Selected AbstractsDigital Photography and the Assessment of Therapeutic Results after Bleaching ProceduresJOURNAL OF ESTHETIC AND RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY, Issue 2003WOLFGANG M. BENGEL DR MED DENT ABSTRACT The therapeutic outcome of tooth-bleaching procedures can be assessed by different methods, one of them being digital photography. However, none of the methods seems to be perfect. In this overview factors are discussed that have an influence on color rendition and image brightness in (digital) photography. A photographic procedure is proposed that results in comparable images. Beginning with a short description of some digital cameras currently used in dental photography, the article discusses the influence of light and camera technology on image brightness and color rendition in detail. Even if a highly standardized procedure is performed, there remain factors that affect color and brightness that cannot be excluded completely. Therefore, a photographic procedure is proposed that includes a piece of gray card in the picture as a neutral reference object. In this way, color casts can be eliminated and image brightness can be fine tuned using a standard image-editing program (Adobe Photoshop®, Adobe Systems Incorporated, San Jose, CA, USA) before the relevant color values are metered by the same software. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE A photographic procedure using digital cameras is proposed that is relatively simple and sufficiently precise to allow the assessment of the therapeutic outcome of tooth-bleaching procedures. In this system, a general-purpose finite element software is employed to obtain the restoring forces of the numerical substructure accurately. The restart option is repeatedly used to accommodate the software with alternating loading and analysis characteristic of the on-line test but without touching the source code. An eight-storey base-isolated structure is tested to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed test system. The overall structure is divided into two substructures, i.e. a superstructure to be analysed by the software and a base-isolation layer to be tested physically. Collisions between the base-isolation layer and the surrounding walls are considered in the test. The responses of the overall structure are reasonable, and smooth operation is achieved without any malfunction. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Balabushevich Abstract Summary: Polyelectrolyte multilayer microspheres were prepared by alternating adsorption of dextran sulfate and protamine on melamine formaldehyde cores followed by the partial decomposition of the core. Peroxidase and glucose oxidase were immobilized in the prepared microspheres. Retention of enzymatic activity of the peroxidase/glucose oxidase system incorporated into the microspheres was demonstrated. Applicability of the bienzyme system immobilized in the microspheres for kinetic glucose assay was shown. SEM image of the polyelectrolyte multilayer microsphere. BIH-FANG GUO Bipolar leads are most commonly used in the current practice of pacemaker therapy. In our study of 124 patients implanted with Guidant/Cardiac Pacemakers (CPI) Vigor dual chamber pacemakers, 5 patients had unexpectedly abrupt increases in bipolar lead impedance and pacing threshold 2 weeks to 18 months postimplantation without changes in sensing function. With the lead configuration reprogrammed to unipolar, the lead impedance and pacing threshold were restored to appropriate ranges. The changes in bipolar lead parameters can be caused by the CPI's "Quick Connect" (QC1) header lead system incorporated in these pacemakers. [source] |
