The response of manured forage maize to starter phosphorus fertilizer on chalkland soils in southern England

The impact of various starter phosphorus (P) fertilizers on the growth, nutrient uptake and dry-matter (DM) yield of forage maize (Zea mais) continuously cropped on the same area and receiving annual, pre-sowing, broadcast dressings of liquid and semi-solid dairy manures was investigated in two replicated plot experiments and in whole-field comparisons in the UK. In Experiment 1 on a shallow calcareous soil (27 mg l,1 Olsen-extractable P) in 1996, placement of starter P fertilizer (17 or 32 kg ha,1) did not benefit crop growth or significantly (P > 0·05) increase DM yield at harvest. However, in Experiment 2 on a deeper non-calcareous soil (41 mg l,1 Olsen-extractable P) in 1997, placement of starter P fertilizer (19 or 41 kg P ha,1), either applied alone or in combination with starter N fertilizer (10 or 25 kg N ha,1), significantly increased early crop growth (P < 0·01) and DM yield at harvest by 1·3 t ha,1 (P < 0·05) compared with a control without starter N or P fertilizer. Placement of starter N fertilizer alone did not benefit early crop growth, but gave similar yields as P, or N and P, fertilizer treatments at harvest. Large treatment differences in N and P uptake by mid-August had disappeared by harvest. In field comparisons over the 4-year period 1994,97, the addition of starter P fertilizer increased field cumulative surplus P by over 70%, but without significantly (P > 0·05) increasing DM yield, or nutrient (N and P) uptake, compared with fields that did not receive starter P fertilizer. The results emphasized the extremely low efficiency with which starter P fertilizers are utilized by forage maize and the need to budget manure and fertilizer P inputs more precisely in order to avoid excessive soil P accumulation and the consequent increased risk of P transfer to water causing eutrophication. One-Pot Suzuki/Heck Sequence for the Synthesis of (E)-Stilbenes Featuring a Recyclable Silica-Supported Palladium Catalyst via a Multi-Component Reaction in 1,3-Propanediol

Abstract The synthesis of (E)-stilbenes was performed following a one-pot Suzuki/Heck sequence through the use of potassium vinyltrifluoroborate. The combination of heterogeneous palladium/silica (Pd/SiO2) catalyst with potassium phosphate monohydrate (K3PO4,H2O) as base resulted in useful to good isolated yields regardless of the ortho- , meta- or para- substitution of the aryl halides employed. In a sustainable approach, we found that bio-sourced 1,3-propanediol could advantageously replace N -methylpyrrolidone (NMP) as similar yields were obtained. Moreover, the reactivity gap between aryl iodides and bromides resulting from the use of 1,3-propanediol allowed an efficient multi-component approach toward the synthesis of (E)-stilbenes. Furthermore, this heterogeneous catalyst was found to be extremely robust despite the use of aerobic conditions and was successfully re-used over several cycles. [source]


Cultivation of flax in spoil-bank clay: Mycorrhizal inoculation vs. high organic amendments

Abstract A greenhouse experiment was focused on the application of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in effective crop production during reclamation of coal-mine spoil banks. The aim of the study was to find out whether mycorrhizal inoculation improves growth of flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) and whether it can compensate for high doses of expensive organic amendment. Flax was planted in original spoil-bank gray Miocene clay amended with organic matter used for spoil-bank reclamation (mixture of composted urban waste and lignocellulose papermill waste). This amendment was applied in four descending doses equivalent to the application of 500, 200, 100, and 0 t ha,1. The plants received either a mixed inoculum of three AMF species (Glomus mosseae, G. claroideum, and G. intraradices) or were left uninoculated. Growth of flax was significantly increased by mycorrhizal inoculation in pure clay (by 60%) as well as in clay with all amendment doses (by 119% on average). Also, the addition of organic matter increased plant growth but, interestingly, the biomass production was comparable regardless the dose of amendment. Our results suggest that similar yields are attainable with only one fifth of the usual fertilization dose, which can significantly decrease costs related to the reclamation of spoil banks. If mycorrhizal inoculation is applied together with the optimized fertilization, growth of flax planted in spoil-bank clay can be further improved. [source]


Prospective evaluation of cell kinetics, yields and donor experiences during a single large-volume apheresis versus two smaller volume consecutive day collections of allogeneic peripheral blood stem cells

Summary. We report cell kinetics, yields and donation experiences of 20 demographically matched allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) donors who were prospectively assigned to undergo either a single 25 l or two consecutive daily 15 l (15 l × 2) apheresis procedures. Procedures were performed using prophylactic intravenous calcium administration after standard granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (GCSF) mobilization (10 ,g/kg/d). Central line placements (two each), initial CD34 cell counts (0·077 vs 0·078 × 109/l) and yields (7·9 vs 8·1 × 108 CD34 cells) were similar in the two groups; however, 25 l donors spent significantly less time both in the clinic (7·5 vs 10·8 h) and with central venous catheters in place (8·5 vs 29·5 h) than 15 l × 2 donors. End-procedure platelet counts were below 100 × 109/l in one out of 10 25 l donors versus five out of 10 in 15 l × 2 donors (41%vs 53% mean decrease in platelet counts, P = 0·02). PBSC collection efficiency increased by 37% after 15 l of the 25-l volume had been processed, compared with no significant change during 15 l × 2 procedures. Results similar to these prospective findings were also observed in CD34 yields, symptoms and platelet counts in additional 25 l and 15 l procedures performed during the same period and evaluated retrospectively. This study indicates that a single 25-l apheresis procedure results in similar yields and symptoms, but less donor thrombocytopenia and inconvenience than two consecutive daily 15-l procedures.
