Contending with space,time interaction in the spatial prediction of pollution: Vancouver's hourly ambient PM10 field

Abstract In this article we describe an approach for predicting average hourly concentrations of ambient PM10 in Vancouver. We know our solution also applies to hourly ozone fields and believe it may be quite generally applicable. We use a hierarchical Bayesian approach. At the primary level we model the logarithmic field as a trend model plus Gaussian stochastic residual. That trend model depends on hourly meteorological predictors and is common to all sites. The stochastic component consists of a 24-hour vector response that we model as a multivariate AR(3) temporal process with common spatial parameters. Removing the trend and AR structure leaves ,whitened' time series of vector series. With this approach (as opposed to using 24 separate univariate time series models), there is little loss of spatial correlation in these residuals compared with that in just the detrended residuals (prior to removing the AR component). Moreover our multivariate approach enables predictions for any given hour to ,borrow strength' through its correlation with adjoining hours. On this basis we develop a spatial predictive distribution for these residuals at unmonitored sites. By transforming the predicted residuals back to the original data scales we can impute Vancouver's hourly PM10 field. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]


Comparison of biomechanical gait parameters of young children with haemophilia and those of age-matched peers

Summary., Quality of life for children with haemophilia has improved since the introduction of prophylaxis. The frequency of joint haemorrhages has reduced, but the consequences of reduced bleeding on the biomechanical parameters of walking are not well understood. This study explored the differences in sagittal plane biomechanics of walking between a control group (Group 1) of normal age-matched children and children with haemophilia (Group 2) with a target ankle joint. A motion capture system and two force platforms were used to collect sagittal plane kinematic, kinetic and temporal,spatial data during walking of 14 age-matched normal children and 14 children with haemophilia aged 7,13 years. Group differences in maximum and minimum flexion/extension angles and moments of the hip, knee and ankle joints, ground reaction forces and temporal,spatial gait cycle parameters were analysed using one-way anova. Significant changes (P < 0.05) in kinematic and kinetic parameters but not temporal,spatial parameters were found in children with haemophilia; greater flexion angles and external moments of force at the knee, greater ankle plantarflexion external moments and lower hip flexion external moments. These results suggest that early biomechanical changes are present in young haemophilic children with a history of a target ankle joint and imply that lower limb joint function is more impaired than current clinical evaluations indicate. Protocols and quantitative data on the biomechanical gait pattern of children with haemophilia reported in this study provide a baseline to evaluate lower limb joint function and clinical progression. Spatial firing properties of lateral septal neurons

Abstract The present study describes the spatial firing properties of neurons in the lateral septum (LS). LS neuronal activity was recorded in rats as they performed a spatial navigation task in an open field. In this task, the rat acquired an intracranial self-stimulation reward when it entered a certain place, a location that varied randomly from trial to trial. Of 193 neurons recorded in the LS, 81 showed place-related activity. The majority of the tested neurons changed place-related activity when spatial relations between environmental cues were altered by rotating intrafield (proximal) cues. The comparison of place activities between LS place-related neurons recorded in the present study and hippocampal place cells recorded in our previous study, using identical behavioral and recording procedures, revealed that spatial parameters (spatial information content, coherence, and cluster size) were smaller in the LS than in the hippocampus. Of the 193 LS neurons, 86 were influenced by intracranial self-stimulation rewards; 31 of these 86 were also place-related. These results, together with previous anatomical and behavioral observations, suggest that the spatial information sent from the hippocampus to the LS is modulated by and interacts with signals related to reward in the LS. © 2006 Wiley-Liss, Inc. National-scale metacommunity dynamics of carabid beetles in UK farmland

Summary 1Understanding the wide-scale processes controlling communities across multiple sites is a foremost challenge of modern ecology. Here, data from a nation-wide network of field sites are used to describe the metacommunity dynamics of arable carabid beetles. This is done by modelling how communities are structured at a local level, by changes in the environment of the sampled fields and, at a regional level, by fitting spatial parameters describing latitudinal and longitudinal gradients. 2Local and regional processes demonstrated independent and significant capacities for structuring communities. Within the local environment, crop type was found to be the primary determinant of carabid community composition. The regional component included a strong response to a longitudinal gradient, with significant increases in diversity in an east-to-west direction. 3Carabid metacommunities seem to be structured by a combination of species sorting dynamics, operating at two different, but equally important, spatial scales. At a local scale, species are sorted along a resource gradient determined by crop type. At a wider spatial scale species appear to be sorted along a longitudinal gradient. 4Nation-wide trends in communities coincided with known gradients of increased homogeneity of habitat mosaics and agricultural intensification. However, more work is required to understand fully how communities are controlled by the interaction of crops with changes in landscape structure at different spatial scales. 5We conclude that crop type is a powerful determinant of carabid biodiversity, but that it cannot be considered in isolation from other components of the landscape for optimal conservation policy. Pes planovalgus in RA: a descriptive and analytical study of foot function determined by gait analysis

Abstract Objective: To compare gait and foot function between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with painful pes planovalgus deformity and healthy age- and sex-matched adults. Methods: Gait analysis was undertaken in 23 RA patients (14 female and 9 male, mean age 52.3 years, mean disease duration 6.6 years) and 23 healthy adults (14 female and 9 male, mean age 49.5 years). Gait measurements included temporal and spatial parameters, plantar pressures and three-dimensional (3D) kinematics at the ankle joint complex (AJC). The mean differences between the groups and associated confidence intervals were calculated using the t distribution. Results: RA patients showed longer gait cycle (mean difference 0.15 sec and 0.14 sec for right and left limbs, respectively) and double-limb support times (mean difference 8.3% and 7.9% for right and left limbs, respectively), shorter stride length (mean difference ,0.31 m for right and left limbs), slower walking speed (mean difference ,0.39 m/sec) and lower cadence (mean difference ,16.6 steps/min). In comparison with the normal group, RA patients had greater AJC dorsi/plantarflexion range of motion (ROM) (mean difference 5.7 °) and inversion/eversion ROM (mean difference 2.9 °). The frontal plane position of the AJC was more everted at specific stance periods (mean difference at heel strike ,2.4 ° and at midstance ,4.0°). Furthermore, both the peak eversion (mean difference ,4.1 °) and summated eversion motion as a function of time (mean difference ,313.9 °) were greater in the RA group. The pes planovalgus foot in RA was characterized by increases in peak pressure (mean difference 34.3 kPa), pressure,time integral (mean difference 18.2 kPa.sec), peak force (mean difference 1.7 N), force,time integral (mean difference 0.7 N.sec), contact time (mean difference 9.8% roll over process) and contact area (mean group difference 3.4 cm,2) in the medial midfoot. Further changes in the load pattern in the forefoot were observed in the RA patients, namely increases in the peak pressure (mean difference 96.4 kPa), pressure,time integral (mean difference 58.4 kPa.sec), and contact area (mean difference 1.7 cm,2) in the medial forefoot region and reduction in contact area (mean difference ,3.9 cm,2), peak force (mean difference ,7.2 N) and force,time integral (mean difference ,1.6 N.sec) in the lateral forefoot. Conclusions: Painful pes planovalgus deformity in RA is associated with global changes in gait, and localized structural and functional changes in the foot which can be accurately measured using clinical gait analysis.
