Simple Sol (simple + sol)
Selected AbstractsLarge-Scale Synthesis of Water Dispersible Ceria Nanocrystals by a Simple Sol,Gel Process and Their Use as a Chemical Mechanical Planarization SlurryEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 6 2008Taekyung Yu Abstract Ceria nanocrystals with a cube shape were synthesized from the hydrolytic sol,gel reaction of cerium salt in the presence of oleylamine. The overall synthetic process is very simple and readily applicable to the large-scale synthesis of tens of grams of product in a single reaction in air. These ceria nanocrystals are readily dispersible in aqueous media without the addition of any extra dispersing agent. The aqueous dispersion of the ceria nanocrystals was successfully used as a chemical mechanical polishing slurry, and it exhibited high removal selectivity between silicon oxide and silicon nitride at pH 7.(© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Nath Superconducting MgB2 nanowires have been synthesized in a very high yield by a simple soft-chemical approach combining sol-gel chemistry and pyrolysis techniques (see main image in the figure; scale bar: 10,,m). The long thin nanowires show a superconducting transition temperature, Tc, of ca.,39,K, as shown in the magnetization curve in the inset of the figure. The process of phosphor formation is characterized by thermogravimetric-differential thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction. Field-emission scanning electronic microscopy is used to characterize the size and the shape of the phosphor particles. Photo-luminescent property of the phosphor is also performed at the room temperature. The effects of firing temperature and Eu3+ activator concentration on the photoluminescence (PL) properties are elaborated in detail. PL characterization reveals that the sample with the firing temperature at 800°C and the concentration of Eu3+ at 0.7 shows the most intense emission, and its intensity is about three times stronger than that of phosphor prepared by solid-state method with the same composition and firing temperature. The new red-emitting phosphor shows an intense absorption at 396 nm, which matches well with commercial near-UV light-emitting diode (LED) chips, therefore, it is a good candidate of red phosphor used for near-UV white LEDs. X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy reveal that these thin films are composed of amorphous and crystalline SrTiO3 phases. Optical and electrical measurements indicate that La codoping can make the band gap of SrTiO3 narrow and cause the leakage current to increase. Ferromagnetic behavior can be observed in these Mn- and/or La-codoped SrTiO3 -based thin films at room temperature, which should be ascribed to the magnetic coupling between the induced free electrons and Mn 3d spins.
