Selected AbstractsNeural Network Modeling of Constrained Spatial Interaction Flows: Design, Estimation, and Performance IssuesJOURNAL OF REGIONAL SCIENCE, Issue 1 2003Manfred M Fischer In this paper a novel modular product unit neural network architecture is presented to model singly constrained spatial interaction flows. The efficacy of the model approach is demonstrated for the origin constrained case of spatial interaction using Austrian interregional telecommunication traffic data. The model requires a global search procedure for parameter estimation, such as the Alopex procedure. A benchmark comparison against the standard origin constrained gravity model and the two,stage neural network approach, suggested by Openshaw (1998), illustrates the superiority of the proposed model in terms of the generalization performance measured by ARV and SRMSE. [source] Medical Potentialities of Biomimetic Apatites through Adsorption, Ionic Substitution, and Mineral/Organic Associations: Three Illustrative Examples,ADVANCED ENGINEERING MATERIALS, Issue 7 2010Ahmed Al-Kattan Biomimetic calcium phosphate apatites are particularly adapted to bio-medical applications due to their biocompatibility and high surface reactivity. In this contribution we report three selected examples dealing with mineral/organic interactions devoted to convey new functionalities to apatite materials, either in the form of dry bioceramics or of aqueous colloids. We first studied the adsorption of risedronate (bisphosphonate) molecules, which present potential therapeutic properties for the treatment of osteoporosis. We then addressed the preparation of luminescent Eu-doped apatites for exploring apatite/collagen interfaces through the FRET technique, in view of preparing "advanced" biocomposites exhibiting close spatial interaction between apatite crystals and collagen fibers. Finally, we showed the possibility to obtain nanometer-scaled apatite-based colloids, with particle size tailorable in the range 30,100,nm by controlling the agglomeration state of apatite nanocrystals by way of surface functionalization with a phospholipid moiety. This paper is aimed at illustrating some of the numerous potentialities of calcium phosphate apatites in the bio-medical field, allowing one to foresee perspectives lying well beyond bone-related applications. [source] A cross-sectional analysis of residential property prices: the effects of income, commuting, schooling, the housing stock and spatial interaction in the English regions,PAPERS IN REGIONAL SCIENCE, Issue 3 2006Bernard Fingleton Housing supply and markets; cross-sectional models; spatial econometric models Abstract., This article examines the distribution of residential property prices in 2001 across local areas in England using spatial econometric methods, showing that spatial variations in local income, income within commuting distance, the stock of residential properties and the quality of local schooling have significant effects. The residual spatial variation due to unknown factors is modelled by a proxy variable, but this does not rule out a significant spatial lag. The article argues that this represents endogenous interaction of property price levels between neighbouring areas, which is interpreted as the outcome of local market knowledge and preference, which produces greater price similarity between an area and its neighbours than one would anticipate from the levels of the exogenous price determinants. [source] Measuring the spillover effects: Some Chinese evidence,PAPERS IN REGIONAL SCIENCE, Issue 1 2000Long Gen Ying Chinese space economy; core-periphery analysis; local Moran; spillover effects Abstract. Based on recently developed methods of exploratory spatial data analysis, this article seeks to prove the desired spread effects in the Chinese space economy from a core-periphery perspective. Recently developed methods of exploratory spatial data analysis provide new insights on the spatial pattern of the interaction of Chinese provincial output growth rates over the 1978,1994 period. Findings indicate that the economic spillover effects are most evident at the first order of province contiguity from Guangdong, where the two coastal provinces of Hainan and Guangxi are identified with a significant spread pattern, while non-coastal provinces Hunan and Jiangxi are observed with a strong polarization pattern. A further analysis indicates that the state preferential policies favoring the coastal region are the fundamental force in determining the direction of spread-polarization processes in the Chinese space economy. This finding confirms Friedmann's hypothesis on spatial interaction, namely, that the spread process is a successful diffusion of the core's existing institutions into the periphery. [source] Nonparametric One-way Analysis of Variance of Replicated Bivariate Spatial Point PatternsBIOMETRICAL JOURNAL, Issue 1 2004Sabine Landau Abstract A common problem in neuropathological studies is to assess the spatial patterning of cells on tissue sections and to compare spatial patterning between disorder groups. For a single cell type, the cell positions constitute a univariate point process and interest focuses on the degree of spatial aggregation. For two different cell types, the cell positions constitute a bivariate point process and the degree of spatial interaction between the cell types is of interest. We discuss the problem of analysing univariate and bivariate spatial point patterns in the one-way design where cell patterns have been obtained for groups of subjects. A bootstrapping procedure to perform a nonparametric one-way analysis of variance of the spatial aggregation of a univariate point process has been suggested by Diggle, Lange and Bene, (1991). We extend their replication-based approach to allow the comparison of the spatial interaction of two cell types between groups, to include planned comparisons (contrasts) and to assess whole groups against complete spatial randomness and spatial independence. We also accommodate several replicate tissue sections per subject. An advantage of our approach is that it can be applied when processes are not stationary, a common problem in brain tissue sections since neurons are arranged in cortical layers. We illustrate our methods by applying them to a neuropathological study to investigate abnormalities in the functional relationship between neurons and astrocytes in HIV associated dementia. KGaA, Weinheim) [source] Estimating the snow water equivalent on the Gatineau catchment using hierarchical Bayesian modellingHYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES, Issue 4 2006Ousmane Seidou Abstract One of the most important parameters for spring runoff forecasting is the snow water equivalent on the watershed, often estimated by kriging using in situ measurements, and in some cases by remote sensing. It is known that kriging techniques provide little information on uncertainty, aside from the kriging variance. In this paper, two approaches using Bayesian hierarchical modelling are compared with ordinary kriging; Bayesian hierarchical modelling is a flexible and general statistical approach that uses observations and prior knowledge to make inferences on both unobserved data (snow water equivalent on the watershed where there is no measurements) and on the parameters (influence of the covariables, spatial interactions between the values of the process at various sites). The first approach models snow water equivalent as a Gaussian spatial process, for which the mean varies in space, and the other uses the theory of Markov random fields. Although kriging and the Bayesian models give similar point estimates, the latter provide more information on the distribution of the snow water equivalent. [source] Female dominance in captive gray mouse lemurs (Microcebus murinus)AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PRIMATOLOGY, Issue 4 2001Ute Radespiel Abstract Female dominance or female feeding priority seem to be characteristic for many lemur species, but are rare traits in other primates and mammals in general. The nocturnal lemur species, however, are underrepresented in the quantitative studies on social dominance. The aim of this study is to investigate the pattern of intersexual dominance relationships in the gray mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus), a species that is generally thought to possess a number of ancestral lemur traits. The context, distribution, and outcome of intersexual conflicts are analyzed in four captive groups of gray mouse lemurs. Intersexual conflicts occurred in the study groups in different behavioral contexts and were mostly spatial interactions (chasing/fleeing, approach/avoidance). The majority of conflicts were decided, and were in all but one case won by females. This is the first evidence suggesting unconditional female dominance in a cheirogaleid primate. The existence of female dominance in most families of the Lemuriformes suggests it is an ancient trait that evolved in their common ancestor. Am. J. [source] Causes of spatial patterns of fruit set in waratah: Temporal vs. spatial interactions between flowers on an inflorescenceAUSTRAL ECOLOGY, Issue 1 2009ROBERT J. WHELAN Abstract Spatial patterns of fruit set within inflorescences may be controlled by pollination, nutrient allocation, or inflorescence architecture. Generally, flowers that have spatial and/or temporal precedence are more likely to set fruits. We sought to separate these factors by comparing patterns of fruit set on inflorescences of two species of Telopea (Proteaceae); one that flowers from the tip to the base of the rachis, the other from base to tip. In both species, most fruits were set at the top of the inflorescence (the last flowers to open for T. speciosissima) and this was extreme for T. mongaensis, where the top flowers open first. Fruit set was not generally limited by inadequate pollination for either T. mongaensis or T. speciosissima, as hand pollinations did not increase fruit set and many abscised flowers contained pollen tubes. In T. speciosissima, we tested whether removal of developing topmost fruits would ,release' those that had initiated but not yet aborted lower down. There was no significant effect. Plant hormones can increase the degree to which a developing fruit is a sink for nutrients, so we applied cytokinin to the developing lower fruits on some inflorescences. There was no significant effect of the hormone treatment. We conclude that temporal precedence may contribute to the skewed pattern of fruit set in T. mongaensis, because there was an extreme concentration of fruit set on the distal part of the inflorescences, but it cannot explain this pattern of fruit set in T. speciosissima, where the distal flowers are the last to open. Some other process must therefore constrain fruit set to the topmost flowers in an inflorescence. While cytokinin application had no significant effect, the power of this experiment was low and we consider that the hypothesis of hormonal control is worth further exploration. [source] |
