Prevalence of obesity and overweight among adults in Iran

Summary The prevalence of overweight and obesity in most developed and developing countries have been increasing markedly over the past two decades. This increase includes all ages, genders, racial and ethnic groups, income, and educational levels. This study examined the prevalence of overweight and obesity among adults aged 25,55 years in Shiraz (Southern Iran). The data are based on a random multistage sample survey of 2282 married adults (1141 pairs) living is Shiraz, whose heights and weights were measured in the 2002,2003 academic year. The prevalence of overweight or obesity (body mass index , 25) was 49.7% in men and 63.9% in women. The prevalence of obesity (body mass index , 30) was 10.5% and 22.5% in men and women, respectively, which shows an increased secular change of 5.8% in men and 17.4% in women during a 14-year period. Overweight and obesity are common in Iran. Obesity and overweight were significantly more common among women than among men (P -valve = 0.000). There is a need to establish programmes for prevention and treatment of obesity especially Iranian's women. [source]


Inherited coagulation disorders in southern Iran

Summary., A comprehensive survey concerning the Shiraz Hemophilia Society and the associated haemophilia treatment centre was undertaken in April 2002 to collect data on demographics, signs and symptoms in the southern Iranian population with haemophilia and allied disorders. The total number of patients with coagulation disorders was 367. Haemophilia A (factor [F] VIII deficiency) was found in 271, 39 had haemophilia B (FIX deficiency) and 24 had von Willebrand disease. The rare coagulation disorders (n = 33) included 11 patients with FX deficiency; 10 with FVII; six with FXIII; two with afibrinogenaemia; two with FXI; one with combined FVIII and FV; and one with combined FVII, FVIII and FIX deficiency. The prevalence was 6.64 per 100 000 inhabitants. The most common symptoms were haemarthrosis, haematomas and epistaxis. None of the patients were human immunodeficiency virus positive but 47 (15%) were hepatitis C virus positive and two (0.7%) were hepatitis B positive, so that the rate of transfusion-transmitted infections was lower compared with other populations. Glanzmann thrombasthenia and Bernard,Soulier syndrome in south Iran

Summary Glanzmann thrombasthenia (GT) and Bernard,Soulier syndrome (BSS) are two rare inherited disorders of platelet function. In this study, we report the demographic, clinical and biological characteristics of 23 patients with GT and of seven patients with BSS from southern Iran who had been followed for many years but fully characterized only recently, when platelet aggregation tests and flow cytometric studies became available for the first time in the country. We found a high prevalence of both diseases that can be explained by the high rate of consanguineous marriages in south Iran. Patients affected by GT and BSS suffer mainly from mucocutaneous bleedings causing anemia and transfusion requirements. [source]


Prevalence of gallstone disease in Iran

Abstract Background: Prevalence of gallstone disease is different depending on the geographic region involved. Few studies, in Asia but not from Iran, about the frequency of gallstone disease have been published. The aim of this study is to examine the prevalence of gallstone disease in Iran. Methods: Four hundred and seventy-seven nomads from southern Iran, 513 industrial laborers older than 34 years, and 421 laborers from a pharmaceutical company above 30 years of age, and 471 elderly persons from three nursing homes near Tehran underwent abdominal sonography. Results: There were 1373 men and 509 women. Eighty-nine subjects had gallstone disease and 10.1% of them were cholecystectomized. While the prevalence in the men and women in the age group 31,40 years was very low (0.3% in men and 1.8% in women), it increases sharply in men older than 60 years and women older than 50 years to more than 10-fold (12.5 and 24.6% in male and female with an age 71,80 years, respectively). Conclusion: In Iran, gallstone disease is very uncommon in middle-aged people, but increases sharply in older people. However, this does not reach the high prevalence seen in Western countries. The intake of a high fiber-containing diet, a low number of overweight people, smoking habit and hyperlipidemia are probably the cause for this low prevalence. [source]


Physiological and Biochemical Characteristics of Iranian Strains of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri, the Causal Agent of Citrus bacterial Canker Disease

Twenty-four strains of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (Xac), the causal agent of bacterial canker of citrus, isolated from Mexican lime (Citrus aurantifolia) and lemon (Citrus limon) in southern Iran, were characterized phenotypically. Strains were all pathogenic on C. aurantifolia. Sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis revealed slight differences in soluble protein profiles among the strains. Based on host range specificity and phenotypic characteristics, representative strains were differentiated into two groups of Asiatic (A) and atypical Asiatic (aA) forms. DNA fingerprinting analysis using EcoRI as the restriction endonuclease showed a negligible difference in restriction pattern between the two groups. On the basis of isozymic analysis, the two groups were distinct with respect to superoxide dismutase (SOD) and esterase (EST) banding patterns. Plasmid DNA profile analysis showed that the bacterial strains were different from each other in terms of plasmid number and molecular weight. Phage typing study revealed that most of group A strains were susceptible to Cp1 and/or Cp2 and some were resistant to both phage types including the strain in aA group. Bacteriocin production test indicated that there was a variation among Xac strains using different indicators for each bacteriocin producer. It is concluded that the Iranian strains of Xac are heterogeneous and constitute a subgroup(s) within the pathotype A. Alle Stämme waren für C. aurantifolia pathogen. Eine SDS-PAGE-Analyse zeigte, daß zwischen den Stämmen geringfügige Unterschiede bei den Profilen der löslichen Proteine bestanden. Auf Grundlage der Spezifität des Wirtsspektrums und phänotypischer Merkmale wurden repräsentative Stämme in die zwei Gruppen asiatische (A) und atypische asiatische (aA) Formen eingeteilt. Eine Analyse mit DNA-Fingerabdrücken, wobei EcoRI als Restriktionsendonuclease diente, zeigte einen vernachlässigbar kleinen Unterschied bei den Restriktionsmustern der beiden Gruppen. Die Isoenzymanalyse ergab Unterschiede zwischen beiden Gruppen bezüglich der Bandenmuster von Superoxiddismutase (SOD) und Esterase (EST). Eine Analyse der Plasmid-DNA-Profile zeigte, daß die Bakterienstämme unterschiedliche Plasmidzahlen und verschiedene Molekülmassen aufwiesen. Eine Phagentypisierung ergab, daß die meisten Stämme der Gruppe A anfällig für Cp1 und/oder Cp2 waren; einige waren resistent gegen beide Phagentypen, darunter der Stamm in der aA-Gruppe. Ein Test der Bacteriocinproduktion ergab, daß die Xac -Stämme variierten; hier wurden verschiedene Indikatoren für jeden Bakteriocinbildner verwendet. Es wird gefolgert, daß die iranischen Stämme von Xac heterogen sind und eine oder mehrere Untergruppen innerhalb des Pathotyps A bilden. [source]


Prevalence of obesity among schoolchildren in Iran

Summary The prevalence of overweight and obesity among schoolchildren aged 6.5,11.5 years in Shiraz (southern Iran) are presented in this paper. The body mass index (BMI) percentiles of these children are compared with the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reference data and with the Iranian standard. The data are based on a random multistage sample survey of 2397 healthy school attenders (1268 boys, 1129 girls) living in Shiraz, whose heights and weights were measured in the 2002,2003 academic year. Joint height and weight measurements were obtained for 2195 schoolchildren (91.6%), consisting of 1138 boys (89.7%) and 1057 girls (93.6%). A total of 77 boys (6.8%) and 40 girls (3.8%) were overweight, and the difference between them was significant (P = 0.001). However, obesity was significantly less prevalent in boys (3.3%) than in girls (6.1%) (P = 0.001). Our children's median BMI lie almost on the 38th centile of the CDC reference data, whereas that of their counterparts born more than 10 years ago lay on the 20th centile of their American counterparts, showing the development of children's obesity in a period of less than 15 years in Iran. A positive secular trend in BMI has been seen during the past decade in Iran, suggesting policymakers and health professionals should pay special attention to children's health. [source]


Growth velocity standards from longitudinally measured infants of age 0,2 years born in Shiraz, southern Iran

This paper presents growth velocity data for a cohort of 317 infants (164 girls and 153 boys) born in Shiraz, southern Iran, in 1996 and followed longitudinally for 2 years. The growth velocity of five anthropometric measurements (height, weight, arm, head, and chest circumferences) declined rapidly from 2 weeks to 7 months of age and less steeply thereafter for both sexes. Growth velocities for boys were higher than girls in the first months but did not differ significantly later on. However, growth velocity centiles for girls lie below those for boys throughout the age range studied. Weight velocities in the Iranian infants were significantly lower than for corresponding infants in the U.K., the Middle East, and Africa, but height velocities were generally higher. Am. J. Hum. Fold evolution and drainage development in the Zagros mountains of Fars province, SE Iran

ABSTRACT A central question in structural geology is whether, and by what mechanism, active faults (and the folds often associated with them) grow in length as they accumulate displacement. An obstacle in our understanding of these processes is the lack of examples in which the lateral growth of active structures can be demonstrated definitively, as geomorphic indicators of lateral propagation are often difficult, or even impossible to distinguish from the effects of varying lithology or non-uniform displacement and slip histories. In this paper we examine, using the Zagros mountains of southern Iran as our example, the extent to which qualitative analysis of satellite imagery and digital topography can yield insight into the growth, lateral propagation, and interaction of individual fold segments in regions of active continental shortening. The Zagros fold-and-thrust belt contains spectacular whaleback anticlines that are well exposed in resistant Tertiary and Mesozoic limestone, are often >100 km in length, and which contain a large proportion of the global hydrocarbon reserves. In one example, Kuh-e Handun, where an anticline is mantled by soft Miocene sediments, direct evidence of lateral fold propagation is recorded in remnants of consequent drainage patterns on the fold flanks that do not correspond to the present-day topography. We suggest that in most other cases, the soft Miocene and Pliocene sediments that originally mantled the folds, and which would have recorded early stages in the growth histories, have been completely stripped away, thus removing any direct geomorphic evidence of lateral propagation. However, many of the long fold chains of the Zagros do appear to be formed from numerous segments that have coalesced. If our interpretations are correct, the merger of individual fold segments that have grown in length is a major control on the development of through-going drainage and sedimentation patterns in the Zagros, and may be an important process in other regions of crustal shortening as well. Abundant earthquakes in the Zagros show that large seismogenic thrust faults must be present at depth, but these faults rarely reach the Earth's surface, and their relationship to the surface folding is not well constrained. The individual fold segments that we identify are typically 20,40 km in length, which correlates well with the maximum length of the seismogenic basement faults suggested from the largest observed thrusting earthquakes. This correlation between the lengths of individual fold segments and the lengths of seismogenic faults at depth suggest that it is possible, at least in some cases, that there may be a direct relationship between folding and faulting in the Zagros, with individual fold segments underlain by discrete thrusts.
