocytes, and glomerular and tubular degeneration in the kidneys. These lesions may have been due to the effect of fatty acids, especially erucic acid, in the seed oil, which at 1.24% (less that the 5% conventional allowable limit for edible oils) may be intolerable for rats and may be unsuitable for human consumption. The seed oil may be used for industrial purposes such as soap making, lubrication and cosmetics for which it is well suited. Copyright © 2004 Society of Chemical Industry [source] Effect of feeding oilseed supplements to dairy cows on ruminal and milk fatty acid compositionJOURNAL OF THE SCIENCE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, Issue 7 2002Brian F McNamee Abstract The objective of this study was to compare the effects of oilseed-based supplements, rapeseed and linseed, against a barley-based control, on the fatty acid composition, and subsequent solid fat ratio, of the milk fat from dairy cows. In addition, as a means of understanding the digestive processes which influence the milk fat composition, ruminal extracts were collected from the cows and analysed for fatty acid composition. Four lactating dairy cows each fitted with a rumen fistula were provided with silage and one of four concentrate diets. The main constituent of the concentrate supplements was either rapeseed (ground or unground), linseed (unground) or a barley control. The diets were offered in accordance with a 4,×,4 Latin square arrangement. The oilseed-supplemented concentrates provided the cows with 620,640,g fatty acids day,1. Experimental treatments were provided to the cows for 2 weeks, after which ruminal extracts were collected over a 24,h period and a milk sample was taken. All extracts were analysed for fatty acid composition. The diets fed influenced the long-chain fatty acid composition of the ruminal extracts and milk fat. The proportion of C18:1n-9 in the ruminal extracts increased from 202,224 to 282,321,g,kg,1 of the total fatty acids when the cows were provided with the rapeseed-based diets. The linseed-based diet increased the C18:1n-9 proportion of the ruminal extracts from 164 to 218,g,kg,1 of the total fatty acids. Both rapeseed-based diets also resulted in a higher proportion of C18:0 in the ruminal extract, possibly owing to biohydrogenation of the dietary fatty acids. This proportion of C18:0 in the ruminal extract was lowest immediately after feeding, increasing to a maximum 4,6,h later. Both rapeseed-based concentrates increased the proportion of C18:1n-9 in the milk fat to approximately 300,g,kg,1 of the total fatty acids as compared with 214,g,kg,1 for the control. The proportion of C18:1n-9 in the milk fat from the cows offered the linseed-based concentrate was 246,g,kg,1 of the total fatty acids. There were also significant decreases in the proportions of C16:0 in the milk fat from the cows offered all oilseed-based concentrates. There was no difference between the fatty acid compositions of the milk fats from the cows fed the ground or unground rapeseed-based supplements. The oilseed-based supplements also resulted in significant decreases in the solid fat content of the milk fat at temperatures ranging from 0 to 35,°C, which would be indicative of a softer, more spreadable butter. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry [source] Seed compositional studies of some species of Papilionoideae (Leguminosae) native to ArgentinaJOURNAL OF THE SCIENCE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE, Issue 3 2002Damián M Maestri Abstract Seeds of 17 wild leguminous species belonging to the Papilionoideae subfamily were analysed for their proximate, fatty acid and sterol compositions. Centrosema virginianum, Tipuana tipu, Adesmia volckmanni and some species of Desmodium contained high amounts (>300,g,kg,1) of protein. Geoffroea decorticans and Clitoria cordobensis were noteworthy for their high oil content (>350,g,kg,1). The seed lipids had a high proportion of unsaturated (oleic and linoleic mainly) fatty acids. Linolenic acid had the highest value in Adesmia volckmanni (25.4% of total fatty acids). ,-Sitosterol was the major component of the sterol fraction. Although the pathways for lipid biosynthesis have been identified, the factors that regulate the biosynthetic pathways at the transcriptional level are largely unknown. Here, we report our findings on the involvement of soybean Dof-type transcription factor genes in the regulation of the lipid content in soybean seeds. We identified 28 Dof-type transcription factor genes in soybean plants, and these genes displayed diverse patterns of expression in various organs. Seven flower/pod-specific genes and one constitutively expressed gene were further investigated. The proteins encoded by these seven genes were localized in the nucleus, and exhibited different abilities for transcriptional activation and DNA binding. Two genes, GmDof4 and GmDof11, were found to increase the content of total fatty acids and lipids in GmDof4 and GmDof11 transgenic Arabidopsis seeds. We also found that the 1000-seed weight was increased in the GmDof4 and GmDof11 transgenic plants. Using microarray and DNA binding analysis, we found that the two Dof-like proteins, GmDof4 and GmDof11, activated the acetyl CoA carboxylase gene and long-chain-acyl CoA synthetase gene, respectively, by direct binding to the cis -DNA elements in their promoter regions. In addition, both proteins downregulated the storage protein gene, CRA1, through direct binding. These results suggest that the two GmDof genes may augment the lipid content of soybean seeds by upregulating genes that are associated with the biosynthesis of fatty acids. KHATOON Abstract Three isolated marine diatoms (Amphora, Navicula and Cymbella) grown on substrate were evaluated as feed supplement for Penaeus monodon postlarvae (PL) in hatchery system for a period of 19 days without changing water. Specific growth rate (day,1) (0.27 ± 0.0) and survival (%) (56.3 ± 1.8) of PLs were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in treatment tanks when compared with the control (0.20 ± 0.0; 36.0 ± 1.5, respectively). Shrimp PLs reared in substrate-based tanks had significantly higher (P < 0.05) levels of protein, lipid (521.0 ± 7.0; 304.0 ± 2 g kg,1 dry weight, respectively), ecosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) (189.0 ± 2.0; 176.0 ± 2 g kg,1 of total fatty acid, respectively) than the control (435.0 ± 22.0; 258.0 ± 22 g kg,1 dry weight; 172.0 ± 5.0; 152 ± 2 g kg,1 total fatty acid, respectively). The periphytic diatoms contained protein and lipid (430,490; 230,260 g kg,1 dry weight, respectively), EPA (30,150 g kg,1 of total fatty acids), DHA (20,30 g kg,1 of total fatty acids) and nine essential amino acids. The results showed that isolated marine periphytic diatoms grown on substrate could be used as feed supplement in enhancing the growth and survival of P. monodon postlarvae. BOGEVIK Abstract Wax esters (WE) in copepods constitute huge natural marine lipid resources, which can contribute as future lipid source in formulated diets in aquaculture, and thereby reduce the pressure on use of marine resources at higher trophic levels. The present study was undertaken to investigate factors affecting WE digestibility, including production of bile and lipases in Atlantic salmon fed diets containing high proportions of oil derived from copepods. Individually tagged postsmolt Atlantic salmon (initial weight 250 g) were distributed into three dietary groups in triplicate tanks and fed either a fish oil supplemented diet or diets where 50% or 100% of the fish oil was replaced with oil extracted from Calanus finmarchicus. WE accounted for 30.7% or 47.7% of the lipids in these latter diets, respectively. Over the 100 day feeding period, the salmon fed the fish oil diet displayed a significantly higher specific growth rate (SGR; 0.74) than fish fed the 100%Calanus oil diet (SGR; 0.67). The apparent digestibility coefficient of total lipid and total fatty acids was significantly higher in salmon fed the fish oil and the mixed diet compared to fish fed the pure Calanus oil diet. However, the fish appeared to enhance the lipid digestive capacity by increasing bile volume and the lipolytic activity. It is concluded that the digestion of WE in Atlantic salmon is poorer than for triacylglycerols. However, the digestive capacity is increased by elevating the bile content and lipase activity. At very high levels however, WE of lipid between 37.5% and 47.7%, are there no more compensation and WE utilisation decreases. For instance, n-3 PUFA supplementation is reported to improve outcomes in major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder. However, the role of PUFAs in acute mania has been minimally investigated. We performed a pilot study to compare plasma levels of free (non-esterified) and esterified PUFAs between patients in an acute manic episode and healthy volunteers, and to explore associations between symptom severity and levels of fatty acids and of the arachidonic acid metabolite, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Methods:, Patients (n = 10) who were medication-free for at least two weeks and seeking inpatient admission for an acute manic episode were compared with healthy volunteers (n = 10). Symptom severity was assessed at admission and after six weeks of naturalistic treatment. Fasting baseline free and esterified plasma levels of docosahexaneoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), arachidonic acid (AA,20:4n-6) and the AA metabolite PGE2 were determined, and PGE2 levels were tested again at six weeks. Results:, No between-group differences were found in levels of individual or total fatty acids, or of PGE2. Among subjects, manic symptom severity correlated negatively with levels of free AA and free EPA, and positively with the free AA:EPA ratio. PGE2 levels did not differ between groups or in subjects pre- and post-treatment. Conclusions:, Our preliminary results suggest that, in susceptible persons, low plasma levels of free EPA compared with AA are related to the severity of mania. [source] AMINO ACID AND FATTY ACID COMPOSITION OF AN AQUEOUS EXTRACT OF CHANNA STRIATUS (HARUAN) THAT EXHIBITS ANTINOCICEPTIVE ACTIVITYCLINICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL PHARMACOLOGY AND PHYSIOLOGY, Issue 3 2007ZA Zakaria SUMMARY 1The present study was performed in order to determine the amino acid and fatty acid composition of an aqueous extract of the freshwater fish Channa striatus, obtained by soaking (1 : 2, w/v) fresh fillets overnight in a chloroform : methanol (2 : 1, v/v) solvent, to elucidate the mechanism responsible for its antinociceptive activity and to clarify the relationship between the presence of the amino and fatty acids and the expected activity. 2The aqueous extract was found to contain all amino acids with the major amino acids glycine, alanine, lysine, aspartic acid and proline making up 35.77 ± 0.58, 10.19 ± 1.27, 9.44 ± 0.56, 8.53 ± 1.15 and 6.86 ± 0.78% of the total protein, respectively. 3In addition, the aqueous extract was found to have a high palmitic acid (C16 : 0) content, which contributed approximately 35.93 ± 0.63% to total fatty acids. The other major fatty acids in the aqueous extract were oleic acid (C18 : 1), stearic acid (C18 : 0), linoleic acid (C18 : 2) and arachidonic acid (C20 : 4), contributing 22.96 ± 0.40, 15.31 ± 0.33, 11.45 ± 0.31 and 7.44,±,0.83% of total fatty acids, respectively. 4Furthermore, the aqueous extract was demonstrated to possess concentration-dependent antinociceptive activity, as expected, when assessed using the abdominal constriction test in mice. 5It is concluded that the aqueous extract of C. striatus contains all the important amino acids, but only some of the important fatty acids, which are suggested to play a key role in the observed antinociceptive activity of the extract, as well as in the traditionally claimed wound healing properties of the extract.
