Structure System (structure + system)
Selected AbstractsCategorical abstract algebraic logic: The Diagram and the Reduction Operator LemmasMLQ- MATHEMATICAL LOGIC QUARTERLY, Issue 2 2007George Voutsadakis Abstract The study of structure systems, an abstraction of the concept of first-order structures, is continued. Structure systems have algebraic systems as their algebraic reducts and their relational component consists of a collection of relation systems on the underlying functors. An analog of the expansion of a first-order structure by constants is presented. Furthermore, analogs of the Diagram Lemma and the Reduction Operator Lemma from the theory of equality-free first-order structures are provided in the framework of structure systems. First, a decentralized approach is presented for damage detection of substructures of an MDOF structure system by using neural networks. The displacement and velocity measurements from a substructure of a healthy structure system and the restoring force corresponding to this substructure are used to train the decentralized detection neural networks for the purpose of identifying the corresponding substructure. By using the trained decentralized detection neural networks, the difference of the interstory restoring force between the damaged substructures and the undamaged substructures can be calculated. An evaluation index, that is, relative root mean square (RRMS) error, is presented to evaluate the condition of each substructure for the purpose of health monitoring. Although neural networks have been widely used for nonparametric identification, in this paper, the decentralized parametric evaluation neural networks for substructures are trained for parametric identification. Based on the trained decentralized parametric evaluation neural networks and the RRMS error of substructures, the structural parameter of stiffness of each subsystem can be forecast with high accuracy. The effectiveness of the decentralized parametric identification is evaluated through numerical simulations. It is shown that the decentralized parametric evaluation method has the potential of being a practical tool for a damage detection methodology applied to structure-unknown smart civil structures. Both kinematic interaction (KI) and inertial interaction effects are considered. The sub-structure method is used in which the structure is modeled by a simplified single degree of freedom system with idealized bilinear behavior. Besides, the soil sub-structure is considered as a homogeneous half-space and is modeled by a discrete model based on the concept of cone models. The foundation is modeled as a rigid cylinder embedded in the soil with different embedment ratios. The soil, structure system is then analyzed subjected to a suit of 24 selected accelerograms recorded on alluvium deposits. An extensive parametric study is performed for a wide range of the introduced non-dimensional key parameters, which control the problem. It is concluded that foundation embedment may increase the structural demands for slender buildings especially for the case of relatively soft soils. However, the increase in ductility demands may not be significant for shallow foundations with embedment depth to radius of foundation ratios up to one. Comparing the results with and without inclusion of KI reveals that the rocking input motion due to KI plays the main role in this phenomenon. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Ichimura Abstract Structural safety for earthquake waves emitted from a nearby fault is a major concern. For a large complex structure, it might be desired to estimate its seismic response by analyzing a fault, structure system: a full three-dimensional model in which a source fault and a target structure are modeled so that fault processes, wave propagation and amplification processes, and resulting dynamic responses of the structure can be computed numerically. To analyze this fault, structure system, this paper proposes an efficient approach based on multiscale analysis, i.e. waves emitted from the source fault are computed in the entire system in the geological length-scale; then they are refined in a small part of the system that includes the structure, and the seismic response of the structure is accurately computed in the engineering length-scale. Using a long highway tunnel as an example, this paper examines the validity of the proposed approach. The usefulness and applicability of the proposed approach to estimate the structural seismic responses are discussed. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. A three-span elevated steel bridge is selected for a case study. The peak and residual magnitude of gaps between girders and the maximum shear deformations of bearings are computed and used in the serviceability evaluation. The results show that under proper configurations the mitigation devices work effectively in reducing pounding actions in both the longitudinal and rotational directions. Koo Abstract A continuum model for the interaction analysis of a fully coupled soil, pile, structure system under seismic excitation is presented in this paper. Only horizontal shaking induced by harmonic SH waves is considered so that the soil, pile, structure system is under anti-plane deformation. The soil mass, pile and superstructure were all considered as elastic with hysteretic damping, while geometrically both pile and structures were simplified as a beam model. Buildings of various heights in Hong Kong designed to resist wind load were analysed using the present model. It was discovered that the acceleration of the piled-structures at ground level can, in general, be larger than that of a free-field shaking of the soil site, depending on the excitation frequency. For typical piled-structures in Hong Kong, the amplification factor of shaking at the ground level does not show simple trends with the number of storeys of the superstructure, the thickness and the stiffness of soil, and the stiffness of the superstructure if number of storeys is fixed. The effect of pile stiffness on the amplification factor of shaking is, however, insignificant. Thus, simply increasing the pile size or the superstructure stiffness does not necessarily improve the seismic resistance of the soil, pile, structure system; on the contrary, it may lead to excessive amplification of shaking for the whole system. Toorani Abstract This paper presents a semi-analytical investigation of a fluid, structure system. Both isotropic and composite cylindrical shells filled with or subjected to a flowing fluid have been considered in this study. The structure may be uniform or non-uniform in the circumferential direction. The hybrid finite element approach, shearable shell theory and velocity potential flow theory have been combined to establish the dynamic equations of the coupled system. The set of matrices describing their relative contributions to equilibrium is determined by exact analytical integration of the equilibrium equations. The linear potential flow theory is applied to describe the fluid effects that lead to the inertial, centrifugal and Coriolis forces. The axisymmetric, beam-like and shell modes of vibrations in both cases of uniform and non-uniform cylindrical shells are investigated. Fluid elastic stability of a structure subjected to a flowing fluid is also studied. This theory yields the high and the low eigenvalues and eigenmodes with comparably high accuracy. Reasonable agreement is found with other theories and experiments. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Black-box position and attitude tracking for underwater vehicles by second-order sliding-mode techniqueINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ROBUST AND NONLINEAR CONTROL, Issue 14 2010Giorgio Bartolini Abstract In this work we address the tracking control problems for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The proposed solution is based on the variable structure systems (VSS) theory and, in particular, on the second-order sliding-mode (2-SM) methodology. The tuning of the controller is carried out via black-box approach, dispensing with the knowledge of the actual AUV parameters, by simply progressively increasing a single gain parameter. The presented stability analysis includes explicitly the unmodelled actuator dynamics and the presence of external uncertain disturbances. The good performance of the proposed scheme is verified by means of simulations on a 6-DOF AUV. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
