Wavelength tuning using an arrayed waveguide gratings demultiplexer

Abstract A novel wavelength tuning method using a specially designed arrayed waveguide gratings (AWG) demultiplexer was demonstrated. It was found that the transmission wavelengths of the AWG channels change linearly with the scanning of the input fiber along the facet of the input coupler of the AWG device. Initial results showed that more than 35 nm tuning range can be achieved at resolution of picometer. Optical spectra measurement using this novel wavelength tuning method is also reported. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermal stability of porous it -PMMA thin film obtained by the extraction of st -PMAA from it -PMMA/st -PMAA stereocomplex with layer-by-layer assembly on a substrate

Abstract The functionality of porous isotactic (it) poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) thin films, which were previously developed by the selective extraction of syndiotactic (st) poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) from the it -PMMA/st -PMAA stereocomplex thin film on a substrate using the layer-by-layer assembly method was investigated after thermal treatment (70, 80, and 90 °C) in water for 4 h. Quartz crystal microbalance analysis and infrared spectra measurements revealed that the st -PMAA incorporation ability of the porous it -PMMA thin film decreased in order at 80 and 90 °C, while there was no decrease observed at 70 °C. X-ray diffraction analysis also supported the thermal stability of the porosity at 70 °C, whereas two it -PMMA crystalline peaks (2, = 9° and 14°) were generated during heating at 90 °C. The loss of the functionality of the it -PMMA thin film was thus shown to be due to crystallization, which was caused by the increase in polymer-chain mobility during the heating process. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Facilitating the hyphenation of CIEF and MALDI-MS for two-dimensional separation of proteins

Abstract Both CIEF and MALDI-MS are frequently used in protein analysis, but hyphenation of the two has not been investigated proportionally. One of the major reasons is that the additives (such as carrier ampholytes and detergent) in CIEF severely suppress the MALDI-MS signal, which hampers the hyphenation of the two. In this paper, we develop a simple means to alleviate the above signal-suppressing effect. We first deposit 1,,L of water onto a MALDI-MS target, deliver a fraction of CIEF-separated protein (,0.1,,L) to the water droplet, evaporate the solvent, add 0.5,,L of MALDI matrix to the sample spot, dry the matrix and move the target plate to a MALDI-TOF-MS for mass spectrum measurement. We optimize the droplet volume and the laser-ablation region. Under the optimized conditions, we improve the S/N by two- to tenfold. We also apply this method for 2-D separations of standard proteins and apolipoprotein A,I, a membrane protein expressed in Escherichia coli cells. [source]


UV laser-induced desorption mechanism analyzed through two-layer alkali halide samples

Abstract Time of flight-mass spectrometry (TOF-MS) is used to analyze positive and negative desorbed ions generated by UV laser ablation of several alkali (X) halide (Y) salts. Most of the observed desorbed cluster ions have the structure (XY)nX+ or (XY)nY,. Their desorption yields decrease as exp(,kn), where k , 2 for both series, suggesting that the neutral component (XY)n plays the dominant role in the desorption process. Mass spectrum measurements were performed for compound samples in which two salts (out of CsI, RbI, KBr, KCl and KI) are homogeneously mixed or disposed in two superposed layers. The detection of small new ion species and large cluster ions of the original salts supports the scenario that the uppermost layers are completely atomized while deep layers are emitted colder and fragmented: It is proposed that ns-pulsed laser induced desorption of ionic salts occurs via two sequential mechanisms: (1) ejection of cations and anions in the hot plume, followed by recombination into new cluster ions and (2) ejection of relatively cold preformed species originated from deep layers or from periphery of the irradiated region. Orientation-Control Synthesis of KTa0.25Nb0.75O3 Nanorods

Single-crystalline KTa0.25Nb0.75O3 (KTN) nanorods with an orthorhombic perovskite structure were synthesized via a polymer-assisted hydrothermal method. The preferred crystallographic orientation of the nanorods were found to be controllable by using different types of polymers in the process; that is, [001]-oriented KTN were obtained upon the use of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and [110]-oriented ones were formed with the use of a combination of polyacrylic acid and PVA. The two types of nanorods showed different properties. The [110]-oriented nanorods exhibited a better photocatalytic decolorization efficiency but very likely a lower thermal conductivity (as indicated by the Raman spectrum measurements) than the [001] nanorods. What can we learn on the thermal history of the Universe from future cosmic microwave background spectrum measurements at long wavelengths?

ABSTRACT We analyse the implications of future observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) absolute temperature at centimetre and decimetre wavelengths, where both ground, balloon and space experiments are currently under way to complement the accurate COBE/FIRAS data available at ,, 1 cm. Our analysis shows that forthcoming ground and balloon measurements will allow a better understanding of free,free distortions but will not be able to significantly improve the constraints already provided by the FIRAS data on the possible energy exchanges in the primeval plasma. The same holds even for observations with sensitivities up to ,10 times better than those of forthcoming experiments. Thus, we have studied the impact of very high-quality data, such as those, in principle, achievable with a space experiment such as the Diffuse Microwave Emission Survey (DIMES) planned to measure the CMB absolute temperature at 0.5 ,,, 15 cm with a sensitivity of ,0.1 mK, close to that of FIRAS. We have demonstrated that such high-quality data would improve by a factor of ,50 the FIRAS results on the fractional energy exchanges, ,,/,i, associated with dissipation processes possibly occurred in a wide range of cosmic epochs, at intermediate and high redshifts (yh, 1), and that the energy dissipation epoch could also be significantly constrained. By jointly considering two dissipation processes occurring at different epochs, we demonstrated that the sensitivity and frequency coverage of a DIMES -like experiment would allow one to accurately recover the epoch and the amount of energy possibly injected into the radiation field at early and intermediate epochs even in the presence of a possible late distortion, while the constraints on the energy possibly dissipated at late epochs can be improved by a factor of ,2. In addition, such measurements can provide an independent and very accurate cross-check of FIRAS calibration. Finally, a DIMES -like experiment will be able to provide indicative independent estimates of the baryon density: the product ,bH20 can be recovered within a factor of ,2,5 even in the case of (very small) early distortions with ,,/,i, (5,2) × 10,6. On the other hand, for ,b (H0/50)2, 0.2, an independent baryon density determination with an accuracy at , per cent level, comparable to that achievable with CMB anisotropy experiments, would require an accuracy of ,1 mK or better in the measurement of possible early distortions but up to a wavelength from , few × dm to ,7 dm, according to the baryon density value.
