Selected AbstractsModeling expert problem solving in a game of chance: a Yahtzee© case studyEXPERT SYSTEMS, Issue 2 2001Ken Maynard Although developments on software agents have led to useful applications in automation of routine tasks such as electronic mail filtering, there is a scarcity of research that empirically evaluates the performance of a software agent versus that of a human reasoner, whose problem-solving capabilities the agent embodies. In the context of a game of a chance, namely Yahtzee©, we identified strategies deployed by expert human reasoners and developed a decision tree for agent development. This paper describes the computer implementation of the Yahtzee game as well as the software agent. It also presents a comparison of the performance of humans versus an automated agent. Results indicate that, in this context, the software agent embodies human expertise at a high level of fidelity. Saunders Abstract We describe the design and implementation of an autonomous adaptive software agent that addresses the practical problem of observing undersampled, periodic, time-varying phenomena using a network of HTN-compliant robotic telescopes. The algorithm governing the behaviour of the agent uses an optimal geometric sampling technique to cover the period range of interest, but additionally implements proactive behaviour that maximises the optimality of the dataset in the face of an uncertain and changing operating environment. KGaA, Weinheim) [source] Multi-Agent Distributed Coordination of Project Schedule ChangesCOMPUTER-AIDED CIVIL AND INFRASTRUCTURE ENGINEERING, Issue 6 2003Keesoo Kim This article presents the design and implementation of a multi-agent system called Distributed Subcontractor Agent System (DSAS), which consists of multiple subcontractor agents, multiple Graphic User Interfaces (GUIs), and an Agent Message Router. In the DSAS, subcontractors interact with their software agents to evaluate the impact of changes, simulate decisions, and get the negotiation results that they need to reschedule the project. This also presents the design and results of DSAS charrette tests, which demonstrated that DSAS produces the lower-cost results faster than manual centralized processes. DSAS can be useful for other domains, such as Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) coordination and workspace management, if the appropriate agents are designed.
