Selected AbstractsThings to Do Today . . . : A Daily Diary Study on Task Completion at WorkAPPLIED PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 2 2010Brigitte J.C. Claessens Relatively little is known about how goals in complex jobs are translated into action and how they are completed in real life settings. This study addressed the question to what extent planned work may actually be completed on a daily basis. The completion of daily work goals was studied in a sample of 878 tasks identified by 29 R&D engineers with the help of a daily diary. Multilevel analysis was used to analyse the joint effect of task attributes, perceived job characteristics, and personality attributes on the completion of planned work goals. At the level of task attributes, we found that priority, urgency, and lower importance were related to task completion, and at the individual level, conscientiousness, emotional stability, and time management training. Task completion was not related to task attractiveness, workload, job autonomy, planning, or perceived control of time. On connaît relativement peu de choses sur la manière dont les objectifs dans des tâches complexes sont traduites en action et sur la manière dont elles sont accomplies dans le cadre de la vie quotidienne. Cette étude a abordé la question de savoir dans quelle mesure les travaux prévus peuvent être effectivement achevés dans la vie quotidienne. [source] Effects of a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement on cognitive function and fatigue during extended multi-tasking,HUMAN PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY: CLINICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL, Issue 6 2010Crystal F. Haskell Abstract Objectives A significant minority of the population consume multi-vitamins/minerals for their putative health benefits, including potentially beneficial effects on cognitive performance, fatigue and mood. The current study investigated the effect of supplementation with a multi-vitamin/mineral on fatigue and cognitive function in healthy females. Methods In this placebo-controlled, double blind, randomized, parallel groups trial the effect of a multi-vitamin/mineral (Supradyn®) was assessed in 216 females aged 25,50 years. Participants attended the laboratory before and 9 weeks after commencing treatment. During both visits cognitive function and the modulation of task related mood/fatigue were assessed in two discrete 20-min assessment periods during which participants completed a four-module version of the Multi-Tasking Framework. Results Those in the vitamin/mineral group exhibited an attenuation of the negative effects of extended task completion on mood/fatigue. Multi-tasking performance for this group was also improved in terms of accuracy across all tasks, and on two of the individual tasks (Mathematical Processing and Stroop) in terms of both faster and more accurate responses. Analysis of a subsection (N,=,102) demonstrated significant reductions in homocysteine levels following the vitamins/mineral supplement. Conclusions These findings suggest that healthy members of the general population may benefit from augmented levels of vitamins/minerals via direct dietary supplementation. [source] When bonuses backfire: an inaction inertia analysis of procrastination induced by a missed opportunityJOURNAL OF BEHAVIORAL DECISION MAKING, Issue 2 2008Thane S. Pittman Abstract An inaction inertia analysis of procrastination was used to generate the prediction that using bonuses to encourage early task completion will have two opposing effects, encouraging early task completion by some but also inducing procrastination for those who miss the bonus. Study 1 showed that the addition of bonuses for early completion produced both of these effects and also led to overall task completion rates that were either equal to (large bonus) or actually less than (medium and small bonuses) those obtained by simply establishing a completion deadline with no bonus. In Study 2, a lottery methodology was used to manipulate the size of a missed bonus for all participants. Even under these conditions of reduced personal responsibility the larger missed bonus led to increased procrastination as predicted by the inaction inertia analysis. [source] Using Task Clarification, Checklists and Performance Feedback to Improve the Appearance of a Grocery StorePERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT QUARTERLY, Issue 2 2003Leslie Shier ABSTRACT An intervention package of task clarification, checklists, and posted performance feedback was developed to increase completion of tasks contributing to the appearance of a local grocery store. The intervention package was based on an informal diagnostic assessment that examined antecedents, equipment and processes, knowledge and skills, and consequences in the organizational environment. A multiple baseline design across five departments was utilized to evaluate the effects of the intervention package on employee cleaning behavior related to the appearance of the store. The results suggest overall improvement of task completion across the five departments observed, with substantial increases resulting from application of the intervention. The mean percentage of tasks completed in the deli department increased by 36%; by 93% in the meat department; by 38% in the frozen department; by 25% in the produce department; and by 34% in the front-end department. The average increase of task completion across departments was more than 45%. The results of this study are consistent with those of Anderson, Crowell, Hantula, and Siroky (1988), as well as with La Fleur and Hyten (1995), demonstrating that task clarification, checklists, and feedback have positive effects on work performance. [source] Computer aided self-monitoring to increase academic production and reduce self-injurious behavior in a child with autismBEHAVIORAL INTERVENTIONS, Issue 3 2009Denise A. Soares Self-monitoring to increase the on-task behavior of students with learning disabilities has been the focus of numerous studies in the literature. This study examined the effectiveness of computer aided self-monitoring of academic task completion to reduce self-injurious behavior in a 13-year-old male student with autism. Using an ABAB design, data were collected over 22 sessions in a resource-reading classroom. Visual and statistical analyses indicated that when self-monitoring of activity completion was implemented, rates of completion increased and maladaptive behaviors such as self-injurious behavior and tantruming decreased. [source] Dynamic policies for uncertain time-critical tasking problemsNAVAL RESEARCH LOGISTICS: AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL, Issue 2 2008Kevin D. Glazebrook Abstract A recent paper by Gaver et al. 6 argued the importance of studying service control problems in which the usual assumptions (i) that tasks will wait indefinitely for service and (ii) that successful service completions can be observed instantaneously are relaxed. Military and other applications were cited. They proposed a model in which arriving tasks are available for service for a period whose duration is unknown to the system's controller. The allocation of a large amount of processing to a task may make more likely its own successful completion but may also result in the loss of many unserved tasks from the system. Gaver et al. 6 called for the design of dynamic policies for the allocation of service which maximizes the rate of successful task completions achieved, or which come close to doing so. This is the theme of the paper. We utilize dynamic programming policy improvement approaches to design heuristic dynamic policies for service allocation which may be easily computed.
