Patterns of interspecific associations of stem gallers on willows

Abstract., The pattern of interspecific associations of three stem-galling sawfly species (Euura atra, E. elaeagnos, E. purpureae) and three stem-galling gallmidge species (Rabdophaga sp. 3,5) was investigated on five willow taxa (Salix alba, S. fragilis, S. × rubens, S. elaeagnos, S. purpurea) at five natural sites in Central Europe. The willow species harboured specific species associations of two stem gallers, each pair consisting of one Euura and one Rabdophaga species. The stem gallers were patchily distributed and their densities varied significantly among willow host plant species, host plant individuals, and host plant sexes. Four of the six species showed a significant increase in galling rate with shoot length. The other two species were the sawfly and cecidomyiid pair that induce galls on S. purpurea. The preference of stem gallers to longer shoots was generally not related to higher larval performance in terms of survival. Only one species, Rabdophaga sp. 5, was found to be more abundant on male plants. The correlation of densities of the species pairs of stem gallers was independent of willow sexes. Species pairs of stem gallers co-occurring on the same willow species tended to attack different shoots within the same host plant individual. When species pairs co-occurred on shoots they were usually found in similar densities as when occurring alone on shoots. The stem-galling sawflies usually formed galls at the basal part of a shoot, whereas the gallmidge R. sp. 5 (R. sp. 3 and R. sp. 4 showed no clear tendency) preferred the middle or distal part of a shoot. Microscopic structure of the sperm storage tubules in the polygynandrous alpine accentor, Prunella collaris (Aves)

Abstract We describe the microscopic structure of the sperm storage tubules (SSTs) of the polygynandrous alpine accentor, Prunella collaris. The SSTs were found at the utero-vaginal junction of the oviduct and were composed of a single layer of columnar epithelium. The cells of the tubule proper were non-ciliated and had a round or oval nucleus in their basal portion. Their cytoplasm was finely or coarsely vacuolated due to lipid inclusions. Under the electron microscope, the epithelial cells exhibited a number of mitochondria, Golgi bodies, occasional lysosome-like dense bodies, granular endoplasmic reticula, junctional complex, and tonofilaments. The apical margin of the cells was fringed with numerous microvilli. The epithelial lining of the SSTs was devoid of mucous cells, but showed occasional infiltration of lymphoid cells. No contractile elements were found in association with the SSTs, but a close apposition of unmyelinated nerve fibres to the basal part of the SST cells was recognized. Intraluminal sperm were arranged in bundles, and their heads were orientated towards the distal portion of the SSTs. Evidence for engulfment of sperm by the SST cells was obtained for the first time. A sign of atrophy or regression of the SSTs was found in one specimen. [source]


The exopolysaccharide of Rhizobium sp.

Brassica napus roots but contributes to root colonization, YAS34 is not necessary for biofilm formation on Arabidopsis thaliana
Summary Microbial exopolysaccharides (EPSs) play key roles in plant,microbe interactions, such as biofilm formation on plant roots and legume nodulation by rhizobia. Here, we focused on the function of an EPS produced by Rhizobium sp. YAS34 in the colonization and biofilm formation on non-legume plant roots (Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica napus). Using random transposon mutagenesis, we isolated an EPS-deficient mutant of strain YAS34 impaired in a glycosyltransferase gene (gta). Wild type and mutant strains were tagged with a plasmid-born GFP and, for the first time, the EPS produced by the wild-type strain was seen in the rhizosphere using selective carbohydrate probing with a fluorescent lectin and confocal laser-scanning microscopy. We show for the fist time that Rhizobium forms biofilms on roots of non-legumes, independently of the EPS synthesis. When produced by strain YAS34 wild type, EPS is targeted at specific parts of the plant root system. Nutrient fluctuations, root exudates and bacterial growth phase can account for such a production pattern. The EPS synthesis in Rhizobium sp. YAS34 is not essential for biofilm formation on roots, but is critical to colonization of the basal part of the root system and increasing the stability of root-adhering soil. Thus, in Rhizobium sp. YAS34 and non-legume interactions, microbial EPS is implicated in root,soil interface, root colonization, but not in biofilm formation. [source]


Pendleian (early Serpukhovian) marine carbonates from SW Spain: sedimentology, biostratigraphy and depositional model

Abstract The San Antonio,La Juliana tectono-sedimentary unit contains the only Namurian marine carbonates in the southwestern part of the Iberian Peninsula. The analysis of this unit is fundamental in understanding the sedimentary evolution and tectonic movements which operated during the Namurian in this area. Using foraminifera the succession has been assigned to two biozones (Zones 17 and 18), both occurring in the Pendleian (early Namurian). Seven stratigraphic sections have been analysed: San Antonio, Burjadillo, Lavadero de la Mina, Cornuda, Lozana, Caridad and Via Crucis. The stratigraphic succession of the San Antonio,La Juliana Unit consists of olistolites in the basal part, with common debris-flow deposits (mainly of carbonates, with minor siliciclastic rocks), and turbidites, all of them embedded in shales. These rocks, interpeted as slope deposits, pass up into shallow-water platform facies, with sediments characteristic of the inner platform and tidal flats. Above these rocks, terrigenous deltaic deposits occur. Thus, the stratigraphic sections show an overall shallowing-upward trend. The isolation of some outcrops, and the duplication and absence of some parts of the stratigraphic succession are explained by tectonic movements. Overall, tectonic factors seem to be the main control rather than glacio-eustatic or autocyclic processes, and sedimentation took place in a strike-slip regime. Attachment to the substrate by soft coral fragments: desmocyte development, structure, and function

Abstract. Pieces cut from colonies of the soft coral Dendronephthya hemprichi exhibited rapid and effective attachment to hard surfaces. Attachment involved development of root-like processes (RLPs), which appeared at the basal part of the fragment 4 days after its removal from the colony. The fine structural changes and cascade of cellular events occurring in the RLP before and after attachment were studied using SEM, TEM, and LM. The epidermis of the RLPs is actively involved in the attachment process and several distinct phases are documented: appearance of numerous oval vesicles, extrusion of these vesicles resulting in the formation of an outer layer composed of extracellular organic matrix and organellar debris, which functions as an adhesive device leading to initial attachment. The latter phase was followed by the formation of desmocytes, which develop in the RLP epidermis and function as anchoring devices, mediating the firm attachment of the fragment to the substrate. This is the first evidence among anthozoans that desmocytes play an active role in anchoring tissue to substrate and thus extends the range of functions exhibited by desmocytes among anthozoans. Surviving the end-Ordovician extinctions: evidence from the earliest Silurian brachiopods of northeastern Jiangxi and western Zhejiang provinces, East China

Earliest Rhuddanian (Silurian) brachiopods are recorded from the basal part of the Lower Llandovery Shiyang and Anji formations in western Zhejiang and northeastern Jiangxi provinces, East China. Associated graptolites including Normalograptus jerini indicate the lowest Rhuddanian Akidograptus ascensus Biozone. The surviving brachiopod fauna includes 19 genera dominated by orthids and strophomenids, whereas pentamerids and atrypids that inhabited mainly warmer water regimes, and were almost absent in the cool/cold Hirnantia Fauna, occur rarely in the studied fauna. Each family is represented by a single genus that seeded their recovery. The predominance of these long-ranging and widely distributed genera is one of major characters of the brachiopod survival in east China. From qualitative and quantitative analysis of faunal composition, diversity and abundance, with evidences from palaeoecology and palaeogeography, the Levenea qianbeiensis Association, Katastrophomena-Leptaena-Levenea Association, and Glyptorthis-Epitomyonia-Levenea Association are recognized and assigned to BA (Benthic Assemblage) 2, BA3, and an ecozone close to the BA3-4 boundary respectively. No Lazarus genera are recorded in this study. Skenidioides and Epitomyonia were chiefly regarded as deeper-water taxa in the Ordovician and Silurian, but are recorded from shallow-water in east China during the early Rhuddanian, indicating an ecologic experiment with these taxa migrating from deep into shallower, better-oxygenated sites at the crisis time and during the subsequent survival interval. This study further demonstrates that the brachiopod faunal turnover after the end-Ordovician extinctions may not have been completed until the late Rhuddanian in South China. [source]


Morphology and ultrastructure of the female accessory sex glands in various crickets (Orthoptera, Saltatoria, Gryllidae)

Abstract In the present study, the morphology and ultrastructure of the accessory sex glands in females of the three cricket species Teleogryllus commodus, Gryllus bimaculatus, and Gryllus assimilis were subject to a detailed comparison. Within the observed crickets, the pairy glands are uniformly located in the 6th and 7th abdominal segment, joining the genital chamber lateral to the terminal papilla. Each gland is composed of an apical region (R3), consisting of the end tubules which produce the main amount of secretion, a middle region (R2) storing and leading the secretion to the orifice, and a basal region (R1) defining the orifice and most basal part of the gland. Concerning the size, number of ramifications, and length/width ratio, the investigated organs are marked by great variations among the species, ranging from anisometric glands (length/width < or > 1) with low number of ramifications in Teleogryllus commodus and Gryllus assimilis to nearly isometric glands with very numerous (up to 30) ramifications in Gryllus bimaculatus. The morphology of the respective glands is uniformly expressed by an epithelium composed of a basal lamina, one layer of gland cells, and a luminal, duct-less cuticular intima forming specific spines and hair-like processes. The ultrastructure of single gland cells is marked by a basal region with a large elliptic nucleus and intracellular cisternae formed by deep invaginations of the basal cell membrane. The apical part contains numerous lipid- and protein-forming compartments, mitochondria of cristae type, vesicles, and lipid drops. The apical cell surface is enlarged by forming a dense layer of microvilli. The lipophilic secretion produced by the glands is thought to be used as a lubricant in the ovipositor during egg-laying. Leptomeningeal carcinomatosis from urinary bladder adenocarcinoma: A clinicopathological case study

We report a 73-year-old male patient with leptomeningeal metastasis from urinary bladder adenocarcinoma. He was presented, with, prominent, hyperactive, delirium, during the course of the disease. Meningeal carcinomatosis was detected 5 days before his death, but the primary site of the malignant tumor could not be determined. Necropsy revealed leptomeningeal infiltration of many adenocarcinoma cells that covered the cerebrum. The leptomeninges of the right middle frontal gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, precentral gyrus and inferior parietal lobe were most severely affected by tumor cell infiltration. Cerebral edema was found to extensively cover the basal part of the temporal lobe. In the cerebrum, tumor cells were clustered in the perivascular spaces and had invaded localized areas of the frontal lobe. Vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM)-1 expression was detected in the small vessels of the cerebral upper cortical layers and of temporal subcortical u-fibers. Numerous astrocytes positive for cytokeratin AE1/AE3 were found in the frontal and temporal lobes. Meningeal carcinomatosis from urinary bladder adenocarcinoma is extremely rare and up-regulation of the adhesion molecules in the meningeal adenocarcinoma was confirmed. [source]


Physical modelling of bedrock brecciation by ice segregation in permafrost

Abstract The lower half of a large block of moist chalk was maintained at subzero temperatures while the upper half was cyclically frozen and thawed, simulating 19 seasonal temperature cycles in an active layer above permafrost. During the experiment, the rock surface heaved vertically by at least 34.7 mm. Sixty-one percent of the heave occurred during freezing periods, and is attributed primarily to ice segregation accompanying upward freezing from the permafrost table during the early stages of simulated winters. Thirty-nine percent of the heave occurred during thawing periods, and is attributed to ice segregation in the frozen rock beneath the thaw front during the mid to late stages of simulated summers. By the end of the experiment, the middle horizon of the chalk, representing the upper part of the simulated permafrost and the basal part of the active layer, had become strongly brecciated and rich in segregated ice. The style of brecciation has similarities with that in perennially-frozen limestone, sandstone and shale in Svalbard and Canada, and chalk frozen during Quaternary cold stages in France and England. These similarities suggest that ice segregation during perennial and seasonal freezing is an important process of weathering and coarse-sediment supply in areas of frost-susceptible bedrock. RÉSUMÉ La moitié inférieure d'un gros bloc de craie humide a été maintenue à des températures inférieures à zéro degré (maintien d'un pergélisol) pendant que sa moitié supérieure était soumise alternativement au gel et au dégel, simulant ainsi 19 cycles saisonniers dans la couche active. Pendant l'expérience, la surface de la roche s'est soulevée verticalement de 34,7 mm. Soixante et un % du gonflement a été acquis pendant les périodes de gel simulant les hivers et attribué essentiellement à la ségrégation de glace accompagnant un gel à partir du sommet du pergélisol au début de ces périodes. Trente neuf % du gonflement a été enregistré pendant le milieu et la fin des périodes de dégel simulant les étés. Ceci est considéré comme le résultat de regels en-dessous du niveau atteint par le front de dégel. A la fin de l'expérience, la partie médiane du bloc, correspondant au sommet du pergélisol et à la base de la couche active, est apparue très fragmentée et riche en glace de ségrégation. Le type de fragmentation offre des aspects semblables à ceux qu'on observe dans les calcaires, grès et schistes gelés en permanence du Svalbard et du Canada et les craies soumises aux gels des stades froids du Quaternaire en France et en Angleterre. Cela suggère que la ségrégation de la glace pendant les périodes de gel permanent ou saisonnier est un important processus de fragmentation des roches et de fourniture de sédiments grossiers dans les régions où les roches sont sensibles au gel. Cladosiphon umezakii sp. nov. (Ectocarpales, Phaeophyceae) from Japan

SUMMARY The new species Cladosiphon umezakii Ajisaka (Ectocarpales, Phaeophyceae) is described from Japan based on morphology and DNA sequences. The species resembles Cladosiphon okamuranus Tokida in its gross morphology; somewhat slimy, cylindrical, multiaxial and sympodial erect thallus, arising from a small disc-shaped holdfast, and branching once to twice. However, C. umezakii has considerably longer assimilatory filaments (up to 840 ,m long, composed of up to 90 cells) than any known taxa of the genus. The species is a winter to spring annual, growing on lower intertidal to subtidal rocks of more or less exposed sites on the north-eastern coast of Kyushu and on both the Pacific and the Sea of Japan coasts of Honshu. Specimens from the Sea of Japan coast had both unilocular and plurilocular zoidangia, whereas those from Kyushu and from the Pacific had only unilocular zoidangia. Unilocular zoidangia were formed on the basal part of assimilatory filaments, and plurilocular ones were transformed from the distal part of assimilatory filaments. DNA sequences of the Rubisco-spacer (rbc -spacer) region and the nuclear rDNA ITS region (ITS1, 5.8S and ITS2) supported the distinctness of the species. [source]


Free IAA in stigmas and styles during pollen germination and pollen tube growth of Nicotiana tabacum

Although many studies have emphasized the importance of auxin in plant growth and development, the thorough understanding of its effect on pollen,pistil interactions is largely unknown. In this study, we investigated the role of free IAA in pollen,pistil interactions during pollen germination and tube growth in Nicotiana tabacum L. through using histo and subcellular immunolocalization with auxin monoclonal antibodies, quantification by HPLC and ELISA together with GUS staining in DR5::GUS -transformed plants. The results showed that free IAA in unpollinated styles was higher in the apical part and basal part than in the middle part, and it was more abundant in the transmitting tissue (TT). At the stage of pollen germination, IAA reached its highest content in the stigma and was mainly distributed in TT. After the pollen tubes entered the styles, the signal increased in the part where pollen tubes would enter and then rapidly declined in the part where pollen tubes had penetrated. Subcellular localization confirmed the presence of IAA in TT cells of stigmas and styles. Accordingly, a schematic diagram summarizes the changing pattern of free IAA level during flowering, pollination and pollen tube growth. Furthermore, we presented evidence that low concentration of exogenous IAA could, to a certain extent, facilitate in vitro pollen tube growth. These results suggest that IAA may be directly or indirectly involved in the pollen,pistil interactions. Additionally, some improvements of the IAA immunolocalization technique were made. [source]


Aerenchyma formation and radial O2 loss along adventitious roots of wheat with only the apical root portion exposed to O2 deficiency

ABSTRACT This study investigated aerenchyma formation and function in adventitious roots of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) when only a part of the root system was exposed to O2 deficiency. Two experimental systems were used: (1) plants in soil waterlogged at 200 mm below the surface; or (2) a nutrient solution system with only the apical region of a single root exposed to deoxygenated stagnant agar solution with the remainder of the root system in aerated nutrient solution. Porosity increased two- to three-fold along the entire length of the adventitious roots that grew into the water-saturated zone 200 mm below the soil surface, and also increased in roots that grew in the aerobic soil above the water-saturated zone. Likewise, adventitious roots with only the tips growing into deoxygenated stagnant agar solution developed aerenchyma along the entire main axis. Measurements of radial O2 loss (ROL), taken using root-sleeving O2 electrodes, showed this aerenchyma was functional in conducting O2. The ROL measured near tips of intact roots in deoxygenated stagnant agar solution, while the basal part of the root remained in aerated solution, was sustained when the atmosphere around the shoot was replaced by N2. This illustrates the importance of O2 diffusion into the basal regions of roots within an aerobic zone, and the subsequent longitudinal movement of O2 within the aerenchyma, to supply O2 to the tip growing in an O2 deficient zone. Multiple Sources of Metals of Mineralization in Lower Cambrian Black Shales of South China: Evidence from Geochemical and Petrographic Study

Abstract Black shales of the Lower Cambrian Niutitang Formation in southern China (Huangjiawan mine, Zunyi region, northern part of the Guizhou Province) host regionally distributed stratiform polymetallic Ni-Mo-platinum group elements (PGE)-Au phosphate- and sulfide-rich ores. These are confined to a ,0.2-m thick ore horizon composed of mineralized bodies of algal onkolites, phosphate nodules, and sulfide and shale clasts in a mineralized phosphate- and organic matter-rich matrix. Compared to footwall and hanging wall shales, the ore bed is strongly enriched in Ni (up to 100-fold), As (up to 97-fold), Mo (up to 95-fold), Sb (up to 67-fold), Rh (up to 49-fold), Cu (up to 37-fold), Pd (up to 33-fold), Ru (up to 24-fold), Zn (up to 23-fold), Pt (up to 21-fold), Ir (up to 15-fold), Co (up to 14-fold), and Pb (up to 13-fold). Even footwall and hanging wall black shales are significantly enriched by Mo (21-fold) and Ni (12-fold) but depleted in Cr in comparison to average Cambrian black shale. Organic matter is represented by separate accumulations dispersed in the rock matrix or as biotic bitumen droplets and veinlets in ore clasts. Similar organic carbon (Corg) values in an ore bed and enclosing footwall and hanging wall shales of little mineralization indicate that metal accumulation was not controlled only by biogenic productivity and organic matter accumulation rate. Evaporitic conditions during sedimentation of the basal part of the Niutitang Formation were documented by an occurrence of preserved Ni-, V-, Cr-, and Cu-enriched phosphate-rich hardground with halite and anhydrite pseudomorphs on the paleosurface of the underlying Neoproterozoic carbonates. Neoproterozoic black shales of the Doushantuo Formation are characterized by increased metal concentrations. Comparison of metal abundances in both hardground and Doushantuo black shales indicate that black shales could have become a source of metal-rich hardground during weathering. The polymetallic Ni-Mo-PGE sulfide-rich ore bed is interpreted to represent a remnant of shallow-water hardground horizon rich in metals, which originated in a sediment-starved, semi-restricted, seawater environment. During the Early Cambrian transgression an influx of fresh seawater and intensive evaporation, together with the hydrothermal enrichment of seawater in a semi-restricted basin, resulted in the formation of dense metalliferous brines; co-precipitation of metals together with phosphates and sulfides occurred at or above the oxic,anoxic sediment interface. Metal-enriched hardground was disintegrated by the action of waves or bottom currents and deposited in a deeper part of the anoxic basin. Contemporaneously with the formation of a polymetallic Ni-Mo-PGE-Au sulfide ore bed, economic sedimentary exhalative (SEDEX)-type barite deposits were forming in a stratigraphically and geotectonically similar setting. The results of geochemical study at the Shang Gongtang SEDEX-type Ba deposit indicate that concentrations of Ag, As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, V, Zn and other metals decrease from top of the barite body toward the hanging wall black shale. Lower Cambrian black shales of the Niutitang Formation above the barite body also display similar element abundances as Neoproterozoic black shales of the Doushantuo Formation, developed in the footwall of the barite body. But the geochemical composition of the sulfide layer is different from the Ni-Mo ore bed, showing only elevated Pb, Cu, Ni and Mo values. It is suggested that hydrothermal brines at Shang Gongtang might have leached metals from footwall Neoproterozoic sequences and became, after mixing with normal seawater, an additional source of Ag, Cr, Cu, Pb, Sb, Zn, Ni, PGE, V and other metals. Optimization of Repolarization during Biventricular Pacing: A New Target in Patients with Biventricular Devices?

Background: Evaluation of repolarization during sequentional biventricular pacing. Methods: Patients with biventricular devices, and left ventricular leads placed to the basal part of lateral left ventricular wall were enrolled. QRS, QTc, JTc, and corrected Tpeak-Tend intervals were compared during sequentional biventricular, left ventricular, and right ventricular pacing. Results: Five patients with nonischemic and five with ischemic cardiomyopathy due to anterior myocardial infarction were enrolled. No correlation was observed between values of repolarization among patients. The optimal values of repolarization were significantly different from values of echocardiographically guided hemodynamic optimization. Two patients with biventricular pacing-induced ventricular fibrillation were successfully treated by reprogramming of V-V delay according to interventricular delay resulting in shorter Tpeak-Tend interval, although delayed effect of amiodarone in one of these patients cannot be ruled out. Conclusions: Patients with biventricular devices may be prone to development of ventricular arrhythmias depending on programmed V-V interval. We suggest that optimization of repolarization may be performed in patients with biventricular pacemakers in the absence of backup ICD and those with frequent episodes of ventricular tachyarrhythmias, although this finding deserves further study. Late Mesozoic Chresmodids with Forewing from Inner Mongolia, China (Polyneoptera: Archaeorthoptera)

Abstract: Three new species of Chresmodidae are described. They belong to two different genera: Chresmoda multinervis sp. nov., Chresmoda shihi sp. nov. and Jurachresmoda sanyica sp. nov. A study of the forewing venation is provided. Longitudinal veins are mostly parallel; costal area is broad at the basal and narrowing distally; ScP is probably extending close to the wing apex; R is parallel at length to ScP; MA is running close to R, with two long parallel branches; MA branched-off basally; while MP is not branched until the middle of the wing. However, the important basal part of MP and CuP is poorly preserved. In addition, unique fringing hairs on the mid legs of C. shihi sp. nov. and J. sanyica sp. nov. are described and compared with Jurachresmoda gaskelli Zhang, Ren and Shih, 2008. [source]


A New Symmetrodont Mammal with Fur Impressions from the Mesozoic of China

Abstract, Western Liaoning of northeastern China is world-renowned for the Mesozoic Jehol biota, especially for yielding many feathered dinosaurs, primitive birds, mammals and fossil angiosperm. This paper describes a complete specimen of a symmetrodont mammal with well-preserved hairs and soft tissue from the basal part of the Yixian Formation in the Sihetun area, Beipiao, western Liaoning. It is significant for understanding the morphology, osteology, phylogeny and life habits of Mesozoic symmetrodont mammals. [source]


Thrips see red , flower colour and the host relationships of a polyphagous anthophilic thrips

Abstract 1.,The common blossom thrips, Frankliniella schultzei, is a polyphagous anthophilic species that colonises a wide range of host-plant species across different plant taxa. The environmental cues used by these polyphagous insects to recognise and locate host plants are not known. We therefore determined if colour is an important environmental signal used by F. schultzei to recognise flowers of eight of its more significant host-plant species. 2.,The effect of flower colour on the colonisation of different host plant species by F. schultzei was investigated by collecting and analysing the following: (a) numbers of thrips from different heights and aspects of the primary host plant Malvaviscus arboreus, (b) thrips distribution within flowers of Hibiscus rosasinensis, (c) colour reflectance from flowers of eight different host-plant species, and (d) reflectance from different coloured sticky traps and the number of thrips trapped on them at different times of the day and on different dates. 3.,The results indicate that: (a) the thrips (both sexes) concentrate towards the top of the primary host plant M. arboreus and are not distributed differentially according to sunny or shady aspect of the plant, (b) the number of female thrips on H. rosasinensis was higher in anthers compared to petals (corolla) and the basal parts of the flower, and males were as numerous on the petals as were females, and (c) there is a common floral reflectance pattern (but with different intensities) across the eight host plant species, mainly in the red part of the spectrum (600,700 nm). 4.,Results of colour sticky trapping show that red attracts more female thrips compared to any other colour and that most were caught between 09.00 and 11.00 hours. By contrast, more male thrips were trapped between 07.00 and 09.00 hours. Males were more evenly distributed across the different colours but the highest numbers were associated with the yellow traps. 5.,The higher densities of thrips at the top of their host plant may be related to the early morning (07.00,11.00 hours) activity of the thrips, when the top portions of the plant are more exposed to sunlight. The sex-related distributions of F. schultzei thrips across time, coloured sticky traps, and various parts of the flowers seem to be related to mating swarm formation by the males, on the one hand, and the relative frequency and intensity of the use of M. arboreus by the females, on the other, as a feeding and oviposition site. Frankliniella schultzei females respond more strongly to red than to any other colours, so it is predicted that the spectral properties of colour recognition by this species will correlate with the predominant red reflectance of its primary host, M. arboreus, and that there may well be a sex-related difference in colour recognition within this species. Evolution of the Pan-African Wadi Haimur metamorphic sole, Eastern Desert, Egypt

By comparison with the general features of metamorphic soles (e.g. vertical and lateral extension, metamorphic grade and diagnostic mineral parageneses, deformation and dominant rock types), it is inferred that the amphibolites, metagabbros and hornblendites of the Wadi Um Ghalaga,Wadi Haimur area in the southern part of the Eastern Desert of Egypt represent the metamorphic sole of the Wadi Haimur ophiolite belt. The overlying ultramafic rocks represent overthrusted mantle peridotite. Mineral compositions and thermobarometric studies indicate that the rocks of the metamorphic sole record metamorphic conditions typical of such an environment. The highest P,T conditions (c. 700 °C and 6.5,8.5 kbar) are preserved in clinopyroxene amphibolites and garnet amphibolites from the top of the metamorphic sole, which is exposed in the southern part of the study area. The massive amphibolites and metagabbros further north (Wadi Haimur) represent the basal parts of the sole and show the lowest P,T conditions (450,620 °C and 4.7,7.8 kbar). The sole is the product of dynamothermal metamorphism associated with the tectonic displacement of ultramafic rocks. Heat was derived mainly from the hot overlying mantle peridotites, and an inverted P,T gradient was caused by dynamic shearing during ophiolite emplacement. Sm/Nd dating of whole-rock,metamorphic mineral pairs yields similar ages of c. 630 Ma for clinopyroxene and hornblende, which is interpreted as a lower age limit for ophiolite formation and an upper age limit for metamorphism. A younger Sm/Nd age for a garnet-bearing rock (c. 590 Ma) is interpreted as reflecting a meaningful cooling age close to the metamorphic peak. Hornblende K/Ar ages in the range 570,550 Ma may reflect thermal events during late orogenic granite magmatism. [source]


Degenerative and regenerative processes involved in midgut pseudotumor formation in the stick insect (Carausius morosus)

Abstract Spontaneous and experimentally induced pseudotumor formation in Carausius morosus impairs the midgut tissue homeostasis. Spontaneous pseudotumor formation begins by the break down of a single or a small group of columnar cells (CCs) and is followed by the degeneration of neighboring CCs. There are not only marked similarities but also decisive differences between normal dying CCs in healthy specimens and the degeneration of CCs leading to pseudotumors: in both cases, the apical cell parts with the nucleus are extruded into the midgut lumen, but only during of pseudotumor formation an "amorphous substance" originates from the basal parts of the CCs. Hemocytes are attracted to this substance and form a nodule-like aggregation, which is responsible for the phenotype of pseudotumors. Pseudotumor infestation has also an impact on the midgut nidi, which consist of an intestinal stem cell and several CC progenitor cells. In healthy specimens only one progenitor cell per nidus differentiates at a time, but, several to all progenitor cells differentiate simultaneously in pseudotumor-infested specimens. Extirpation of the ingluvial ganglion in healthy specimens results in an immediate onset of pseudotumor formation and a dramatic acceleration of pseudotumor growth. Importantly, the ultrastructural characteristics of spontaneous and experimentally induced pseudotumors are identical. Clonal integration supports the expansion from terrestrial to aquatic environments of the amphibious stoloniferous herb Alternanthera philoxeroides

Abstract Effects of clonal integration on land plants have been extensively studied, but little is known about the role in amphibious plants that expand from terrestrial to aquatic conditions. We simulated expansion from terrestrial to aquatic habitats in the amphibious stoloniferous alien invasive alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides) by growing basal ramets of clonal fragments in soils connected (allowing integration) or disconnected (preventing integration) to the apical ramets of the same fragments submerged in water to a depth of 0, 5, 10 or 15 cm. Clonal integration significantly increased growth and clonal reproduction of the apical ramets, but decreased both of these characteristics in basal ramets. Consequently, integration did not affect the performance of whole clonal fragments. We propose that alligator weed possesses a double-edged mechanism during population expansion: apical ramets in aquatic habitats can increase growth through connected basal parts in terrestrial habitats; however, once stolon connections with apical ramets are lost by external disturbance, the basal ramets in terrestrial habitats increase stolon and ramet production for rapid spreading. This may contribute greatly to the invasiveness of alligator weed and also make it very adaptable to habitats with heavy disturbance and/or highly heterogeneous resource supply. [source]


The Excurrent Ducts of the Testis of the Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) and Ostrich (Struthio camelus): Microstereology of the Epididymis and Immunohistochemistry of its Cytoskeletal Systems

Summary The volumetric proportion of the various ducts of the epididymis of the emu and ostrich and the immunohistochemistry of actin microfilaments, as well as cytokeratin, desmin and vimentin intermediate filaments, were studied in the various ducts of the epididymis of the emu and ostrich. The volumetric proportions of various ducts, which are remarkably different from those of members of the Galloanserae monophyly, are as follows: the rete testis, 5.2 ± 1.4% for the emu and 2.4 ± 1.8% for the ostrich; efferent ducts, 14.2 ± 2.3% (emu) and 11.8 ± 1.8% (ostrich); epididymal duct unit, 25.8 ± 5.8% (emu) and 26.1 ± 4.1% (ostrich) and connective tissue and its content, 54.7 ± 5.8% (emu) and 60.0 ± 4.9% (ostrich). Unlike in mammals and members of the Galloanserae monophyly, only vimentin was immunohistochemically demonstrated in the rete testis epithelium of the emu, and none of the cytoskeletal protein elements in the ostrich rete testis. The epithelium of the efferent ducts of the emu co-expressed actin, cytokeratin and desmin in the non-ciliated type I cells, and vimentin in the ciliated cell component. The ostrich demonstrated only cytokeratin in this epithelium. The ratite epididymal duct unit is different from that of mammals in lacking actin (only weaky expression in the ostrich), desmin and cytokeratin, and a moderate/strong immunoexpression of vimentin in the basal cells and basal parts of the NC type III cell in the epididymal duct unit. Immunoexpression of the microfilaments and intermediate filaments varied between the two ratite birds, as has been demonstrated previously in birds of the Galloanserae monophyly, and in mammals. Two Zosterophyll Plants from the Lower Devonian (Lochkovian) Xitun Formation of Northeastern Yunnan, China

Abstract: Two zosterophyll plants are described from the Lower Devonian (Lochkovian) Xitun Formation of Qujing, Yunnan, China. Xitunia spinitheca gen. et sp. nov. has stalked sporangia laterally attached on the axis in a helical arrangement. Sporangia are dorsoventrally flattened and composed of two unequal valves; the adaxial valve is round in face view, while the abaxial valve is larger than the former, triangular or wedge-shaped, and radially bears long spiny appendages along the distal margin. Xitunia shows new variation of sporangial morphology within the zosterophylls. Zosterophyllum minorstachyum sp. nov. has K-shaped branchings at the basal parts and small-sized terminal spikes, which consist of round to elliptical sporangia arranged helically. This paper provides new data on the diversity of plant types during Lochkovian when rare vascular plants were reported. As for various species of Zosterophyllum in South China, their apparent evolutionary trend of features from the Late Silurian to Early Devonian (Emsian) is discussed. [source]
