Randall Hughes Abstract Two major foci of ecological research involve reciprocal views of the relationship between biodiversity and disturbance: disturbance determines community diversity or diversity determines realized disturbance severity. Here, we present an initial attempt to synthesize these two approaches in order to understand whether feedbacks occur, and what their effects on patterns of diversity might be. Our review of published experiments shows that (i) disturbance severity can be both a cause and a consequence of local diversity in a wide range of ecosystems and (ii) shapes of the unidirectional relationships between diversity and disturbance can be quite variable. To explore how feedbacks between diversity and disturbance might operate to alter expected patterns of diversity in nature, we develop and then evaluate a conceptual model that decomposes the relationships into component parts, considering sequentially the effect of diversity on disturbance severity, and the effect of realized disturbance on diversity loss, subsequent recruitment, and competitive exclusion. Our model suggests that feedbacks can increase mean values of richness, decrease variability, and alter the patterns of correlation between diversity and disturbance in nature. We close by offering ideas for future research to help fill gaps in our understanding of reciprocal relationships among ecological variables like diversity and disturbance. [source] Inefficient processing of mRNA for the membraneform of IgE is a genetic mechanism to limit recruitment of IgE-secreting cellsEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF IMMUNOLOGY, Issue 7 2006Alexander Karnowski Abstract Immunoglobulin,E (IgE) is the key effector element in allergic diseases ranging from innocuous hay fever to life-threatening anaphylactic shock. Compared to other Ig classes, IgE serum levels are very low. In its membrane-bound form (mIgE), IgE behaves as a classical antigen receptor on B,lymphocytes. Expression of mIgE is essential for subsequent recruitment of IgE-secreting cells. We show that in activated, mIgE-bearing B,cells, mRNA for the membrane forms of both murine and human epsilon (,) heavy chains (HC) are poorly expressed compared to mRNA for the secreted forms. In contrast, in mIgG-bearing B,cells, mRNA for the membrane forms of murine gamma-1 (,1) and the corresponding human ,4 HC are expressed at a much higher level than mRNA for the respective secreted forms. We show that these findings correlate with the presence of deviant polyadenylation signal hexamers in the 3,,untranslated region (UTR) of both murine and human ,,genes, causing inefficient processing of primary transcripts and thus poor expression of the proteins and poor recruitment of IgE-producing cells in the immune response. Thus, we have identified a genetic steering mechanism in the regulation of IgE synthesis that represents a further means to restrain potentially dangerous, high serum IgE levels. [source] Neutrophil depletion protects against murine acetaminophen hepatotoxicity,,HEPATOLOGY, Issue 6 2006Zhang-Xu Liu We previously reported that liver natural killer (NK) and NKT cells play a critical role in mouse model of acetaminophen (APAP)-induced liver injury by producing interferon gamma (IFN-,) and modulating chemokine production and subsequent recruitment of neutrophils into the liver. In this report, we examined the role of neutrophils in the progression of APAP hepatotoxicity. C57BL/6 mice were given an intraperitoneal toxic dose of APAP (500 mg/kg), which caused severe acute liver injury characterized by significant elevation of serum ALT, centrilobular hepatic necrosis, and increased hepatic inflammatory cell accumulation. Flow cytometric analysis of isolated hepatic leukocytes demonstrated that the major fraction of increased hepatic leukocytes at 6 and 24 hours after APAP was neutrophils (Mac-1+Gr-1+). Depletion of neutrophils by in vivo treatment with anti-Gr-1 antibody (RB6-8C5) significantly protected mice against APAP-induced liver injury, as evidenced by markedly reduced serum ALT levels, centrilobular hepatic necrosis, and improved mouse survival. The protection was associated with decreased FasL-expressing cells, cytotoxicity against hepatocytes, and respiratory burst in hepatic leukocytes. In intracellular adhesion molecule (ICAM)-1,deficient mice, APAP caused markedly reduced liver injury when compared with wild-type mice. The marked protection in ICAM-1,deficient mice was associated with decreased accumulation of neutrophils in the liver. Hepatic GSH depletion and APAP-adducts showed no differences among the antibody-treated, ICAM-1,deficient, and normal mice. [source] Impact of cocoa farming on vegetation in an agricultural landscape in GhanaAFRICAN JOURNAL OF ECOLOGY, Issue 2 2010Alex Asase Abstract Cocoa production occurs almost wholly within areas identified as biodiversity hotspots in West Africa and it has been noted as a major contributor to deforestation at the forest-agriculture interface. This study investigated the impact of cocoa farming on vegetation in relation to three land-use types of increasing cocoa production intensity from remnant native forest through shaded to unshaded cocoa farmlands in Ghana. The study used transects and forty-two 25 m × 25 m vegetation plots. The overall noncocoa plant species richness decreased significantly (95% CI) from the remnant native forest through shaded to the unshaded cocoa farmlands. Significant differences (P , 0.05) were also found in the mean density and basal area of noncocoa plants per hectare with the remnant native forest recording the highest values and the unshaded cocoa farmlands the lowest. The relative density of about 44.7% out of the 41 most abundant plant species declined in cocoa farmlands. The results of this study showed that cocoa farming could result in a drastic forest plant species loss with subsequent recruitment of nonforest species, forest plant species population decline as well as changes in the structural characteristics of the vegetation. This impact increases with increasing cocoa production intensity. Résumé En Afrique de l'Ouest, le cacao est produit presque entièrement dans des zones identifiées comme des hauts-lieux de la biodiversité et l'on a noté qu'il contribue toujours de façon importante à la déforestation à l'interface entre forêts et terres agricoles. Cette étude a analysé l'impact de la culture de cacao sur la végétation pour une utilisation des terres de trois types caractérisés par des intensités de production de cacao croissantes, allant des restes de forêt native à des exploitations ombragées et non ombragées de cacao, au Ghana. Cette étude a utilisé des transects et 42 parcelles de végétation de 25 m × 25 m. La richesse globale en espèces végétales - hors cacao - diminuait significativement (IC 95%) en passant des restes de forêt native aux exploitations de cacao ombragées et ensuite à celles qui sont exposées au soleil. On a aussi trouvé des différences significatives (P , 0,05) de la densité moyenne et de la surface basale par hectare des plants hors cacao, la forêt native restante donnant les valeurs les plus hautes et les exploitations exposées de cacao, les plus basses. La densité relative de près de 44,7% des 41 espèces végétales les plus abondantes diminuait dans les exploitations de cacao. Les résultats de cette étude ont montré que la production de cacao pouvait entraîner une perte drastique des espèces végétales forestières suivie d'un recrutement d'espèces non forestières, un déclin des populations d'espèces végétales forestières et des changements des caractéristiques structurelles de la végétation. [source] Reestablishment of the Southern California Rocky Intertidal Brown Alga, Silvetia compressa: An Experimental Investigation of Techniques and Abiotic and Biotic Factors That Affect Restoration SuccessRESTORATION ECOLOGY, Issue 2010Stephen G. Whitaker Previous research has indicated that many rocky intertidal macrophyte communities in southern California, and other locations around the world, have shifted from larger, highly productive, fleshy seaweeds toward a smaller, less productive, disturbance-tolerant flora. In widespread decline are ecologically important, canopy-forming, brown seaweeds, such as the southern California rockweed species Silvetia compressa. Restoration efforts are common for depleted biogenic species in other habitats, but restoration within rocky intertidal zones, particularly on wave-exposed coasts, has been largely unexplored. In two phases, we attempted to restore Silvetia populations on a southern California shore by transplanting live plants and experimentally investigating factors that affect their survival. In Phase I, we implemented a three-way factorial design where juvenile Silvetia thalli were transplanted at four sites with a combination of simulated canopy and herbivore exclusion treatments. Transplant survival was low, although enhanced by the presence of a canopy; site and herbivore presence did not affect survival. In Phase II, we used a two-way factorial design, transplanting two size classes of rockweeds (juveniles and reproductive adults) on horizontal and partially shaded, north-facing vertical surfaces at a target location where this rockweed has been missing since at least the 1970s. Transplant survival was moderate but lower than natural survival rates. Larger thalli exhibited significantly higher survival rates than smaller thalli in both the transplanted and naturally occurring populations, particularly on vertical surfaces. Higher mortality on horizontal surfaces may have been due to differences in desiccation stress and human trampling. Transplanting reproductive adults resulted in the subsequent recruitment of new individuals. [source] |
