Atypical apocrine proliferation involving anogenital mammary-like glands of the perianal region

Anogenital mammary-like glands (MLGs) are a normal constituent of the anogenital area showing similarities to breast glands. MLGs are recognized to be the possible origin for various neoplastic and reactive conditions that show homology to their mammary counterparts. We report the case of an 85-year-old woman presenting with 10 cm polypoid mass of the perianal region. Histopathological examination of the excised lesion showed atypical apocrine proliferation arising in a complex lesion with features of fibroadenoma, adenosis and hyperplastic and cystic change. Normal MLGs were observed at the tumor periphery. There was no recurrence after 3 years of follow up. This report represents an illustration of the complexity of lesions developed from MLG. An inquiry into eastern leadership orientation of working adults in Afghanistan

This study analyzes the leadership tendencies of respondents from Afghanistan and compares them with their American counterparts. The responses of 219 Afghans are compared with 87 respondents from the United States, showing similarities of leadership orientation between the two cultures. Afghans have higher scores on the relationship orientation, and age seems to be a factor as well. Suggestions and implications are explored for local managers working with foreigners, multinational managers, political leaders, and United Nations officials working in Afghanistan toward reconstruction and peaceful development of the country. Narcoleptic canines display periodic leg movements during sleep

Abstract Periodic leg movements during sleep (PLMS) is a high prevalent sleep disorder of unknown etiology. The disease is pharmacologically treated with dopaminergic agonists (i.e. D2/D3 agonists) and opiates. Periodic leg movements during sleep often occur in narcoleptic patients. We observed that narcoleptic canines, like narcoleptic humans, also exhibit jerky, unilateral or bilateral slow leg movements during sleep. The movements in dogs are characterized by repetitive dorsiflexions of the ankle, lasting 0.5,1.5 s, and occur at regular intervals of 3,20 s, thus showing similarities to PLMS in humans. The observation that D2/D3 agonists aggravate cataplexy in narcoleptic dogs suggests that altered dopaminergic regulation in canine narcolepsy may play a critical role in both cataplexy and PLMS. Our canines may therefore be an invaluable resource in PLMS research. [source]


Distal intestinal gene expression in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) fed genetically modified maize

Abstract In the current experiment, RNA was isolated from the distal intestine (DI) of Atlantic salmon-fed fishmeal-based diets containing either genetically modified (GM) maize (Bt maize, Mon810®, Monsanto Company, St. Louis, Missouri, USA) or its conventional near-isogenic parental line (non-GM) for 82 days, both at 300 g kg,1 inclusion. From a suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) cDNA library, 192 clones with similarity to both known and novel Atlantic salmon sequences were identified. Real-time PCR was used to study the differential expression of 10 clones between the dietary groups. Expression of a clone showing high protein similarity to proton-dependent high-affinity oligopeptide transporter was significantly upregulated in fish-fed GM maize compared with fish-fed non-GM maize. No significant differences in expression were observed for the nine other clones showing similarity to the following proteins: heat shock protein 90B, procathepsin B, interferon gamma-inducible protein 30, ferritin heavy subunit, serum lectin isoform/C-type mannose-binding lectin, fatty acid-binding protein/gastrotropin, ATP synthase [H+ transporting, mitochondrial F0 complex, subunit c (ATPSYNT)], sonic hedgehog and translationally controlled tumour protein. In conclusion, only minor differences in DI transcriptional gene expression was observed between fish fed the GM and non-GM maize diets. [source]


Influence of postharvest water stress on lipoxygenase and alcohol dehydrogenase activities, and on the composition of some volatile compounds of Gewürztraminer grapes dehydrated under controlled and uncontrolled thermohygrometric conditions

ABSTRACT Gewürztraminer grapes with a sugar content of around 212 g/L (21.7oBrix) were dried at 17oC, 40% relative humidity and 1.5 m/sec air flow in a 300 L thermo-conditioned tunnel. Control grapes were dried traditionally in a window ventilated room, under uncontrolled environmental conditions varying with outside climate. Tunnel-dried grapes reached the desired sugar concentration (305 g/L, 29.5oBrix) in 17 days, loosing 36% of their weight. Control grapes lost only 22% of their weight and grey mould developed in several bunches at the last sampling. Titratable acidity decreased for tunnel-dried and control grapes from 6.5 g/L to 4 g/L and 5 g/L, respectively. Lipoxygenase (LOX) activity declined in both samples from 120 to 90 U/mg protein dw, with a subsequent significant increase after 20% weight loss in tunnel-treated grapes while the control grapes showed a small peak (150 U/mg protein dw) at 13% weight loss. Six carbon compound evolution showed a loose correlation with LOX activity. Alcohol dehydrogenase specific activity and the concentrations of ethanol and of acetaldehyde plus ethyl acetate showed fluctuating patterns of change, with the evolution of these three variables showing similarity, particularly evident in the tunnel-dried grapes. Carotenoids declined significantly, to increase slightly at the end of the experiment in both samples, with the decline more rapid in the control grapes. Traditional, uncontrolled conditions, did not permit constant dehydration, and provoked a rapid stress to the berries (10% of weight loss). Controlled conditions permitted uniform dehydration, postponed water stress, giving a higher quality product without loss of berries. [source]
