Design of optimal extrusion die for a range of different materials

THE coat-hanger melt distributor is a device commonly used in the wire coating process. Its task is to distribute the melt around the conductor uniformly. It is quite common that materials and flow rates differ from what had been specified during the design procedure. This may lead to bad performance with materials of very different rheological properties from the design material. In this article, we present an optimal design approach to avoid this loss of performances. This approach involves coupling a three-dimensional finite element simulation software with an optimization strategy based on a response surface method. The objective is to determine a coat-hanger melt distributor geometry that ensures a homogeneous exit velocity distribution that will best accommodate for a different range of materials. A coat-hanger melt distributor with a manifold of constant width is designed, and a set of flow distribution measurements is established for two different materials. The results of numerical simulation are then validated by comparison with experimental measurements. The effect of material change is also investigated. POLYM. ENG. The Glass Cliff: Evidence that Women are Over-Represented in Precarious Leadership Positions

There has been much research and conjecture concerning the barriers women face in trying to climb the corporate ladder, with evidence suggesting that they typically confront a ,glass ceiling' while men are more likely to benefit from a ,glass escalator'. But what happens when women do achieve leadership roles? And what sorts of positions are they given? This paper argues that while women are now achieving more high profile positions, they are more likely than men to find themselves on a ,glass cliff', such that their positions are risky or precarious. This hypothesis was investigated in an archival study examining the performance of FTSE 100 companies before and after the appointment of a male or female board member. The study revealed that during a period of overall stock-market decline those companies who appointed women to their boards were more likely to have experienced consistently bad performance in the preceding five months than those who appointed men. These results expose an additional, largely invisible, hurdle that women need to overcome in the workplace. Implications for the evaluation of women leaders are discussed and directions for future research are outlined. [source]


Age-related white matter lesions are associated with reduction of the apparent diffusion coefficient in the cerebellum

Cerebellar apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) was found to be increased after acute cerebral hemispheric stroke. There are no data on cerebellar ADC changes in patients with chronic, age-related white matter lesions (ARWML). We aimed to determine longitudinal ADC variations on cerebral hemispheric and cerebellar white matter regions of patients with ARWML in order to study relations between ADC changes in both regions. ADC was measured serially (1-year interval) on lesioned periventricular frontal white matter, frontal and parietoccipital normal appearing white matter and middle cerebellar peduncles, on 19 aged patients with ARWML, which also underwent gait assessment. We compared regional ADC at 0 and 1 year and calculated variation percentages for each region. Correlation analysis was made between ADC variation in cerebellar regions and in contralateral hemispheric regions and between cerebellar ADC at 1 year and walking speed. After 1 year, ADC was higher on lesioned periventricular frontal white matter and lower on cerebellar regions. ADC variations on these regions were negatively correlated. Cerebellar ADC measured after 1 year was positively correlated with walking speed. This suggests a link between vascular disease progression inside frontal lesions and ADC reduction in contralateral cerebellar peduncles. Chronic ischemia in frontal white matter could have interrupted frontal-cerebellar circuits, producing hypometabolism in cerebellar regions (and worse performance on motor tasks), decreased perfusion and hence ADC reduction. A comparative simulation study of work processes in autonomous production cells

An approach to human-centered design and assessment of work processes in flexible manufacturing systems with the help of dynamic task networks is presented. To model and simulate the task networks, the method of timed colored Petri Nets is used. Two task networks are developed. The first task network is a model of work processes in Autonomous Production Cells (APCs). The second task network represents work processes in conventional Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC)-based manufacturing systems. The material processing technology is associated with 5-axis milling. The values of attributes of task elements were acquired empirically on a fine-grained level with reference to a sample milling order. Comparative hypotheses regarding time-on-task, supervisory control functions, levels of cognitive control, human error (HE), and labor division were then formulated. To test these hypotheses, several simulation experiments were conducted. The results from inferential statistics show that single-operator APCs have a 30% higher efficiency in relation to total time-on-task. Moreover, the level of cognitive control is significantly shifted toward rule- and knowledge-based behavior. Surprisingly, the simulation of minor HE does not demonstrate a significantly worse performance from APCs. A simulated labor division among central process planner and production operator allows an additional efficiency improvement of approximately 15%. However, the labor division has two important drawbacks: first, a sequential incompleteness of operators' task spectrum occurs; second, the operator has to cope with hierarchical task incompleteness. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was carried out to investigate the effects of varying lot sizes and number of processed orders. © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. [source]


Gait Dysfunction in Mild Cognitive Impairment Syndromes

OBJECTIVES: To conduct a systematic clinical and quantitative assessment of gait in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) syndromes. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. SETTING: Einstein Aging Study, a community-based longitudinal aging study. PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-four individuals with amnestic MCI (a-MCI), 62 with nonamnestic-MCI (na-MCI), and 295 healthy controls identified from the Einstein Aging Study participants. MEASUREMENTS: Comparison of clinical and quantitative gait performance in subjects with MCI subtypes with that of cognitively normal older adults. RESULTS: Neurological gaits were more common in a-MCI (31.5%, P=.008) but not in na-MCI (19.4%, P=.55), than in controls (16.3%). Quantitative gait in multiple parameters was worse in both MCI subtypes than in controls. Factor analysis revealed three independent factors representing pace, rhythm, and variability. Subjects with a-MCI had worse rhythm and variability scores than those with na-MCI and controls. Subjects with na-MCI had worse performance on the pace domain than the other two groups. Subjects with MCI and gait abnormalities had higher disability scores than subjects with MCI without gait abnormalities. CONCLUSION: Gait dysfunction is common in older individuals with amnestic and nonamnestic subtypes of MCI. [source]

Implications of general, patient-specific treatment strategies
Abstract Rationale, aims and objectives, The use of general clinical guidelines versus customization of patient care presents a dilemma for clinicians managing chronic illness. The objective of this project is to investigate the claim that the performance of customized strategies for the management of chronic illness depends on accurate patient categorization, and inaccurate categorization can lead to worse performance than that achievable using a general clinical guideline. Methods, This paper is based on an analysis of a basic utility model that differentiates between the use of general management strategies and customized strategies. Results, The analysis identifies necessary conditions for preferring general strategies to customized strategies as a trade-off between strategy performance and the probability of correct patient categorization. The analysis shows that customized treatment strategies developed under optimal conditions are not necessarily preferred. Conclusions, Results of the analysis have four implications regarding the design and use of clinical guidelines and customization of care: (i) the balance between the applications of more general strategies versus customization depends on the specificity and accuracy of the strategies; (ii) adoption of clinical guidelines may be stifled as the complexity of guidelines increases to account for growing evidence; (iii) clinical inertia (i.e. the failure to intensify an indicated treatment) can be a rational response to strategy specificity and the probability of misapplication; and, (iv) current clinical guidelines and other decision-support tools may be improved if they accommodate the need for customization of strategies for some patients while providing support for proper categorization of patients. Numerical Simulation of Thrombus Aspiration in Two Realistic Models of Catheter Tips

Abstract Thrombus aspiration catheters are devices used to remove a blood clot from a vessel, usually prior to angioplasty or stent implantation. However, in vitro results showed that the use of different commercial devices could produce very different thrombus removals, suggesting a primary dependence on the distal tip configuration of the catheter. A computational methodology based on realistic catheter tip modeling was developed to investigate the factors affecting the thrombus suction. Two different designs were considered, either with a single central lumen or a combination of central and side holes. First, steady-state aspiration of distilled water from a reservoir was simulated and compared with experimental tests. Subsequently, the aspiration of a totally occlusive thrombus, modeled as a high viscous fluid, was simulated solving a complex two-phase (blood and thrombus) problem. In particular, the benefit of additional openings was investigated. Good matching between the steady-state experimental and numerically simulated hydraulic behaviors allowed a validation of the numerical models. Numerical results of thrombus aspiration showed that the catheter with central and side holes had a worse performance if compared with the single central lumen catheter. Indeed, the inlets in contact with both blood and thrombus preferentially aspirate blood due to its much lower viscosity. This effect hindered the aspiration of thrombus. The amount of aspirated thrombus highly depends on the complex, two-phase fluid dynamics occurring across the catheter tips. Results suggested that location of additional holes is crucial in the catheter aspiration performance. [source]


Neuropsychological symptom dimensions in bipolar disorder and schizophrenia

Background:, While neurocognitive (NC) impairments have been well documented in schizophrenia (SZ), there is limited data as to whether similar impairments are present in other persistent mental illnesses. Recent data indicate that NC impairments may be manifested in bipolar disorder (BPD) and that they persist across disease states, including euthymia. An important question is whether a comparable structure of NC impairments is present in the 2 diagnostic groups. Objective:, In a previous factor analytic study, we identified 6 factors to describe the basic underlying structure of neuropsychological (NP) functioning in SZ: Attention, Working Memory, Learning, Verbal Knowledge, Non-Verbal Functions, Ideational Fluency. The goal of this study was to investigate whether this factor structure is generalizable for BPD. Methods:, The BPD sample included patients (n = 155) from an ongoing longitudinal study evaluating BPD at the time of hospitalization for relapse and at multiple time points over the following 2 years. The SZ sample included patients (n = 250) from a 3-year study. For the current examination the baseline NP evaluations were selected for both samples. Results:, Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses in the BPD sample yielded factors similar to those identified in the SZ sample. The coefficients of congruence ranged between 0.66,0.90 for the individual factors, indicating a good overall correspondence between the factor structures in the 2 diagnostic groups. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) analysis with education level, full scale-IQ, gender and ethnicity as covariates indicated that SZ patients had markedly worse performance on the Attention and Non-Verbal Functioning factors compared to the BPD patients. Conclusions:, Together, these data suggest that while the same underlying factor structure describes NP functioning in both groups, the profile of impairments appears to vary with the diagnosis. Circle hooks, ,J' hooks and drop-back time: a hook performance study of the south Florida recreational live-bait fishery for sailfish, Istiophorus platypterus

Abstract, This study evaluates the performance of two types of non-offset circle hooks (traditional and non-traditional) and a similar-sized ,J' hook commonly used in the south Florida recreational live-bait fishery for Atlantic sailfish, Istiophorus platypterus (Shaw). A total of 766 sailfish were caught off south Florida (Jupiter to Key West, FL, USA) to assess hook performance and drop-back time, which is the interval between the fish's initial strike and exertion of pressure by the fisher to engage the hook. Four drop-back intervals were examined (0,5, 6,10, 11,15 and >15 s), and hook performance was assessed in terms of proportions of successful catch, undesirable hook locations, bleeding events and undesirable release condition associated with physical hook damage and trauma. In terms of hook performance, the traditionally-shaped circle hook had the greatest conservation benefit for survival after release. In addition, this was the only hook type tested that performed well during each drop-back interval for all performance metrics. Conversely, ,J' hooks resulted in higher proportions of undesirable hook locations (as much as twofold), bleeding and fish released in undesirable condition, particularly during long drop-back intervals. Non-traditional circle hooks had performance results intermediate to the other hook types, but also had the worst performance relative to undesirable release condition during the first two drop-back intervals. Choice of hook type and drop-back interval can significantly change hook wounding, and different models of non-offset circle hooks should not be assumed to perform equivalently. [source]


Physical Performance and Risk of Hip Fractures in Older Men,,

Abstract The aim of these analyses was to describe the association between physical performance and risk of hip fractures in older men. Performance on five physical function exams (leg power, grip strength, usual walking pace, narrow walk balance test, and five repeated chair stands) was assessed in 5902 men ,65 yr of age. Performance (time to complete or strength) was analyzed as quartiles, with an additional category for unable to complete the measure, in proportional hazards models. Follow-up averaged 5.3 yr; 77 incident hip fractures were confirmed by physician review of radiology reports. Poor physical performance was associated with an increased risk of hip fracture. In particular, repeated chair stand performance was strongly related to hip fracture risk. Men unable to complete this exam were much more likely to experience a hip fracture than men in the fastest quartile of this test (multivariate hazard ratio [MHR]: 8.15; 95% CI: 2.65, 25.03). Men with the worst performance (weakest/slowest quartile or unable) on at least three exams had an increased risk of hip fracture compared with men with higher functioning (MHR: 3.14, 95% CI: 1.46, 6.73). Nearly two thirds of the hip fractures (N = 49, 64%) occurred in men with poor performance on at least three exams. Poor physical function is independently associated with an increased risk of hip fracture in older men. The repeated chair stands exam should be considered in clinical settings for evaluation of hip fracture risk. Concurrent poor performance on multiple physical function exams is associated with an increased risk of hip fractures. [source]


Overdrive Versus Conventional or Closed-Loop Rate Modulation Pacing in the Prevention of Atrial Tachyarrhythmias in Brady-Tachy Syndrome: On Behalf of the Burden II Study Group

Background:Optimizing dual-chamber pacing to prevent recurrences of atrial tachyarrhythmias (AT) in sinus node dysfunction is still debated. Despite the large number of studies, efficacy of sophisticated preventive algorithms has never been proven. It is not clear whether this is due to imperfect study designs or to a substantial inefficacy of pacing therapies. Aim:To intraindividually compare AT burden between an atrial overdrive and two heart rate modulation approaches: a conventional accelerometric-sensor-based DDDR mode and a contractility-driven rate responsive closed loop (CLS) algorithm. Methods and Results:Four hundred fifty-one patients with Brady-Tachy syndrome (BTS), severe bradycardia, and a documented episode of atrial fibrillation were enrolled. One month after implant, each pacing therapy was activated for 3 months in random order. A simple log transformation was used to handle large and skew AT burden distributions. Estimates were adjusted for false-positive AT episodes and reported as geometric means (95% confidence interval). A significantly higher AT burden was observed during overdrive, 0.14% (0.09%, 0.23%) (adjusted, 0.12%[0.07%, 0.20%]). Both DDDR and CLS performed better: respectively, 0.11% (0.07%, 0.17%) (adjusted, 0.08%[0.05%, 0.14%]), 0.06% (0.03%, 0.09%) (adjusted, 0.04%[0.03%, 0.07%]). All the comparisons were statistically significant. During overdrive significantly more patients had AT episodes of duration between 1 minute and 1 hour. No significant differences were observed for longer episodes. Conclusions:Atrial overdrive showed the worst performance in terms of AT burden reduction and should not be preferred to heart rate modulation approaches that still have to be considered as a first-choice pacing mode in BTS. Low- and high-level controlled processing in executive motor control tasks in 5,6-year-old children at risk of ADHD

Background: The scant research on the characteristics of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in kindergarten years curtails progress on early assessment of ADHD. Method: By screening a general population sample of 1317 five- to six-year-old children, four groups of children were selected. The performance of 30 children later diagnosed with ADHD was compared with 74 children later diagnosed with ,borderline ADHD' (children exhibiting all ADHD symptoms but without disruptions on two situations), 113 children later diagnosed with other psychopathology, and 126 healthy controls on computerised motor control tasks involving low- and high-level controlled processing. In addition, motor control was compared with movement speed. Results: The children at risk of ADHD were in general less accurate and more variable in their movements than the children with other psychopathology and healthy controls. Under conditions of high-level controlled processing, the children at risk of ADHD were disproportionately more inaccurate and had a more unstable performance with their preferred hand than the other children. In addition, linear effects were found, with the children at risk of ADHD having the worst performance, followed by the children with ,borderline ADHD', and then both groups of control children. No significant group differences were found in movement speed. Conclusions: The main findings are interpreted as evidence for a specific deficit in high-level controlled processing in young children at risk of ADHD, now found in a motor task, rather than a response task. Furthermore, the results support the notion that ADHD represents a dimensional trait. In addition, problems in movement control (the need to allocate attentional capacity) rather than problems in movement speed distinguish children at risk of ADHD from other children. The findings are interpreted as evidence that higher-order executive processes, such as self-control and self-regulation, are already affected early in the development of ADHD. [source]
