Approach and Avoidance Temperament as Basic Dimensions of Personality

JOURNAL OF PERSONALITY, Issue 3 2010
Andrew J. Elliot
ABSTRACT This research comprises 6 studies designed to examine approach and avoidance temperament as basic dimensions of personality. In Study 1, we developed direct measures of approach and avoidance temperament. In Study 2, we demonstrated that the approach and avoidance temperament variables are not epiphenomena of response biases. In Study 3, we documented the test-retest stability of the temperament variables. In Study 4, we documented that approach and avoidance temperament are separate from other like-valenced variables and may be construed as the core of these variables. In Study 5, we documented that approach and avoidance temperament are separate from chronic promotion and prevention foci. In Study 6, we distinguished the temperament variables from achievement goal variables and documented the temperament variables as antecedents of achievement goals and achievement goals as proximal predictors of performance. Approach and avoidance temperament are discussed as an ideal foundation for a strong, enduring structure of personality. [source]

The influence of success and failure experiences on agency

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 3 2008
Andrea E. Abele
Agency is,besides communion,a basic dimension of traits. It can be specifically linked to behavioral outcomes, to status, mastery, self-esteem and to success. The present paper analyzes the situational malleability of agency. Two studies tested whether an individual's agency (but not communion) is situationally influenced by the experience of success versus failure at a task, as well as whether this effect is the same for men and women. Supporting our hypotheses, the induction of success versus failure experiences led to changes in agency that were independent of actual performance, independent of type of task (memorizing vs. face recognition), independent of induction methodology (easy vs. difficult task vs. manipulated performance feedback), and independent of self-esteem, initial level of agency and of the participants' gender. Communion was not influenced by this kind of experience. Implications for both the basic dimension of agency and for theories on gender and gender stereotypes are discussed. THE INTERNATIONAL DIMENSIONS OF NEUROETHICS

DEVELOPING WORLD BIOETHICS, Issue 2 2009
SOFIA LOMBERA
ABSTRACT Neuroethics, in its modern form, investigates the impact of brain science in four basic dimensions: the self, social policy, practice and discourse. In this study, we analyzed a set of 461 peer-reviewed articles with neuroethics content, published by authors from 32 countries. We analyzed the data for: (1) trends in the development of international neuroethics over time, and (2) how challenges at the intersection of ethics and neuroscience are viewed in countries that are considered developed by International Monetary Fund (IMF) standards, and in those that are developing. Our results demonstrate a steady increase in global participation in neuroethics from 1989 to 2005, characterized by an increase in numbers of articles published specifically on neuroethics, journals publishing these articles, and countries contributing to the literature. The focus from all countries was on the practice of brain science and the amelioration of neurological disease. Indicators of technology creation and diffusion in developing countries were specifically correlated with increases in publications concerning policy implications of brain science. Neuroethics is an international endeavor and, as such, should be sensitive to the impact that context has on acceptance and use of technological innovation. [source]

Eating behaviour: social influences in open community nuns

EUROPEAN EATING DISORDERS REVIEW, Issue 2 2003
Juan A. Guisado Macías
Abstract This article analysed the eating behaviour and the psychological discomfort in a sample of 44 religious women living in open communities. The Eating Attitudes Test-40 items, the Interview for the Diagnosis of Eating Disorders, the Bulimic Investigatory Test, and the revised Symptom Checklist-90 were used in order to assess the sample, and a factor analysis was performed. Three basic dimensions in the mental state were obtained: (1) Psychological discomfort, (2) Anorexic behaviour, and (3) Bulimic behaviour. Our results support the idea that people living in open communities share the social values regarding weight and body size, and show elevated levels of psychological discomfort strongly associated with symptoms of eating disturbances. Characterizing regional-scale variations in monthly and seasonal surface air temperature over Mexico

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CLIMATOLOGY, Issue 15 2004
Phil J. Englehart
Abstract Monthly and seasonal variations in surface air temperature (SAT) over Mexico have not received much research attention, a situation partly reflecting the lack of a coherent historical data set. As a step toward rectifying the data gap, this study outlines the development of a gridded monthly (2.5° × 2.5°lat.,long.) SAT data set (1940,2001) for Mexico. Using the data set, we investigate several basic dimensions of SAT variability. Our analysis demonstrates that much of the variability can be compactly expressed in terms of four regions which are physically plausible with respect to the country's climatology. Not surprisingly, persistence is an important component of regional SAT variability. Evaluated month to month, persistence tends to be greatest during the warm season, whereas across seasons there is evidence for persistence of warm season anomalies into the following cool season, behaviour that is consistent with positive feedback relationships between SAT, rainfall and land surface conditions. The regional time series display longer period variability that is partially linked to the state of the large-scale, slowly evolving climate modes of the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation and the Pacific decadal oscillation. Analyses are also presented to describe teleconnections between SAT and the El Niño,southern oscillation phenomena, and SAT and other large-scale atmospheric modes, such as the Pacific North American pattern and the North Atlantic oscillation. The Relationship Between Agricultural Cooperatives and the State in Sweden: The Legislative Process

ANNALS OF PUBLIC AND COOPERATIVE ECONOMICS, Issue 1 2000
M. Fregidou-Malama
On the basis of interviews made with twenty seven leading personalities from cooperatives and government institutions, it is identified, that two main dimensions, the economic and the social, are emphasized by different interest groups involved in the cooperative process. It is also indicated that the relationship between state and cooperatives, in varying degrees, combines these two basic dimensions over time in the actual cooperative law and thus focuses on one dimension, neglecting the other. Relationship is meant to anchor the economic and the social values of cooperatives in the political process, and enable them to be accepted. In conclusion, it can be argued that the state can influence the character of cooperatives by selecting specific actors in specific processes. For this reason, in order to secure a sustainable autonomous development of cooperatives, it is important to synthesize and take into consideration different interests in future relations between cooperatives and the state. Space and Time in the Child's Mind: Evidence for a Cross-Dimensional Asymmetry

COGNITIVE SCIENCE - A MULTIDISCIPLINARY JOURNAL, Issue 3 2010
Daniel Casasanto
Abstract What is the relationship between space and time in the human mind? Studies in adults show an asymmetric relationship between mental representations of these basic dimensions of experience: Representations of time depend on space more than representations of space depend on time. Here we investigated the relationship between space and time in the developing mind. Native Greek-speaking children watched movies of two animals traveling along parallel paths for different distances or durations and judged the spatial and temporal aspects of these events (e.g., Which animal went for a longer distance, or a longer time?). Results showed a reliable cross-dimensional asymmetry. For the same stimuli, spatial information influenced temporal judgments more than temporal information influenced spatial judgments. This pattern was robust to variations in the age of the participants and the type of linguistic framing used to elicit responses. This finding demonstrates a continuity between space-time representations in children and adults, and informs theories of analog magnitude representation. [source]
