Corporate restructurings: ripple effects on corporate philanthropy

Abstract Corporate restructurings, by their very nature, are inherently disrupting. With managerial discretion potentially curtailed, the ripple effects of restructurings are likely to be widespread and long-lasting. This paper examines one ripple effect of corporate restructurings: the effects of donations from corporate philanthropic foundations after acquisitions. By extending the business strategy merger and acquisition (M&A) literature to include philanthropic activities and applying the corporate citizenship literature to an M&A context, the author creates a model and tests hypotheses. Simultaneous examination of the impacts of corporate citizenship and business strategy is warranted in today's research on corporate restructurings, since larger acquisitions are occurring more frequently, and acquisitions have the potential to adversely affect large numbers of individuals. As ever-larger firms consolidate, with record-breaking merger announcements, the potential for increased scrutiny by the media, shareholders, anti-trust officials and salient stake-holders is heightened. These findings, contrary to predictions, suggest that corporate philanthropy increases during the first year after an acquisition within the same industry. Moreover, the increase is sustained. Philanthropic donations continue to increase three years after acquisitions within the same industry. Implications for public affairs executives is examined. Evaluation of aspiration cytology of the liver space occupying lesions by simultaneous examination of smears and cell blocks

Abstract This study was undertaken to compare the efficacy of cytologic smears and histological sections from cell blocks in diagnosis of space occupying lesions (SOLs) of the liver and to classify the lesions on the basis of combined cytohistologic diagnosis. The study was conducted on 50 patients who had radiologically detected SOL/SOLs in the liver and ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration of liver was done. In all the cases, both smears and cell blocks were made. Forty-seven cases were diagnosed as malignant and three as benign on both cytologic smears and cell blocks. Hepatocellular carcinoma was diagnosed in 8 (16%) cases and metastasis in 39 (78%) cases. The subtyping of malignancy could not be done on 11 (22%) cytologic smears and 8 (16%) cell block sections. However, on combined cytohistologic correlation, 17 (34%) out of these 19 (38%) cases could be subtyped. Sensitivity of cytologic smears and cell blocks in subtyping of malignancy was 72.3% and 82.9%, respectively. Combined cytohistologic diagnosis was found to be significantly better than isolated cytologic and cell block diagnosis (P , 0.05). To conclude, FNA of the SOLs of the liver is an effective procedure for diagnosing malignancy. However, cytological examination alone may fail to pinpoint the type of the tumor. Narrowing of the regions of allelic losses of chromosome 1p36 in meningioma tissues by an improved SSCP analysis

Abstract Mapping loss of heterozygosity (LOH) regions in the genomes of tumor tissues is a practical approach for identifying genes whose loss is related to tumorigenesis. Conventional LOH analyses using microsatellite or single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers require the simultaneous examination of tumor- and matched normal-DNA. Here, we improved the previously developed SNP-based LOH assay using single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis, so that LOH in tumor samples heavily contaminated with normal DNA can now be precisely estimated, even when matched normal DNA is not available. We demonstrate the reliability of the improved SSCP-based LOH detection method, called the LOH estimation by quantitative SSCP analysis using averaged control (LOQUS-AC), by comparing the results with those of the previous "LOH estimated by quantitative SSCP assay" (LOQUS) method. Using the LOQUS-AC assay, LOH was detected at a high consistency (98.1%) with the previous LOQUS method. We then applied this new method to characterize LOH profiles in 130 meningiomas, using 68 SNPs (i.e., a mean inter-SNP interval of 441 kbp) that are evenly distributed throughout chromosome 1p36. Benign, atypical and anaplastic meningiomas exhibited 1p36 LOH at frequencies of 48.39, 84.62 and 100.00%, respectively, using LOQUS-AC. Subsequently, we detected a candidate common LOH region on 1p36.11 that might harbor tumor suppressor genes related to malignant progression of meningioma. © 2007 Wiley-Liss, Inc. [source]


The relative importance of specific risk factors for insomnia in women treated for early-stage breast cancer

Abstract Background: Many individual risk factors for insomnia have been identified for women with a history of breast cancer. We assessed the relative importance of a wide range of risk factors for insomnia in this population. Methods: Two thousand six hundred and forty-five women ,4 years post-treatment for Stage I (,1 cm),IIIA breast cancer provided data on cancer-related variables, personal characteristics, health behaviors, physical health/symptoms, psychosocial variables, and the Women's Health Initiative-Insomnia Rating Scale (WHI-IRS; scores ,9 indicate clinically significant insomnia). Results: Thirty-nine per cent had elevated WHI-IRS scores. In binary logistic regression, the variance in high/low insomnia group status accounted for by each risk factor category was: cancer-specific variables, 0.4% (n.s.); personal characteristics, 0.9% (n.s.); health behaviors, 0.6% (n.s.); physical health/symptoms, 13.4% (p<0.001); and, psychosocial factors, 11.4% (p<0.001). Insomnia was associated with worse depressive (OR = 1.32) and vasomotor symptoms (particularly night sweats) (OR = 1.57). Conclusion: Various cancer-specific, demographic, health behavior, physical health, and psychosocial factors have been previously reported as risk factors for insomnia in breast cancer. In our study (which was powered for simultaneous examination of a variety of variables), cancer-specific, health behavior, and other patient variables were not significant risk factors when in the presence of physical health and psychosocial variables. Surgical closure of patent ductus arteriosus reduces the cerebral tissue oxygenation index in preterm infants: a near-infrared spectroscopy and Doppler study

Abstract Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) ligature on cerebral oxygen saturation, cerebral blood volume (CBV) and cerebral blood flow velocity by means of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and transcranial Doppler simultaneous examinations. Methods: This is an observational study considering 16 babies of gestational age 24,34 weeks diagnosed with PDA who underwent surgical ligation. The cerebral oxygen saturation, CBV and blood gases values were obtained 35 min before ligation, so also around the 14th and 27th min after the clip's insertion. Results: Cerebral oxygen saturation, measured as tissue oxygenation index (TOI), decreased significantly after PDA ligation from a basal value of 61.1 (3.8) before surgery to 56.6 (3.3) and 55.8 (2.6)%, for the 14th and 27th min, respectively (P < 0.04). CBV before and after clipping was unvaried. A negative correlation was found between ,pH and ,CBV after ligation (R = 0.52, P = 0.03), whilst a positive correlation was found between ,CBV and ,PaCO2 (R = 0.62, P = 0.009). pH increased at the 27th min post-ligation. Conclusions: NIRS is a tool for obtaining information on cerebral oxygen saturation and CBV changes during surgical PDA ligation at the bedside. A fall in TOI suggests an increased oxygen extraction during PDA surgery. The lack of increase in ,CBV or in diastolic flow velocity show that the PDA before the clipping did not limit cerebral blood flow, the drop in TOI suggests increased oxygen consumption over the clip and the need for accurate monitoring of oxygen utilization after the surgical treatment.
