Hassouba Abstract Spatio temporal dynamics of the positive column of a dc neon glow discharge is studied and investigated experimentally and theoretically. Spatio temporal analysis by means of biorthogonal decomposition method (BOD) gives insights into the mechanism of irregularity and can be employed for characterization of spatio- temporal complexity. In the weak nonlinear region, the wave dynamics is approximated by an amplitude equation of the Ginzburg-Landau equation (CGLE) with complex coefficients and an additional integral term based on a fluid model. In the present work we deal with irregular spatio-temporal data. A comparison between the numerical analysis of the experimental data and simulation results are studied. Paul Elhorst Space-time data; multilevel analysis; spatial autocorrelation; labour force participation; labour market policy Abstract., This study investigates the causes of variation in regional labour force participation rates in a cross-country perspective. A microeconomic framework of the labour force participation decision is aggregated across individuals to obtain an explanatory model of regional participation rates in which both regional-level and national-level variables serve as explanatory variables. An appropriate econometric model of random coefficients for the regional variables and fixed coefficients for the national variables is developed, further taking into account that observations may be correlated over time and in space and that some of the explanatory variables are not strictly exogenous. This model is estimated for men and for women, using annual 1983,1997 Eurostat data from 157 regions across 13 EU countries. The hypotheses that regional participation rates in the EU are determined by a common structure and that labour force participation can be encouraged by a common policy must be strongly rejected. Genton Abstract Statistical modeling of space-time data has often been based on separable covariance functions, that is, covariances that can be written as a product of a purely spatial covariance and a purely temporal covariance. The main reason is that the structure of separable covariances dramatically reduces the number of parameters in the covariance matrix and thus facilitates computational procedures for large space-time data sets. In this paper, we discuss separable approximations of nonseparable space-time covariance matrices. Specifically, we describe the nearest Kronecker product approximation, in the Frobenius norm, of a space-time covariance matrix. The algorithm is simple to implement and the solution preserves properties of the space-time covariance matrix, such as symmetry, positive definiteness, and other structures. The separable approximation allows for fast kriging of large space-time data sets. We present several illustrative examples based on an application to data of Irish wind speeds, showing that only small differences in prediction error arise while computational savings for large data sets can be obtained. Paul Elhorst This paper presents a first-order autoregressive distributed lag model in both space and time. It is shown that this model encompasses a wide series of simpler models frequently used in the analysis of space-time data as well as models that better fit the data and have never been used before. A framework is developed to determine which model is the most likely candidate to study space-time data. As an application, the relationship between the labor force participation rate and the unemployment rate is estimated using regional data of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom derived from Eurostat, 1983,1993.
