Seed characters and testa sculptures of some Iranian Allium L. species (Alliaceae)

Seeds taken from herbarium specimens of 20 Allium taxa were investigated. The seeds of all species were black ranging from 1.7 mm (A. lamondiae) to 4 mm (A. altissimum and A. stipitatum) in length and 1 mm (A. lamondiae) to 3 mm (A. altissimum) in width. So, A. lamondiae had the smallest and A. altissimum the largest seeds. In the mean, the members of subg. Melanocrommyum had somewhat larger and the species of sect. Avulsea somewhat smaller seeds than most species belonging to other groups. The shape was generally ovate or variants of it and showed only slight differences between members of different sections. The seed coat pattern was more variable. Most common were convex, granulate periclinal walls bearing several verrucae. Only A. borszczowii showed flat, densely granulate periclinal walls without verrucae, and A. bungei and A. joharchii had somewhat verruca-like aggregating grana. The majority of the species investigated showed S-like, rarely Omega-like, undulated anticlinal walls with variable wavelengths and amplitudes. The testa cells of A. joharchii showed transitions to straight anticlinal walls. More or less straight anticlinal walls in A. kopetdagense, A. paradoxum, A. barsczewskii, and A. scabriscapum were connected with the presence of a strip-like widened and transversally striated intercellular region covering these walls. The seed coat pattern of most species corresponded well to earlier reports of the same or closely related species, or was at least already reported for not related Allium species. CO2 and nitrogen, but not population density, alter the size and C/N ratio of Phytolacca americana seeds

Summary 1Plants can provision seeds by optimizing seed size, number and nutrient content to maximize parental fitness. According to the McGinley,Charnov hypothesis, seed size should be determined by the ratio of carbon to nitrogen (C/N) available to the plant, with larger seed size correlating with larger C/N ratios and smaller absolute N content. 2This hypothesis was tested by establishing monocultures of Phytolacca americana L. (Phytolaccaceae) at three population densities under ambient and elevated CO2 environments, with two availabilities of soil N. 3Elevated CO2 reduced both seed size and N concentration while increasing the C/N ratio; high soil N availability produced the opposite result for N concentration and C/N ratio. Higher planting densities reduced plant biomass, but did not alter seed size. 4In accordance with the McGinley,Charnov hypothesis, larger seeds had both larger C/N ratios and smaller N content. However, the increase in C/N ratio caused by elevated CO2 corresponded with smaller seeds overall: elevated CO2 reduced seed size, although the seed size,C/N relationship remained positive. 5These results suggest an alternative mechanism to explain variation in seed size, and suggest that future climate conditions may alter seed quality and plant reproductive behaviour. Effects of temporal and spatial variations in food supply on the space and habitat use of red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris L.)

Abstract In non-native conifer plantations characterized by strong spatial and temporal variations in the availability of tree seeds in Spadeadam Forest, northern England, the home range and habitat use of red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris was very flexible. Males tended to have much larger home ranges than females and core-areas of most breeding females seemed mutually exclusive. Adult female red squirrels were found to increase their home range and core-area size in forest patches where food was less abundant. Home-range size was significantly related to home-range quality and the extent of overlap by other females. In contrast with high-quality continuous conifer forests: (1) a considerable proportion of adult males and females at Spadeadam shifted home range, (2) both sexes had much larger home ranges than reported from other habitats in Britain or Belgium. Many ranges were multinuclear, particularly from January onwards, when supplies of seeds become depleted through consumption and seed shed. Squirrels tracked the availability of conifer seeds (lodgepole pine cones throughout the study, Norway spruce cones in spring 1992 and Sitka spruce cones in autumn 1993) and intensively used several non-adjacent activity centres in temporally food-rich patches. Consequently, habitat preference changed markedly with time. The squirrels seemed to maximize nitrogen intake and to avoid the smaller seeds when possible. This resulted in an overall preference for a mixed diet of lodgepole pine and spruce seeds and avoidance of Sitka spruce seeds when Norway spruce seeds were available. These results lend support to the hypothesis of Ostfeld (1985) that when food is sparse and patchily distributed, females should develop intrasexual territoriality, concentrating their activity in food-rich patches, while males should be non-territorial and adapt their space use to the distribution of females. Potential of endozoochorous seed dispersal by sheep in calcareous grasslands: correlations with seed traits

Abstract Questions: What is the potential of sheep to serve as seed dispersers via ingestion and defecation in calcareous grasslands? Is the presence of viable seeds from dung correlated with specific seed traits? Location: Calcareous grasslands, South Limburg, the Netherlands/Belgium. Methods: Dung samples (n=24) from sheep were collected between September 2006 and November 2007 from five sites with Mesobromion plant communities, and communities of Nardo-Galion saxatilis. Germinability and identity of seeds in the dung samples were ascertained from germination of seedlings under glasshouse conditions. Seed traits of species with viable seeds in dung were compared with those present in the local species pool. Results: Seventy-two plant species from 23 plant families had viable seeds in sheep dung. The plant families encountered most frequently were Gramineae and Compositae. The most abundant and frequently recorded plant species in dung samples was Urtica dioica, accounting for >80% of the total number of seeds. Mean seed density in sheep dung was 0.8 seeds g,1 dry matter. Seeds with low seed mass and a high seed longevity index were over-represented in dung. Viable seeds >2.5 mg were infrequent in the dung samples. Conclusions: We conclude that sheep are potentially important dispersers of plant species in Dutch calcareous grasslands. Although smaller seeds were relatively abundant in sheep dung, it cannot be excluded that this was mainly caused by differences in seed abundance. [source]
