Selected AbstractsLife history and population size variability in a relict plant.DIVERSITY AND DISTRIBUTIONS, Issue 1 2008Different routes towards long-term persistence ABSTRACT A central tenet of conservation biology is that population size affects the persistence of populations. However, many narrow endemic species combine small population ranges and sizes with long persistence, thereby challenging this tenet. I examined the performance of three different-sized populations of Petrocoptis pseudoviscosa (Caryophyllaceae), a palaeoendemic rupicolous herb distributed along a small valley in the Spanish Pyrenees. Reproductive and demographic parameters were recorded over 6 years, and deterministic and stochastic matrix models were constructed to explore population dynamics and extinction risk. Populations differed greatly in structure, fecundity, recruitment, survival rate, and life span. Strong differentiation in life-history parameters and their temporal variability resulted in differential population vulnerability under current conditions and simulated global changes such as habitat fragmentation or higher climatic fluctuations. This study provides insights into the capacity of narrow endemics to survive both at extreme environmental conditions and at small population sizes. When dealing with species conservation, the population size,extinction risk relationship may be too simplistic for ancient, ecologically restricted organisms, and some knowledge of life history may be most important to assess their future. [source] Edaphic and physiographic factors affecting the distribution of natural gamma-emitting radionuclides in the soils of the Arnás catchment in the Central Spanish PyreneesEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 4 2002A. Navas Summary Gamma-emitting radionuclides are a natural source of radiation that can be a concern for human health, therefore it is important to know the radionuclide backgrounds in soils and to assess their mobility and transfer in ecosystems. Concentrations of natural radionuclides were determined in soils from a small catchment in the middle mountain environment of the Central Spanish Pyrenees. Radioisotope activities were well within the natural ranges for soil, averaging 27, 26, 32 and 500 Bq kg,1 for 238U, 226Ra, 208Tl and 40K, respectively. Their distributions in the soil profile were analysed along three transects of contrasting physiography and soil type. Uranium was depleted in upper layers of the soil and slightly enriched in deeper sections, while 226Ra, 40K and 208Tl were more uniformly distributed. Radionuclide activities in the Calcaric Regosols on the shrub slope were less than those in the deeper and better developed Haplic Kastanozems under forest and in Calcaric Fluvisols in the valley bottom. These spatial patterns seem to be affected by the soil type; other landscape features, such as slope orientation and vegetation cover, appeared to have an indirect effect. The results indicate that the depth distribution of the radionuclides is affected by some soil properties, including pH, carbonates, organic matter and particle size, and soil processes, such as leaching and adsorption. [source] Epidemiology of Heterobasidion abietinum and Viscum album on silver fir (Abies alba) stands of the PyreneesFOREST PATHOLOGY, Issue 1 2010J. Oliva Summary In the last two decades, stand decline and increased mortality has affected silver fir (Abies alba) forests in the Spanish Pyrenees. Simultaneously severe occurrences of the root rot fungus Heterobasidion annosum s.l. and of the mistletoe Viscum album have been reported. We aimed to improve the understanding of the epidemiology of both pathogens in our region. All H. annosum isolates found on silver fir were typed as H. abietinum. H. abietinum was more frequently observed where cuttings had targeted fir trees rather than other species. H. abietinum fruiting bodies were observed in the most recently cut stumps. V. album was more abundant on more dominant fir trees, and in southern aspect stands. The number of V. album colonies in the stand correlated (R2 = 0.40) with silver fir mortality. Stands with a high level of V. album infection tended to have a smaller percentage of basal area in species other than silver fir, and they tended to be located on more south-facing slopes. H. abietinum was widespread in silver fir forests of the Pyrenees. Our data suggest that, in the Pyrenees, the observed H. abietinum incidence may represent a combination of both primary and secondary spread of the pathogen. Favouring mixed forests should be tested as a potential control method for V. album. The correlation between silver fir mortality and V. album infection warrants further study, as the observed tree mortality could have occurred due to other factors than V. album, such as drought damage. [source] Evaluation of spatial variability in snow water equivalent for a high mountain catchmentHYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES, Issue 3 2004S. P. Anderton Abstract Multivariate statistical analysis was used to explore relationships between catchment topography and spatial variability in snow accumulation and melt processes in a small headwater catchment in the Spanish Pyrenees. Manual surveys of snow depth and density provided information on the spatial distribution of snow water equivalent (SWE) and its depletion over the course of the 1997 and 1998 melt seasons. A number of indices expressing the topographic control on snow processes were extracted from a detailed digital elevation model of the catchment. Bivariate screening was used to assess the relative importance of these topographic indices in controlling snow accumulation at the start of the melt season, average melt rates and the timing of snow disappearance. This suggested that topographic controls on the redistribution of snow by wind are the most important influence on snow distribution at the start of the melt season. Furthermore, it appeared that spatial patterns of snow disappearance were largely determined by the distribution of snow water equivalent (SWE) at the start of the melt season, rather than by spatial variability in melt rates during the melt season. Binary regression tree models relating snow depth and disappearance date to terrain indices were then constructed. These explained 70,80% of the variance in the observed data. As well as providing insights into the influence of topography on snow processes, it is suggested that the techniques presented herein could be used in the parameterization of distributed snowmelt models, or in the design of efficient stratified snow surveys. [source] Microsatellite variation in autochthonous and introduced populations of the Alpine marmot (Marmota marmota) along a European west,east transectJOURNAL OF ZOOLOGICAL SYSTEMATICS AND EVOLUTIONARY RESEARCH, Issue 1 2004L. Kruckenhauser Abstract Microsatellite variation was studied in 11 populations of the Alpine marmot along a west,east transect through the present distribution range. The samples represent five autochthonous and six introduced populations. Eleven loci were analysed in nine populations and six loci in the two populations from France. In the populations from the Western Alps, there is no indication for reduced variability as has been assumed in previous studies. However, a decrease of variation in the autochthonous populations was observed from the west to the east. The introduced populations showed a heterogeneous pattern reflecting the geographic origin of the released individuals. The population from the Spanish Pyrenees harbours a high level of variation and is genetically closest to the French populations. In Austria, three of the introduced populations have low variation and are closely related to the autochthonous populations from the western part of Austria. In contrast, two introduced populations from the central part of Austria are highly variable and resemble the populations from France. At least for one of these populations an early introduction of founder individuals from the Western Alps has been documented. Zusammenfassung Die Mikrosatellitenvariation wurde in 11 Populationen des Alpenmurmeltieres entlang eines west-ost Gradienten durch das gegenwärtige Verbreitungsgebiet untersucht. Die Stichproben repräsentieren fünf autochthone und sechs eingebürgerte Populationen. Elf Loci wurden in neun Populationen analysiert und sechs Loci in den beiden Populationen aus Frankreich. In den Populationen aus den Westalpen ergab sich im Gegensatz zu früheren Untersuchungen kein Hinweis auf eine Reduktion der Variabilität. Innerhalb der autochthonen Populationen ist jedoch eine Abnahme der Variation von Westen nach Osten festzustellen. Die eingebürgerten Populationen zeigten ein uneinheitliches Muster, welches den geografischen Ursprung der ausgesetzten Individuen widerspiegelt. Die Population aus den spanischen Pyrenäen besitzt eine hohe Variation und ist genetisch den französischen Populationen am ähnlichsten. In Österreich zeigen drei der eingebürgerten Populationen niedrige Variation und sind den autochthonen Populationen aus Westösterreich am nächsten verwandt. Hingegen sind die beiden eingebürgerten Populationen aus Zentralösterreich hoch variabel und den Populationen aus Frankreich ähnlich. Zumindest für eine dieser beiden Populationen ist eine frühe Einbürgerung von Gründerindividuen aus den Westalpen dokumentiert. [source] In search of the Pre- and Post-Neolithic Genetic Substrates in Iberia: Evidence from Y-Chromosome in Pyrenean PopulationsANNALS OF HUMAN GENETICS, Issue 1 2009A. M. López-Parra Summary The male-mediated genetic legacy of the Pyrenean population was assessed through the analysis of 12 Y-STR and 27 Y-SNP loci in a sample of 169 males from 5 main geographical areas in the Spanish Pyrenees: Cinco Villas (Western Pyrenees), Jacetania and Valle de Arán (Central Pyrenees) and Alto Urgel and Cerdaña (Eastern Pyrenees). In the Iberian context, the Pyrenean samples present some specificities, being characterizeded by a high proportion of chromosomes R1b1b2-M269 (including the usually uncommon R1b1b2d-SRY2627 and R1b1b2c-M153 types) or I2a2-M26 and low proportions of other haplogroups. Our results indicate that an old pre-Neolithic substrate is preponderant in populations of the whole Pyrenean fringe. However, AMOVA revealed a high level of substructure within Pyrenean populations, partially explained by drift effects as well as by the signature of an ancient genetic differentiation between Western and Eastern Pyrenees. [source] Provenance of siliciclastic and hybrid turbiditic arenites of the Eocene Hecho Group, Spanish Pyrenees: implications for the tectonic evolution of a foreland basinBASIN RESEARCH, Issue 2 2010M. A. Caja ABSTRACT The Eocene Hecho Group turbidite system of the Aínsa-Jaca foreland Basin (southcentral Pyrenees) provides an excellent opportunity to constrain compositional variations within the context of spatial and temporal distribution of source rocks during tectonostratigraphic evolution of foreland basins. The complex tectonic setting necessitated the use of petrographic, geochemical and multivariate statistical techniques to achieve this goal. The turbidite deposits comprise four unconformity-bounded tectonostratigraphic units (TSU), consisting of quartz-rich and feldspar-poor sandstones, calclithites rich in extrabasinal carbonates and hybrid arenites dominated by intrabasinal carbonates. The sandstones occur exclusively in TSU-2, whereas calclithites and hybrid arenites occur in the overlying TSU-3, TSU-4 and TSU-5. The calclithites were deposited at the base of each TSU and hybrid arenites in the uppermost parts. Extrabasinal carbonate sources were derived from the fold-and-thrust belt (mainly Cretaceous and Palaeocene limestones). Conversely, intrabasinal carbonate grains were sourced from foramol shelf carbonate factories. This compositional trend is attributed to alternating episodes of uplift and thrust propagation (siliciclastic and extrabasinal carbonates supplies) and subsequent episodes of development of carbonate platforms supplying intrabasinal detrital grains. The quartz-rich and feldspar-poor composition of the sandstones suggests derivation from intensely weathered cratonic basement rocks during the initial fill of the foreland basin. Successive sediments (calclithites and hybrid arenites) were derived from older uplifted basement rocks (feldspar-rich and, to some extent, rock fragments-rich sandstones), thrust-and-fold belt deposits and from coeval carbonate platforms developed at the basin margins. This study demonstrates that the integration of tectono-stratigraphy, petrology and geochemistry of arenites provides a powerful tool to constrain the spatial and temporal variation in provenance during the tectonic evolution of foreland basins.
