    TEMPORAL PATTERN OF AFRICANIZATION IN A FERAL HONEYBEE POPULATION FROM TEXAS INFERRED FROM MITOCHONDRIAL DNA

    Abstract The invasion of Africanized honeybees (Apis mellifera L.) in the Americas provides a window of opportunity to study the dynamics of secondary contact of subspecies of bees that evolved in allopatry in ecologically distinctive habitats of the Old World. We report here the results of an 11-year mitochondrial DNA survey of a feral honeybee population from southern United States (Texas). The mitochondrial haplotype (mitotype) frequencies changed radically during the 11-year study period. Prior to immigration of Africanized honeybees, the resident population was essentially of eastern and western European maternal ancestry. Three years after detection of the first Africanized swarm there was a mitotype turnover in the population from predominantly eastern European to predominantly A. m. scutellata (ancestor of Africanized honeybees). This remarkable change in the mitotype composition coincided with arrival of the parasitic mite Varroa destructor, which was likely responsible for severe losses experienced by colonies of European ancestry. From 1997 onward the population stabilized with most colonies of A. m. scutellata maternal origin. [source]


    Field Cricket Species Differences in the Temporal Patterns of Long-Distance Mate Attraction Signals

    We quantify variation in the temporal components of long-distance mate attraction signals produced by a North American field cricket, Gryllus rubens Scudder. Total signaling time, trilling bout duration, and hourly bout number exhibit high repeatability within individuals. Extensive variation exists across individuals: some males never signal while others signal for several hours each night; of the signalers, average trilling bout duration ranges from <1 min to well over an hour; some males produce only one trilling bout in an evening while others produce three bouts every 2 h. Body size, weight, wing morphology, and condition do not appear to explain the variation. We compare the temporal signaling components of G. rubens with its sister species, G. texensis. Although G. rubens produce slightly more trills per hour with slightly shorter trilling bout durations, the temporal components of these long-distance mate attraction signals are surprisingly similar across species.     Temporal Patterns of Atrial Arrhythmia Recurrences in Patients with Implantable Defibrillators: Implications for Assessing Antiarrhythmic Therapies

    Temporal Patterns of Atrial Arrhythmias.Introduction: The statistical measures commonly used to assess therapies for recurrent atrial arrhythmias (such as time to first recurrence) often assume a uniformly random pattern of arrhythmic events over time. However, the true temporal pattern of atrial arrhythmia recurrences is unknown. The aim of this study was to use linear and nonlinear analyses to characterize the temporal pattern of atrial arrhythmia recurrences in patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators. Methods and Results: The time and date of atrial tachyarrhythmias recorded in 65 patients with combined atrial and ventricular defibrillators were used to construct a probability density function (PDF) and a model of a Poisson distribution of arrhythmic events for each patient. Average patient age was 66 ± 10 years and follow-up was 7.8 ± 4.8 months. A total of 10,759 episodes of atrial tachyarrhythmias were analyzed (range 43 to 618 episodes per patient). The PDF fit a power law distribution for all 65 patients, with an average r2= 0.89 ± 0.08. The PDF distribution differed significantly from the model Poisson distribution in 47 of 65 patients (P = 0.0002). Differences from the Poisson distribution were noted for patients both taking (30/43 patients; P < 0.015) and not taking (17/22 patients; P < 0.017) antiarrhythmic drugs. Median time between atrial arrhythmia detections for all 65 patients was 10.8 minutes. Conclusion: In implantable cardioverter defibrillator patients, the temporal pattern of frequent recurrences of atrial tachyarrhythmias usually is characterized by a power law distribution. The unique statistical properties of this type of distribution should be considered in designing outcome measures for treatment of atrial tachyarrhythmias. [source]

    Bladder smooth muscle cell phenotypic changes and implication of expression of contractile proteins (especially caldesmon) in rats after partial outlet obstruction

    Abstract Background: The purpose of the present study was to investigate morphological changes in bladder smooth muscle of rats with partial outlet obstruction. We investigated smooth muscle cell phenotypic changes and implication of synthetic phenotype in contractility decrease and bladder compliance after bladder outlet obstruction. Methods: Partial bladder outlet obstruction was introduced in female rats. Bladder were removed at 1, 3, 6, 10 and 20 weeks after the obstruction. Temporal pattern of changes in bladder mass, light microscopic pathogenesis and phenotypic expression of the bladder smooth muscle cells in the electron micrographs were investigated. Expression of contractile protein was also investigated by the immunoblotting method. Results: Marked increase in bladder mass with marked thickening of smooth muscle layer was observed at 1 week after obstruction. The ratio of myocytes exhibiting contractile and synthetic phenotypes was almost constant until 6 weeks after the obstruction, but thereafter, synthetic phenotypes gradually increased and the ratio (synthetic/contractile phenotype) was 1.5-fold at 20 weeks after the obstruction. Caldesmon was most markedly expressed after the obstruction among contractile proteins examined by the immunoblotting method. Conclusion: Phenotypic changes were confirmed in bladder smooth muscle, and the decrease of the ratio of contractile phenotype was observed after long-term obstruction of the bladder outlet. Among the contractile proteins in the bladder smooth muscle cell, caldesmon was considered a reliable marker for predicting the pathogenetic conditions of the bladder. [source]


    Temporal pattern of feeding activity in the firebug Pyrrhocoris apterus and its relation to sex, wing dimorphism and physiological state of adults

    Abstract The present study tested whether the pattern of feeding activity in the firebug Pyrrhocoris apterus (L.) is sex- and wing morph-related, diurnal or nocturnal, as well as whether the feeding rhythm persists in constant darkness. Temporal patterns of feeding activity are analysed in macropterous and brachypterous adults reared under long-day (LD 18 : 6 h) and short-day (LD 12 : 12 h) photoperiods, and in adults transferred to constant darkness. In females, the total feeding activity is highest in long-day reproductively active brachypters, intermediate in short-day diapausing brachypters, and lowest in macropters; the differences among males are substantially smaller. Although the total feeding activity of macropterous males is higher than in macropterous females, no sex-related differences are found in feeding activity of diapausing and reproductively active brachypters. The frequency of feeding exhibits sex-related differences, with obviously higher values in males. Mean feeding periods of macropterous and reproductively active brachypterous males are shorter than in females of the same wing morph. Mean interfeeding periods are longest in macropters, intermediate in diapausing brachypters, and shortest in reproductively active brachypters, and always lower in males than in females. The study shows that the feeding activity of P. apterus adults is age-, sex- and wing morph-related, and exhibits a diurnal pattern, except in reproductively active brachypterous females. The latter do not express a clear diurnal rhythm of feeding, presumably because of interactions with cycles of egg development and oviposition. The persistence of diurnal rhythm of feeding activity in short-day brachypterous females transferred to constant darkness indicates an endogeneity of this rhythm in P. apterus. [source]


    Emergence of larval yellow perch, Perca flavescens, in South Dakota lakes: potential implications for recruitment

    Abstract, Temporal patterns in length frequency distributions and hatch dates were described for larval yellow perch, Perca flavescens (Mitchill), captured in surface ichthyoplankton trawls from late April to mid-June 2000 to 2002 in six South Dakota, USA lakes. Fewer than 15 larval yellow perch were collected in four of six lakes during 2002, suggesting that in some cases factors prior to, during or immediately after hatching likely play a critical role in the perch recruitment process. When larval yellow perch were encountered in larger numbers, temporal trends in total length (TL) frequencies indicated that only a single cohort was produced annually in each lake. Most yellow perch in these lakes hatched between 29 April and 17 May, and most hatching occurred during 5,11 days each year. Larval TL was not related to hatch date. The apparent prevalence of relatively short hatch periods in these yellow perch populations probably increases the risk of catastrophic losses resulting from periods of poor environmental conditions.     Clustering of Ventricular Tachyarrhythmias in Heart Failure Patients Implanted with a Biventricular Cardioverter Defibrillator

    Background: Temporal patterns of ventricular tachyarrhythmia (VT/VF) have been studied only in patients who have received implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD) for secondary prevention of sudden death, and mainly in ischemic patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate VT/VF recurrence patterns in heart failure (HF) patients with biventricular ICD and to stratify results according to HF etiology and ICD indication. Methods and Results: We studied 421 patients (91% male, 66 ± 9 years). HF etiology was ischemic in 292 patients and nonischemic in 129. ICD indication was for primary prevention in 227 patients and secondary prevention in 194. Baseline left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was 26 ± 7%, QRS duration 168 ± 32 msec, and NYHA class 2.9 ± 0.6. In a follow-up of 19 ± 11 months, 1,838 VT/VF in 110 patients were appropriately detected. In 59 patients who had ,4 episodes, we tried to determine whether VT/VF occurred randomly or rather tended to cluster by fitting the frequency distribution of tachycardia interdetection intervals with exponential functions: VT/VF clusters were observed in 46 patients (78% of the subgroup of patients with ,4 episodes and 11% of the overall population). On multivariate logistic analysis, VT/VF clusters were significantly (P < 0.01) associated with ICD indication for secondary prevention (odds ratio [OR]= 3.12; confidence interval [CI]= 1.56,6.92), nonischemic HF etiology (OR = 4.34; CI = 2.02,9.32), monomorphic VT (OR = 4.96; CI = 2.28,10.8), and LVEF < 25% (OR = 3.34; CI = 1.54,7.23). Cardiovascular hospitalizations and deaths occurred more frequently in cluster (21/46 [46%]) than in noncluster patients (63/375 (17%), P < 0.0001). Conclusions: In HF patients with biventricular ICDs, VT/VF clusters may be regarded as the epiphenomenon of HF deterioration or as a marker of suboptimal response to cardiac resynchronization therapy.     Temporal patterns of growth in larval cohorts of the Japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus in a coastal nursery area

    Growth patterns of larval sardine Sardinops melanostictus were studied in a coastal nursery area, in southern Japan for four monthly hatch cohorts of larvae (November, December, January and February) for the 2003,2004 and 2004,2005 seasons. Laird,Gompertz models were fitted to each cohort using both total length (LT)-at-age at capture and mean LT -at-age data derived from backcalculations. In both approaches, the absolute daily growth rates (GR) and absolute daily growth rates at the inflection point (GXO) were estimated. In parallel, individual growth rates (GI) were derived from backcalculated LT (LB). Growth showed the following general common patterns irrespective of hatch month, season and methods: (1) significant Laird,Gompertz fits, (2) asymptotic growth, (3) a decrease in GR after the inflexion point, except for February for the 2003,2004 season that showed an apparent constant growth pattern, (4) six in eight cohorts showed GXO ranging from 0·8 to 1·2 mm day,1 and (5) a decreasing tendency of GI from 1·75 to 0·24 mm day,1, from first feeding through the first month of larval life. The contrasting pattern between the 2003,2004 and the 2004,2005 seasons were: (1) allometric v. logarithmic (ln) LT and otolith radius relationships, (2) low GXOv. high GXO, (3) high GRv. low GR when growth turned asymptotic, (4) low GXOv. high GXO when monthly hatch cohorts were combined and (5) LB and GI not differing among monthly hatch cohorts. The differences in growth patterns and growth rates between seasons seemed to be linked to the influx of warmer and oligotrophic waters of the Kuroshio Current that triggered an increase of 3° C in the coastal area for the 2003,2004 seasons. In the overall context, however, the high GXO, within cohorts and seasons reported in the current study, suggests that either sea surface temperature (SST) or food availability, or both are in the optimal range of preferences for S. melanostictus larvae. Consequently, nearshore coastal areas seem to be playing an important role as a nursery area for the larval stage of this species. [source]


    Temporal patterns of breeding and recruitment in Nerophis lumbriciformis(Pisces; Syngnathidae) related to seawater temperatures

    The breeding season of Nerophis lumbriciformis, a cold water pipefish, was positively correlated with seawater temperatures <15·5° C, whilst recruitment occurred at the end of the upwelling season, when seawater temperature attained its maximum values. The observed alterations in seawater temperatures, with steady year-round increases, and the consequent alteration of the upwelling regime, may have dramatic consequences in the maintenance of N. lumbriciformis populations, by reducing the breeding period and simultaneously contributing to the transport of pelagic larvae northwards due to specific sea currents that occur outside the upwelling season.     Temporal patterns of genetic variation across a 9-year-old aerial seed bank of the shrub Banksia hookeriana (Proteaceae)

    Abstract The pattern of accumulation of genetic variation over time in seed banks is poorly understood. We examined the genetic structure of the aerial seed bank of Banksia hookeriana within a single 15-year-old population in fire-prone southwestern Australia, and compared genetic variation between adults and each year of a 9-year-old seed bank using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP). B. hookeriana is well suited to the study of seed bank dynamics due to the canopy storage of its seeds, and because each annual crop can be identified. A total of 304 seeds from nine crop years and five maternal plants were genotyped, along with 113 plants from the adult population. Genetic variation, as assessed by the proportion of polymorphic markers (Pp) and Shannon's index (I), increased slightly within the seed bank over time, while gene diversity (Hj), did not change. Pp, I, and Hj all indicated that genetic variation within the seed bank quickly approached the maximal level detected. Analysis of molecular variance revealed that less than 4% of variation could be accounted for by variation among seeds produced in different years, whereas there was greater differentiation among maternal plants (12.7%), and among individual seeds produced by different maternal plants (83.4%). With increasing population age, offspring generated each year were slightly more outbred, as indicated by an increase in the mean number of nonmaternal markers per offspring. There were no significant differences for Hj or I between adults and the seed bank. Viability of seeds decreased with age, such that the viability of 9-year-old seeds was half that of 2-year-old seeds. These results suggest that variable fire frequencies have only limited potential to influence the amount of genetic variation stored within the seed bank of B. hookeriana. [source]

    Temporal patterns and quantification of excretion of Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis in sheep with Johne's disease

    Objectives To determine the frequency of excretion of Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis in Merino sheep with Johne's disease and to quantify excretion in a group of Merino sheep. Design A pen and laboratory experiment Procedure Seven sheep selected from an affected flock on the basis of acid-fast bacilli in the sheep's faeces were housed and total daily faecal output was collected, weighed and subjected to culture for M avium subsp paratuberculosis. An end-point titration method was used to enumerate viable M avium subsp paratuberculosis in a 15 day pooled sample from five sheep that had acid-fast bacilli in their faeces while housed. Results Four sheep with subclinical multibacillary Johne's disease excreted M avium subsp paratuberculosis each day for 11 days of cultural observation. A further three sheep were intermittent excreters but lacked other evidence of infection with M avium subsp paratuberculosis. The average number of viable bacteria excreted was 1.09 × 108 per gram of faeces while total daily excretion was 8.36 × 1010 viable M avium subsp paratuberculosis per sheep. Examination of faecal smears stained with Ziehl Neelsen was an unreliable means of assessing daily excretion in individual animals except in those with severe lesions. Conclusion Excretion of M avium subsp paratuberculosis in Merino sheep with multibacillary Johne's disease occurred daily, proving that environmental contamination can be continuous on farms with endemic ovine Johne's disease. Faecal culture is a useful method for detecting infection as it does not appear to be affected by the timing of collection of a sample from sheep with multibacillary disease however, to maximise the sensitivity of disease surveillance using faecal culture, sampling rates should be adjusted to take account of the proportions of multibacillary and paucibacillary cases.     Temporal patterns of geographic parthenogenesis in a freshwater snail

    Geographic parthenogenesis describes the observation that parthenogenetic organisms tend to occupy environments different from those of their close, sexually reproducing relatives. These environments are often described as extreme or disturbed habitats. We examined whether patterns of geographical parthenogenesis persist over time, by conducting a 3-year life-history survey and comparing two very proximate habitats of the freshwater snail Melanoides tuberculata: Nahal Arugot, a desert stream naturally disturbed by flash floods, and Or Ilan, a stable freshwater pond. Both sites occur in a xeric environment and are subject to otherwise similar biotic (e.g. parasites, predators) and climatic conditions. In the stable habitat, male frequencies and snail densities were significantly higher than in the disturbed one, whereas infection levels, mean embryo counts, and water temperatures were similar at both sites. Additionally, male frequencies declined after density decreased, thereby providing evidence for geographical parthenogenesis via reproductive assurance. Infection prevalence was very low regardless of reproduction mode. Although further genetic work is required, the apparent metapopulation structure of M. tuberculata in the Judean desert may be suitable for evaluating other possible explanations of geographical parthenogenesis. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 91, 711,718.     The changing face of food hypersensitivity in an Asian community

    Summary Background Food allergy seems to be increasing in Asia as well as world-wide. Our aim was to characterize food protein sensitization patterns in a population of Asian children with possible food allergy. Methods Children presenting to our allergy clinic over 3 years with symptomatic allergic disease and at least one specific food allergen sensitization documented on skin prick testing were included in the analysis. Results Two hundred and twenty-seven patients fulfilled inclusion criteria. Ninety (40%) of the positive skin tests were positive to egg, 87 (39%) to shellfish, 62 (27.3%) to peanut, 30 (13.2%) to fish, 27 (11.8%) to cow's milk, 21 (9.3%) to sesame, 13 (3.7%) to wheat and eight (3.2%) to soy. Peanut sensitization was the third most common sensitizing allergen, and seen mostly in young atopic children with multiple food hypersensitivities and a family history of atopic dermatitis. The median reported age of first exposure to fish and shellfish was 6 and 12 months, respectively. The mean age at presentation of children with shellfish hypersensitivity was at 6.7 years of age. The likelihood of shellfish sensitization was increased in children with concomitant sensitization to cockroaches. Conclusions In contrast to previously reported low peanut allergy rates in Asia, in our review, peanut sensitization is present in 27% (62/227) of food-allergic children, mostly in patients with multiple food protein sensitizations. Temporal patterns of first exposure of infants to fish and shellfish are unique to the Asian diet. Shellfish are a major sensitizing food source in Asian children, especially in allergic rhinitis patients sensitized to cockroaches. [source]


    Potential roles for BMP and Pax genes in the development of iris smooth muscle

    Abstract The embryonic optic cup generates four types of tissue: neural retina, pigmented epithelium, ciliary epithelium, and iris smooth muscle. Remarkably little attention has focused on the development of the iris smooth muscle since Lewis ([1903] J. Am. Anat. 2:405,416) described its origins from the anterior rim of the optic cup neuroepithelium. As an initial step toward understanding iris smooth muscle development, I first determined the spatial and temporal pattern of the development of the iris smooth muscle in the chick by using the HNK1 antibody, which labels developing iris smooth muscle. HNK1 labeling shows that iris smooth muscle development is correlated in time and space with the development of the ciliary epithelial folds. Second, because neural crest is the only other neural tissue that has been shown to generate smooth muscle (Le Lievre and Le Douarin [1975] J. Embryo. Exp. Morphol. 34:125,154), I sought to determine whether iris smooth muscle development shares similarities with neural crest development. Two members of the BMP superfamily, BMP4 and BMP7, which may regulate neural crest development, are highly expressed by cells at the site of iris smooth muscle generation. Third, because humans and mice that are heterozygous for Pax6 mutations have no irides (Hill et al. [1991] Nature 354:522,525; Hanson et al. [1994] Nat. Genet. 6:168,173), I determined the expression of Pax6. I also examined the expression of Pax3 in the developing anterior optic cup. The developing iris smooth muscle coexpresses Pax6 and Pax3.     Soil detachment and transport on field- and laboratory-scale interrill areas: erosion processes and the size-selectivity of eroded sediment

    Abstract Field- and laboratory-scale rainfall simulation experiments were carried out in an investigation of the temporal variability of erosion processes on interrill areas, and the effects of such variation upon sediment size characteristics. Poorly aggregated sandy soils from the semi-arid environment of Senegal, West Africa, were used on both a 40 m2 field plot and a 0·25 m2 laboratory plot; rainfall intensity for all experiments was 70 mm h,1 with a duration of 1 to 2 hours. Time-series measurements were made of the quantity and the size distribution of eroded material: these permitted an estimate of the changing temporal balance between the main erosion processes (splash and wash). Results from both spatial scales showed a similar temporal pattern of runoff generation and sediment concentration. For both spatial scales, the dominant erosional process was detachment by raindrops; this resulted in a dynamic evolution of the soil surface under raindrop impact, with the rapid formation of a sieving crust followed by an erosion crust. However, a clear difference was observed between the two scales regarding the size of particles detached by both splash and wash. While all measured values were lower than the mean weight diameter (MWD) value of the original soil (mean 0·32 mm), demonstrating the size-selective nature of wash and splash processes, the MWD values of washed and splashed particles at the field scale ranged from 0·08 to 0·16 mm and from 0·12 to 0·30 mm respectively, whereas the MWD values of washed and splashed particles at the laboratory scale ranged from 0·13 to 0·29 mm and from 0·21 to 0·32 mm respectively. Thus only at the field scale were the soil particles detached by splash notably coarser than those transported by wash. This suggests a transport-limited erosion process at the field scale. Differences were also observed between the dynamics of the soil loss by wash at the two scales, since results showed wider scatter in the field compared to the laboratory experiments.     Odor vapor pressure and quality modulate local field potential oscillatory patterns in the olfactory bulb of the anesthetized rat

    Abstract A central question in chemical senses is the way that odorant molecules are represented in the brain. To date, many studies, when taken together, suggest that structural features of the molecules are represented through a spatio-temporal pattern of activation in the olfactory bulb (OB), in both glomerular and mitral cell layers. Mitral/tufted cells interact with a large population of inhibitory interneurons resulting in a temporal patterning of bulbar local field potential (LFP) activity. We investigated the possibility that molecular features could determine the temporal pattern of LFP oscillatory activity in the OB. For this purpose, we recorded the LFPs in the OB of urethane-anesthetized, freely breathing rats in response to series of aliphatic odorants varying subtly in carbon-chain length or functional group. In concordance with our previous reports, we found that odors evoked oscillatory activity in the LFP signal in both the beta and gamma frequency bands. Analysis of LFP oscillations revealed that, although molecular features have almost no influence on the intrinsic characteristics of LFP oscillations, they influence the temporal patterning of bulbar oscillations. Alcohol family odors rarely evoke gamma oscillations, whereas ester family odors rather induce oscillatory patterns showing beta/gamma alternation. Moreover, for molecules with the same functional group, the probability of gamma occurrence is correlated to the vapor pressure of the odor. The significance of the relation between odorant features and oscillatory regimes along with their functional relevance are discussed. [source]


    A past and a future for diversification on farms?

    Some evidence from large-scale, commercial farms in South East England
    Abstract Diversification has been identified as a common response to the agricultural crisis of the 1980s and to the changing ethos of agricultural policy in the closing decade of the twentieth century. In particular, farmers operating large-scale farms have been prominent in adopting this approach, just as they were innovative across a range of farming practices in the expansion and modernisation of their agricultural production in earlier decades. Can we identify serial diversifiers within this sector of the farming community, who are disposed to react in an entrepreneurial fashion to the changing fortunes of agriculture? The paper draws on results from a survey of large-scale commercial farmers in South East England and, by examining the sequence in which various forms of diversification were adopted, identifies a temporal pattern as farmers responded to the fluctuating fortunes of the agricultural industry over the past thirty years. But has the potential for diversification been exhausted? The paper also considers future prospects for diversification within the large-scale, commercially oriented sector of the agricultural industry. [source]


    Multiyear to daily radon variability from continuous monitoring at the Amram tunnel, southern Israel

    SUMMARY Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive noble gas generated within mineral grains of uranium bearing rocks by alpha decay from radium. The Amram tunnel (A. Bloch Geophysical Observatory) is a particularly suitable location for the investigation of radon variability. Located in the arid environment of the Arava desert, near Elat, the 170 m tunnel that constitutes the observatory enables radon monitoring in a desert environment and under fairly stable environmental conditions. The analysis of the temporal variability of continuous measurements of radon and environmental parameters at the Amram tunnel over a period of several years shows a complex temporal pattern characterized by non-stationary and multiscale features. Radon concentrations exhibit multiyear variability in the form of a increasing trend of ,1000 Bq m,3 yr,1 in the mean and much larger trends up to ,2500 Bq m,3 yr,1 in the maximum radon levels. Radon concentrations also display strong seasonal patterns, with maxima in summer and minima in winter, ranging from 2.5 kBq m,3 in winter to 35 kBq m,3 in summer. Intraseasonal variability is characterized by very large radon anomalies, with sharp increases of more than 20 kBq m,3 relative to the base level, that occur in spring and summer and last for several days. Daily periodic variability with maxima around midnight appears also in spring and summer, being absent in the cold months. Radon variability at seasonal, intraseasonal and daily timescales is associated with the air temperature outside the tunnel, specifically the temperature gradient between the external environment and the more stable environment inside the tunnel where the measurements are performed.     24-Hour Distribution of Migraine Attacks

    Background., It is a widespread opinion that migraine attacks arise more frequently in the morning and that circadian rhythms may be responsible for the temporal pattern in migraine. However, only one small prospective study has previously been published on this topic. Objective., To investigate circadian variation in migraine. Method., Eighty-nine females in fertile age who had participated in a previous questionnaire-based study volunteered to prospectively record in detail every migraine attack for 12 consecutive months. We reviewed all diary entries covering the period from March 2004 through April 2005, and did time-series analysis. Results., Fifty-eight patients had complete recordings over the 12 months and 26 completed the diaries for 1,11 months. Three patients were excluded due to missing data and 2 patients were excluded due to chronic migraine or medication-overuse headache. A total of 2314 attacks were experienced, in average 27.5 per patient (range 1,75). By fitting a sine curve to the data there was a harmonic trend with a peak around 13.40 and the peak/low ratio was 25.6 (95% CI: 8.3,78.6). Conclusion., The main finding in our study is that migraine attacks tend to recur in a harmonic 24-hour cyclic manner with a peak around the middle of the day and that there is no difference between migraine with aura and migraine without aura regarding this.     Modeling the hepatitis C virus epidemic in France using the temporal pattern of hepatocellular carcinoma deaths

    Deuffic et al. developed a compartmentalized model that characterized the evolution and spread of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) within France. There were various parameters defining the age- and sex-dependent transition probabilities between chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis in need of determination to completely specify their model. These were estimated by means of a weighted least-squares procedure that was executed numerically. The objective function used was based on the distribution of the age at death from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) rather than the temporal pattern of deaths due to HCC from 1979 to 1995. In this report, we investigate the impact of using an objective function based on the temporal pattern of deaths. We show that the dynamics of the epidemic can be quite different, in particular, short-term prediction of HCC deaths by HCV infection and times to death from onset of disease. [source]


    Water fluxes at a fluctuating water table and groundwater contributions to wheat water use in the lower Yellow River flood plain, China

    Abstract Capillary upflow from and deep percolation to a water table may be important in crop water supply in irrigated areas of the lower Yellow River flood plain, north China. These fluxes at the water table and the variations of the capillary upflow in relation to crop evapotranspiration need to be investigated to quantify the effect of a water table on soil water balance and to improve agricultural water management. A large weighing lysimeter was used to determine daily crop evapotranspiration, daily capillary upflow from and daily percolation to a fluctuating water table during a rotation period with wheat growing in a dry season and maize in a rainy season. The water table depth varied in the range 0·7,2·3 m during the maize growth period and 1·6,2·4 m during the wheat growth period. Experimental results showed that the capillary upflow and the percolation were significant components of the soil water balance. Three distinctly different phases for the water fluxes at the water table were observed through the rotation period: water downward period, the period of no or small water fluxes, and water upward period. It implied that the temporal pattern of these water fluxes at the water table was intimately associated with the temporal distribution of rainfall through the rotation period. An empirical equation was determined to estimate the capillary upflow in relation to wheat evapotranspiration and root zone soil water content for local irrigation scheduling. Coupled with the FAO-Penman,Monteith equation, the equation offers a fast and low cost solution to assess the effect of capillary upflow from a water table on wheat water use.     Temporal variability of phytoplankton in a salt wedge estuary, the Swan,Canning Estuary, Western Australia

    Abstract The temporal cycles of variation in salinity, temperature and river flow in the Swan,Canning Estuary plus rainfall in the vicinity are examined. A ,normal' pattern is defined for rainfall and river flow based on long-term median monthly values from available historical data. Long-term monthly median rainfall and median monthly river flow were highly correlated. Deviations from the ,normal' patterns of rainfall and river flow are documented. Three years of detailed data on the temporal distribution of the algal biomass and phytoplankton community composition from the Swan,Canning Estuary are presented and discussed. Significant interannual variability in the phytoplankton biomass was observed with 1996 having a significantly lower median chlorophyll a concentration than 1995 or 1997. Different years also had pronounced differences in the timing, persistence and occurrence of algal blooms. Links with, and between, rainfall, river flow, nutrient concentrations and phytoplankton biomass are made by careful examination of the temporal patterns. Deviations from the proposed ,normal' temporal pattern of physical and chemical environmental factors relevant to the growth of phytoplankton biomass are assessed. Deviations from ,normal' rainfall and river flow, depending upon their timing and intensity, appear to be associated with occurrence of algal blooms. For example, the lack of a dinoflagellate bloom in December 1996 or January 1997 appears to be associated with a wetter than normal spring. Based upon the observed data, published reports and basic principles of algal ecology a set of predicted responses to variation in the major environmental variables (rainfall and river flow) are tabulated.     Behavior and physiology of mechanoreception: separating signal and noise

    Abstract The mechanosensory lateral line is found in all aquatic fish and amphibians. It provides a highly sensitive and versatile hydrodynamic sense that is used in a wide range of behavior. Hydrodynamic stimuli of biological interest originate from both abiotic and biotic sources, and include water currents, turbulence and the water disturbances caused by other animals, such as prey, predators and conspecifics. However, the detection of biologically important stimuli often has to occur against a background of noise generated by water movement, or movement of the fish itself. As such, separating signal and noise is "of the essence" in understanding the behavior and physiology of mechanoreception. Here we discuss general issues of signal and noise in the lateral-line system and the behavioral and physiological strategies that are used by fish to enhance signal detection in a noisy environment. In order for signal and noise to be separated, they need to differ, and we will consider those differences under the headings of: frequency and temporal pattern; intensity discrimination; spatial separation; and mechanisms for the reduction of self-generated noise. We systematically cover the issues of signal and noise in lateral-line systems, but emphasize recent work on self-generated noise, and signal and noise issues related to prey search strategies and collision avoidance.     Wavelet analysis of the Lisbon and Gibraltar North Atlantic Oscillation winter indices

    Abstract The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is one of the most important climatic patterns in the Northern Hemisphere. Indices based on the normalised pressure difference between Iceland and a southern station, such as Lisbon or Gibraltar, have been defined in order to describe NAO temporal evolution. Although exhibiting interannual and decadal variability, the signals are statistically rather featureless and therefore it is difficult to discriminate between different types of stochastic models. In this study, Lisbon and Gibraltar NAO winter indices are analysed using the discrete wavelet transform discrete wavelet transform(DWT). A multi-resolution analysis (MRA) is carried out for a scale-based description of the indices and the wavelet spectrum is used to identify and estimate long-range dependence. The degree of association of the two NAO indices is assessed by estimating the wavelet covariance for the two signals. The scale-based approach inherent to the discrete wavelet methodology allows a scale-by-scale comparison of the signals and shows that although the short-term temporal pattern is very similar for both indices, the long-term temporal structure is distinct. Furthermore, the degree of persistence or ,memory' is also distinct: the Lisbon index is best described by a long-range dependent (LRD) process, while the Gibraltar index is adequately described by a short-range process. Therefore, while trend features in the Lisbon NAO index may be explainable by long-range dependence alone, with no need to invoke external factors, for the Gibraltar index such features cannot be interpreted as resulting only from internal variability through long-range dependence.     Spatial variation in the duration of the rainy season in monsoonal Australia

    Abstract Climatological research in the tropics of northern Australia has focused particularly on the Australian summer monsoon. However, the timing of many ecologically important processes is determined not by the monsoon but by extra-monsoonal rainfall events. These events produce a temporal pattern of wet and dry spells that is at least as important ecologically as the amount of rain. We defined the rainy season as that period when the probability of 10-day dry spells was less than 0.5, and the wet season as that period within the rainy season when the probability of dry spells was less than 0.1. We applied these criteria to seven stations along a strong north,south rainfall gradient spanning more than 12° of latitude in tropical north Australia. The duration of the rainy and wet seasons in northern Australia decreases with increasing latitude. The timing and duration of these seasons were also affected by the El Niño,Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The relative contribution of temporally isolated rainfall events to both the duration of the rainy season and the amount of rainfall increases with latitude. The geographic variation in these seasons corresponds to many patterns occurring in natural ecosystems. We argue that understanding the extra-monsoon rainfall events is critical to understanding how climate variation affects natural ecosystems. Copyright © 2001 Royal Meteorological Society [source]


    Fishing in Peru between 10,000 and 3750 BP

    Abstract Archaeozoological data for the period of 10,000,5000 bp were rare for the southeastern Pacific coast, until recent work provided data from eight sites in Peru and Ecuador. These sites span the early to mid-Holocene period, during which time modern climatic conditions became established. Vertebrate faunal data from these sites provide an opportunity to explore the influence of mid-Holocene environmental changes on fishing in Peru during this time. With two exceptions, most faunal collections are dominated by marine animals, with virtually no terrestrial vertebrates. Many of the marine organisms are catholic species, tolerant of a wide variety of water conditions, rather than ones which clearly prefer warm,tropical or warm,temperate ones. Warm,tropical species are more common in the northern assemblages, as would be expected. There is a temporal pattern as well. Within three subdivisions of this area, warm,tropical animals diminish in abundance, and warm,temperate animals increase. These differences probably reflect cultural responses to mid-Holocene environmental change, in which coastal waters from southern Peru into Ecuador became cooler.     Effects of Plant Population Density and Intercropping with Soybean on the Fractal Dimension of Corn Plant Skeletal Images

    Three-year field experiments were conducted to determine whether the temporal pattern of fractal dimension (FD) for corn (Zea mays L.) plant structure is altered by plant population density (PPD) or intercropping with soybean [Glycine max. (L.) Merr.], and how changes in the FD are related to changes in other canopy characteristics. Plants in monocropped corn and intercropped corn,soybean plots were randomly sampled and labelled for later identification. Corn plant structure was photographed from the side that allowed the maximum appearance of details (perpendicular to the plane of developed leaves) and from two fixed sides (side 1: parallel to the row and side 2: perpendicular to the row). Images were scanned and skeletonized, as skeletal images provide acceptable information to estimate the FD of plant structure two-dimensionally by the box-counting method. Differences in the FD estimated from images taken perpendicular to the plane of developed leaves were not significant among competition treatments. An adjustment of corn plants to treatments, by changing the orientation of the plane of developed leaves with respect to the row, was observed. Based on overall FD means, competition treatments were ranked as: high > normal , intercrop , low for side 1 and intercrop > low , normal > high for side 2. Leaf area index (LAI) and plant height had a positive correlation with FD. In contrast, light penetration had a negative correlation with FD. In conclusion, FD provides a meaningful and effective tool for quantifying corn plant structure, measuring the structural response to cultural practices, and modelling corn plant canopies. Zusammenfassung Folgende Ziele der Untersuchungen wurden berücksichtigt: 1) Eine geeignete Methode für die Abschätzung der Anteile (FD) 2-dimensional für Pflanzen mit einer einfachen dreidimensionalen Vegetationsstruktur wie z. B. Mais (Zea mays L.) zu bestimmen; 2) der Frage nachzugehen, ob die zeitlichen Muster von FD bei der Maispflanzenstruktur durch die Bestandesdichte verändert wird (PPD: low, normal und hoch) oder in Mischanbau mit Sojabohnen (Glyzine max. L.) Merr.); und 3) in welcher Beziehung Änderungen in der FD in der Maispflanzenstruktur zu Änderungen in anderen Bestandeseigenschaften stehen. Pflanzen im Reinanbau von Mais und im Mischanbau in Mais-Sojabohnen-Parzellen wurden randomisiert gesammelt und für die spätere Identifikation gekennzeichnet. Die Maispflanzenstruktur wurde von der Seite fotografiert, so dai eine maximale Darstellung der Details (perpendiculär zu der Ebene der entwickelten Blätter) und von zwei festgelegten Seiten (Seite 1: parallel zur Reihe und Seite 2 perpendikulär zur Reihe) verfügbar war. Die Abbildungen wurden gescannt und skelettiert; Skelettabbildungen geben eine akzeptierbare Information zur Abschätzung von FD Pflanzenstrukturen in zweidimensionaler Form über die Box-counting-Methode. Unterschiede in der FD, die sich aus Bildern mit einer perpendikulären Aufnahme zu der Ebene der entwickelten Blätter ergaben, waren nicht signifikant innerhalb der Konkurrenzbehandlungen. Eine Anpassung der Maispflanzen an die Behandlungen durch Änderungen der Orientierung zur Ebene der entwickelten Blätter im Hinblick auf die Reihe, wurde beobachtet. Auf der Grundlage von gesamt FD-Mittelwerten ergab sich, dai Konkurrenzbehandlungen in folgender Reihe auftraten: Hoch (1,192) > (1,178) , zu Mischanbau (1,177) , zu gering (1,170) für Seite 1 und bei Mischanbau (1,147) > gering (1,158) , (1,153) > hoch für Seite 2. Der Blattflächenindex (LAI) und die Pflanzenhöhe hatten eine positive Korrelation zu FD. Im Gegensatz dazu wies die Lichtpenetration eine negative Korrelation zu FD auf. Es kann festgestellt werden, dai FD eine aussagekräftige und zweckmäiige Methode ist, die Maispflanzenstruktur zu quantifizieren, Strukturreaktionen zum Anbauverfahren zu messen und Maispflanzenbestände zu beschreiben.     Temporal Patterns of Atrial Arrhythmia Recurrences in Patients with Implantable Defibrillators: Implications for Assessing Antiarrhythmic Therapies

    Temporal Patterns of Atrial Arrhythmias.Introduction: The statistical measures commonly used to assess therapies for recurrent atrial arrhythmias (such as time to first recurrence) often assume a uniformly random pattern of arrhythmic events over time. However, the true temporal pattern of atrial arrhythmia recurrences is unknown. The aim of this study was to use linear and nonlinear analyses to characterize the temporal pattern of atrial arrhythmia recurrences in patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators. Methods and Results: The time and date of atrial tachyarrhythmias recorded in 65 patients with combined atrial and ventricular defibrillators were used to construct a probability density function (PDF) and a model of a Poisson distribution of arrhythmic events for each patient. Average patient age was 66 ± 10 years and follow-up was 7.8 ± 4.8 months. A total of 10,759 episodes of atrial tachyarrhythmias were analyzed (range 43 to 618 episodes per patient). The PDF fit a power law distribution for all 65 patients, with an average r2= 0.89 ± 0.08. The PDF distribution differed significantly from the model Poisson distribution in 47 of 65 patients (P = 0.0002). Differences from the Poisson distribution were noted for patients both taking (30/43 patients; P < 0.015) and not taking (17/22 patients; P < 0.017) antiarrhythmic drugs. Median time between atrial arrhythmia detections for all 65 patients was 10.8 minutes. Conclusion: In implantable cardioverter defibrillator patients, the temporal pattern of frequent recurrences of atrial tachyarrhythmias usually is characterized by a power law distribution. The unique statistical properties of this type of distribution should be considered in designing outcome measures for treatment of atrial tachyarrhythmias. [source]
