Interspecific competition among urban cockroach species

Abstract The aim of this study was to quantify and to compare the effects of intraspecific and interspecific competition among pairs of urban cockroaches [Blatta orientalis L., Periplaneta americana (L.), and Periplaneta australasiae Fabricius (Dictyoptera: Blattodea)] in relation to the limitation of resources such as shelter or food. Our approach was to assess whether the presence of one species affected the resource exploitation of another. A reduction in access to shelters or to food for one species revealed dominant/subordination relationships among species and induced spatial segregation in shelters and temporal segregation during food exploitation. The fragmentation of available resources facilitated spatial segregation and the access of more individuals of the subordinate species. Individuals of each species were aware of the presence of non-conspecifics. The outcome of interspecific competition under laboratory conditions should help us to understand how segregated spatial distributions occur under natural conditions in urban areas. [source]


Sympatry with the devil: reproductive interference could hamper species coexistence

Summary 1As species are often considered discrete natural units, interspecific sexual interactions are often disregarded as potential factors determining community composition. Nevertheless reproductive interference, ranging from signal jamming to hybridization, can have significant costs for species sharing similar signal channels. 2We combined laboratory and field experiments to test whether the coexistence of two congeneric ground-hopper species with overlapping ranges might be influenced by sexual interactions. 3In the laboratory experiment the number of conspecific copulations of Tetrix ceperoi decreased substantially in the presence of Tetrix subulata. Males of T. ceperoi performed more mating attempts with heterospecific females, whereas females of T. subulata rejected these heterospecific approaches more often than those of conspecifics. Although no heterospecific matings occurred in the laboratory, the reproductive success of T. ceperoi was reduced substantially in field experiments. Negative effects on T. subulata were found only at high densities. 4Our results suggest that reproductive interference could have similar consequences as competition, such as demographic displacement of one species (,sexual exclusion'). As reproductive interference should be selected against, it may also drive the evolution of signals (reproductive character displacement) or promote habitat, spatial or temporal segregation. Chemical mediation and niche partitioning in non-pollinating fig-wasp communities

Summary 1The parasitic chalcidoid wasps associated with the species-specific and obligatory pollination mutualisms between Ficus spp. and their agaonid wasp pollinators provide a good model to study the functional organization of communities. 2However, communities of non-pollinating fig wasps (NPFWs) remain little characterized, and their functioning and evolutionary dynamics are still poorly understood. 3We studied the communities of NPFWs associated with the monoecious F. racemosa and the dioecious F. hispida. Associated with these two fig species are a total of seven wasp species belonging to three genera. These species present contrasts in life history traits and in timing of oviposition. The species studied are thus broadly representative of the communities of NPFWs associated specifically with fig,pollinator mutualisms. 4In our study systems, there is temporal segregation of oviposition time among members of NPFW communities. 5We tested the role of volatile chemicals in the attraction of NPFWs associated with these two fig species, and tried to determine if chemical mediation can explain the organization of the communities. 6We conducted odour choice tests using a Y-tube olfactometer. All the NPFWs studied were shown to use volatile chemicals produced by the fig to locate their host. Furthermore, the signals used by each species depended on the phenological stage of the fig they exploit. 7Results demonstrated that the pattern of oviposition results from the utilization of volatile signals produced by figs that vary in their composition at different stages of fig development. Thus, chemical mediation allows resource partitioning in the NPFW communities associated with fig,pollinator mutualisms, and suggests hypotheses to explain coexistence in other parasite communities. Seasonality in adult flight activity of two neuroptera assemblages of southern Mali

Abstract The seasonality of insect assemblages in Africa is poorly investigated. To provide information on the relationships between climate and insect assemblages in the Sudanian region, strongly affected by climate change, we studied Myrmeleontidae and Ascalaphidae assemblages (Insecta: Neuroptera) for 7 and 5 consecutive years respectively in southern Mali. To make the species inventory as exhaustive as possible, we performed weekly sampling by netting and light trapping. For both assemblages, results showed very similar patterns of variation in species diversity throughout the year. Adults of Myrmeleontidae and Ascalaphidae were active all year, and the species succession was influenced by a strong temporal segregation. Species diversity peaked at the end of the rainy season and surprisingly during the dry season. Principal component analysis of the climatic factors followed by co-inertia analysis applied to two data sets, one comprising climatic factors and the other reporting presence/absence of species, showed a good association between the annual trend of climatic factors and the species diversity. But no well defined species grouping was clearly linked to a particular period of the year. This tight association between climate and species composition suggests that even small climate changes could modify significantly species assemblage characteristics. Résumé La saisonnalité des assemblages d'insectes en Afrique est peu étudiée. Pour fournir des informations sur les relations entre le climat et les assemblages d'insectes dans la région soudanienne, très affectée par les changements climatiques, les assemblages de Myrmeleontidae et d'Ascalaphidae (Insectes: Neuroptera) ont étéétudiés respectivement pendant sept et cinq années consécutives dans le sud du Mali. Pour que l'inventaire des espèces soit le plus complet possible, on a réalisé des échantillonnages hebdomadaires au moyen de filets et de pièges lumineux. Pour les deux assemblages, les résultats ont montré des schémas de variation de la diversité des espèces très comparables tout au long de l'année. Il y avait des adultes de Myrmeleontidae et d'Ascalaphidae actifs toute l'année, et la succession des espèces était influencée par une ségrégation temporelle très forte. La diversité des espèces connaissait un pic à la fin de la saison des pluies et, étonnamment, pendant la saison sèche. L'analyse en composantes principales des facteurs climatiques suivie par une analyse de co-inertie appliquée à deux jeux de données, un comprenant des facteurs climatiques, l'autre rapportant la présence/l'absence d'espèces, a montré une bonne association entre la tendance annuelle des facteurs climatiques et la diversité des espèces. Mais aucun groupement bien défini d'espèces n'était clairement liéà une période particulière de l'année. Cette étroite association entre le climat et la composition des espèces suggère que même de petits changements climatiques pourraient modifier significativement les caractéristiques de l'assemblage d'espèces.
