A Strategic Analysis of Product Recalls: The Role of Moral Degradation and Organizational Control

MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION REVIEW, Issue 2 2008
Yadong Luo
abstract Although product recalls are neither new nor unique to China, China bears much of the bitter criticism from the media and negative reactions from the public. This essay discusses the reasons behind recalls from a moral degradation perspective, grounded in the larger framework of anomie theory. While making remarkable economic progress, China is also moving toward a society with degraded moral standards. This moral degradation propels illicit and immoral business practices. This essay further presents an analysis of recall from the organizational control perspective, tackling the issue of how safety and quality problems damage a firm's long-term corporate credibility, legitimacy, trust and governance in a competitive environment. Strategic repercussions of recalls include impairing capability building, organizational learning and resource allocation. The essay ends with a call for action by the Chinese government, firms and management researchers to address and further understand this complex issue. [source]

Using Service-Customer Matrices in Strategic Analysis of Nonprofits

NONPROFIT MANAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP, Issue 4 2000
Anthony E. Boardman
This article demonstrates the value of service-customer matrices (SCMs) for managers performing strategic analysis of nonprofit organizations (NPOs). Some of the benefits of using SCMs are understanding the portfolio of businesses; clarifying what sponsors and clients value; identifying rivals, key attributes, and revenues on a service-customer segment basis; and understanding and formulating positioning strategy. Verbund-Simulation , Strategic Planning and Optimization of Integrated Production Networks

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY (CET), Issue 4 2010
T. Viere
Abstract Strategic analysis and optimization of highly integrated production networks is an essential requirement for cost-effective and resource-efficient production. This paper presents a comprehensive software-based concept for modeling, simulation, optimization, and visualization of an integrated silicone production network of Wacker Chemie AG. A Verbund-Model was implemented in a step-by-step approach, starting with primary material streams in one business unit up to the modeling of all energy, waste, and cost streams in several business units. The system's flexibility enables different levels of detail for modeling processes and parts of the network: from simple input-output relations to complex, nonlinear equations and specifications. The proactive implementation of technical measures and projects based on the assessment of future scenarios is an important outcome of the Verbund-simulation. [source]

DISRUPTING ILLEGAL FIREARMS MARKETS IN BOSTON: THE EFFECTS OF OPERATION CEASEFIRE ON THE SUPPLY OF NEW HANDGUNS TO CRIMINALS,

CRIMINOLOGY AND PUBLIC POLICY, Issue 4 2005
ANTHONY A. BRAGA
Research Summary: The question of whether the illegal firearms market serving criminals and juveniles can be disrupted has been vigorously debated in policy circles and in the literature on firearms and violence. To the extent that prohibited persons, in particular, are supplied with guns through systematic gun trafficking, focused regulatory and investigative resources may be useful in disrupting the illegal supply of firearms to criminals. In Boston, a gun market disruption strategy was implemented that focused on shutting down illegal diversions of new handguns from retail sources. Multivariate regression analyses were used to estimate the effects of the intervention on new handguns recovered in crime. Our results suggest that focused enforcement efforts, guided by strategic analyses of ATF firearms trace data, can have significant impacts on the illegal supply of new handguns to criminals. Policy Implications: The problem-oriented policing approach provides an appropriate framework to uncover the complex mechanisms at play in illicit firearms markets and to develop tailor-made interventions to disrupt the illegal gun trade. Strategic enforcement programs focused on the illegal diversion of new firearms from primary markets can reduce the availability of new guns to criminals. However, the extent to which criminals substitute older guns for new guns and move from primary markets to secondary markets in response to an enforcement strategy focused on retail outlets remains unclear. Our evaluation also does not provide policy makers with any firm evidence on whether supply-side enforcement strategies have any measurable impacts on gun violence. Jurisdictions suffering from gun violence problems should implement demand-side violence prevention programs to complement their supply-side efforts. [source]
