Comparative Characterization of PP Nano- and Microcomposites by In-Mold Shrinkage Measurements and Structural Characteristics

Abstract Poly(propylene)-clay nanocomposites and poly(propylene) containing conventional inorganic fillers such as calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and glass fiber were used in a comparative study focusing on dimensional stability, structure, mechanical and thermal properties. Micro- and nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending in a twin-screw extruder. The relative influence of each filler was observed from dimensional stability measurements and structural analysis by WAXD, TEM, and thermal and mechanical properties. At equal filler loadings, PP/clay nanocomposites exhibit an improvement in dimensional stability and were the only composites capable of reduced shrinkage in both in-flow and cross-flow directions. The flexural modulus of PP increased nearly 20% by compounding with 4% organoclay, as compared to a similar performance obtained by compounding with 10 wt.-% of CaCO3 or approximately 6 wt.-% of glass fiber. The HDT and thermal stability of PP were enhanced by using nanoclay as filler. [source]


Molar Mass and Structural Characteristics of Poly[(lactide- co -(aspartic acid)] Block Copolymers

Abstract Summary: We report on various synthetic procedures for the preparation of biodegradable and biocompatible poly(lactide- co -aspartic acid) block copolymers based on natural monomeric units , lactic acid and aspartic acid. Multiblock poly(lactide- co -aspartic acid) copolymers of different comonomer composition were synthesized by heating a mixture of L-aspartic acid and L,L-lactide in melt without the addition of any catalyst or solvent and with further alkaline hydrolysis of the cyclic succinimide rings to aspartic acid units. Diblock poly(lactide- co -aspartic acid) copolymers with different block lengths were prepared by copolymerization of amino terminated poly(, -benzyl-L-aspartate) homopolymer and L,L-lactide with subsequent deprotection of the benzyl protected carboxyl group by hydrogenolysis. The differences in the structure, composition, molar mass characteristics, and water-solubility of the synthesized multiblock and diblock poly(lactide- co -aspartic acid) copolymers are discussed. Image Theory, Social Identity, and Social Dominance: Structural Characteristics and Individual Motives Underlying International Images

The present study provides an empirical test of international relations image theory and extends the theory by emphasizing that individuals' social identity and social dominance motives contribute to such images. One hundred forty-five Lebanese participants completed a survey that assessed their perceptions of U.S.-Lebanese relations, the images they have of the United States, their social identities, and their social dominance orientations. Participants were more likely to hold the barbarian image of the United States than the enemy, imperialist, or ally images. Participants also tended to perceive the United States as having relatively superior power, inferior cultural status, and goals that are incompatible with those of Lebanon. Consistent with image theory predictions, this constellation of structural perceptions was associated with stronger endorsement of the barbarian image. Furthermore, participants were more likely to endorse the barbarian image of the United States the more they identified with Arabs and Palestinians, the less they identified with Christians and the Western world, and the lower their social dominance orientation. Results highlight the importance of considering both structural characteristics and individual motives underlying international images and demonstrate the need for scholars to move beyond the enemy image of nations when describing international relations. Photosynthetic Eukaryotes of Freshwater Wetland Biofilms: Adaptations and Structural Characteristics of the Extracellular Matrix in the Green Alga, Cosmarium reniforme (Zygnematophyceae, Streptophyta)

ABSTRACT. Cosmarium reniforme (Zygnematophyceae, Streptophyta) is a green alga that is commonly found in biofilms of wetlands of the Adirondack region, NY (USA). Two distinctive characteristics that are critical to this alga's survival in a benthic biofilm are its elaborate cell morphology and extracellular matrix (ECM). In this study, ultrastructural, immunocytochemical, and experimental methodologies were employed in order to elucidate the cellular characteristics that are critical for survival in a biofilm. The ECM consists of a thick, outwardly lobed cell wall (CW), which contains a patterned network of structurally complex pores. Each pore consists of a narrow channel, terminating internally at a bulb that invaginates localized regions of the plasma membrane. The outer region of the pore contains arabinogalactan protein-like and extensin epitopes that are likely involved in adhesion mechanisms of the cell. External to the CW is the extracellular polymeric substance that is employed in ensheathment of the cell to the substrate and in gliding motility. The architectural design/biochemical make-up of the CW and a secretory system that encompasses the coordinated activities of the endomembrane and cytomotile/cytoskeletal systems provide the organism with effective mechanisms to support life within the biofilm complex. Basic Types and Structural Characteristics of Uplifts: An Overview of Sedimentary Basins in China

Abstract: The uplift is a positive structural unit of the crust It is an important window for continental dynamics owing to its abundant structural phenomena, such as fault, fold, unconformity and denudation of strata. Meanwhile, it is the very place to store important minerals like oil, natural gas, coal and uranium. Giant and large-scale oil and gas fields in China, such as the Daqing Oilfield, Lunnan-Tahe Oilfield, Penglai 19,3 Oilfield, Puguang Gas Field and Jingbian Gas Field, are developed mainly on uplifts. Therefore, it is the main target both for oil and gas exploration and for geological study. The uplift can be either a basement uplift, or one developed only in the sedimentary cover. Extension, compression and wrench or their combined forces may give rise to uplifts. The development process of uplifting, such as formation, development, dwindling and destruction, can be taken as the uplifting cycle. The uplifts on the giant Precambrian cratons are large in scale with less extensive structural deformation. The uplifts on the medium- and small-sized cratons or neo-cratons are formed in various shapes with strong structural deformation and complicated geological structure. Owing to changes in the geodynamic environment, uplift experiences a multi-stage or multi-cycle development process. Its geological structure is characterized in superposition of multi-structural layers. Based on the basement properties, mechanical stratigraphy and development sequence, uplifts can be divided into three basic types , the succession, superposition and destruction ones. The succession type is subdivided into the maintaining type and the lasting type. The superposition type can be subdivided into the composite anticlinal type, the buried-hill draped type, the faulted uplift type and the migration type according to the different scales and superimposed styles of uplifts in different cycles. The destruction type is subdivided into the tilting type and the negative inverted type. The development history of uplifts and their controlling effects on sedimentation and fluids are quite different from one another, although the uplifts with different structural types store important minerals. Uplifts and their slopes are the main areas for oil and gas accumulation. They usually become the composite oil and gas accumulation zones (belts) with multiple productive formations and various types of oil and gas reservoirs. [source]


Structural Characteristics and Formation Mechanism in the Micangshan Foreland, South China

Abstract: Lying at the junction of the Dabashan, Longmenshan and Qinling mountains, the Micangshan Orogenic Belt coupled with a basin is a duplex structure and back-thrust triangular belt with little horizontal displacement, small thrust faults and continuous sedimentary cover. On the basis of 3D seismic data, and through sedimentary and structural research, the Micangshan foreland can be divided into five subbelts, which from north to south are: basement thrust, frontal thrust, foreland depression-back-thrust triangle, foreland fold belt or anticline belt, and the Tongjiang Depression. Along the direction of strike from west to east, the arcuate structural belt of Micangshan can be divided into west, middle and east segments. During the collision between the Qinling and Yangtze plates, the Micangshan Orogenic Belt was subjected to the interaction of three rigid terranes: Bikou, Foping, and Fenghuangshan (a.k.a. Ziyang) terranes. The collision processes of rigid terranes controlled the structural development of the Micangshan foreland, which are: (a) the former collision between the Micangshan-Hannan and Bikou terranes forming the earlier rudiments of the structure; and (b) the later collision forming the main body of the structural belt. The formation processes of the Micangshan Orogenic Belt can be divided into four stages: (1) in the early stage of the Indosinian movement, the Micangshan-Hannan Rigid Terrane was jointed to the Qinling Plate by the clockwise subduction of the Yangtze Plate toward the Qinling Plate; (2) since the late Triassic, the earlier rudiments of the Tongnanba and Jiulongshan anticlines and corresponding syncline were formed by compression from different directions of the Bikou, Foping and Micangshan-Hannan terranes; (3) in the early stage of the Himalayan movement, the Micangshan-Hannan Terrane formed the Micangshan Nappe torwards the foreland basin and the compression stresses were mainly concentrated along both its flanks, whereas the Micangshan-Hannan Terrane wedged into the Qinling Orogenic Belt with force; (4) in the late stage of the Himalayan movement, the main collision of the Qinling Plate made the old basement rocks of the terrane uplift quickly, to form the Micangshan Orogenic Belt. The Micangshan foreland arcuate structure was formed due to the non-homogeneity of terrane movement. [source]


Structural characteristics of clay-dominated soils of a marsh and a palaeosol in a crossed diagram

Summary Although the shrink-swell phenomenon of clays has been thoroughly studied, the in situ relation of the shrinkage curve to the structure profile is rarely presented from the shrinkage limit to the liquid limit. We studied the consolidated structure of clay-dominated (<2 ,m) soils formed on ,pseudo-liquid' marsh sediments in the ,Marais de l'Ouest' (France). The profiles were studied in a grassland field and in a sunflower field from unsaturated surface soils down to deeper, saturated, levels characterized by a very large water content (100% by weight). The consolidation states were quantified recording cone resistance (Qd) profiles using a dynamic penetrometer in successive seasons. These Qd profiles were compared with the associated wet density and gravimetric water-content profiles. Two consolidation depths were evident, the surface soil and a 130-cm deep palaeosol. The seasonal Qd profiles demonstrate the partial irreversibility of the consolidation peaks associated with the surface soil and with the palaeosol. The shrinkage properties were established through drying curves of undisturbed test samples. In the void ratio (e) - water content (W) and water content (W) - saturation index (Sr) diagrams, the profiles as a whole exhibit only one clay soil behaviour from their pseudo-liquid to plastic to solid states. Each Qd profile is represented by a hyperbolic curve in the e/Qd diagram. Represented in a (e , W , Qd ,Sr) crossed diagram, the vertical evolution of the successive profiles shows the soil structure behaviour from the initial pseudo-liquid sediment to the consolidated soil. A simple cone resistance recording associated with gravimetric water-content profiles, characterizes the evolution of structural layers of soils for the seasonal drying-wetting cycles, for the over-consolidation associated with the palaeosol, and also for the effect of ploughing. Structural characteristics of the cag pathogenicity island and its significance in the classification of Chinese strains of Helicobacter pylori

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the structural characteristics of the cag pathogenicity island (PAI) and its significance in the classification in Chinese strains of Helicobacter pylori. METHODS: In 107 H. pylori strains isolated from Chinese patients, cagA, cagI, cagII, the cagI,cagII junction and IS605 were studied by using the polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: The positive rates in Chinese H. pylori strains were 95.3% for cag PAI, 92.5% for cagA, 86.9% for cagI and 66.4% for cagII. There was no statistical difference among H. pylori strains from chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers or gastric carcinoma in the detectable rate of cag PAI, cagA, cagI or cagII (P > 0.05). Of the cag PAI-negative strains, four came from cases of chronic gastritis and one from a patient with cardiac cancer. The products of the cagI,cagII junction were found in only five strains. The continuous cag PAI was much more common in duodenal ulcers than in chronic gastritis (P < 0.01). The positive rates of cagI and cagII were markedly different in chronic gastritis (P < 0.05). One strain of H. pylori tested positive for cagA but negative for other regions of the cag PAI. IS605 was less common in duodenal ulcers than in chronic gastritis (P < 0.05). The amplified fragment of IS605 in one strain from a gastric carcinoma was approximately 1580 bp in size, which was much longer than that in other strains. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that the cag PAI is very common in Chinese strains of H. pylori. The structural variety of the cag PAI might be related to the virulence of H. pylori. It is suggested that H. pylori may be classified into different virulence groups according to differences in the structure of the cag PAI. [source]


Structural characteristics of university engineering students' conceptions of energy,

This study examined structural characteristics of university engineering students' conceptions of energy elicited through paragraph writing and their relations with categories of their conceptions specific to energy in solution processes identified through interviews. We found that structures of students' conceptions are characterized primarily by characteristic, example-of/type-of, and lead-to types of relations, and these relations correspond with categories of students' conceptions. More specifically, categories of students' conceptions are exclusively related to energy transformation, and students failed to apply the notion of energy conservation demonstrated in structures of their conceptions to explain the temperature change in solution processes. It is concluded that although paragraph writing and interviews solicit different student conceptions, the conceptions identified from the two sources are related and paragraph writing tends to provide a more holistic picture of students' conceptions. Structural, Electrical, Mechanical, and Thermal Properties of Electrospun Poly(lactic acid)/Polyaniline Blend Fibers

Abstract Conducting electrospun fiber mats based on PLA and PAni blends were obtained with average diameter values between 87 and 1 006,nm with PAni quantities from 0 to 5.6 wt.-%. Structural characteristics of fiber mats were compared to cast films with the same amount of PAni and studied by SEM, SAXS, and AFM. Thermal properties of fiber mats and cast films were compared by DSC analyses. Mechanical properties of fiber mats were also evaluated. It was found that electrospinning process governs the crystal structure of the fibers and strongly affects fiber properties. New properties of PLA/PAni blends are reported due to the size fiber reduction. [source]


Preparation and properties of silicone-containing poly(methyl methacrylate) gels

Abstract Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) gels with varying amounts of silicone and solvent and constant amounts of crosslinker were prepared by solution free radical crosslinking copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDM), tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES) comonomer systems. They were then studied in benzene at a total monomer concentration of 3.5 mol L,1 and 70 °C. The conversion of monomer, volume swelling ratio, weight fraction and gel point were measured as a function of the reaction time, silicone concentration and benzene content up to the onset of macrogelation. Structural characteristics of the gels were examined by using equilibrium swelling in benzene, gel fraction and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. The morphology of the copolymers was also investigated by SEM. Based on the obtained results, it was concluded that the FTIR data did not have the capacity to show the presence of the VTES or TEOS moiety in these kinds of copolymers. On the other hand, the variation of weight fraction of gel, Wg, and its equilibrium volume swelling ratio in benzene, qv, exhibited the same behaviour as that of MMA/EGDM copolymers. Also, the dilution of the monomer mixture resulted in an increase in the gel point and swelling degree and a decrease in the percent of conversion and gel fraction. Finally, TEOS is not an ideal silicone compound for reaction in the MMA/EGDM copolymerization system, whereas VTES is a suitable silicone comonomer for this system and it has been proved useful. Structural characteristics of p - t -Octylphenol formaldehyde resole resins using molecular simulation

Abstract p-t-Octylphenol formaldehyde resole resins have two linkage types of methylene- and dimethylene ether-linkages and have three terminal types of hydrogen, methylol, and o-methylene quinone. Variation of structural characteristics of the resins due to different types of linkages and terminals were studied using molecular dynamics and molecular mechanics. The structural characteristics of the methylene-bridged resins were intramolecular hydrogen bonds between hydroxyl groups of the adjacent p-t-octylphenols. In the dimethylene ether-bridged resin, the intramolecular hydrogen bonds between oxygen atoms of the dimethylene ether-linkages and hydroxyl groups of the neighboring phenolic units were found. For the resins with both methylol terminals, one of both terminals of the resins was hidden at the center of the molecule when the resin size is large. The number of hydrogen bonds in the resins with the methylol terminal was larger than for the resins with the o-methylene quinone terminal. Variation of the structural characteristics of the resins by dehydration of the terminal methylol was discussed. Synthesis, Structure, and Nonlinear Optical Properties of Cross-Conjugated Perphenylated iso -Polydiacetylenes

Abstract Monodisperse, cross-conjugated perphenylated iso- polydiacetylene (iso- PDA) oligomers, ranging from monomer 15 to pentadecamer 25, have been synthesized by using a palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling protocol. Structural characteristics elucidated by X-ray crystallographic analysis demonstrate a non-planar backbone conformation for the oligomers due to the steric interactions between alkylidene phenyl groups. The electronic absorption spectra of the oligomers show a slight red-shift of the maximum absorption wavelength as the chain length increases from dimer 17,b to pentadecamer 25, a trend that has saturated by the stage of nonamer 22. Fluorescence spectroscopy confirms that the pendent phenyl groups present on the oligomer framework enhance emission, and the relative emission intensity consistently increases as a function of chain length n. The molecular third-order nonlinearities, ,, for this oligomer series have been measured via differential optical Kerr effect (DOKE) detection and show a superlinear increase as a function of the oligomer chain length n. Molecular modeling and spectroscopic studies suggest that iso- PDA oligomers (n>7) adopt a coiled, helical conformation in solution. [source]


Catalytic Properties of Nanoscale Iron-Doped Zirconia Solid-Solution Aerogels,

Abstract Nanoscale iron-doped zirconia solid-solution aerogels are prepared via a simple ethanol thermal route using zirconyl nitrate and iron nitrate as starting materials, followed by a supercritical fluid drying process. Structural characteristics are investigated by means of powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermal analyses (TG/DTA), N2 adsorption measurements and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The results show that the resulting iron-doped solid solutions are metastable tetragonal zirconia which exhibit excellent dispersibility and high solubility of iron oxide. Further, when the Fe:(Fe+Zr) ratio x is lower than 0.10, all of the Fe3+ ions can be incorporated into ZrO2 by substituting Zr4+ to form Zr1,xFexOy solid solutions. Moreover, for the first time, an additional hydroxyl group band that is not present in pure ZrO2 is observed by DRIFTS for the Zr(Fe)O2 solid solution. This is direct evidence of Fe3+ ions incorporated into ZrO2. These Zr1,xFexOy solid solutions are excellent catalysts for the solvent-free aerobic oxidation of n -hexadecane using air as the oxidant under ambient conditions. The Zr0.8Fe0.2Oy solid-solution catalyst demonstrates the best catalytic properties, with the conversion of n -hexadecane reaching 36.2,% with 48,% selectivity for ketones and 24,% selectivity for alcohols and it can be recycled five times without significant loss of activity. A visualized analysis of small-angle neutron scattering intensity: concentration fluctuation in alcohol,water mixtures

Small-angle neutron scattering measurements have been performed on tert -butyl alcohol,water mixtures with alcohol concentrations from 0.05 to 0.30 mole fractions at 298, 313 and 328,K. Concentration fluctuations of the mixtures are analysed in terms of fractals. The structure of the concentration fluctuation is visualized by means of a large-scale reverse Monte Carlo technique. Percolation analysis of the visualized structure shows that the concentration fluctuation is characterized by polydisperse mass fractals, as found for 1-propanol,water mixtures. It seems that polydisperse mass fractals are a common structural characteristic in various alcohol,water mixtures. [source]

The interaction of some substituted coumarin derivatives with the stable 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical was analysed by means of multivariate statistics using a variety of molecular descriptors. The compounds contain a conjugated double bond system, which was considered to be an essential structural characteristic for the free-radical scavenging activity. Partial least-square analysis led to an adequate two-component model based on bulk descriptors and the electronic properties concerning atoms involved or next to the double-bond system. [source]


An analysis of predictors of team satisfaction in product development teams with differing levels of virtualness

The purpose of this study is to empirically examine and assess the moderating effects of extent of virtualness on a variety of well-established predictors of new product development team satisfaction. We focus our study on 178 different new product development teams from a variety of industries and use extent of virtualness as a structural characteristic of the teams, measuring it on a continuum. The predictors of team satisfaction we studied are relationship conflict, familiarity, goal clarity and preference for group work. Primary findings include: (1) relationship conflict has a more deleterious effect on team member satisfaction as teams become more virtual, mainly because it is very difficult for team members of virtual teams to resolve their interpersonal disputes; (2) the relationship between preference for group work and team satisfaction is moderated by extent of virtualness, such that preference for group work increases team satisfaction more as virtualness increases; (3) goal clarity and familiarity are not moderated by extent of virtualness, but have a significant direct effect on team satisfaction. Managerial and research implications of these findings relative to new product development teams are also discussed. [source]


New Fossil Palaeontinids from the Middle Jurassic of Daohugou, Inner Mongolia, China (Insecta, Hemiptera)

Abstract: Two new genera and species of fossil Palaeontinidae are described from Daohugou Village, Inner Mongolia, China: Cladocossus undulatus gen. et sp. nov. and Cricocossus paradoxus gen. et sp. nov. Both new genera are described based on well-preserved forewings. This discovery confirms the high diversity of palaeontinids during the Middle Jurassic. Both specimens have interesting modal structures which are new to Palaeontinidae: M five-branched and M3 with two branches. Based on this character, wing structural characteristic is discussed. Condition Assessment by Visual Inspection for a Bridge Management System

This article deals with a procedure for bridge condition assessment by visual inspection developed during the planning and preliminary design of the BMS for the public railway networks in Italy. The main modules adopted in the procedure are: bridge inventory, computer-aided visual inspection, automated defect catalog, and priority-ranking procedure. The probabilistic models used to calibrate the condition evaluation algorithm are discussed. Different levels of deficiency have been individuated for each class of bridge structure belonging to the managed stock. The procedure allows comparison and relative ranking of deficiency conditions across different types of bridge structures. The results of a visual inspection campaign conducted for a set of bridges with different structural characteristics are reported and evaluated within the framework of the developed BMS. [source]

Building on prior macrosocial-crime research that sought to explain either total crime rates or male rates, this study links female offending rates to structural characteristics of U.S. cities. Specifically, we go beyond previous research by: (1) gender disaggregating the Uniform Crime Report (UCR) index-crime rates (homicide, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft) across U.S. cities; (2) focusing explicitly on the effects of structural disadvantage variables on the index-offending rates of females; and (3) comparing the effects of the structural variables on female rates with those for male rates. Alternative measures of structural disadvantage are used to provide more theoretically appropriate indicators, such as gender-specific poverty and joblessness, and controls are included for age structure and structural variables related to offending. The main finding is consistent and powerful: The structural sources of high levels of female offending resemble closely those influencing male offending, but the effects tend to be stronger on male offending rates. Geomorphic and riparian forest influences on characteristics of large wood and large-wood jams in old-growth and second-growth forests in Northern Michigan, USA

Abstract Large wood (LW; pieces with diameter greater than 10 cm and length greater than 1 m) and large-wood jams (LWJs; two or more pieces of LW in contact with each other) are important components of stream ecosystems that are often distributed along stream channels in response to geomorphic and riparian forest factors that interact hierarchically. As a result, information on these relationships is valuable for predicting patterns of wood accumulation and characteristics of individual pieces of wood. We studied relationships between geomorphic and riparian factors and LW and LWJ structure in different geomorphic settings associated with old-growth and second-growth settings in Upper Michigan. We used redundancy analysis (RDA) and regression tree analysis to evaluate changes in LW and LWJ structural characteristics among geomorphic and riparian forest settings. Geomorphic factors explained 38·5% of the variability in LW and LWJ characteristics, riparian forest factors uniquely explained 18·4% of the variance and the intersection of the two categories of environmental factors (i.e. the redundant portion) was 29·8%. At the landscape scale, our multivariate analyses suggest that the presence of rock-plane bedding was an important predictor of the number of LWJs and the percent of channel spanned by LWJs. Our analyses suggest differences in relationships between geomorphic factors and LW and LWJ structure. Channel width, distance from headwaters, gradient and sinuosity were identified by regression tree analyses as the most important variables for predicting LW characteristics, while channel width and confinement were the most important variables for predicting LWJ characteristics. Old-growth settings generally contained a higher proportion of conifer and LW (both in and out of LWJs) with greater diameter and volume than in second-growth settings. Our study supports the view that restoration of wood to streams will benefit from considering the associations of wood structure with landscape and reach-scale geomorphology. Black Employment, Segregation, and the Social Organization of Metropolitan Labor Markets

Abstract: This broad analysis of the employment of blacks in metropolitan areas examines the role of residential segregation in comparison with four other key structural explanations for racial metropolitan inequality: industrial composition, minority concentration, immigration, and the racial disparity in skills. The goal of the analysis was to determine whether the spatial configuration of blacks relative to whites in a metropolitan area influences the employment rates of black men and black women in the context of the structural conditions of the local labor market. The study expanded the analysis of space and work beyond an emphasis on the physical distance between black communities and jobs to a broader conceptualization of residential segregation as a structural feature of the entire metropolitan labor market that is representative of its social organization with regard to race. Using a longitudinal data set of the structural characteristics of the 95 largest U.S. cities from the 1980, 1990, and 2000 decennial censuses, the study used a cross-sectional analysis of the cities in 2000 and a fixed-effects analysis to assess the impact of five dimensions of residential segregation and the four other structural factors on the employment of blacks across different labor markets and across time within each labor market. The results revealed that when the other structural characteristics are controlled, the employment rates of blacks are lower in more segregated cities and decrease as cities become more segregated over time. The clustering and evenness dimensions of residential segregation were the most determinative of black employment. [source]


The relationship between disinfection by-product formation and structural characteristics of humic substances in chloramination

Abstract The influence of structural characteristics of humic substances on disinfection by-product (DBP) formation was investigated for seven humic substances isolated from aquatic and terrestrial sources. The structural characterizations included 13C nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR) spectroscopy and ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy. The aqueous humic substances were chloraminated at pH 7.0 and 8.5, with and without the presence of the bromide ion, and analyzed for total organic halogen (TOX), trihalomethanes (THMs), and haloacetic acids (HAAs). Aromatic contents determined by 13C NMR and differential UV absorbance at 254 nm statistically correlated with TOX formation for the humic substances investigated at p < 0.08. In contrast, a lack of correlation was observed for THM and HAA formation and these parameters. This paper also compiles relevant literature and discusses the contrasting reaction response of DBP precursor material to chlorination and chloramination. [source]


The Variable Binding Modes of Phenylbis(pyrid-2-ylmethyl)phosphane and Bis(pyrid-2-ylmethyl) Phenylphosphonite with AgI and CuI

Abstract A series of new bridging phosphane and phosphonite structures forming three- and six-membered rings with the metal centers were synthesized and characterized. The resulting compounds of phenylbis(pyrid-2-ylmethyl)phosphane (1) with the silver(I) salts of trifluoroacetate (tfa,), tetrafluoroborate (BF4,), and trifluoromethanesulfonate (OTf,), and copper tetrakis(acetonitrile) hexafluorophosphate (PF6,) shows the flexibility of the ligand by displaying different coordination modes associated with the electronic and structural characteristics of the corresponding anion. Accordingly, ligand 1 in these complexes displays two different binding modes. With Agtfa and AgBF4 compounds 3 and 4 are obtained where the ligand chelates to two silver atoms that exhibit normalAg,Ag contacts in the range of 2.9 Å. When AgOTf or Cu(NCCH3)4PF6 are used, one molecule of 1 bridges the metal centers through a phosphorus atom while another is terminally bound. This induces short M,M distances of 2.6871 and 2.568 Å for 5 and 6, respectively. Similarly, the coordination behavior of the heterofunctional bis(pyrid-2-ylmethyl) phenylphosphonite ligand (2) is reported with Cu(NCCH3)4PF6 (7) and AgBF4 (8) to form two novel discrete molecules. In these complexes 2 coordinates through the P and N atoms, with the difference that in 7 the O atom of one of the carbinol arms is also bound to the Cu. Elemental analysis, variable-temperature multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and low-temperature luminescence studies were carried out to fully characterize the compounds. The Prospects of Carrying and Releasing Drugs Via Biodegradable Magnesium Foam,

Abstract Powder metallurgy technology was used to produce magnesium foams in order to evaluate their ability to perform as a solid biodegradable platform for drug delivery. The amount and delivery time of the released drug (gentamicin) was controlled by the level of space-holding particles (spacer) that was mixed with the magnesium powder prior to the sintering process. Metallurgical examination of the magnesium foams was carried out using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction analysis. Microtomography CT analysis was used to evaluate the structural characteristics of the magnesium foams and their internal interconnected porosity configuration. The corrosion behavior of the magnesium foams was evaluated by immersion test in a simulated physiological environment (PBS solution). The absorption of gentamicin was obtained by immersing magnesium foams in concentrated gentamicin solutions within a vacuum chamber, followed by water evaporation. The detection of gentamicin in PBS solution was carried out using a Fluorescence Polarimetry analyzer. The results show that the release profile of gentamicin from magnesium foam with 10 and 25% spacer in PBS solution was in accord with common dissolution kinetics of an active ingredient from polymeric drug delivery systems. Metastable Austenite in 17,4 Precipitation-Hardening Stainless Steel Produced by Selective Laser Melting

Abstract A 17,4 precipitation-hardening stainless steel produced by selective laser melting contains 72% metastable and heavily faulted austenite and 28% highly dislocated and twinned martensite. The mechanical behavior is characterized by exceptional work hardening and a two-step plastic field, which are due to the strain-induced transformation of austenite and to the structural characteristics of the deformed austenite and martensite. Both phases tend to accumulate stacking faults in the first step and twins in the second. [source]


Distribution and structure of the initial dental enamel formed in incisors of young wild-type and Tabby mice

Mouse incisor enamel can be divided into four layers: an inner prism-free layer; an inner enamel with prism decussation; outer enamel with parallel prisms; and a superficial prism-free layer. We wanted to study how this complex structural organization is established in the very first enamel formed in wild-type mice and also in Tabby mice where enamel coverage varies considerably. Unworn incisors from young female wild-type and Tabby mice were ground, etched, and analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. In both wild-type and Tabby mice, establishment of the enamel structural characteristics in the initially formed enamel proceeded as follows, going from the incisal tip in an apical direction: (i) a zone with prism-free enamel, (ii) a zone with occasional prisms most often inclined incisally, and (iii) a zone where prism decussation was gradually established in the inner enamel. The distribution of enamel in Tabby mice exhibited considerable variability. The sequence of initial enamel formation in mouse incisors mimics development from a primitive (prism-free) structure to an evolved structure. It is suggested that genes controlling enamel distribution are not associated with genes controlling enamel structure. The control of ameloblast configuration, life span, organization in transverse rows, and movement is important for establishing the characteristic mature pattern of mouse incisor enamel. [source]


Lobbying with conflicting interests: Norwegian local-central relations

A total of 239 interactions are studied. Survey responses by a large number of voters and politicians, as well as registry data on fiscal standing, demographics and elections are utilised. Two of the main predictions of the costly lobbying model gain support in the data. The probability of obtaining substantial discretionary funding from the central level increases: with decreasing conflict of interest between local and central politicians; and with the lobbying cost incurred by local politicians. For a given conflict and cost, however, the rate of lobbying success depends crucially on structural characteristics of the municipality. In particular, the success rate is significantly higher for poor municipalities located in national electoral districts with many seats per voter than for rich municipalities located in districts with few seats per voter. Effect of organic matter applications on 13C-NMR spectra of humic acids of soil

Summary Much attention has been paid to improving soil fertility with organic matter (OM) application, which not only deals with organic wastes and protects the environment, but also maintains soil fertility and increases crop yields. Much research has also been on the effects of OM applications on the soil's physical, chemical and biological properties, but relatively less attention has been spent on humic substance (HS). In order to clarify the mechanism of improving soil fertility by applying OM, we analysed the changes of structural characteristics of humic acid (HA) from OM applications to soils by 13C-NMR, chemical analysis, thermal analysis, optical properties, IR and fluorescence spectroscopy. Samples of a brown soil (Paleudalf) and a paddy soil (an anthropogenic soil originating from Udifluvents) were collected from the plough layer of the long-term field experiment at Shenyang Agricultural University and Liaoning Provincial Alkali-Saline Soil Institute, respectively. Both field experiments included three treatments each: (i) brown soil, zero-treatment (CKbr) and two pig manure (PM) applications (O1 and O2) at annual rates of 0.9 t ha,1 and 1.8 t ha,1 of organic carbon, respectively; and (ii) paddy soil, zero-treatment (CKpad), pig manure (Op) and rice straw (Or) at annual rates of 2.62 t ha,1 and 1.43 t ha,1 of organic carbon, respectively. An incubation experiment was also carried out to test the field experiment on the brown soil, namely four treatments: zero-treatment (CKc), and three pig manure applications at rates of 30 g kg,1 (C1), 50 g kg,1 (C2) and 70 g kg,1 (C3), respectively. The total incubation was 180 days. The results indicated that number-average molecular weights (Mn), total acidity, aromaticity, excitation maximum wavelength (,Exmax), and the heat ratio of the high to moderate temperature exothermic regions (H3/H2) of the HA all decreased after OM application. The degree of activation (AD), the absorption intensity ratio of 2920 cm,1 to 1720 cm,1 in infrared spectra (IR2920/1720), alkyl C and O-alkyl C of the HA increased. The HA structure tended to become simpler and more aliphatic. [source]
