    THE EFFECTS OF SUBDIVISION ON THE GENETIC DIVERGENCE OF POPULATIONS AND SPECIES

    Abstract. An island model of migration is used to study the effects of subdivision within populations and species on sample genealogies and on between-population or between-species measures of genetic variation. The model assumes that the number of demes within each population or species is large. When populations (or species), connected either by gene flow or historical association, are themselves subdivided into demes, changes in the migration rate among demes alter both the structure of genealogies and the time scale of the coalescent process. The time scale of the coalescent is related to the effective size of the population, which depends on the migration rate among demes. When the migration rate among demes within populations is low, isolation (or speciation) events seem more recent and migration rates among populations seem higher because the effective size of each population is increased. This affects the probability of reciprocal monophyly of two samples, the chance that a gene tree of a sample matches the species tree, and relative likelihoods of different types of polymorphic sites. It can also have a profound effect on the estimation of divergence times. [source]


    GENETIC DIVERGENCE CORRELATES WITH MORPHOLOGICAL AND ECOLOGICAL SUBDIVISION IN THE DEEP-WATER ELK KELP, PELAGOPHYCUS PORRA (PHAEOPHYCEAE)

    Pelagophycus porra (Leman) Setchell has a narrow distribution confined to deep water from the Channel Islands off the southern California coast to central Baja California, Mexico. Distinct morphotypes are consistently correlated with distinctive habitats, that is, windward exposures characterized by strong water motion and rocky substrates, and sheltered areas with soft substrates found on the lee sides of the islands. We tested the hypothesis that morphologically and ecologically distinct forms reflect genetically distinct stands. Individuals representing populations from three islands and the mainland were compared using RFLP analyses of the nuclear rDNA internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2), chloroplast trnL (UAA) intron sequences, and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPDs). No variation was found in a survey of 20 restriction sites of ITS1 (ca. 320 base pair [bp]) and ITS2 (ca. 360 bp) among individuals from six populations. Likewise, comparisons of trnL intron (241 bp) sequences among nine individuals from seven populations were identical with the exception of a CATAGT insert in two adjacent stands. A RAPD analysis of 24 individuals from nine populations (4 windward and 5 leeward) using 16 primers generated 166 bands. Thirty-eight percent of the bands did not vary, 16% were unique to a given individual, and 46% were variable. Neighbor joining analysis produced a well-resolved tree with moderately high bootstrap support in which windward and leeward populations were easily distinguished. The lack of divergence in both the fast evolving nuclear rDNA-ITS and the chloroplast trnL intron does not support the morphotypes as different species. However, the compartmentalized differentiation shown in the RAPD data clearly points to isolation. This, and previous ecological studies that demonstrate habitat specificity suggest that leeward stands probably comprise a species in statu nascendi. [source]


    Adaptive and Feature-Preserving Subdivision for High-Quality Tetrahedral Meshes

    I.3.5 [Computer Graphics]: Curve, surface, solid, and object representations Abstract We present an adaptive subdivision scheme for unstructured tetrahedral meshes inspired by the, -subdivision scheme for triangular meshes. Existing tetrahedral subdivision schemes do not support adaptive refinement and have traditionally been driven by the need to generate smooth three-dimensional deformations of solids. These schemes use edge bisections to subdivide tetrahedra, which generates octahedra in addition to tetrahedra. To split octahedra into tetrahedra one routinely chooses a direction for the diagonals for the subdivision step. We propose a new topology-based refinement operator that generates only tetrahedra and supports adaptive refinement. Our tetrahedral subdivision algorithm is motivated by the need to have one representation for the modeling, the simulation and the visualization and so to bridge the gap between CAD and CAE. Our subdivision algorithm design emphasizes on geometric quality of the tetrahedral meshes, local and adaptive refinement operations, and preservation of sharp geometric features on the boundary and in the interior of the physical domain.     Altered volume and hemispheric asymmetry of the superficial cortical layers in the schizophrenia planum temporale

    Abstract In vivo structural MRI studies in schizophrenia auditory cerebral cortex have reported smaller volumes and, less consistently, have reported altered hemispheric asymmetry of volumes. We used autopsy brains from 19 schizophrenia and 18 nonpsychiatric male subjects to measure the volume asymmetry of the planum temporal (PT). We then used the most recently autopsied 11 schizophrenia and 10 nonpsychiatric brains to measure the widths and fractional volumes of the upper (I,III) and lower (IV,VI) layers. Measurements of whole PT gray matter volumes did not show significant changes in schizophrenia. Nevertheless, laminar volume measurements revealed that the upper layers of the PT comprise a smaller fraction of the total cortex in schizophrenia than in nonpsychiatric brains. Subdivision of the PT showed that this change was especially prominent caudally, beyond Heschl's gyrus, whereas similar but less pronounced changes were found in the rostral PT and Heschl's gyrus. Complementary measures of laminar widths showed that the altered fractional volume in the caudal left PT was due mainly to ,8% thinner upper layers. However, the caudal right PT had a different profile, with thicker lower layers and comparatively unchanged upper layers. Thus, in the present study, laminar measurements provided a more sensitive method for detecting changes than measurement of whole PT volumes. Besides findings in schizophrenia, our cortical width measurements revealed normal hemispheric asymmetries consistent with previous reports. In schizophrenia, the thinner upper layers of the caudal PT suggest disrupted corticocortical processing, possibly affecting the multisensory integration and phonetic processing of this region.     Histological grading of invasive breast carcinoma , a simplification of existing methods in a large conservation series with long-term follow-up

    Aims:, To assess the validity of grading in the Edinburgh Breast Conservation Series; a consecutive cohort of 1812 early breast cancer patients treated by breast conservation and radiotherapy between 1981 and 1998 in a single specialist centre with ,9 years' follow-up and full staging data. Methods and results:, A single pathologist (J.St.J.T) graded 1650 cases using the Elston and Ellis method (EE) with particular reference to the component data: acinar differentiation, nuclear pleomorphism and mitotic counts. The original method was then compared with binary scoring of the same components and the relationship to prognosis reassessed. EE grades and individual grade components were prognostic (P < 0.0001) with 10-year cause-specific survival of 95.6%, 86.4% and 74.7% for EE grades 1, 2 and 3, respectively. A binary scoring of grade components produces four groups, splitting EE grade 2 tumours into two groups with different outcomes , 10-year survival rates for the four revised grades were 96.0%, 89.0%, 79.7% and 75.4%, respectively. Conclusions:, Existing grading methodology is fully applicable in the narrower context of a conservation series but can be simplified. Subdivision of EE grade 2 into a true intermediate prognosis group and a second group with a worse prognosis also adds benefit. [source]


    Subdivision of the Sanbagawa pumpellyite,actinolite facies region in central Shikoku, southwest Japan

    Abstract The mineral assemblages of the pumpellyite,actinolite facies such as pumpellyite + actinolite + epidote + chlorite or actinolite + epidote + hematite + chlorite occur in the Sanbagawa low-grade metamorphic region, central Shikoku, southwest Japan. Chemical compositions of these minerals from the eight newly studied areas were analyzed in order to evaluate the areal extent and thermal structure of the region. In the buffered assemblage of pumpellyite + actinolite + epidote + chlorite, the Fe3+/(Fe3+ + Al) values of epidote decrease slightly with decreasing Fe2+/(Fe2+ + Mg) values for chlorite. The changes in these values show a general correlation with temperature. The presence of this relationship implies that the Fe3+/(Fe3+ + Al) values of epidote can be used to divide the Sanbagawa low-grade metamorphic region into low-, medium- and high-grade subzones. The areal distribution of these subzones indicates that: (i) the temperature seems to decrease in the same sense as envisaged by the zonal mapping of the higher-grade pelitic schists; and (ii) there is no significant gap of metamorphic conditions through the boundary between the two structural units (Besshi and Oboke units). It follows that the Sanbagawa low-grade metamorphic region decreases in temperature going up the structural section, and tectonic discontinuities have not affected the thermal structure. [source]


    EARLY ORDOVICIAN (ARENIG) TRILOBITE PALAEOECOLOGY AND PALAEOBIOGEOGRAPHY OF THE SOUTH CHINA PLATE

    Abstract:, Faunal composition of South Chinese Arenig benthic trilobite associations is investigated using the multivariate techniques of TWINSPAN, DCA and seriation. Eight fairly distinct benthic associations can be differentiated, organized primarily along a palaeobathymetrical gradient across the Yangtze Platform in southern Shaanxi and western Hubei and the Jiangnan Transitional Belt in northern Hunan: the Taihungshania, Neseuretus, Trinucleid and Asaphid- Pseudocalymene associations (shallow shelf), the Asaphid-Raphiophorid and Nileid-Asaphid associations (< 100 m outer shelf), the Nileid-Illaenid Association (deep outer shelf carbonates) and the Pseudopetigurus Association (deep outer shelf clastics). The highest levels of diversity are displayed by the Asaphid-Raphiophorid Association of western Hubei. Investigation of the biogeographical affinities of this fauna indicates that South China is biogeographically closest to the other Chinese geotectonic units, and displays strong faunal connections to other central and eastern Asian regions as well as to Tethyan and South American regions. Subdivision of the South Chinese trilobite fauna into different depth zones shows a statistically significant correlation between increasing water depth and increasing faunal cosmopolitanism, although taxa endemic to China or Gondwana also occur even in slope faunas. The results of this biogeographical analysis are consistent with a tropical or subtropical peri-Gondwanan association of South China with other Asian terranes. [source]


    The species delimitation problem applied to the Agabus bipustulatus complex (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae) in north Scandinavia

    Agabus bipustulatus (Linnaeus) is one of the most common aquatic beetles in Europe. Two species have been traditionally recognized within the Palaearctic Agabus bipustulatus complex (Coleoptera, Dytiscidae) in Scandinavia: a lowland form A. bipustulatus and a high-altitude form A. solieri Aube. The specific status of solieri has been debated for more than a century but no quantitative investigation has been made to evaluate the status of this taxon. In this study we show that there is no clear-cut delimitation between the two forms, either morphological or genetic, across an altitudinal gradient in north Scandinavia. Morphological differences between 22 populations were analysed separately for each sex with both thin-plate splines relative warp analysis and ,classical-length' morphometries. Genetic variation at five polymorphic enzyme loci was analysed among seven populations. The morphological studies showed gradual variation correlated with altitude, in particular in the character that is traditionally used to separate solieri and bipustulatus, and in both the beetles' morphometric size and the lateral width of the metasternal plate, which is connected to flight capacity. The genetic study indicates that the a-Gpdh enzyme locus, which is involved in the transfer of energy to the flight muscles, is evidently subject to directional selection. Only minor population differences were observed without this system. Subdivision was found in some populations and was probably caused by migration from outside or within the local population. The overall conclusion is that there is no clear-cut species delimitation between A. bipustulatus and A. solieri in north Scandinavia. This indicates that A. solieri is a cold-adapted altitudinal form of the variable A. bipustulatus; additional support for this is the finding of solieri,look alikes' in cold springs in areas normally inhabited by bipustulatus.     Papillary microcarcinoma of the thyroid,Prognostic significance of lymph node metastasis and multifocality

    Abstract BACKGROUND It is known that patients with papillary microcarcinoma (PMC) of the thyroid gland have a very favorable prognosis. The rising incidence of PMC among papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) necessitates the identification of prognostic factors and the formulation of treatment protocols. METHODS The authors conducted a retrospective analysis of 203 patients with PMC who were diagnosed on or before 1999 and were treated at the Department of Clinical Oncology, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Hong Kong. RESULTS The cause specific survival, locoregional (LR) failure free survival, and distant metastases failure free survival rates at 10 years were 100%, 92.1%, and 97.1%, respectively. Five patients had lung metastases; 2 patients died of their metastases 12.9 years and 14.8 years after diagnosis, and 3 patients achieved clinical remission after radioiodine (RAI) treatment. Twelve patients had LR recurrences. Patients with LR recurrence were highly salvageable with a combination of surgery, RAI treatment, and external radiotherapy; all but one (who refused treatment) were alive without disease at last follow-up. Multivariate analyses did not reveal any independent prognostic factor for survival. The risk of cervical lymph node (LN) recurrence increased 6.2-fold (P = 0.01) and 5.6-fold (P = 0.02) when LN metastases and multifocal disease were present at diagnosis. RAI ablation reduced the LN recurrence rate to 0.27 (P = 0.04). The presence of LN metastasis increased the rate of distant metastasis 11.2-fold (P = 0.03). Age was not a significant factor in predicting disease recurrence or survival. Subdivision by tumor sizes , 5 mm and > 5 mm did not affect the outcome, but no patient with tumors , 5 mm had mortality related to PMC. CONCLUSIONS Despite the overall excellent prognosis for patients with PMC, PMC was associated with a 1.0% disease-related mortality rate, a 5.0% LN recurrence rate, and a 2.5% distant metastasis rate. Therefore, the treatment of patients with PMC should be no different from the treatment of patients with conventional PTC: i.e., complete surgery with consideration for RAI and/or external radiation therapy if poor prognostic factors are present.     Early Postnatal Exposure to Alcohol Reduces the Number of Neurons in the Occipital but Not the Parietal Cortex of the Rat

    Background: The rat brain undergoes a period of rapid growth in the early postnatal period. During this time, the neocortex seems to be vulnerable to ethanol injury. Subdivisions of the neocortex develop in a temporospatial gradient that is likely to determine their vulnerability to ethanol-induced damage and whether damage is permanent. Therefore, the authors investigated the effect of postnatal ethanol exposure on the neocortex and specific subregions at the cessation of exposure and in the mature brain. Methods: Four-day-old rat pups with intragastric cannulae were artificially reared from postnatal day (PN) 4 through PN9. Of 12 daily feeds, two consecutive feeds contained either ethanol (4.5 g/kg) or an isocaloric maltose/dextrin solution. On PN10 or PN115, animals were perfused intracardially, and the brains were removed. Stereological methods were used to determine the total number of neurons and glial cells in, and the volume of, the neocortex, the parietal cortex, and the occipital cortex. Results: Exposure to ethanol did not affect body or brain weight at PN10. In contrast, at PN115 forebrain weight was significantly lower in ethanol-exposed animals compared with control-treated animals. There was no effect of treatment on body weight at PN115. On PN10, neocortical volume was 15% smaller in the ethanol-exposed animals compared with controls, with no change in the total number of neurons or glial cells. Occipital cortical volume was reduced by 22% in the ethanol-exposed animals, with a significant deficit in the total number of neurons (ethanol-exposed, 2.62 × 106; gastrostomy control, 3.20 × 106). There was no effect of ethanol exposure on the total number of glial cells in the occipital cortex or on any parameter in the parietal cortex. There was also no significant effect of ethanol exposure on the occipital cortex on PN115. Conclusions: These findings provide support for the hypothesis that a specific area or cell population might be differentially vulnerable to ethanol exposure during the brain growth spurt and that cell deficits evident on PN10 may not be permanent.     Fast and Scalable CPU/GPU Collision Detection for Rigid and Deformable Surfaces

    Abstract We present a new hybrid CPU/GPU collision detection technique for rigid and deformable objects based on spatial subdivision. Our approach efficiently exploits the massive computational capabilities of modern CPUs and GPUs commonly found in off-the-shelf computer systems. The algorithm is specifically tailored to be highly scalable on both the CPU and the GPU sides. We can compute discrete and continuous external and self-collisions of non-penetrating rigid and deformable objects consisting of many tens of thousands of triangles in a few milliseconds on a modern PC. Our approach is orders of magnitude faster than earlier CPU-based approaches and up to twice as fast as the most recent GPU-based techniques. [source]


    Ray Tracing Triangular Bézier Patches

    We present a new approach to finding ray,patch intersections with triangular Bernstein,Bézier patches of arbitrary degree. This paper extends and complements on the short presentation17 . Unlike a previous approach which was based on a combination of hierarchical subdivision and a Newton,like iteration scheme21 , this work adapts the concept of Bézier clipping to the triangular domain. The problem of reporting wrong intersections, inherent to the original Bézier clipping algorithm14 , is inves-tigated and opposed to the triangular case. It turns out that reporting wrong hits is very improbable, even close to impossible, in the triangular set,up. A combination of Bézier clipping and a simple hierarchy of nested bounding volumes offers a reliable and accurate solution to the problem of ray tracing triangular Bézier patches. [source]


    Direct Manipulation and Interactive Sculpting of PDE Surfaces

    This paper presents an integrated approach and a unified algorithm that combine the benefits of PDE surfaces and powerful physics-based modeling techniques within one single modeling framework, in order to realize the full potential of PDE surfaces. We have developed a novel system that allows direct manipulation and interactive sculpting of PDE surfaces at arbitrary location, hence supporting various interactive techniques beyond the conventional boundary control. Our prototype software affords users to interactively modify point, normal, curvature, and arbitrary region of PDE surfaces in a predictable way. We employ several simple, yet effective numerical techniques including the finite-difference discretization of the PDE surface, the multigrid-like subdivision on the PDE surface, the mass-spring approximation of the elastic PDE surface, etc. to achieve real-time performance. In addition, our dynamic PDE surfaces can also be approximated using standard bivariate B-spline finite elements, which can subsequently be sculpted and deformed directly in real-time subject to intrinsic PDE constraints. Our experiments demonstrate many attractive advantages of our dynamic PDE formulation such as intuitive control, real-time feedback, and usability to the general public. [source]


    Long-Term Efficacy of Subcutaneous Sweat Gland Suction Curettage for Axillary Hyperhidrosis: A Prospective Gravimetrically Controlled Study

    BACKGROUND Subcutaneous sweat gland suction curettage (SSGSC) is gaining acceptance as a therapy for axillary hyperhidrosis. Despite its acceptance, there remains a lack of prospective data describing the efficacy and long-term outcome of SSGSC. OBJECTIVE We examined the sweat rates and patients' satisfaction of 12 months following SGSC in 28 patients with axillary hyperhidrosis. METHODS Axillary sweat rates were determined by semiquantitative gravimetry. A questionnaire was used to determine patients' satisfaction. RESULTS A 58% reduction in sweat rate under resting conditions and an 85% reduction during aerobic exercise in sweat rates was observed. A subdivision of patients into three groups based on their baseline preoperative sweat rates (<25, 25,50, and >50 mg/min) showed that patients with resting sweat rates over 25 mg/min benefited particularly from this procedure, whereas patients with less than 25 mg/min did not. CONCLUSION SSGSC produces a significant reduction in the preoperative sweat rates. A low complication rate and a high degree of patient satisfaction were observed. Long-term follow-up evaluations demonstrate a low number of relapses, making SSGSC a convenient and satisfactory method of treating axillary hyperhidrosis. It should be considered in patients refractory to conventional therapies with baseline sweat rates greater than 25 mg/min. [source]


    The mechanism of Drosophila leg development along the proximodistal axis

    During development of higher organisms, most patterning events occur in growing tissues. Thus, unraveling the mechanism of how growing tissues are patterned into final morphologies has been an essential subject of developmental biology. Limb or appendage development in both vertebrates and invertebrates has attracted great attention from many researchers for a long time, because they involve almost all developmental processes required for tissue patterning, such as generation of the positional information by morphogen, subdivision of the tissue into distinct parts according to the positional information, localized cell growth and proliferation, and control of adhesivity, movement and shape changes of cells. The Drosophila leg development is a good model system, upon which a substantial amount of knowledge has been accumulated. In this review, the current understanding of the mechanism of Drosophila leg development is described. [source]


    Hypotonic buffer induces meiosis and formation of anucleate cytoplasmic islands in the egg of the two-spotted cricket Gryllus bimaculatus

    In insects, egg activation is known to occur in vivo and independently of fertilization, but its mechanisms are poorly understood. To gain understanding of these mechanisms, an attempt was made to activate the egg of Gryllus bimaculatus in vitro. It was found that meiosis resumed and was completed in unfertilized eggs treated with hypotonic buffer. Early developmental processes in activated, unfertilized eggs were investigated and compared with those in fertilized eggs. Mitosis did not progress, resulting in formation of anucleate cytoplasmic islands (pseudoenergids). Development in the activated, unfertilized eggs stopped at this stage and both yolk subdivision and cellularization did not occur. To elucidate the role of the nucleus in the developmental process to the syncytial stage in fertilized eggs, eggs were treated with aphidicolin to inhibit DNA polymerization. It was found that pseudoenergids also formed in these aphidicolin-treated fertilized eggs. These results demonstrate that pseudoenergids can increase in number independently of nuclei, suggesting that the cytoplasm rather than the nucleus plays the primary role in development to the syncytial stage in G. bimaculatus.     Development and topography of the lateral olfactory tract in the mouse: Imaging by genetically encoded and injected fluorescent markers

    Abstract In mammals, conventional odorants are detected by OSNs located in the main olfactory epithelium of the nose. These neurons project their axons to glomeruli, which are specialized structures of neuropil in the olfactory bulb. Within glomeruli, axons synapse onto dendrites of projection neurons, the mitral and tufted (M/T) cells. Genetic approaches to visualize axons of OSNs expressing a given odorant receptor have proven very useful in elucidating the organization of these projections to the olfactory bulb. Much less is known about the development and connectivity of the lateral olfactory tract (LOT), which is formed by axons of M/T cells connecting the olfactory bulb to central neural regions. Here, we have extended our genetic approach to mark M/T cells of the main olfactory bulb and their axons in the mouse, by targeted insertion of IRES-tauGFP in the neurotensin locus. In NT-GFP mice, we find that M/T cells of the main olfactory bulb mature and project axons as early as embryonic day 11.5. Final innervation of central areas is accomplished before the end of the second postnatal week. M/T cell axons that originate from small defined areas within the main olfactory bulb, as visualized by localized injections of fluorescent tracers in wild-type mice at postnatal days 1 to 3, follow a dual trajectory: a branch of tightly packed axons along the dorsal aspect of the LOT, and a more diffuse branch along the ventral aspect. The dorsal, but not the ventral, subdivision of the LOT exhibits a topographical segregation of axons coming from the dorsal versus ventral main olfactory bulb. The NT-GFP mouse strain should prove useful in further studies of development and topography of the LOT, from E11.5 until 2 weeks after birth. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     Secular trends, disease maps and ecological analyses of the incidence of childhood onset Type 1 diabetes in Northern Ireland, 1989,2003

    Abstract Aims To investigate secular trends in the incidence of Type 1 diabetes in Northern Ireland over the period 1989,2003. To highlight geographical variations in the incidence of Type 1 diabetes by producing disease maps and to compare incidence rates by relevant area characteristics. Methods New cases of Type 1 diabetes in children aged 0,14 years in Northern Ireland were prospectively registered from 1989 to 2003. Standardized incidence rates were calculated and secular trends investigated. Bayesian methodology was used to produce maps of disease incidence using small geographical areas (582 electoral wards). Ecological analyses were conducted using Poisson regression to investigate incidence rates by area characteristics at a finer geographical subdivision (5022 census output areas). Results In Northern Ireland during 1989,2003, there were 1433 new cases, giving a directly standardized incidence rate of 24.7 per 100 000 person-years. This incidence rate increased by a mean of 4.2% per annum. Disease maps highlighted higher incidence rates in the predominately rural north-east of the province and lower incidence rates in the urban areas around Belfast in the east and Derry in the north-west of the province. Ecological analysis identified higher incidence in rural areas (P < 0.001), areas with low migration rates (P = 0.002), affluent areas (P < 0.0001), sparsely populated areas (P = 0.0001) and remote areas (P = 0.005). Conclusions In Northern Ireland the incidence of Type 1 diabetes is increasing. The observed higher incidence in rural, affluent, sparsely populated and remote areas may reflect a reduced or delayed exposure to infections in these areas. [source]


    Tracing recent invasions of the Ponto-Caspian mysid shrimp Hemimysis anomala across Europe and to North America with mitochondrial DNA

    ABSTRACT The mysid crustacean Hemimysis anomala (,bloody-red shrimp') is one of the most recent participants in the invasion of European inland waters by Ponto-Caspian species. Recently the species also became established in England and the Laurentian Great Lakes of North America. Using information from mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene sequences, we traced the invasion pathways of H. anomala; the inferences were enabled by the observed phylogeographical subdivision among the source area populations in the estuaries of the Ponto-Caspian basin. The data distinguish two routes to northern and western Europe used by distinct lineages. One route has been to and through the Baltic Sea and further to the Rhine delta, probably from a population intentionally introduced to a Lithuanian water reservoir from the lower Dnieper River (NW Black Sea area) in 1960. The other lineage is derived from the Danube delta and has spread across the continent up the Danube River and further through the Main,Danube canal down to the Rhine River delta. Only the Danube lineage was found in England and in North America. The two lineages appear to have met secondarily and are now found intermixed at several sites in NW Europe, including the Rhine and waters linked with the man-made Mittellandkanal that interconnects the Rhine and Baltic drainage systems.     Origin and palaeo-environments of calcareous sediments in the Moshaweng dry valley, southeast Botswana

    Abstract Quaternary sedimentation in the Moshaweng dry valley of southeastern Botswana is evaluated on the basis of geomorphological evolution and sedimentological analyses. Stratigraphic evidence reveals an upper surface (1095 m) containing abundant sil-calcrete, an intermediate surface (1085 m) in which sil-calcrete underlies nodular calcrete and lower (1075 m) surface in which sil-calcrete and nodular calcrete are interbedded. This subdivision is reflected in the geochemical composition of the sediments which show an overall trend of decreasing SiO2 content (and increasing CaCO3 content) with depth from the highest to the lowest surface levels. The calcretes and sil-calcretes represent modifications of pre-existing detrital Kalahari Group sand and basal Kalahari pebbles which thinned over a Karoo bedrock high. Modification took place during wet periods when abundant Ca++ -rich groundwater flowed along the structurally aligned valley system. With the onset of drier conditions, water table fluctuations led to the precipitation of nodular calcretes in the phreatic layer to a depth of about 20 m. A major geochemical change resulted in the preferential silicification of the nodular calcrete deposits. Conditions for silica mobilization may be related to drying-induced salinity and in situ geochemical differentiation brought about by pebble dissociation towards the top of the sediment pile. As calcretization and valley formation progressed to lower levels, silica release took place on a diminishing scale. Thermoluminescence dating infers a mid-Pleistocene age for sil-calcrete formation suggesting that valley evolution and original calcrete precipitation are much older. Late stage dissolution of CaCO3 from pre-existing surface calcretes or sil-calcretes led to the formation of pedogenic case-hardened deposits during a time of reduced flow through the Moshaweng system possibly during the upper or late Pleistocene.     Postflood movements and population connectivity in gambusia (Gambusia holbrooki)

    Abstract , A population of the exotic pest fish Gambusia holbrooki inhabiting a drainage channel was sampled regularly to record responses to flooding and subsequent population reestablishment. The flood reduced numbers in the channel to near-zero levels. After remaining very low for 2 months, densities increased steadily through juvenile recruitment and the concentration of fish in drying pools. Tagging revealed that in general, movements between pools separated by only a few metres were relatively limited. There was evidence for habitat segregation and population subdivision, as fish from different pools varied markedly in terms of mean population density, movement behaviour, sex and size composition and juvenile recruitment. The most favoured pool was relatively deep, well lit and had the greatest habitat diversity. Gambusia control measures are likely to be most effective if timed to coincide with floods (which reduce local population densities) and/or droughts (which concentrate fish and allow targeting of source populations).     Estimating within-field variation using a nonparametric density algorithm

    Abstract The application of site-specific techniques and technologies in precision farming requires subdividing a field into a generally small number of contiguous homogeneous zones. The proposed algorithm of clustering is based on nonparametric density estimate, where a cluster is defined as a region surrounding a local maximum of the probability density function. Soil samples were collected in a 2-ha field of the experimental farm of the Agricultural Research Institute, located in Foggia (Southern Italy) and some of the most production-affecting soil properties were interpolated by using the geostatistical techniques of kriging and cokriging. The application of the clustering approach to the (co)kriged surface variables produced the subdivision of the field into five distinct classes. The proposed algorithm proves quite promising in identifying spatially contiguous zones, which are more homogeneous in soil properties than the whole-field. Its great advantage consists in giving an additional description of the residual variation within the class and such a piece of information is very useful in precision farming as a basis for the variable-rate application of agronomic inputs.     Functional subdivision of feline spinal interneurons in reflex pathways from group Ib and II muscle afferents; an update

    Abstract A first step towards understanding the operation of a neural network is identification of the populations of neurons that contribute to it. Our aim here is to reassess the basis for subdivision of adult mammalian spinal interneurons that mediate reflex actions from tendon organs (group Ib afferents) and muscle spindle secondary endings (group II afferents) into separate populations. Re-examining the existing experimental data, we find no compelling reasons to consider intermediate zone interneurons with input from group Ib afferents to be distinct from those co-excited by group II afferents. Similar patterns of distributed input have been found in subpopulations that project ipsilaterally, contralaterally or bilaterally, and in both excitatory and inhibitory interneurons; differences in input from group I and II afferents to individual interneurons showed intra- rather than inter-population variation. Patterns of reflex actions evoked from group Ib and II afferents and task-dependent changes in these actions, e.g. during locomotion, may likewise be compatible with mediation by premotor interneurons integrating information from both group I and II afferents. Pathological changes after injuries of the central nervous system in humans and the lineage of different subclasses of embryonic interneurons may therefore be analyzed without need to consider subdivision of adult intermediate zone interneurons into subpopulations with group Ib or group II input. We propose renaming these neurons ,group I/II interneurons'. [source]


    Excitatory actions of substance P in the rat lateral posterior nucleus

    Abstract The lateral posterior nucleus (LP) receives inputs from both neocortex and superior colliculus (SC), and is involved with integration and processing of higher-level visual information. Relay neurons in LP contain tachykinin receptors and are innervated by substance P (SP)-containing SC neurons and by layer V neurons of the visual cortex. In this study, we investigated the actions of SP on LP relay neurons using whole-cell recording techniques. SP produced a graded depolarizing response in LP neurons along the rostro-caudal extent of the lateral subdivision of LP nuclei (LPl), with a significantly larger response in rostral LPl neurons compared with caudal LPl neurons. In rostral LPl, SP (5,2000 nm) depolarized nearly all relay neurons tested (> 98%) in a concentration-dependent manner. Voltage-clamp experiments revealed that SP produced an inward current associated with a decreased conductance. The inward current was mediated primarily by neurokinin receptor (NK)1 tachykinin receptors, although significantly smaller inward currents were produced by specific NK2 and NK3 receptor agonists. The selective NK1 receptor antagonist RP67580 attenuated the SP-mediated response by 71.5% and was significantly larger than the attenuation of the SP response obtained by NK2 and NK3 receptor antagonists, GR159897 and SB222200, respectively. The SP-mediated response showed voltage characteristics consistent with a K+ conductance, and was attenuated by Cs+, a K+ channel blocker. Our data suggest that SP may modulate visual information that is being processed and integrated in the LPl with inputs from collicular sources. [source]


    Covariance-based subdivision of the human striatum using T1-weighted MRI

    Abstract The striatum plays a key role in many cognitive and emotional processes, and displays an intricate pattern of connectivity with cortical and subcortical structures. Invasive tracing work in rats and non-human primates demonstrates that the striatum can be segregated into subregions based on similar clustering of input and output fibers. In contrast, the human striatum is typically segregated according to local anatomical landmarks without considering natural boundaries formed by functional/anatomical networks. Here, we used non-invasive magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in young, healthy adults to define subregions of the human striatum based on volume correlations with other subcortical and cortical structures. We present three methods to delineate anatomical volumetric correlations based on gray matter content estimated from T1-weighted MR images. We observed both consistencies with and divergences from invasive tracing work in animals, suggesting that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based covariance likely does not correspond to direct anatomical connections, although it might index other forms of connectivity or tissue type similarity. These novel approaches may be useful in understanding connectivity of other regions, and changes in connectivity in patient or ageing populations. [source]


    Involvement of the human frontal eye field and multiple parietal areas in covert visual selection during conjunction search

    Abstract Searching for a target object in a cluttered visual scene requires active visual attention if the target differs from distractors not by elementary visual features but rather by a feature conjunction. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in human subjects to investigate the functional neuroanatomy of attentional mechanisms employed during conjunction search. In the experimental condition, subjects searched for a target defined by a conjunction of colour and orientation. In the baseline condition, subjects searched for a uniquely coloured target, regardless of its orientation. Eye movement recordings outside the scanner verified subjects' ability to maintain fixation during search. Reaction times indicated that the experimental condition was attentionally more demanding than the baseline condition. Differential activations between conditions were therefore ascribed to top-down modulation of neural activity. The frontal eye field, the ventral precentral sulcus and the following posterior parietal regions were consistently activated: (i) the postcentral sulcus; (ii) the posterior; and (iii) the anterior part of the intraparietal sulcus; and (iv) the junction of the intraparietal with the transverse occipital sulcus. Parietal regions were spatially distinct and displayed differential amplitudes of signal increase with a maximal amplitude in the posterior intraparietal sulcus. Less consistent activation was found in the lateral fusiform gyrus. These results suggest an involvement of the human frontal eye field in covert visual selection of potential targets during search. These results also provide evidence for a subdivision of posterior parietal cortex in multiple areas participating in covert visual selection, with a major contribution of the posterior intraparietal sulcus.     Chewing efficiency of pre-orthognathic surgery patients: selection and breakage of food particles

    Comminution of food is the composite result of selection and breakage. Selection is characterised by the chance that a food particle will at least be damaged by the teeth during chewing. For any size, this chance equals the ratio between the weight of damaged or broken particles and that of all initial particles. The breakage process refers to fracturing of selected particles. The aim was to examine whether a reduced chewing performance of pre-orthognathic surgery patients is due to an impairment of selection, breakage or both. Eight cubes of 8.0 mm of the silicone-rubber Optosil® were used as a test food to determine chewing efficiency for 12 patients (skeletal Angle Class II and dental Angle Class II, subdivision 1) and 12 controls (class I molar relation). Selection and breakage were determined in one-chew experiments using various particle sizes. Chewing efficiency was significantly lower for the patients than for the controls. The selection chance was significantly smaller for the patients, in particular for smaller (,4.8 mm) particles. The degree of breakage was lower for the patients, in particular for medium-sized particles of 4.8 mm. These findings suggest that the reduced chewing performance of pre-orthognathic surgery patients is due to an impairment of both selection and breakage. [source]


    A precise method for the impedance calculation of a power rail taking into account the skin effect and complex geometry

The proposed method also allows the current distribution over the rail cross-section to be determined. A numerical technique that is able to economize on the number of subconductors required to achieve a prescribed level of accuracy, is also proposed to reduce computation time and matrix dimensions.     BACKGROUND MATCHING AND COLOR-CHANGE PLASTICITY IN COLONIZING FRESHWATER SCULPIN POPULATIONS FOLLOWING RAPID DEGLACIATION

    Anthropogenic-induced change is forcing organisms to shift their distributions and colonize novel habitats at an increasing rate, which leads to complex interactions among evolutionary processes. Coastrange sculpin (Cottus aleuticus) have colonized recently deglaciated streams of Glacier Bay in Alaska within the last 220 years. We examined divergence among populations in background matching coloration and tested the hypothesis that observed variation is due to morphological color plasticity. To examine how color-change plasticity has interacted with other evolutionary processes, we also determined the influence of colonization on neutral genetic diversity. We observed clinal variation in substrate-matching fish color along the chronological continuum of streams. Microsatellites provided little evidence of genetic subdivision among sculpin populations. Fish color was significantly correlated to substrate color, but was not correlated to neutral population genetic structure. Furthermore, a laboratory experiment revealed that morphological color plasticity could explain much, but not all, of the observed fish color divergence. Our study demonstrates that sculpin in Glacier Bay have colonized and adapted to recently deglaciated habitat and suggests that color change plasticity has aided in this process. This research, therefore, highlights the important role phenotypic plasticity may play in the adaptation of species to rapid climate change. [source]


    EVOLUTION OF INCOMPATIBILITY-INDUCING MICROBES IN SUBDIVIDED HOST POPULATIONS

    Many insects, other arthropods, and nematodes harbor maternally inherited bacteria inducing "cytoplasmic incompatibility" (CI), reduced egg hatch when infected males mate with uninfected females. Although CI drives the spread of these microbes, selection on alternative, mutually compatible strains in panmictic host populations does not act directly on CI intensity but favors higher "effective fecundity," the number of infected progeny an infected female produces. We analyze the consequences of host population subdivision using deterministic and stochastic models. In subdivided populations, effective fecundity remains the primary target of selection. For strains of equal effective fecundity, if population density is regulated locally (i.e., "soft selection"), variation among patches in infection frequencies may induce change in the relative frequencies of the strains. However, whether this change favors stronger incompatibility depends on initial frequencies. Demographic fluctuations maintain frequency variation that tends to favor stronger incompatibility. However, this effect is weak; even with small patches, minute increases in effective fecundity can offset substantial decreases in CI intensity. These results are insensitive to many details of host life cycle and migration and to systematic outbreeding or inbreeding within patches. Selection acting through transfer between host species may be required to explain the prevalence of CI. [source]
