Selected AbstractsA Simple Synthesis of Functionalized 3-Bromocoumarins by a One-Pot Three-Component ReactionEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 6 2010Davide Audisio Abstract Functionalized 3-bromocoumarins 2 have been prepared by a simple one-pot bromination/Wittig/cyclization tandem process from methyl (triphenylphosphoranylidene)acetate, N -bromosuccinimide and a series of 2-hydroxybenzaldehydes. Owing to the commercial availability of salicylaldehyde derivatives, this approach offers such a diverse range of compounds that it fulfills the recent demand for the generation of large combinatorial chemical libraries based on the coumarin scaffold. [source] N -Phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione (PTAD) as a Dienophilic Dinitrogen Equivalent: A Simple Synthesis of 3-Amino-1,2,4-benzotriazines from Arylcarbodiimides,EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 4 2010Mateo Alajarin Abstract N -Arylcarbodiimides react with PTAD to provide [1,2,4]triazolo[1,2- a][1,2,4]benzotriazines by a [4+2] cycloaddition reaction. When asymmetrically substituted diarylcarbodiimides are used, the cycloaddition proceeds with total chemoselectivity because only the more electron-rich aryl nucleus is involved. This observation has been rationalized by a computational study using DFT methods that shows that, in the reaction of HTAD with arylcarbodiimides, the magnitude of the energy barriers depend on the electronic features of the substituents at the aryl nucleus; the calculations also indicate that the reaction proceeds through asynchronous states with polar characteristics. The treatment of the final cycloadducts with potassium hydroxide affords 3-aryl(alkyl)amino-1,2,4-benzotriazines. A series of important biologically and pharmaceutically active compounds were obtained in excellent yields (up to 99,%) with high enantioselectivities (up to 89,%,ee) under mild conditions. Patra Abstract The threefold symmetric molecule, tris(4-cyanophenyl)amine (TCPA) is synthesized from 4-fluorocyanobenzene by treatment with potassium carbonate in dimethylsulfoxide; the occurrence of the reaction without any amine reagent suggests the involvement of a novel self-assembly process. A reprecipitation strategy provides stable colloids containing highly monodisperse nano/microcrystals with well-defined cubic morphology and sizes tunable from 250 to 500,nm. The solution, colloid, and solid states of TCPA exhibit strong blue fluorescence; the colloid shows dual emission with an unusually small Stokes shift. Computational investigations are carried out on the molecule and supramolecular assemblies derived from the crystal structure. Coupled with detailed spectroscopic studies, they show that the emission in the colloidal and solid states can be attributed to energy levels resulting from the intermolecular interactions within different aggregation motifs in the condensed phase and energy cascades between them. The computations also reveal the presence of cooperative interactions in the molecular crystal contributing to its high thermal stability. The strong light emission exhibited by TCPA, concurrently in the solution, nano/microcrystal, and solid states establishes it as a novel molecular material of potential practical utility; it has led to the exploration of the underlying mechanism that describes the phenomena observed in the different physical states. [source] Simple Synthesis of Submicrometer Lead Titanate Powder by Precipitation of TiO2 Precursor on PbO ParticulatesJOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CERAMIC SOCIETY, Issue 4 2000Kyoung R. Han A simple way to prepare phase-pure, submicrometer PbTiO3 powder was tried by precipitation. Precipitation was carried out in an aqueous PbO slurry using aqueous TiCl4 and dilute NH4OH at pH 9.5 ± 0.1. The TG/DSC curves of the PT precursor show weight loss of ,7% and two exotherms at 492° and 522°C. They are attributed to the crystallization of tetragonal PbTiO3. XRD shows that tetragonal PbTiO3 can be obtained by heat treatment around 500°C via a noncrystalline state. SEM shows that the PbTiO3 powder calcined at 600°C for 1 h is well crystallized and in the range of 100,300 nm.
