Selected AbstractsTHE DEMAND FOR CASINO GAMING WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO A SMOKING BANECONOMIC INQUIRY, Issue 2 2008RICHARD THALHEIMER This study adds to the limited literature on the demand for casino gaming. The major focus is on the effect of a statewide smoking ban. A system of slot machine demand equations, one each for the three Delaware racinos (racetrack casinos), was developed. The number of slot machines at a racino, at competing in-state racinos, and income were significant demand determinants. Competing out-of-state gaming venues had insignificant effects on gaming demand over the study period. The smoking ban had a significant negative impact on demand, which was not significantly different across the three racinos. The smoking ban reduced gaming demand 15.9%. (JEL L83) [source] GROWTH ACCOUNTING FOR SRI LANKA'S AGRICULTURE WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO FERTILIZER AND NONAGRICULTURAL PRICES: DO POLICY REFORMS AFFECT AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT?THE DEVELOPING ECONOMIES, Issue 2 2007Mitoshi YAMAGUCHI O11; O13; O41; Q18 The agricultural sector of Sri Lanka reacted sharply to the highly contentious policy reforms called Structural Adjustment Programs. We used a four-sector general equilibrium model under a growth accounting approach to find out the effect of the policy (exogenous) variable on the target (endogenous) variable. Here, we considered only the most important variables, and the overall results indicate that policy changes are favorable to overall agricultural development, although their effect on the domestic food sector is negative. The most serious negative determinant under the policy changes relates to fertilizer, and our study indicates that fertilizer prices considerably affect agricultural production; it especially has a negative effect on domestic food production. Second, this paper analyzes the impact of nonagricultural price, finding that it positively helped the development of overall agriculture. Third, agricultural exports increased under the new policy reforms and made large contributions to agricultural production. [source] Disposable Amperometric Sensors for Thiols with Special Reference to GlutathioneELECTROANALYSIS, Issue 18 2008Dipankar Bhattacharyay Abstract The antioxidant ,reduced glutathione' tripeptide is conventionally called glutathione (GSH). The oxidized form is a sulfur-sulfur linked compound, known as glutathione disulfide (GSSG). Glutathione is an essential cofactor for antioxidant enzymes; it provides protection also for the mitochondria against endogenous oxygen radicals. The ratio of these two forms can act as a marker for oxidative stress. The majority of the methods available for estimation of both the forms of glutathione are based on colorimetric and electrochemical assays. In this study, electrochemical sensors were developed for the estimation of both GSH and GSSG. Two different types of transducers were used: i) screen-printed three-electrode disposable sensor (SPE) containing carbon working electrode, carbon counter electrode and silver/silver chloride reference electrode; ii) three-electrode disposable system (CDE) consisting of three copper electrodes. 5,5,-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid) (DTNB) was used as detector element for estimation of total reduced thiol content. The enzyme glutathione reductase along with a co-enzyme reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate was used to estimate GSSG. By combining the two methods GSH can also be estimated. The detector elements were immobilized on the working electrodes of the sensors by bulk polymerization of acrylamide. The responses were observed amperometrically. The detection limit for thiol (GSH) was less than 0.6,ppm when DTNB was used, whereas for GSSG it was less than 0.1,ppm. [source] Land Cover Characteristics in Ne Iceland with Special Reference to Jökulhlaup GeomorphologyGEOGRAFISKA ANNALER SERIES A: PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY, Issue 3-4 2003Petteri Alho ABSTRACT Subglacial eruptions in Vatnajbkull have accounted for several jökulhlaups (glacial outburst floods) in the Northern Volcanic Zone (NVZ). These events and aeolian processes have had a considerable impact on the landscape evolution of the area. Most of this area is occupied by barren land cover; the northern margin of the barren land cover is advancing northwards, burying vegetation under wind-blown sediment. This paper presents a land-cover classification based on a supervised Landsat TM image classification with pre-processing and extensive field observations. Four land cover categories were identified: (a) lava cover (34.8%); (b) barren sediment cover (39.0%); (c) vegetation (25.1%); and (d) water and snow (1.1%). The mapping of sand transport routes demonstrates that a major aeolian sand transportation pathway is situated in the western part of the study area. The sedimentary formation elongated towards the northeast is evidence of active and continuous aeolian sand transportation towards the north. Interpretation of the satellite image suggests that four main areas are affected by jökulhlaups along the Jökulsáá Fjöllum: Ásbyrgi, Grímsstaðir, Herðubreið,Möðrudalur, and the Dyngjujökull sandur. In addition, jökulhlaup-related sediment cover (8%) in the study area, together with erosional features, are evidence of a severe and extensive jökulhlaup-induced process of land degradation. Qi RFamide-related peptide-3 (RFRP-3) is a neuropeptide produced in cells of the paraventricular nucleus and dorsomedial nucleus of the ovine hypothalamus. In the present study, we show that these cells project to cells in regions of the hypothalamus involved in energy balance and reproduction. A retrograde tracer (FluoroGold) was injected into either the arcuate nucleus, the lateral hypothalamic area or the ventromedial nucleus. The distribution and number of retrogradely-labelled RFRP-3 neurones was determined. RFRP-3 neurones projected to the lateral hypothalamic area and, to a lesser degree, to the ventromedial nucleus and the arcuate nucleus. Double-label immunohistochemistry was employed to identify cells receiving putative RFRP-3 input to cells in these target regions. RFRP-3 cells were seen to project to neuropeptide Y and pro-opiomelanocortin neurones in the arcuate nucleus, orexin and melanin-concentrating hormone neurones in the lateral hypothalamic area, as well as orexin cells in the dorsomedial nucleus and corticotrophin-releasing hormone and oxytocin cells in the paraventricular nucleus. Neurones expressing gonadotrophin-releasing hormone in the preoptic area were also seen to receive input from RFRP-3 projections. We conclude that RFRP-3 neurones project to hypothalamic regions and cells involved in regulation of energy balance and reproduction in the ovine brain. Corley Critical illness, anesthesia, primary cardiovascular disease, and exercise may result in marked hemodynamic alterations. Measuring cardiac output (CO) is central to defining these alterations for both clinician and researcher. In the past 10 years, several new methods of measuring CO have been developed for the human medical market. Some of these methods are now validated in the horse and are in clinical use. The Fick method has been used in equine research for more than a century. It depends on simultaneous measurement of mixed venous (pulmonary arterial) and peripheral arterial oxygen content and oxygen uptake by the lungs. The technique is technically demanding, which restricts its clinical use. Indicator dilution techniques, with indocyanine green, cold (thermodilution), or lithium as the marker, have also been widely used in the horse. The indocyanine technique is cumbersome, and thermodilution requires right heart catheterization, which is not a benign procedure, making both of these methods less than ideal for clinical use. Lithium dilution requires catheterization of a peripheral artery and a jugular vein. It has recently been validated in anesthetized adult horses and neonatal foals. Doppler echocardiography is a noninvasive ultrasound-based technique. More accurate measurements are obtained with transesophageal than with transthoracic measurements; however, both methods require considerable technical expertise. Bioimpedance and pulse contour analysis are 2 new methods that have yet to be validated in the horse. With the currently available technology, lithium dilution appears to be the method of measuring CO best suited to the equine clinic. [source] Evaluating Patients with Acute Ischemic Stroke with Special Reference to Newly Developed Atrial Fibrillation in Cerebral EmbolismPACING AND CLINICAL ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY, Issue 9 2007MINORU TAGAWA M.D. Background:Cardioembolic strokes are extensive and have a poor prognosis. To identify the cardiovascular risk factors of cardioembolic stroke, we evaluated the cardiovascular status with special reference to persistent atrial fibrillation (AF) and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) combined with the type of acute ischemic stroke. Methods:We divided 315 consecutive patients admitted to our Department of Neurosurgery with an acute ischemic stroke into four types of brain infarction using clinical history, onset pattern of stroke, and brain imaging: cardioembolic (group E, n = 105), lacunar (group L, n = 92), atherothrombotic (group T, n = 111), and unclassified (n = 7). All patients underwent standard electrocardiography (ECG), a 24-hour ECG recording (Holter ECG) and transthoracic echocardiography (UCG). Results:Persistent AF or PAF was detected in 97 patients (31.5%) using Holter ECG: more frequently in group E (67.6%) than in groups L (15.2%) or T (9.2%). Persistent AF or PAF was first diagnosed on admission using a standard ECG in 16 patients (5.2%) with no previous history and 14 of these patients belonged to group E (13.3%). PAF was newly detected on Holter ECG in another 26 patients (8.4%) and 13 of these patients (12.4%) belonged to group E. Concerning UCG, left atrial enlargement and mitral regurgitation were more frequent in group E than in group L or T. Conclusion:Holter ECG in addition to ECG on admission is important for detecting persistent AF or PAF in patients with ischemic stroke, especially with cardioembolism as diagnosed by neuroimaging. [source] Osteological Examinations on the Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus Shaw 1805) with Special Reference to Skeletal Alterations Conditioned by BreedingANATOMIA, HISTOLOGIA, EMBRYOLOGIA, Issue 4 2009T. Bartels Summary The aims of this study were to examine the skeleton of domesticated budgerigars of phenotypically different breeding types, to describe the expression of skeletal changes and to discuss the results with special reference to the causes and effects of breed-conditioned alterations. Complete skeletons of 39 adult budgerigars of both sexes were the object of our research. The examinations demonstrated that almost all metrically sized skeleton dimensions of budgerigars of the exhibition type were increased significantly, compared with those of the non-exhibition type. Only for the scapula significant length differences between the budgerigars of both breeding types could not be verified. It can be stated that the measuring parameters ,occipital width', ,maxilla length', ,skull length' and ,prefrontal width' are suitable for the characterization of exhibition budgerigars. However, sexual dimorphisms could be verified in only three parameters (width of the pars symphysialis mandibulae, height of the skull, width of the skull within the range of the occiput). It has to be clarified in future studies to what extent the changes in the skeleton of budgerigars of the exhibition type have already had consequences for their flying ability, metabolism, health and well-being. [source] Neurotrophin Receptor-like Proteins in the Bovine (Bos taurus) Lymphoid Organs, with Special Reference to Thymus and SpleenANATOMIA, HISTOLOGIA, EMBRYOLOGIA, Issue 4 2001M. B. Levanti Increasing evidence suggests that neurotrophins could regulate immune functions acting directly or indirectly on immunocompetent cells. The indirect pathway involves stromal cells of the primary and secondary lymphoid organs. In the present study the occurrence of Trk proteins (TrkA, TrkB and TrkC), regarded as the high-affinity signal-transducing receptors for neurotrophins, was investigated in cow lymphoid organs using immunohistochemistry. The thymus and spleen of both fetal and adult animals, and the palatine tonsils, lymph nodes and Peyer's patches of adult animals, were analysed. Unidentified cells displaying TrkA-like immunoreactivity were found in the fetal thymus, whereas those expressing this protein in the adult gland were identified as epithelial cells. In the spleen, immunoreactive TrkA was observed in cells of the white pulp. TrkB immunoreactivity in both fetal and adult thymus and spleen was localized in monocyte/macrophage cells. As a rule, TrkC was absent from the thymus and the spleen independent of the animal's age. Different types of stromal cells, but never the lymphocytes themselves, displayed TrkA, TrkB, or TrkC immunoreactivity in the other lymphoid organs analysed. As in other vertebrate species, Trk proteins in the lymphoid organs of the cow were localized in the stromal, non-lymphoid cells, thus suggesting that neurotrophins might regulate the immune function acting indirectly on lymphocytes. [source] Allelotype Analysis of Common Epithelial Ovarian Cancers with Special Reference to Comparison between Clear Cell Adenocarcinoma with Other Histological TypesCANCER SCIENCE, Issue 7 2002Satoshi Okada Determination of the histological type of epithelial ovarian cancer is clinically important to predict patient prognosis. To estimate accurately the chromosomal regions that frequently show loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in each histological type, LOH at 55 loci on 38 chromosomal arms was examined by means of laser capture microdissection and PCR-LOH analysis in 45 epithelial ovarian cancers composed of clear cell adenocarcinoma (CCA), serous adenocarcinoma (SEA), endometrioid adenocarcinoma (EMA) and mucinous adenocarcinoma (MUA). In addition, p53 (exons 5,8) gene mutations and the nuclear immunoreactivity of p53 proteins in these tumors were examined by PCR-SSCP and immunohistochemistry. In CCA, LOH was detected primarily on 1p (69%) followed by 19p (45%) and 11q (43%). On the other hand, in SEA, LOH was detected in at least 50% of cases on 1p, 4p, 5q, 6p, 8p, 9q, 12q, 13q, 15q, 16p, 17p, 17q, 18p, 18q, 19p, 20p and Xp. The incidences of LOH on 5q, 12q, 13q and 17p were significantly lower in CCA than in SEA (P=0.019, 0.031, 0.0035 and 0.012). EMA showed a tendency for frequent LOH on 7p, whereas MUA showed significantly high occurrence of LOH at 17p13.1. The incidences of p53 mutation and p53 nuclear immunoreactivity also differed between CCA and SEA: 0% and 7% in the former and 64% and 45% in the latter (P=0.0006 and 0.039). These findings clarify that there are differences in LOH distribution patterns among different histological subtypes of epithelial ovarian cancer. In CCA, p53 tumor-suppressor gene (TSG) is not involved in carcinogenesis and tumor-suppressor genes located on 1p are considered to play an important role in tumor development. Here, I expand the term "social" to 42 characters and present a tree based only on behavioral characters. Simple experiments and protocols for measuring the transfer rates between the carbon-13 Zeeman order and the three-spin order, and for their analogues in the transverse plane, are discussed using a concentrated solution of the disaccharide trehalose as a model system. Experimental data sets consisting of conventional carbon-13 relaxation parameters (T1, T2, and NOE), along with the cross-correlated relaxation rates, are also presented for some small, rigid, polycyclic molecules. These data are interpreted using spectral density functions appropriate to spherical or symmetric tops reorienting according to small-step rotational diffusion model. Danneskiold-Samsøe Abstract Aim:, Muscle strength is an excellent indicator of general health when based on reliable measurements. Muscle strength data for a healthy population are rare or non-existent. The aim of the present study was to measure a set of normal values for isometric and isokinetic muscle strength for all the major joint movements of the body and, from these data, to create a basis for comparison of the muscle strength of an individual with the expected value in a normal population. Methods:, A randomly selected group, aged 20,80 years, from the Copenhagen City Heart Study were studied. The group was subgrouped according to age and gender. Isometric and isokinetic muscle strength was measured in each subject across the main joints in the body. A statistical model was developed that encompassed the three main muscle groups: upper limbs, trunk and lower limbs. Results:, Muscle strength in healthy men decreases in a linear fashion from the age of 25 years down to between 54% and 89% at the age of 75 years, and seems not highly dependent on any other parameter than age. For women, the muscle strength is dependent on weight and is only related to age from around 40 years of age. The decrease in muscle strength from the age around 40 to 75 years is 48,92%. For most muscle groups, men are 1.5,2 times stronger than women, with the oldest men having strength similar to that observed among the youngest women. Conclusion:, We developed a model to compare the isometric and isokinetic muscle strength of all the major joint movements of an individual with values for a healthy man or woman at any age in the range of 20,80 years. In all age groups, women have lower muscle strength than men. Men's muscle strength declines with age, while women's muscle strength declines from the age of 41 years. [source] Pigment cell distributions in different tissues of the zebrafish, with special reference to the striped pigment patternDEVELOPMENTAL DYNAMICS, Issue 2 2005Masashi Hirata Abstract The orderly pigment pattern of zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a good model system for studying how spatial patterns form in animals. Recent molecular genetic studies have shown that interactions between the pigment cells play major roles in pattern formation. In the present study, we performed comparative transmission electron microscopy of pigment cells, in order to clarify the structural interactions of pigment cells in tissues with and without a striped pattern. In patterned tissues, pigment cells were distributed as a one-cell-thick sheet. The layer order of the sheets is always kept strictly. In tissues without a striped pattern, the layer order was often disturbed or the cells were distributed in a scattered, double-sheeted, or an accumulated pile. Our observations suggest that the underlying mechanism that controls the vertical order of the pigment cells is related to that controlling the stripe pattern. [source] Comparative expression analysis of transcription factor genes in the endostyle of invertebrate chordatesDEVELOPMENTAL DYNAMICS, Issue 3 2005Jin Hiruta Abstract The endostyle of invertebrate chordates is a pharyngeal organ that is thought to be homologous with the follicular thyroid of vertebrates. Although thyroid-like features such as iodine-concentrating and peroxidase activities are located in the dorsolateral part of both ascidian and amphioxus endostyles, the structural organization and numbers of functional units are different. To estimate phylogenetic relationships of each functional zone with special reference to the evolution of the thyroid, we have investigated, in ascidian and amphioxus, the expression patterns of thyroid-related transcription factors such as TTF-2/FoxE4 and Pax2/5/8, as well as the forkhead transcription factors FoxQ1 and FoxA. Comparative gene expression analyses depicted an overall similarity between ascidians and amphioxus endostyles, while differences in expression patterns of these genes might be specifically related to the addition or elimination of a pair of glandular zones. Expressions of Ci-FoxE and BbFoxE4 suggest that the ancestral FoxE class might have been recruited for the formation of thyroid-like region in a possible common ancestor of chordates. Furthermore, coexpression of FoxE4, Pax2/5/8, and TPO in the dorsolateral part of both ascidian and amphioxus endostyles suggests that genetic basis of the thyroid function was already in place before the vertebrate lineage. [source] Developments in the prediction of type 1 diabetes mellitus, with special reference to insulin autoantibodiesDIABETES/METABOLISM: RESEARCH AND REVIEWS, Issue 5 2005Bernd Franke Abstract The prodromal phase of type 1 diabetes is characterised by the appearance of multiple islet-cell related autoantibodies (Aab). The major target antigens are islet-cell antigen, glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), protein-tyrosine phosphatase-2 (IA-2) and insulin. Insulin autoantibodies (IAA), in contrast to the other autoimmune markers, are the only ,-cell specific antibodies. There is general consensus that the presence of multiple Aab (, 3) is associated with a high risk of developing diabetes, where the presence of a single islet-cell-related Aab has usually a low predictive value. The most commonly used assay format for the detection of Aab to GAD, IA-2 and insulin is the fluid-phase radiobinding assay. The RBA does not identify or measure Aab, but merely detects its presence. However, on the basis of molecular studies, disease-specific constructs of GAD and IA-2 have been employed leading to somewhat improved sensitivity and specificity of the RBA. Serological studies have shown epitope restriction of IAA that can differentiate diabetes-related from unrelated IAA, but current assays do not distinguish between disease-predictive and non-predictive IAA or between IAA and insulin antibodies (IA). More recently, phage display technology has been successful in identifying disease-specific anti-idiotopes of insulin. In addition, phage display has facilitated the in vitro production of antibodies with high affinity. Identification of disease-specific anti-idiotopes of insulin should enable the production of a high affinity reagent against the same anti-idiotope. Such a development would form the basis of a disease-specific radioimmunoassay able to identify and measure particular idiotypes, rather than merely detect and titrate IAA. Yajima SUMMARY., Self-expandable metallic stents (EMS) provide a common option for malignant esophageal stenosis because of the low complication rate and high dysphagia improvement rate. However, there are few studies on the functional duration of EMS and the extent of improvement of the quality of life. We retrospectively analyzed 18 patients who received EMSs in our division from 1996 to 2002. The median duration of possible food intake and the median survival period were 94.5 and 108 days. The median duration of domiciliary treatment was 56 days. Six of the 18 patients were not discharged from hospital after EMS insertion. The Karnofsky index was found to be a significant determinant of the feasibility of domiciliary treatment. One-third of the patients are incapable of obtaining the benefits of the palliative therapy. EMS deployment should be prudently selected for patients exhibiting low performance status. Nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios and uric acid concentrations in fungus-growing termites (Isoptera: Termitidae: Macrotermitinae), sampled in Cameroon and Thailand, were determined in order to compare castes that are known to differ in behaviour and feeding habits. 2. Nitrogen isotope ratios (,15N) were either not significantly changed or lower in workers compared with the diet (the fungus combs), whereas carbon isotope ratios (,13C) were higher in worker termites than in the fungus combs. 3. In old workers, ,15N values were unexpectedly low and correlated negatively with whole-body uric acid concentrations. This indicates that older workers retain uric acid, which has a low ,15N value, to conserve nitrogen within the colony and, furthermore, that older colony members may ultimately be consumed by younger conspecifics. It focuses in on the dollar/euro exchange rate, and the differential results arising from using alternative measures of the output gap for the US and for the Euro area. A comparison of ,in-sample' prediction against alternative models of exchange rates is also conducted. Recent work on carbon nanotubes, used as catalyst supports in heterogeneous catalysis and sensor development is also presented. An overview of recent progress in the area of fullerene electrochemistry is included. Several cases of electrocatalytic dehalogenation of alkyl halides, assisted by the electrode charge transfer to fullerenes, are discussed. Research work on the electrocatalysis of biomolecules, such as hemin, cytochrome c, DNA, coenzymes, glucose, ascorbic acid, dopamine, etc. have also been considered. Based on the studies of the interaction of fullerenes, fullerene derivatives, and carbon nanotubes with other molecules and biomolecules in particular, the possibilities for the preparation of electrochemical sensors and their application in electroanalytical chemistry are highlighted. [source] Comparison of the life history strategies of three Dysdercus true bugs (Heteroptera: Pyrrhocoridae), with special reference to their seasonal host plant useENTOMOLOGICAL SCIENCE, Issue 4 2005Katsuyuki KOHNO Abstract The life history strategy and seasonal host plant use of three Dysdercus bugs (D. cingulatus, D. poecilus and D. decussatus) were compared based on 2 years of twice monthly observations on Ishigaki-jima Island (24°N, 124°E) in the southernmost part of Japan. Dysdercus poecilus reproduced almost year round, exclusively on Sida rhombifolia, which bears fruit and/or seeds almost year round. Dysdercus cingulatus reproduced successively on various malvaceous and bombacaceous plant species, according to their seasonal fruiting cycles. Its robust reproduction was observed on Hibiscus makinoi during winter months and on Chorisia speciosa and Bombax ceiba in early summer, whereas small-scale reproduction was observed on various malvaceous plant species during the summer and autumn months. Dysdercus decussatus reproduced on Hibiscus tiliaceus and Thespesia populnea during the summer months, when these host plants bear abundant fruit and/or seeds, and its adults formed conspicuous aggregations without copulation on the underside of the leaves of those plants from November to the subsequent May. Each Dysdercus species showed a species-specific life history strategy according to the differences in the phenology of their host plants. [source] Seasonal population changes of five parasitoids attacking the scale insect Nipponaclerda biwakoensis on the common reed, with special reference to predation by wintering birdsENTOMOLOGICAL SCIENCE, Issue 4 2005Shuji KANEKO Abstract Seasonal changes in the abundance of five species of hymenopterous parasitoids (four species of Encyrtidae and one species of Eulophidae) attacking the scale insect Nipponaclerda biwakoensis on the common reed were investigated for 2 years in Lake Biwa, with special reference to predation by the reed bunting, Emberiza schoeniclus, during winter. The scales settled on reed shoot stems under sheath leaves, passing through three discrete generations per year. The abundance of adult female scales increased exponentially from July (first generation) to December (third generation). Adult female scales of the third generation overwintered on reed shoots. During winter, female scale abundance dramatically declined, whereas the number of predation marks made by reed buntings using their bills on reed sheath leaves increased. The generations of all five parasitoids were synchronized with the host scale generations, and the five parasitoids overwintered as larvae inside the scale bodies. The abundance of parasitized scales and parasitoid adults emerging from the scales also increased from July to December, but greatly decreased during winter. The overall parasitism rate of the female scales remained at relatively low levels (less than 40%) throughout the year, including before and after winter. A bird exclusion experiment revealed that the dramatic winter decrease of the abundance of the scale and its five parasitoids was due to intensive and non-selective predation by the buntings on unparasitized and parasitized scales. Additionally, the proportion of immature parasitoids removed by birds varied between the five parasitoid species. Thus, seasonal population changes of the five scale parasitoids are considerably affected by bird predation on overwintering immature parasitoids. [source] Bentazon triggers the promotion of oxidative damage in the Portuguese ricefield cyanobacterium Anabaena cylindrica: Response of the antioxidant systemENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY, Issue 5 2010Victor Galhano Abstract Rice fields are frequently exposed to environmental contamination by herbicides and cyanobacteria, as primary producers of these aquatic ecosystems, are adversely affected. Anabaena cylindrica is a cyanobacterium with a significantly widespread occurrence in Portuguese rice fields. This strain was studied throughout 72 h in laboratory conditions for its stress responses to sublethal concentrations (0.75,2 mM) of bentazon, a selective postemergence herbicide recommended for integrated weed management in rice, with special reference to oxidative stress, role of proline and intracellular antioxidant enzymes in herbicide-induced free radicals detoxification. Activities of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and glutathione S -transferase (GST) increased in a time- and herbicide dose-response manner and were higher than those in the control samples after 72 h. A time- and concentration-dependent increase of malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and the enhanced cell membrane leakage following bentazon exposure are indicative of lipid peroxidation, free radicals formation, and oxidative damage, while increased amounts of SOD, CAT, APX, GST, and proline indicated their involvement in free radical scavenging mechanisms. The appreciable decline in the reduced glutathione (GSH) pool after 72 h at higher bentazon concentrations could be explained by the reduction of the NADPH-dependent glutathione reductase (GR) activity. The obtained results suggested that the alterations of antioxidant systems in A. cylindrica might be useful biomarkers of bentazon exposure. As the toxic mechanism of bentazon is a complex phenomenon, this study also adds relevant findings to explain the oxidative stress pathways of bentazon promoting oxidative stress in cyanobacteria. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Methods:, Systematic review of the literature and of epidemiologic studies. Results:, An acute symptomatic seizure is defined as a clinical seizure occurring at the time of a systemic insult or in close temporal association with a documented brain insult. Suggestions are made to define acute symptomatic seizures as those events occurring within 1 week of stroke, traumatic brain injury, anoxic encephalopathy, or intracranial surgery; at first identification of subdural hematoma; at the presence of an active central nervous system (CNS) infection; or during an active phase of multiple sclerosis or other autoimmune diseases. In addition, a diagnosis of acute symptomatic seizure should be made in the presence of severe metabolic derangements (documented within 24 h by specific biochemical or hematologic abnormalities), drug or alcohol intoxication and withdrawal, or exposure to well-defined epileptogenic drugs. Discussion:, Acute symptomatic seizures must be distinguished from unprovoked seizures and separately categorized for epidemiologic purposes. These recommendations are based upon the best available data at the time of this report. Systematic studies should be undertaken to better define the associations in question, with special reference to metabolic and toxic insults, for which the time window for the occurrence of an acute symptomatic seizure and the absolute values for toxic and metabolic dysfunction still require a clear identification. The simplicity, ease of measurement and the putative links to the etiology of the disease in the study of an endophenotype has the potential promise of unraveling the genetic basis of the disease in question. Of the various proposed endophenotypes, the P300 component of the event-related potential has been used in studies on alcoholism, schizophrenia and externalizing disorders. The current state of knowledge regarding the concept of endophenotypes, P300 and the validity of P300 as an endophenotype with special reference to substance use disorders is discussed in this review. Since the voltage sag during the fault is proportional to the short-circuit current, an effective fault-current limitation by means of a device connected at the beginning of the most exposed radial feeders will limit the expected voltage sag amplitude and improve the system power quality. Hassan Pollen morphology of seven species of genus Salvia (Lamiaceae) was investigated using light and scanning electron microscopy. Pollen was studied to show all possible characteristic features like shape, size, apertures, wall stratification, etc., with special reference to the specific characters of each pollen type. Four pollen types were recognized viz. Salvia aegyptiaca pollen type, Salvia deserti pollen type, Salvia palaestina pollen type and Salvia spinosa pollen type.
