Progression of Therapy Research and Clinical Application of Treatment Require Better Understanding of the Change Process

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY: SCIENCE AND PRACTICE, Issue 2 2001
Alan E. KazdinArticle first published online: 11 MAY 200
The stage model of therapy research focuses on the development of treatment from pilot work, through randomized controlled clinical trials, to tests in clinic settings. A goal of the model is to develop effective treatments that can be used clinically. The present comments begin with a similar goal but emphasize the importance of a broader agenda designed to understand therapy. A central thesis is that developing effective treatments depends heavily on investigations that address critical scientific questions; particularly, what are the mechanisms through which therapy operates and under what conditions is therapy likely to be effective and why? The comments argue for a portfolio of research that addresses a broader range of questions and encompasses more diverse methods of evaluating treatment. Breadth and diversity are not ends in themselves but will be essential to obtain the requisite knowledge to effect optimal changes in clinical applications of treatment. [source]

Porting and performance aspects from IPv4 to IPv6: The case of OpenH323

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, Issue 9 2005
Ch. Bouras
Abstract This paper is a summary of our experiences on a case study for porting applications to IPv6. We present the results of the effort to port OpenH323, an open-source H.323 platform to IPv6, which we believe can serve as guidelines for other projects with similar goals. We briefly present the structure of the OpenH323 platform. We also discuss a number of issues arising during the porting of a platform to IPv6, like which would be the easiest approach to the porting procedure, how compatibility with earlier, IPv4-only versions of the platform could be retained, if there are any useful tools for assisting this task, how and when one could be positive that the necessary modifications had been made, and which testing procedures should be followed. We then present a variety of experiments that we conducted in order to comparatively evaluate the IPv4 and IPv6 protocol stacks. We also present the results of some initial experiments comparing IPv4 and IPv6 performance under congested network links and the conclusions that they lead us to. Organizational Alternatives for Companies' Management of Occupational Risks: The Examples of Spain and Argentina

INTERNATIONAL SOCIAL SECURITY REVIEW, Issue 1 2001
Eugenia Suárez Serrano
This study discusses the various options available to companies for the management of occupational risks. In this context, occupational accident insurance schemes in Spain and Argentina are analysed, with reference to the theory of organizational economics. Spain has 75 years' experience of such schemes, while in Argentina they have only recently been introduced. Although the two models have similar goals, their differences, in terms of competition, regulation and ownership, lead to different incentives for those concerned: workers, companies, insurers and regulatory bodies. Content analysis of leadership in Asia-Pacific organizations

JOURNAL OF LEADERSHIP STUDIES, Issue 2 2008
Darson Chiu
Leadership and management are important factors that influence the ability of organizations to fulfill their goals. In this article, the role of two organizations was analyzed to determine which leadership styles are appropriate. The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) are two international organizations in the region of Asia-Pacific with similar goals but dissimilar organizational natures, properties, functions, and structures. Past studies researching APEC and PECC have mainly taken the perspective of macroeconomics or international relations. The intent when carrying out this study was to adopt a nontraditional approach to studying APEC and PECC by using a qualitative leadership and management methodology. By referring to identified leadership practices through content analysis and explored organizational paradigms through a narrative approach, this study recommends the application of suitable leadership and management practices to empower these two organizations and other similar organizations in the United States and other countries. Fast three-dimensional k -space trajectory design using missile guidance ideas

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IN MEDICINE, Issue 2 2004
Roberto Mir
Abstract Three-dimensional (3D) k -space trajectories are needed to acquire volumetric images in MRI. While scan time is determined by the trajectory efficiency, image quality and distortions depend on the shape of the trajectories. There are several 3D trajectory strategies for sampling the k -space using rectilinear or curve schemes. Since there is no evidence about their optimality in terms of image quality and acquisition time, a new design method based on missile guidance ideas is explored. Since air-to-air missile guidance shares similar goals and constraints with the problem of k -space trajectory design, a control approach for missiles is used to design a 3D trajectory. The k -space is divided into small cubes, and each one is treated as a target to be sampled. The main goal is to cover the entire space as quickly and efficiently as possible, with good performance under different conditions. This novel design method is compared to other trajectories using simulated and real data. As an example, a trajectory that requires 0.11 times the number of shots needed by the cylindrical 3DFT acquisition was designed. This trajectory requires more shots (1.66 times) than the stack of spirals, but behaves better under nonideal conditions, such as off-resonance and motion. Strategies and tactics in NGO,government relations

NONPROFIT MANAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP, Issue 1 2010
Insights from slum housing in Mumbai
Relationships between nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and government agencies have been variously described in the nonprofit literature as cooperative, complementary, adversarial, confrontational, or even co-optive. But how do NGO,government relationships emerge in practice, and is it possible for NGOs to manage multiple strategies of interaction at once? This article examines the experience of three leading NGOs in Mumbai, India, involved in slum and squatter housing. We investigate how they began relating with government agencies during their formative years and the factors that shaped their interactions. We find that NGOs with similar goals end up using very different strategies and tactics to advance their housing agendas. More significant, we observe that NGOs are likely to employ multiple strategies and tactics in their interactions with government. Finally, we find that an analysis of strategies and tactics can be a helpful vehicle for clarifying an organization's theory of change. [source]

Venus: Not evil, jus t a bit unfortunate

ASTRONOMY & GEOPHYSICS, Issue 1 2010
Prof. FW Taylor
The Venus Express mission, currently orbiting Earth's nearest planetary neighbour, has just had its mission extended until the end of 2012 by the European Space Agency (ESA). In December 2010 it will be joined by the Japanese Venus Climate Orbiter, which has similar goals of understanding the atmosphere and climate. In this article Fred Taylor looks at what has been learned so far and what remains mysterious about our nearby twin, with its torrid weather and its global warming issues. [source]
