Selected AbstractsEfficacy of laser Doppler flowmetry for the diagnosis of revascularization of reimplanted immature dog teethDENTAL TRAUMATOLOGY, Issue 2 2001Kallaya Yanpiset Abstract , This study was performed to assess if laser Doppler flowmetry (LDF) is an improved method for the detection of revascularization of replanted teeth. Teeth were extracted and reimplanted under different experimental conditions. LDF readings were taken before extraction and weekly for 3 months. In control teeth, LDF baseline readings were taken and then repeated after the apical blood vessels were cut surgically. At the end of 3 months it was determined radiographically and histologically whether revascularization had occurred, i.e. vitality had returned. Results: LDF readings correctly predicted the pulp status (vital vs. non-vital) in 83.7% of the readings. 73.9% (17 of 23) were correct for the vital teeth and 95% (19 of 20) were correct for the non-vital teeth. Fisher's exact test (2-tail) indicated that there was no significant association between the efficacy of LDF and tooth type (P=0.166), although P2 was the least accurate tooth tested. Wilcoxon's matched-pair signed rank test demonstrated that in the revascularized (vital) teeth, the flux value between the baseline and week 2 dropped significantly (P=0.0001), increased significantly from week 2 to week 4 (P=0.0001) and then decreased steadily until week 12. However, at week 12 the flux was still significantly higher than at week 2 (P=0.010). In the teeth that failed to revascularize, the flux value dropped significantly by weeks 1 and 2 (P=0.004 and P=0.0001, respectively). Flux values did not increase from week 2. A Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis confirmed a pulse of dominant frequency of 2 Hz in the teeth that returned to vitality and the lack thereof in those that stayed non-vital. One tooth in which the flux value evaluation indicated a non-vital tooth but the radiographic/histologic findings showed vital (false negative) possessed a pulse of dominant frequency and proved by this method to have successfully revascularized. [source] Factors influencing proximal dental contact strengthsEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ORAL SCIENCES, Issue 5 2000Christof E. Dörfer The aim of this study was to systematically measure proximal contact strength in complete natural dentitions of 30 adults (25.3±3.0 years of age), and to analyze its relationship to tooth type, tooth location, chewing effort and time of day variation. The contact strengths were measured dynamically during removal of a calibrated 0.05-mm-thick metal strip between the proximal contacts of adjacent teeth. Proximal contact strengths were lower in the maxilla (2.51±1.36 N) compared to the mandible (4.26±1.88 N). Within the jaws, the lowest proximal contact strength was measured between canine and first premolar (2.91±1.79 N) and the highest between second premolar and first molar (3.73±1.95 N). Chewing increased the proximal contact strength within the maxilla (before: 2.51±1.36 N, after: 3.02±1.45 N) but it remained unchanged in the mandible (before: 4.26±1.88 N, after: 4.22±1.85 N). The proximal contact strength increased significantly from morning (3.39±1.86 N) to noon (3.61±1.77 N), and then decreased in the afternoon (3.43±1.60 N). It was concluded that proximal contact strength can be significantly influenced by location, tooth type, chewing and time of day variation. Based on the differences in distribution due to the effect of chewing and time of day, it is speculated that proximal contact strength is a physiological entity of multifactorial origin. [source] Recording dental caries in archaeological human remainsINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF OSTEOARCHAEOLOGY, Issue 4 2001Simon Hillson Abstract Dental caries is an important condition to record in archaeological collections, but the way in which recording is carried out has a large effect on the way in which the results can be interpreted. In living populations, dental caries is a disease that shows a strong relationship with age. Both the nature of carious lesions and their frequency change with successive age groups from childhood to elderly adulthood. There is also a progression in the particular teeth in the dentition which are most commonly affected and, in general, the molars and premolars are involved much more frequently than the canines and incisors. Lower teeth are usually affected more than upper, although the condition usually involves the right and left sides fairly equally. In the high tooth wear rate populations represented by many archaeological and museum collections, there is a complex relationship between the form of lesions and the state of wear, which adds yet another range of factors to the changing pattern of caries with increasing age. In the same populations, chipping, fracture and anomalous abrasion of teeth are also common, and these contribute similarly to the distribution and forms of carious lesion observed. Amongst the living, the pattern of ante-mortem tooth loss is important in understanding caries and, in archaeological material, there is also the complicating factor of post-mortem tooth loss. Finally, there is the question of diagnosis. There are diagnostic problems even in epidemiological studies of living patients and, for archaeological specimens, diagenetic change and the variable preservation of different parts of the dentition add further complications. For all these reasons, it is difficult to define any one general index of dental caries to represent the complete dentition of each individual, which would be universally suitable for studying a full range of collections from archaeological sites or museums. Variation in the nature of collections, their preservation, tooth wear, and ante-mortem and post-mortem tooth loss mean that when such a general index appears to differ between sites, there could be many other reasons for this, in addition to any genuine differences in caries incidence and pattern that might have been present. It is suggested here that the best approach is instead to make comparisons separately for each tooth type, age group, sex, lesion type and potential lesion site on the tooth. [source] Brief communication: The distribution of perikymata on Qafzeh anterior teethAMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY, Issue 1 2010Debbie Guatelli-Steinberg Abstract Recent studies have suggested that Neandertals and modern humans differ in the distribution of perikymata (enamel growth increments) over their permanent anterior tooth crowns. In modern humans, perikymata become increasingly more compact toward the cervix than they do in Neandertals. Previous studies have suggested that a more homogeneous distribution of perikymata, like that of Neandertals, characterizes the anterior teeth of Homo heidelbergensis and Homo erectus as well. Here, we investigated whether Qafzeh anterior teeth (N = 14) differ from those of modern southern Africans, northern Europeans, and Alaskans (N = 47,74 depending on tooth type) in the percentage of perikymata present in their cervical halves. Using the normally distributed modern human values for each tooth type, we calculated Z -scores for the 14 Qafzeh teeth. All but two of the 14 Qafzeh teeth had negative Z -scores, meaning that values equal to these would be found in the bottom 50% of the modern human samples. Seven of the 14 would be found in the lowest 5% of the modern human distribution. Qafzeh teeth therefore appear to differ from those of modern humans in the same direction that Neandertals do: with generally lower percentages of perikymata in their cervical regions. The similarity between them appears to represent the retention of a perikymata distribution pattern present in earlier members of the genus Homo, but not generally characteristic of modern humans from diverse regions of the world. [source] Under restrictive conditions, can the widths of linear enamel hypoplasias be used as relative indicators of stress episode duration?AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY, Issue 2 2009Amelia Hubbard Abstract Linear enamel hypoplasia (LEH), a type of enamel defect reflecting nonspecific physiological stress, has traditionally been used by bioarchaeologists to assess human health. Initially, measurements of defect width were used to estimate the duration of stress episodes. More recently, methods of counting within-defect perikymata (enamel growth increments) were developed to more accurately assess duration. Because perikymata are often not continuously visible within defects, while widths can usually be measured, the primary purpose of this article was to determine if, under restrictive conditions, the widths of LEH defects might be used as relative indicators of stress episode duration. Using a set of dental replicas from the prehistoric Irene Mound (1150,1400 A.D.), this study also investigated potential sources of variation in defect widths and how often defect widths could be measured and within-defect perikymata counted. Of 120 defects, only 47 contained both measurable defect widths and total within-defect perikymata, while 79 had measurable defect widths. Regression analysis revealed that, for these 47 defects, defect widths were more strongly related to the total number of within-defect perikymata than they were to crown region or tooth type. Although wide prediction intervals indicated that a defect's width could not be used to predict the number of within-defect perikymata for an individual, narrower confidence intervals associated with hypothetical mean population widths suggested that mean defect widths might be used to rank populations in terms of relative average stress episode duration. [source] Internal bleaching of teeth: an analysis of 255 teethAUSTRALIAN DENTAL JOURNAL, Issue 4 2009P Abbott Abstract Background:, Studies about bleaching have not analysed factors that affect the outcome. This aim of this study was to analyse the outcome of, and the factors associated with bleaching. Methods:, Internal bleaching was done on 255 teeth in 203 patients. Colour was assessed pre-operatively, postoperatively and at recalls. The cause and type of discolouration, number of applications, bleaching outcome, and colour stability were assessed. Results:, The most common teeth were upper central (69 per cent) and lateral (20.4 per cent) incisors. Trauma was the most common cause (58.8 per cent), followed by previous dental treatment (23.9 per cent), pulp necrosis (13.7 per cent) and pulp canal calcification (3.6 per cent). Dark yellow and black teeth required more applications of bleach than light yellow and grey teeth. Colour modification was "good" (87.1 per cent) or "acceptable" (12.9 per cent). Teeth restored with glass ionomer cement/composite resin had good colour stability, but this was less predictable with other restorations. No teeth had external invasive resorption. Conclusions:, Bleaching endodontically treated teeth was very predictable, especially for grey or light yellow discolourations. Glass ionomer cement/composite restorations were effective at preventing further discolouration. Patient age and tooth type did not affect treatment outcome and no cases of external invasive resorption were observed. [source] Temperature changes in dental pulp associated with use of power grinding equipment on equine teethAUSTRALIAN VETERINARY JOURNAL, Issue 1-2 2005GJ WILSON Objective To quantify the temperature changes in the dental pulp associated with equine dental procedures using power grinding equipment. Design A matrix experimental design with replication on the same sample was followed to allow the following independent variables to be assessed: horse age (young or old), tooth type (premolar or molar), powered grinding instrument (rotating disc or die grinder), grinding time (15 or 20 seconds) and the presence or absence of water coolant. Procedure Sound premolar and molar teeth from a 6-year-old horse and a 15-year-old horse, which had been removed postmortem, were sectioned parallel to the occlusal plane to allow placement of a miniature thermocouple at the level of the dental pulp. The maximum temperature increase, the time taken to reach this maximum and the cooling time were measured (n=10 in each study). The teeth were placed in a vice and the instrument used on the tooth as per clinical situation. Results Significant differences were recorded for horse age (P < 0.001), instrument type (P < 0.001), grinding time (P < 0.001) and presence or absence of coolant (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference for tooth type. Conclusion Thermal insult to the dental pulp from the use of power instruments poses a significant risk to the tooth. This risk can be reduced or eliminated by appropriate selection of treatment time and by the use of water irrigation as a coolant. The increased dentine thickness in older horses appears to mitigate against thermal injury from frictional heat. [source] Minimally Invasive Flapless Implant Surgery: A Prospective Multicenter StudyCLINICAL IMPLANT DENTISTRY AND RELATED RESEARCH, Issue 2005ODhc, William Becker DDS ABSTRACT Background: Placement of implants with a minimally invasive flapless approach has the potential to minimize crestal bone loss, soft tissue inflammation, and probing depth adjacent to implants and to minimize surgical time. Purpose: The aim of this multicenter study was to evaluate implant placement using a minimally invasive one-stage flapless technique up to 2 years. Materials and Methods: Fifty-seven patients ranging in age from 24 to 86 years were recruited from three clinical centers (Tucson, AZ, USA; Tel Aviv, Israel; Göteborg, Sweden). Seventy-nine implants were placed. A small, sharp-tipped guiding drill was used to create a precise, minimally invasive initial penetration through the mucosa and into bone (Nobel Biocare, Yorba, Linda, CA, USA). Implants were placed according to the manufacturer's instructions, with minimal countersinking. The parameters evaluated were total surgical time, implant survival, bone quality and quantity, implant position by tooth type, depth from mucosal margin to bone crest, implant length, probing depth, inflammation, and crestal bone changes. At 2 years, for 79 implants placed in 57 patients, the cumulative success rate using a minimally invasive flapless method was 98.7%, indicating the loss of 1 implant. Changes in crestal bone for 77 baseline and follow-up measurements were insignificant (radiograph 1: mean 0.7 mm, SD 0.5 mm, range 2.8 mm, minimum 0.2 mm, maximum 3.0 mm; radiograph 2: mean 0.8 mm, SD 0.5 mm, range 3.4 mm, minimum 0.12 mm, maximum 3.5 mm). Using descriptive statistics for 78 patients (one implant lost), mean changes for probing depth and inflammation were clinically insignificant. The average time for implant placement was 28 minutes (minimum 10 minutes, maximum 60 minutes, SD 13.1 minutes). Average depth from mucosal margin to bone was 3.3 mm (SD 0.7 mm, minimum 2 mm, maximum 5 mm, range 3 mm). Thirty-two implants were placed in maxillae and 47 in mandibles. Conclusions: The results of this study demonstrate that following diagnostic treatment planning criteria, flapless surgery using a minimally invasive technique is a predictable procedure. The benefits of this procedure are lessened surgical time; minimal changes in crestal bone levels, probing depth, and inflammation; perceived minimized bleeding; and lessened postoperative discomfort. [source] Development of heterodont dentition in house shrew (Suncus murinus)EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ORAL SCIENCES, Issue 6 2007Atsushi Yamanaka Mammalian heterodont dentition comprises incisors, canines, premolars, and molars. Although there has been intensive research, the patterning of these specific tooth types has not yet been elucidated. In order for the gene expression data to be linked with tooth type determination, it is first necessary to determine precisely the incisor-, canine-, premolar-, and molar-forming regions in the jaw primordia. To accomplish this, we studied dentition development in the house shrew (Suncus murinus), which has retained all the tooth types, using three-dimensional reconstructions from serial histological sections and the Sonic hedgehog (Shh) expression patterns. Before the appearance of morphological signs of odontogenesis, Shh expression localized to the presumptive tooth-forming regions, in which the mesial and distal expression domains corresponded to the incisor- and premolar-forming regions, respectively. The upper incisor region was found to extend across the boundary between the frontonasal and the maxillary processes. The canine-forming regions later appeared in the intermediate portions of the maxillary and the mandibular processes. The molar-forming regions later appeared distal to the initially demarcated tooth-forming regions by secondary extension of the distal ends. The demarcation visualized by the Shh expression pattern in the jaw primordia of the house shrew probably represents the basic developmental pattern of mammalian heterodont dentition. Vandana Abstract Background: It has been long known that the clinical appearance of healthy marginal periodontium differs from subject to subject and even among different tooth types. Many features are genetically determined; others seem to be influenced by tooth size, shape and position and biological phenomena such as gender, growth and age. Aim: The purpose of this study was to determine the thickness of facial gingiva among Indians and its association with age, gender and dental arch. Methods: The study group included 16 males and 16 females with an age range of 16,38 years. Gingival thickness was assessed in the maxillary and mandibular anteriors by transgingival probing. Results: It was observed that the younger age group had significantly thicker gingiva than that of the older age group. The gingiva was found to be thinner in females than males and, in the mandibular arch than the maxilla. Conclusion: In the present study, it was concluded that gingival thickness varies according to age, gender and dental arch. [source] Factors affecting human supragingival biofilm composition.JOURNAL OF PERIODONTAL RESEARCH, Issue 4 2009Background and Objective:, Little is known regarding the factors that affect the microbial composition of supragingival biofilms. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that tooth location affects the microbial composition of supragingival plaque beyond the effect due to plaque mass as reflected by total DNA probe count. Material and Methods:, Supragingival plaque samples were taken from the mesiobuccal aspect of each tooth in 187 subjects (n = 4745 samples). All samples were individually analyzed for their content of 40 bacterial species using checkerboard DNA,DNA hybridization. Significance of differences in mean species counts and proportions were determined among tooth surfaces and six tooth type categories: molars, bicuspids, incisors/canines in the mandible and maxilla separately using the Kruskal,Wallis test. Stepwise multiple linear regression was employed to examine the relationship between species proportions and total DNA probe count, tooth location, periodontal and smoking status, age and sex. Results:, All species differed significantly among tooth types and among the six tooth categories. Higher plaque levels were seen on molars and lower incisors. Some differences observed between tooth types could be partly explained by the level of plaque. Teeth with high plaque mass exhibited high levels of Capnocytophaga gingivalis, Actinomyces naeslundii genospecies 2, Campylobacter rectus and Campylobacter showae. However, certain species, such as Veillonella parvula and Streptococcus sanguinis, differed significantly at different tooth locations despite similarities in plaque mass. Twenty of the test species exhibited a significant association with tooth location after adjusting for total DNA probe count and subject level factors. Conclusion:, While plaque mass was associated with differences in proportions of many species in supragingival biofilms, tooth location also was strongly associated with species proportions in both univariate and multivariate analyses. Bunn Abstract Dental topographic analysis allows comparisons of variably worn teeth within and between species to infer relationships between dental form and diet in living primates, with implications for reconstructing feeding adaptations of fossil forms. Although analyses to date have been limited mainly to the M2s of a few primate taxa, these suggest that dental topographic analysis holds considerable promise. Still, larger samples including a greater range of species and different tooth types are needed to determine the potential of this approach. Here we examine dental topography of molar teeth of Cercocebus torquatus (n=48), Cercopithecus campbelli (n=50), Colobus polykomos (n=50), and Procolobus badius (n=50). This is the first such study of large samples of Old World monkeys, and the first to include analyses of both M1s and M2s. Average slope, relief, and surface angularity were computed and compared among tooth types, wear stages, and species. Results suggest that (1) data for M1s and M2s cannot be compared directly; (2) slope and relief decline with wear on M2s of all taxa, and M1s of the colobines, whereas angularity does not generally change except in the most worn specimens; and (3) folivorous colobines tend to have more sloping surfaces and more relief than do frugivorous cercopithecines, though angularity does not clearly separate taxa by diet. [source] Performance of shark teeth during puncture and draw: implications for the mechanics of cuttingBIOLOGICAL JOURNAL OF THE LINNEAN SOCIETY, Issue 2 2010LISA B. WHITENACK The performance of an organism's feeding apparatus has obvious implications for its fitness and survival. However, the majority of studies that focus on chondrichthyan feeding have largely ignored the role of teeth. Studying the functional morphology of shark teeth not only elucidates the biological role that teeth play in feeding, but also provides insight specifically into the evolution of shark feeding because teeth are often the only structures available in the fossil record. In the present study, we investigate the puncture and draw performance of three general categories of extant teeth, tearing-type, cutting-type, and cutting,clutching type, as well as three fossil morphologies, utilizing a universal testing system. Differences in puncturing performance occurred among different prey items, indicating that not all ,soft' prey items are alike. The majority of teeth were able to puncture different prey items, and differences in puncture performance also occurred among tooth types; however, few patterns emerged. In some cases, broader triangular teeth were less effective at puncturing than narrow-cusped teeth. There were no differences between the maximum draw forces and maximum puncture forces. Many of the shark teeth in the present study were not only able to perform draw and puncture equally well, but also many tooth morphologies were functionally equivalent to each other.
