Soil detachment and transport on field- and laboratory-scale interrill areas: erosion processes and the size-selectivity of eroded sediment

Abstract Field- and laboratory-scale rainfall simulation experiments were carried out in an investigation of the temporal variability of erosion processes on interrill areas, and the effects of such variation upon sediment size characteristics. Poorly aggregated sandy soils from the semi-arid environment of Senegal, West Africa, were used on both a 40 m2 field plot and a 0·25 m2 laboratory plot; rainfall intensity for all experiments was 70 mm h,1 with a duration of 1 to 2 hours. Time-series measurements were made of the quantity and the size distribution of eroded material: these permitted an estimate of the changing temporal balance between the main erosion processes (splash and wash). Results from both spatial scales showed a similar temporal pattern of runoff generation and sediment concentration. For both spatial scales, the dominant erosional process was detachment by raindrops; this resulted in a dynamic evolution of the soil surface under raindrop impact, with the rapid formation of a sieving crust followed by an erosion crust. However, a clear difference was observed between the two scales regarding the size of particles detached by both splash and wash. While all measured values were lower than the mean weight diameter (MWD) value of the original soil (mean 0·32 mm), demonstrating the size-selective nature of wash and splash processes, the MWD values of washed and splashed particles at the field scale ranged from 0·08 to 0·16 mm and from 0·12 to 0·30 mm respectively, whereas the MWD values of washed and splashed particles at the laboratory scale ranged from 0·13 to 0·29 mm and from 0·21 to 0·32 mm respectively. Thus only at the field scale were the soil particles detached by splash notably coarser than those transported by wash. This suggests a transport-limited erosion process at the field scale. Differences were also observed between the dynamics of the soil loss by wash at the two scales, since results showed wider scatter in the field compared to the laboratory experiments. Expression of genes associated with allantois emergence in ovine and bovine conceptuses

Abstract In the development of ruminant embryos, the emergence and growth of the allantois is critical for the establishment of the chorioallantoic placenta. The allantoic membrane contributes to all the vasculature that perfuses the placental tissues and the fetal membranes. Using suppressive subtractive hybridization to compare mRNA from Day 13 ovine preimplantation conceptuses (prior to allantoic emergence) with Day 17 allantoic membrane, we identified nine genes whose expression was associated with the emergence of the allantoic sac. Collagen alpha 1 type XII, collagen alpha 2 type I, collagen alpha 2 type V, epsilon 4 beta-globin, osteonectin, and uroplakin were expressed at significantly greater levels in ovine Day 17 allantois compared to Day 13 conceptuses. These genes are associated with the extracellular matrix and most likely are involved in establishing and strengthening the structural integrity of the allantoic sac and in the development of the blood vessels. RalB expression increased with development although at significantly greater levels in the allantois only at Day 19. Hoxa-10 and RhoA showed no differential expression during this period. All these genes showed a similar temporal pattern of expression in bovine conceptuses at equivalent stages of development with significantly greater expression of all these genes, except for Hoxa-10, found in Day 24 allantois compared to Day 14 conceptuses. This suggests that the role they play in allantoic emergence, growth and function is conserved in both ruminant species and that their expression is regulated in a similar manner. HLA,B27 misfolding and the unfolded protein response augment interleukin-23 production and are associated with Th17 activation in transgenic rats

Objective To determine whether HLA,B27 misfolding and the unfolded protein response (UPR) result in cytokine dysregulation and whether this is associated with Th1 and/or Th17 activation in HLA,B27/human ,2 -microglobulin (Hu,2m),transgenic rats, an animal model of spondylarthritis. Methods Cytokine expression in lipopolysaccharide (LPS),stimulated macrophages was analyzed in the presence and absence of a UPR induced by chemical agents or by HLA,B27 up-regulation. Cytokine expression in colon tissue and in cells purified from the lamina propria was determined by real-time reverse transcription,polymerase chain reaction analysis, and differences in Th1 and Th17 CD4+ T cell populations were quantified after intracellular cytokine staining. Results Interleukin-23 (IL-23) was found to be synergistically up-regulated by LPS in macrophages undergoing a UPR induced by pharmacologic agents or by HLA,B27 misfolding. IL-23 was also increased in the colon tissue from B27/Hu,2m-transgenic rats concurrently with the development of intestinal inflammation, and IL-17, a downstream target of IL-23, exhibited robust up-regulation in a similar temporal pattern. IL-23 and IL-17 transcripts were localized to CD11+ antigen-presenting cells and CD4+ T cells, respectively, from the colonic lamina propria. Colitis was associated with a 6-fold expansion of CD4+ IL-17,expressing T cells. Conclusion The IL-23/IL-17 axis is strongly activated in the colon of B27/Hu,2m-transgenic rats with spondylarthritis-like disease. HLA,B27 misfolding and UPR activation in macrophages can result in enhanced induction of the pro-Th17 cytokine IL-23. These results suggest a possible link between HLA,B27 misfolding and immune dysregulation in this animal model, with implications for human disease. [source]


Winners and losers in human-made habitats: interspecific competition outcomes in two Neotropical vultures

Abstract Understanding the factors underlying species coexistence is a major focus in community ecology. When dealing with competition between native and exotic species, the competitive exclusion of the ,weaker' species can have consequences for biodiversity conservation. We examined interspecific interactions during foraging between black vultures Coragyps atratus and Andean condors Vultur gryphus in Southern Argentina. Previous studies suggest facilitatory interactions between them. However, in most parts of their distribution ranges, these species did not coexist until recently, when black vultures expanded their geographic range following human development. Thus, facilitatory processes or segregation patterns could not be fine-tuned enough to allow their coexistence. Our hypothesis is that black vultures and Andean condors compete for food resources, and that this competitive scenario can change depending on local species abundances and habitat humanization. We experimentally placed sheep carcasses in two habitats differing in degrees of humanization to study the foraging patterns in these species. Both species exploited carcasses with similar temporal patterns. However, the first to arrive and the dominant species were different in both habitats, according to their abundances. Although black vultures do not completely prevent the arrival of Andean condors to carcasses, they represent serious obstacles for feeding. Thus, while dominance hierarchy at carcasses could be related to body size, carcass consumption was determined by species abundance. Our results support the hypothesis that the expansion of a ,winning' species may trigger interspecific competition with other ,loser' species, with negative responses towards human activities when they became abundant. Although the results are not conclusive, invasion and extinction processes could be occurring and they can have serious consequences for the diversity (i.e. richness and evenness) of the New World scavenger guilds.
